BOARD OF DIRECTORS

dear member,

With 2012 now here, I trust that all members had a most joyous and merry Christmas and a happy start to the new year with their respective families, and that 2012 brings all that you may wish for.

On the Club scene, the refurbishment of the Fitness Edge Centre is well underway with Stage 1 due for completion in early February. The refurbishment should ensure that our Club will be up there with the leaders in the fitness field with regard to the latest technology and equipment facilities. I should also point out that fees at the Fitness Edge are more than competitive with other venues, and with our highly qualified staff to cater to your every need it will be the destination venue for all those who seek better health and wellbeing.

With the closure of our “Hawks on Second Avenue” venue and the rezoning of the site now determined your Board and Management are in the process of exploring what will be the best option for this site in the future, and talks are underway with various consultants to determine the best course of action.

The Federal Government Legislation on Mandatory Pre-Commitment for poker machines should come to a head during this year, and all in the Industry are hoping that common sense, in some form, will prevail. Also of note is that proponents of this Legislation are at last realising the effect that online gaming will have on the problem gambler should this legislation be passed. We hope that steps can be taken to control this form of gambling, which is a bigger threat to families through uncontrolled addiction than any licensed venue.

Our marketing team has revamped some of our promotions for this year, and we trust that patrons will both enjoy and benefit from the changes made.

All in all, 2012 should again be a challenging year with some complex issues still to be resolved, but I feel confident that, with the continued support of members, your Board and Management will endeavour to keep our Club at the forefront and make it the place to be in 2012.

Wishing all members and their families and friends health and happiness in the year ahead.

Keith aggett

President

The 2012 Season is underway with the Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers back in training under Coach Paul Fletcher.

This year’s squad will have an entirely new look with only a handful of players from the previous season, and some exciting new faces to form what is hoped a most competitive team.

Trial matches have been scheduled as follows:-

• Saturday4thFebruaryversus Wests Illawarra at Parish Park, Illawarra.

• Saturday11thFebruaryversus Wentworthville at Blue Tongue Stadium, Gosford.

• Saturday18thFebruaryversus Newtown at Campbelltown Stadium, Campbelltown.

Times for these trials will be posted on the Club’s notice board.

The Competition will commence on the weekend of 1st to 3rd March, with a home game at Leichhardt Oval.

So supporters, get your vocal chords in tune for another great year of Rugby League.

CAMERA CLUB 2011 has been a wonderful photographic year for us. Presentations, digital workshops, guest speakers, photographic gems, outings to magical places. Even when the images don’t quite meet our expectations or the judge says hume, the activity is still so worthwhile. We learn, as do all photographers, from our experiences and the support of our members, who are always willing to share their experiences. Our year came to a most memorable and enjoyable conclusion, with the annual Christmas dinner and award presentations. Family and friends shared in a viewing of images presented by club members, and cast their vote for the image of their choice. Photography aside, what a banquet was prepared for us to enjoy. We would like to extend our appreciation to Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and its Directors for their generous support on this festive occasion, and for their ongoing support throughout the year. 2012 promises to be another year of enjoyment and opportunity. Such areas as Mat cutting and mounting prints (always useful), landscape photography, Flash photography, Street and City Life photography are some of the areas that will be presented to club members. Why not come and join us and share in these presentations, as well as the friendship and expertise of our members. We all have a camera. Why not learn in a fun way how to capture those special moments and surprise your family. Our web site is at www.pbase.com/relccc.We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, 13th February at 8.00 pm. John Maynard

CHESS CLUB Our 2011 club champion is newcomer, Donato Mallari, who scored 4/5. Congratulations to Donato who lost only one game to Rob Watson, and won all his others in the Final. Equal second were Joshua Christensen and Don Patterson on 3/5. Lorenzo Escalante and Rob Watson, each on 2/5, tied for fourth place. Bill Gletsos on 1/5 was sixth. The Bobby Fischer Cup, a rapid play event, resulted in a victory for Arthur Huynh who finished just above second-placegetter Joshua Christensen. Nicholas Brown did well to finish third. In the under 1600 division of the Cup, Ken Salim was first with James Hickey second, and John Muller third. The Ryde–Eastwood Classic (for those who did not make the Final of our club championship) resulted in a tie for first between Frank Pacey and Egon Cardenas. Division two of the Classic also resulted in a tie for first between Karl Kirillov and Les Mikolajczyk. Congratulations to all the prize-winners in the above events and thanks to all participants. Our year ended with our presentation to prize-winners and annual dinner on 7th December – a great way to finish the year. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. Prospective members are invited to visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com For more information, please contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970059), Greig Edwards (0416 248223) or myself Dennis Hale (9484 1435).

THE FISHING CLUBWelcome to the new 2012 year of fishing. Last year’s fishing had mixed results with weather conditions. The LJ Hayes Trophy for the heaviest weight of edible fish was won in 2011 by Michael Cheng with 46.9 kg. Runner up was Winnie Lo with 30.3kg, and Peter Michniewicz finished with 22kg. The winner of the Keith Aggett Trophy

in 2011 for Fisherman of the Year was Paul Burnett with a 2.5kg salmon. Paul was also second runner-up with a 1.6kg Mowong. Third place went to George Varga with a 5.1kg Teraglin. Congratulations to the winners. Most outings will be held on the first Sunday of the month with some changes this year with no trips in May and August. However, there are two trips in April, July and September (more details at our regular monthly meetings). All Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Members are welcome to join the outing as guest members. The departure time is 5.30am and the return time is 2pm. The boat is a 53-footer with a toilet facility and plenty of space on deck. The cost is $50, which is much cheaper than the current commercial rate of $70 -$100. Fishing gear is available for hire for $5 but baits are not included. Club members contact Mr. Nic Ceh on 9858 2412. Or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm for details. The fishing spots are generally about 5km east of North Head at about 25-40 fathoms deep. Fish caught include Mowongs, Flathead, Snapper, Sweeps and Pigfish. Upcoming Outings: Sunday 16th February, Sunday 15th March. Happy New Year,Trevor Fahey – President Fishing Club.

GOLF CLUB The third round championships at Lynwood was called off after 9 holes due to bad weather. The eventual third round at Blackheath saw Juan Quintas win the day with a net 72, with Natalie P. runner-up with a net 73. The final round was at Windsor with Ross Neville (net 67) narrowly beating Daryl Alwood (net 68). This game was the Medal of Medals event, and congratulations to the 2011 winner – Daryl Alwood. Congratulations to the 2011 champions, A grade – Rick Beves, and B grade - Ross Neville. Runner-up trophies are awarded to A grade Robert Wood, and Alan Henderson and B grade Juan Quintas. The final trophy event for the year was the Guzzler’s Cup at Muirfield, the winner on the day Slava Sokolov with 40 points, and a close second was Juan Quintas with 39 points. The guzzler for 2011 is Juan Quintas. A highlight for Tony Tedesco was an eagle on the 1st hole; he was a 178 m out and hit an absolute screamer of a shot to put the ball 1 metre from the hole. Our presentation night was held in early December and congratulations to all our winners. A special mention must be made to Popular Dom and don’t forget the wisdom of our captain – getting in super early to wish us all a very Happy Easter! Penrith saw Ross Neville on fire in A grade with 41 points with Tony Campbell runner-up on 36 points. B grade had a count back battle with Brian Ewin narrowly beating Slava Sokolov. On the annual Hams Day congratulations to Valery Perederienko and Robert Wood with 78 points, taking out the half-leg hams. Runner-up hams were awarded to Ross Neville and Daryl Alwood with 73 points, and the hampers went to Peter Walsh and Juan Quintas on 72 points. We look forward to seeing you next year for some new courses and great golf. INDOOR BOWLSThe presentation dinners in 2011 were very enjoyable. Special thanks to Sidney Ho and his staff for the excellent catering. We were very pleased that our patron, Mr. Jack King, attended both dinners and was looking very well. Wednesday’s Lady Consistency Winner was Claire Grebert with Irene Mulcahy runner-up. Thursday night Lady Consistency Winner was Cath Lynn, runner-up Betty Beck. Men’s winner Jim Harvey was very closely followed by Jeffrey Tam. Some of our ladies have spent time in hospital in 2011 – Gwen Aspinall, Ruby Wood, Norma Brisset, Joan Griffiths and Nancy Day. We wish them better health in 2012. Thank you to the President and Directors of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club for their continued interest and support of indoor bowls. New members are always welcome. We have a friendly and helpful group. For enquiries ring Sheila on 9869 7693 or Merle on 9874 5733.

SENIORS CLUB We hope all our Members and Staff at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club had a Happy and Healthy New Year. In 2011 three of our long time members passed away; Norma Wilson (who had been ill for a long time), Margaret Cordina and Violet Codling. Our love and condolences go to their families. Our President, Betty Beck, was presented with an Award by the Club for her

services to the Seniors Club, and has been President for the past eleven years. We had an interesting year with lots of trips, both extended holidays and day trips – some good, some interesting and occasionally difficult ones. We hope that all our members bear with us and we will go on having fun and meeting new people in 2012.Our Christmas Lunch – as always thanks to Sidney for his wonderful menu – was again faultless and well attended. I would like to thank Mr Chris McCarthy, Lisa , Kim, Kerry, Sandy and all the REL Staff for their continuing support and who are always there to help if needed. It is greatly appreciated. A reminder to all our members that our Annual General Meeting will be held on 16th February. Eight members of the Committee will be standing again, however our President has announced her retirement and we will be hoping to find a replacement for Ron Cory as well , who retired in 2011. Enquiries contact Marie Weston on 9638 7419.

SQUASH CLUBAt the time of writing, we have just completed the Spring Competition. The Squash Club has only two teams competing this time around, Division 5 and Division 8. The Division 5 team, consisting of Scott Young, Richard Massey, Joe Morrissey, Dave Badger and Glenn Bridge, had a ‘sterling’ competition and came ‘runner up’ to Wentworthville Leagues Club, who were Premiers, by a significant margin (324 points) versus Ryde Eastwood Leagues (223 points). Well done guys, you had a wonderful comp considering the ‘walking wounded’. The Division 8 team had great comp also, with a hard fought 4th place. Great effort, guys. Better luck next year. Not much more to report, other than a great night was had by all at the Annual Squash Presentation Dinner held in November. It was great to see some of the old faces from years gone by attending the dinner. A big thank you must go to Ernie Speed for tracking down so many of the old members of the club and for organising the event. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Leagues Club for its ongoing support of the Squash Club; it is very much appreciated by all the players. Remember, we are always looking for squash players, so if you are interested please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. Just a thought:“You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough”

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUBOur Christmas dinner at the club was again something special. On behalf of our members a vote of thanks to the management and staff for their support and use of the facilities, and we wish them a prosperous 2012. Games and dates for 2012 have been confirmed, as already notified. The first game is on Sunday 26th February and our host club is Towradji Bowling Club. The coach leaves Rude-Eastwood Leagues Club at 9.30am. Could you please advise your attendance to one of the numbers below seven to ten days before the trip so as to allow for coach booking numbers? We attend all venues regardless of weather conditions. Also to advise our AGM meeting will be held on Thursday 2nd February at 7pm in one of the club’s function rooms. All members are welcome. For all membership and outings information please contact Marie Crawley on 9684 1023 or Bob Freeland on 9644 4792. Looking forward to your support. Happy bowling. R. Freeland.

TRAVEL CLUBI hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas and all the best for a happy and healthy New Year. During the last few months the members had an enjoyable trip to Gloucester and the Barrington Tops, and our annual Melbourne Cup party went off well. The best decorated Man’s hat was won by Dennis Taylor, with our president, Yvonne Steel, wearing the best Ladies’ hat. Christmas was also celebrated in fine style with our party on 15th December. The event was well attended and everyone enjoyed themselves. The New Year will bring a harbour cruise in February and a trip in March to Buttai Barn to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. A much anticipated long term event is our six day trip to Lightning Ridge via Dubbo and returning via Warrumbungles, which will take place in May. Our Annual General meeting will take place at the club before our meeting on Tuesday 7th February when there will be an election of officer bearers for the year 2012. Also our annual subs of $5 are due. We welcome new members and if you wish to join us, we meet at the club on the first Tuesday of the month at 2pm. For any further information please contact our secretary, Margaret Dollar on 9898 3332.

BRIDGE CLUB REUNIONTHE FIJI “SUGAR BARONS” MEET AGAINBack in the 1960s people from all over the Commonwealth came to Fiji to administer the growth of industry and infrastructure. In their time off they would meet at clubs and play bridge.

Two ex-Fiji “Sugar Barons”, Maurice Abrahams and Phillip Hawke, have been club members for 30 years and play at our regular games on Monday afternoons (from 12.45pm) and Tuesday nights (from 7.10pm). Our bridge organizer, John Newman, became aware that two other expatriate Fijians were playing elsewhere, Bryan Robertson at the Northern Beaches and Anna Dickson in Mosman. He organized a dinner and bridge date at the club for the four to get together again after over forty years! Here they are below recapturing their past together.

From February onwards, as well as our two regular games, we will be conducting a supervised play session each Monday from 10am to 12.30pm for people who play socially but want supervised instruction. No partner is needed, just come along and enjoy the company. Cost for members is $6, non members $8. For details phone John on 9888 3903.

Some of our pre-schoolers in action

Keep Your Little Ones Safe This Summer Let us help you to start your little ones on the road to being water safe and confident. Come and see us in the Swim School so we can

teach your little ones (and you as well!) the life skill of swimming and water safety.

We have a number of pre-schoolers and baby positions available in our Swim School. Classes run Monday to Friday 11-12.30pm, and we

have limited positions on Saturday for our pre-schoolers only, from 8-12pm. Please contact 9808 7617 for more info.

Toddlers are curious by nature and often attracted by water. However, they have little fear or understanding of the possible dangers posed.

As they learn to crawl and walk, their ability to access water hazards such as pools, spas, and buckets is greatly increased. Toddlers tend

to be ‘top heavy’ and can therefore easily lose balance and fall into bodies of water. Children can drown in as little as a few centimetres of

water, so items such as inflatable swimming pools, baths, and nappy buckets all pose a drowning hazard.

According to the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia, 49% of children aged 0-4 who drowned did so in a swimming pool. The Fitness

Edge Swim School recommends that parents and carers take the following precautions to reduce the risk of childhood drowning:

suPeRVise:

• Ensure constant and active supervision.

• Remain within an arm’s reach of young children as they can drown quickly and silently.

• Never leave a young child unsupervised; always take your child with you if you have to leave the water area, even if you are only gone for a short period.

• Don’t expect older children to look after younger siblings. Children have short attention spans and can be easily distracted.

• Nominate a parent or carer to supervise any children near the water when you have visitors.

ReduCe the haZaRd:

• Restrict your child’s access to water through safety barriers such as pool fencing. The legislation surrounding pool fencing differs between the states and territories of australia. Contact your local authority or government agency for information on pool fencing regulations in your area.

• Don’t leave objects near a pool fence that will enable children to climb into a pool, e.g. pot plants and chairs.

• Don‘t leave any gates or doors propped open that might allow children access to a body of water.

• Create a safe play area for children, especially on farms and large properties, which are separated from bodies of

water such as swimming pools, dams and water troughs.

For Swim School inquiries please call our office staff on 9808 7617. Office hours are Mon to Fri from 10am to 6pm and

sat 8am to 1pm, or visit our website for more information at www.releagues.com.au and click on Swim School.
