PAVILION OPENINGPAVILION OPENINGPAVILION OPENINGPAVILION OPENING

The Parish Council would like to invite you to the official opening of

the Pavilion on Monday 7th May 2012. It has taken a number of years from concept to the beautiful building we have today and our thanks are extended to all who have made this happen. The day will kick off with numerous children's matches organised by the Football Club from 10am to 12.30pm At 12.30 medals will be handed out by a celebrity (at present a closely guarded secret) Ribbon cutting on the pavilion veranda at 1pm. At 2pm the Cricket Club will start their children matches until 6pm. They would like to invite any child who is not in a team to come along and try their hand at a game. No experience necessary! Throughout the day there will be hot food, ice creams and refreshments. Come along, bring a chair, buy a programme and watch a few matches or spend the whole day. Explore the pavilion and meet up with friends. Could we ask that you walk to the pavilion as we anticipate a large number of cars will be here on the day. If you could spare an hour or two on the day we are looking for volunteers to help with selling programmes, parking, litter collection and general help. Please contact the Parish Clerk at [email protected].

A Thank You from MAGPAS Thank you very much for bringing into our office such a generous donation with regard to your Burns Night celebrations. Thanks to you, Magpas can carry on providing the whole of the Eastern Region with the best critical care in the UK, day and night. Dr Robert Major, consultant in emergency medicine and Magpas Helimedix volunteer said “Every single penny you donate goes towards helping save lives. On behalf of all of our patients and from all of us – Thank You”. Our volunteer Doctors and Paramedics who work with us are busier than ever . If you could

continue to spread the word about Magpas, we would be extremely grateful. Once again, THANK YOU from all of us at Magpas, we really do appreciate your support. Debbie Florence Fundraising Manager ______________________________________

Burns Night Celebration 2012 What a night! First we had no lights, then no heating and no hot water, what a start to a celebration but we got through it with flying colours, or so we were told. The night started off with the Piper greeting everybody in and then the toast to the Haggis and numerous other Scottish Burns night traditions, which we would like to thank everybody for their renditions. We would again like to thank all the people who at the last minute brought all the food in hot after late phone calls, owing to the effect that we had no heating or light, also for their continued generosity in supplying the food and other items to make the night a very pleasant and successful event. The money that you all generously raised to go to our Church and Magpas was over £1350 which has been accepted from both parties with much appreciation. Many thanks again to everybody who helped in a difficult situation, we hope to see you all again next year. Tom & Ruth Footman Brian & Jill Drayton Frank & Janet Wolton

The Olympics 2012 – a great opportunity to celebrate and get involved in Cambridgeshire For the Sporting…. As Olympic fever spreads across the country, many of us might feel inclined to get involved in some new sporting activities, whether in a competitive manner or just for a bit of fun. Numerous events are going on nationally – the Big Dance Week in July, the ‘Gold Challenge’ where you can raise money for charity by trying 5, 10, 20 or 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports, ‘Hopscotch to Victory’ which is a world record attempt taking place in June, and for those who fancy something a little less strenuous, there is ‘All the Bells’ which calls on residents to ring any kind of bell they can between 8am and 8.03am on 27th July. More information about these activities and many more can be found on the main Olympic and Paralympic website www.london2012.com. If you do not have access to the internet and would like to find out more about the national activities, telephone 0845 2672012. There will also be many sporting events and activities taking place locally. These will be listed on

Pot Holes and Repairs I am experiencing difficulty getting Highways to fix the problems I am reporting. I have just flagged up some areas in the village and Green End (particularly by the Doctors’ surgery) in Comberton for the umpteenth time – an area that really needs urgent work. Please let me know if there are any areas causing problems. Highways are slow to respond at the moment. Comberton Library We had an excellent meeting recently with FOCAL (Friends of Comberton Area Library), Officers from County and the Portfolio Holder David Harty confirming that the Comberton Library is safe and looking at the future for the service. Fantastic news and well done to everyone who worked so hard to keep it open. FOCAL are still looking for volunteers to work in the Library, so if you have a few hours and would like to help please email: [email protected] If you have any issues that I can help with please don’t hesitate to contact me: By phone: 01954 212725 (h) and 07947 865490 (m) or by email [email protected] Fiona Whelan Hardwick Division County Councillor

Cambridgeshire Riverwalk – Sunday 6 May 2012 Join us on Sunday 6th May for a great day out along the banks of the River Cam for a 7, 12 or 19 mile linear walk. Our walk snakes along the Fen Rivers Way following the Rivers Cam and Ouse into the heart of the Fens. You’ll enjoy fantastic views along the way and have a chance to explore the wildlife of the Riverside. Our 7 and 19 mile routes start at Jesus Green, Cambridge whilst the 12 mile walkers begin at The Motorboat Club, Waterbeach. We’ll be welcoming back walkers with refreshments at the end of their walk. Riverwalk is a fantastic event to be part of; whether you walk alone, with your dog, with friends, with family or with colleagues you know that every step you take is helping to raise vital funds for those affected by cancer. This year we are also delighted to announce the brand new Corporate Challenge courtesy of Cambridge Trophy and Engraving Centre. The highest corporate fundraising team that pay in their sponsorship money before 31st July 2012 will have their company name engraved on our charity shield which the company will then own for the year – and of course benefit from the press coverage of being our top corporate fundraising team! If you are looking to engage your employees with a team building

activity, have a competitive workforce or would simply like a scenic social walk with colleagues whilst raising vital funds for those affected by cancer, register your team today. Our top individual fundraiser that pays in their sponsorship money before 31st July 2012 will also receive a £25 John Lewis voucher, courtesy of John Lewis, St.Andrews Street, Cambridge. For more information and to register, please visit www.macmillan.org.uk/walking. If you have any questions, please call the team on 0300 1000 200 or email [email protected]. If you can’t take part but you’d still like to get involved, we have lots of volunteer opportunities so please contact us on the details above.

Caldecote Dry Drayton and Hardwick Community Car Scheme At the moment Hazel, one of our busiest drivers and co-ordinators, is recovering from a knee operation and thus out of action for the time being. I know all our drivers, and passengers especially, will join us in wishing her a very speedy recovery - and we know she is very sorely missed by a lot of people! For the time being Glenda and I are working very hard to fill her gap and

Page 12: 2012 April-May Journal

so far have still managed to meet all our requests. One piece of very good news - a delightful lady from Hardwick has offered her services - and as soon as we get her CRB check completed she will be able to join our band of drivers. We really will be more than grateful. We regularly get a lot of requests from Hardwick and have been asking for ages for more drivers to come forward from that area particuarly. Our latest volunteer is keen on being given postcodes for her sat-nav - so when we get requests we must try and check we take postcodes! We still do need more drivers from all areas as it shares the load - so please do come forward and offer your services if you can. Mileage costs are reimbursed by the passenger plus Cambridgeshire County Council at 45p per mile. When we do hit a really busy period, for example, when on top of other calls we are trying to organise daily runs to Addenbrooke's, we really do need extra help. Currently we owe a specially big thank you to all our drivers who are working extra hard while Hazel is missing. Again just a quick reminder that it is helpful to have as much notice as possible for runs needed - particularly for Addenbrooke's. Lastly a note that in July we will be looking forward to having our annual coffee morning for all our passengers! This will be fully advertised nearer the time - and hopefully everyone we know of will get an invitation! Meantime do save anything that would make a good raffle prize and in the next magazine we will let you know who to hand it to! Of course

anyone who reads this is welcome to come - especially anyone interested in driving. There will be plenty of information on that morning! Sheila Stephenson

We didn’t report in the last Journal, but our ‘gift tombola’ at the Christmas Fayre was an outstanding success with the children. The stall was cleaned out in little over an hour, and we raised £85. Many thanks to everyone involved in wrapping such enticing packages, and then for supporting us at the Fayre.

Thank you for the Jam Jars

I am sure everyone will be very glad to hear that at our last official count (at the Pancakes Pennies and Praise service) the grand total reached £1,391, which is amazing! Thank you so much to everyone who has helped, contributed, and / or is still collecting! Please do keep on collecting if you can! Any jar will do - or Sheila has spare labelled tubs. If and when you have full jars, or perhaps yours has missed the collections, please ring Sheila (see below) and she will come and collect them. Alternatively, please drop them off at the shop. Three more jars have just come in and await counting. It would be great to make the £1,400 mark – and more if we can!

Friends of Caldecote Church … reviving our heritage

Praise & Pancakes:

On Sunday 12th February we found a really good way of celebrating everyone’s generosity in supporting church improvements through last year! As well as reflecting on the deeper symbolism of pancakes, lots of us gathered to try all sorts of sticky ways of making them tasty! And whilst waiting for the adults to perfect their pancake cooking and tossing skills, the children performed the latest Jam Jar, penny-count.

Table-top sale

A chance to sell any unwanted items – and a chance to pick up a bargain! We will be holding a sale at the Village Hall on Saturday 26th May; doors open at 2pm. Tables will be just £5 each; if you would like to participate, please contact Helen Kamper (01223 264231) or Sheila to reserve your space.

Prizes & Plants wanted!

Do you have any unwanted Christmas presents that would be good prizes for a raffle? We will be holding stalls & raffles at various events through the year. If you can offer a bottle, book, a plant or any other acceptable prize, please drop them off with Sheila at 1 Porthmore Close. Perhaps you are growing seedlings for planting out in the garden? If so, please can you sow a few extra for our stalls? Or, we can put other spare plants to good use, if you have some. If you have any

offers, please contact Roger (see below) or Sheila (210638).

Our Civilised Summer !

In between celebrating the diamond Jubilee in June, and the Olympics from late July we are planning our own summer fun:

The Barker family will be hosting a flower arranging event accompanied by music and afternoon tea in their beautiful garden (with marquee, in case) at the Old Rectory (next to the church) on Saturday 16th June. Contact John & Catherine on Tel: 01 223 264138 to book your place (£10 per ticket).

We will hold our annual Open Gardens weekend on 23rd & 24th June this year. This is a chance for all Caldecote’s green fingered and arm-chair gardeners to share their love of plants, gardens … and tea & cakes! We are always on the lookout for new gardens to include. If yours would be of interest, please consider this, and then contact Roger (details below).

We are still hatching plans for a stall at the Village Feast on Saturday 7th July.

Details of all these events will be posted in the next Journal issue and on the Friends’ website when available. www.caldecotefriends.org.uk

Remember, our website always provides other ways you can help:

o Ask Amazon to donate – they’ll give a percentage of your purchase to the Friends whenever you buy through our website Amazon link, so it’s a way of fund-raising that is totally painless!

Page 14: 2012 April-May Journal

o Sponsorship made easy: our website is there to help, and it adds gift-aid.

o Caldecote Photo Cards, or give one of our Cookbooks: We have lovely Greetings Cards for sale in aid of Friends’ funds. Or you could give a special Caldecote Cookbook. Contact Roger (see below).

Thank you to everyone for so much support. For any more ideas or offers of help:

Churchwardens’ Corner By the time you all read this, one major and historic event should have happened. The water should have been brought across the road by Cambridge Water which is the first stage of getting the water into the Church! All the paperwork for that stage is done and it is now up to the water company to find a day and do the job! The other thing that should have been achieved is the acquisition of the faculty from the Registry in London, which, just like planning permission, allows us legally to dig a trench across the Churchyard and under the

Church tower wall to take the water actually into the Church building. At the time of writing all our paperwork for this has indeed gone in and we are just waiting for the faculty to be issued! The whole process is being carried out under the legal eye of the County archaeologist. Should we find human bones from previous burials in the path of the trench, we will need to report them to the Ely Diocesan Chancellor in London. This could cause significant delays but we will get there in the end! It really will be a moment in history when we can turn the tap on in Church and actually get real water! A huge thank you to our generous benefactor who is financially making this possible. Parallel with things happening at the Church, by the time you read this we will also have held our coffee morning and coffee evening to try and find out what parents would most like the Church to provide for the children. At the time of writing we have no idea what anyone will come up with – but if you still have any yet unvoiced ideas do please email them to Sheila (see below for address). Also we have held a very successful Pancakes & Praise service at our regular second Sunday of the month Service in the Village Hall! Our jam jar count there brought our total to £1391 which is fantastic – and a few jars are still to come in. We had four pancake stations going and a wide variety of toppings! Dona got a wonderful photo of Rosanna and Roger both unbelievably simultaneously tossing pancakes mid-air – and they were both successfully caught and handed out!!!

Page 15: 2012 April-May Journal

Thank you so much to everyone who helped on that occasion and made it such a thoroughly enjoyable event. (Photos are now on the stands in Church and on the Church website at www.caldecotechurch.org.uk) Also by the time you read this the March second Sunday Service will have taken place with the theme ‘Celebrating new life’ and with the children (and adults who wish!) – planting seeds and making a big nest to collect up Easter eggs in on Easter Sunday! And of course Mothering Sunday will have taken place too with flowers being given to all the ladies in Church! Almost as soon as you receive this, Easter will be upon us! There is a warm welcome to everyone for all/any of our services. The Easter service will be followed this year by an Easter Egg hunt in the Church and Churchyard. The eggs will be collected into the nest we made in March and shared by all the children! Do come and bring your family and share in the hunt! After Easter there will be a few changes. From May onwards we will be holding a service every Sunday in Church – except for the second Sunday of the month when the service will be in the Village Hall as usual. To keep service times more memorable all services will be at 11.00am. Everyone is welcome at all/any of them.

On the 5th Sundays of the month (starting with April 29th), following

requests, we will be holding a traditional Mattins/Morning Prayer service. For those of us who aren’t familiar with this service, it will be a chance to get to know some of the riches of the older Book of Common Prayer language – for others, we hope this will be a welcome opportunity to explore once again the timeless truth about God and ourselves in what is widely considered to be amongst the best ever penned English.

And lastly – we still need more help to cover all the Church activities and aspects! We need more organists to play our beautiful Chamber organ and are trying hard to improve our music. There are no pedals – so only piano skills are needed! Please contact Sheila if you can help.

Extra help in setting up the Church each Sunday, handing out hymn books and giving a warm welcome would also be a great help. Please contact either Dona or Sheila for this. Please do visit St Michael’s website for up-to-date information. You will find it at: www.caldecotechurch.org.uk Our very best wishes for a happy Easter, Dona McCullagh Sheila Stephenson 1 Porthmore Close Highfields Caldecote Tel. 01954 210638 email: [email protected]

Superfast Broadband Rollout Update I am pleased to report that there is very good progress being made in upgrading Madingley exchange for superfast broadband. There are three forms of fibre technology being rolled out, Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC), Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), and Exchange Only (EO). There will be two cabinets, one in Hardwick and one in Coton. The other villages will be served by FTTP, with a small smattering of Exchange only lines. The Race to Infinity winning areas are among the first areas in the country to get deployment that includes all three. It means we will potentially have the highest percentage coverage in an exchange area anywhere in the UK. BT expect that 100% of premises will see an increase in speed, with 99.9% getting speeds of over 15 Mb/s and 0.1% of premises receiving between 2Mb/s and 15Mb/s.

Because the deployment involves more FTTP than envisaged, BT expect to use 106 kms or 99 miles of fibre cable! This, coupled with the difficulties that have been encountered with cable ducts means that the rollout has taken longer than was initially anticipated, and that the

rollout will be staggered from April 2012 onwards, possibly through to July 2012. The cabinet in Hardwick has been installed at the junction of Cambridge Road and Limes Road and is awaiting commissioning, so it can be brought into service. The good news is that BT is confident that those within 2km range of the cabinet will be able to start ordering the service as from April 2012. The cable installations in Caldecote have been taking place for a number of weeks now, as captured in this picture. The service is not going to be automatically adopted. Anyone who wants superfast broadband service will have to order it either from their current telephone provider or from BT. The system is being built out for open access, so that other telephone suppliers can buy wholesale from BT and supply their own customer base. Check with your supplier to see if they have signed up with BT to get on the superfast broadband network. Nag them if they haven’t. BT has offered to help us celebrate the first orders, and have asked for suggestions. This may include sponsoring a local event or award, donating two free Infinity lines to deserving causes, and there is the opportunity for the BT Infinity bus to visit the area over the summer! So, please write in to me with suggestions – [email protected] or go the Madingley Exchange race blog at www.RaceToInfinity.org.uk where you can submit your ideas, and also get more detailed information on the rollout as it happens. From the Rector... April begins with Christians celebrating the greatest week of the year. We remember together the arrest, trial, and suffering of Jesus, and his death upon the cross. Then, on Easter Sunday, we join together in celebration, remembering that death could not hold him. Jesus returned to his friends, alive! Death is one of the last unmentionable topics. Maybe we can feel that even mentioning death is to bring it closer to us. Each year, Easter is a reminder for us that God’s love is stronger than even death itself. Whatever our fears and anxieties, the Easter story gives the proof that there is a God who is greater than whatever we fear. If the biggest enemy of all is defeated, then nothing else we face, however frightening, need dominate our lives. God is still God, and does not change, and God is always there for anyone who turns to Him. Mike Booker ______________________________

Community First Responders! HELP us save lives! Do you have a current driving licence and access to a car? Are you physically fit? Over 18 and under 70? Are you caring and tolerant? Come and join the team We are looking for caring energetic people to join our Caldecote, Toft, Kingston, First Responder Scheme.

We need First Responders to volunteer a few hours a week to attend local emergencies. No previous medical background is needed as full training will be given by East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust. We also need fund raisers and event organisers to help raise awareness and Funds to keep these schemes alive. Why we need your help? The answer is that it has been recognised that sudden cardiac arrest claims around 150,000 lives each year in the United Kingdom, with survival rates being around 5% outside of a hospital setting. If a person’s heart has stopped due to an accident or heart attack and is in a rhythm called ventricular fibrillation, the only way to get the heart into a more regular sustaining beat is to pass an electrical charge through the heart muscle. The first eight minutes are the most vital for the collapsed person and, if FIRST AID and a DEFIBRILLATOR are on hand, then the chance of survival will increase considerably. The types of calls you will be asked to attend are life threatening emergencies such as heart attacks, chest pain, cardiac arrests, fits and breathing problems. You will not be asked to attend dangerous incidents such as road traffic accidents, fights or childbirth. An Ambulance or Paramedic will always be dispatched to the incident and will take control as soon as they arrive. In the meantime by your actions you may have saved a life!

Caldecote Playgroup Spring Term We had a visit from Shepreth Wildlife Park and they brought in some unusual animals to show the children. We looked at a Barn owl, an enormous bird-catching spider (tarantula), African snails, millipedes, Argentine tegu lizard and a couple of rats. The children enjoyed asking questions about the animals and also had the opportunity to stroke the rats and tegu. Some children were brave enough to hold the African Snails and they were big. We made a video of the visit and the children are still re-visiting the experience using the media player on the playgroup computers.

Playgroup organised a family trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum for the school-riser group. Our trip started by travelling to the Trumpington park-and-ride in cars and then we had an exciting bus ride to the museum. We met Nichola at the entrance and she took us on an adventure through the museum. She showed us some very old paintings and told us her special story about the paintings – “A princess who lost her pearls”. We also saw knights wearing armour and some of the weapons they used. We were invited to the studio where we made our very own treasure boxes using a range of materials. Thank you Nicola, we really enjoyed our visit to the museum. Admissions We have a waiting list and would recommend that you place your child on the list from when they are 12 months old. Caldecote Village Feast Back by Popular Demand

Last year's event was seen as a great opportunity to bring the village together and was very successful, despite the weather !! This year’s event is on Saturday 7th July, this has changed from 14th July to avoid clashing with Cambourne Youth Festival. This open meeting is the perfect opportunity for you to come along and offer your help on Feast Day, run a stall of your choice or simply come up with ideas.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, why not simply drop an email to [email protected] to register your willingness to help. We are looking for enough individual volunteers so that your help on the day will be restricted to one hour! We have 25 stalls to fill with fun activities and items for sale as well as food / drink stalls. If you wish to run your own stall or food/drink stall, then don’t delay, get it booked now. This can be done either at the meeting or again, emailing [email protected]

Page 21: 2012 April-May Journal

The Village Feast will only be a successful and fun day if the Caldecote community comes forward to help make it a success. Come along to the meeting and get involved. If you can’t come to the meeting, drop us an email with your offer of help / idea etc. Please pass this information to anyone else you think may be interested. Village Power, together we can achieve anything!!

After the success of the last two years, the feast will be taking place again on the 7th of July this year. We already have a number of requests for stalls, which this year will be laid out on the recreation ground, while the facilities of the new pavilion will be available for several stalls serving food and drinks. Also on the recreation ground we will have a number of attractions, including Zorbs (aka Hamster Balls) and Archery among others. Of course we plan to have our traditional attractions such as welly throwing and the dog competition as well as various displays including drum majorettes, cheerleaders and the ever popular children/adult races. Events will kick off in the morning with a parade around the village and the day will be hosted by Star FM presenter Ryan Taylor. Finally the after-feast party will be held in the evening at the Social Club with entertainment laid on. Raffle tickets will go on sale in May and a collection of prizes is already building up. If you have any prizes to

donate or would like details on how to sponsor an event please get in touch with John Miller ([email protected]). We are still looking for volunteers to help with the organisation between now and the big day, as well as an army of willing helpers to make the big day run smoothly. If you feel you can contribute, then please contact John or post on the facebook page at: www.facebook.com/caldecotefeast

Tough and Technicolour species Tulips Tulips are perhaps one of the most recognisable garden plants, and have been cultivated since the 13th century for their showy flowers. The National Collection of Tulipa (species only) at the Botanic Garden is believed to be the only survivor from the Ministry of Agriculture’s special collection scheme that was introduced after the Second World War. The origins of the collection, however, go much further back and lie in a tragedy. William Dykes, master of Charterhouse School, keen amateur gardener, botanist and Secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), was a passionate collector of both tulips and iris. But sadly, in November 1925, only a week after receiving the Victoria Medal of Honour from the RHS, Dykes was

killed in a motoring accident. The Botanic Garden’s archive contains a letter inviting the then Director,

Humphrey Gilbert-Carter, to purchase 1/12 syndicate share in the late Mr Dyke’s tulip collection, urging that ‘It seems to me a pity that these rare and uncommon bulbs should be sold outside this country’. Duly secured, Gilbert-Carter writes in 1927, ‘Dyke’s

Tulips make the finest show I have seen in the Garden. I put a short notice in the ‘Review’ about them, and great numbers of people come to admire them’. The collection is grown in terracotta pots housed in the behind-the-scenes Alpine Yard, but as they come into flower, they are plunged into the Mountains display of the Glasshouse Range, where they make a wonderful display from February through to late May. Many also grow well on the Limestone Rock Garden, including the lady tulip, Tulipa clusiana and Tulipa orphanidea, and we have recently established a patch of bright yellow Tulipa sylvestris in the long grass under the Magnolias as part of the spring bulb belt. Photo: Tulipa orphanidea by Howard Rice The Botanic Garden is open 10am – 6pm from April - September. Admission is £4.50 (Giftaid admission £4.95) or join the Friends, get free admission & help the Garden grow !
