President’s ReportDear Members,It is with great sadness that I advise you of the passing of Foundation Life Member and Club pioneer, Wally Webster. Wally played a pivotal role in the founding of Wenty Leagues and over his time played Rugby League for the Wenty Magpies, served on the Club Board and as the Secretary, and worked as the General Manager for the Club. On behalf of the Wenty Leagues Board, Management, staff and members I send our condolences to his wife Gillian and the Webster family.

Dave Brace, Wenty Leagues’ CeO since 2008, has moved on to the position of CeO at Canterbury League Club. During his time, the team has achieved many great things as mentioned in his report. I’d like to extend many thanks to Dave for his work over the years.Wenty Leagues has recently become one of the first companies to support the Rural Fire Service’s Supportive employer Program. The Board and Management are immensely proud to support this initiative, as are Wenty Leagues staff who volunteer their time to aid emergency efforts. More information regarding this program is available on page 3 of this Journal. With the 2013 NRL season underway, we’re excited to have live coverage of matches on the big screens in the Magpie Sports Bar including our NSW Cup Wenty Magpies featured in 3 live games this season. The Grandstand at Ringrose has been demolished to make way for our brand new Grandstand. Weather permitting, the Grandstand will be completed by the end of the 2013 football season. The complex is due to include a squared-off spectators stand with undercover seating, a referee room and a first aid room. Our entertainment line-up is sure to be a hit in the coming months with favourites, The Frocks coming back to Wenty to perform in Starlight on Saturday 25 May. Plus we have some big name comedy acts appearing for the first time including Kevin Bloody Wilson and Jimeoin. Make sure you do not miss these hilarious performers for a great night out. We’re also giving you the chance to spoil mum on Mother’s Day, Sunday 12 May, with a special Mother’s Day breakfast menu from Lawsons Bistro. Plus we’ll have a Mother’s Day raffle and clowns to keep the kids entertained whilst mum relaxes.A reminder that the 55th Annual General Meeting of Wentworthville Leagues Club will be held at the premises of the Club on Sunday 26 May 2013 commencing at 10am. Any questions of a financial or detailed nature arising from the Annual Report as issued, or in General Business are to be made in writing and forwarded to the Secretary at least seven (7) days prior to the meeting (Closes 10am, Sunday 19 May, 2013).Ian McCannPresident

CEO’s ReportDear Members,My time as CeO of Wenty Leagues has come to an end as I have accepted a new role as CeO of Canterbury League Club. As I reflect on the past five years I acknowledge the hard work from everyone involved with Wenty Leagues. Our Board led by President Ian McCann has shown great vision with a detailed master plan that addressed all aspects of our business. Our structure and corporate governance were reviewed and now are

described by our auditor as corporate and very professional. A plan to employ our assets in a highest and best use approach led to our current fit for market renovation. To roll out this plan we reviewed and invested in all aspects of our operation including technology. Some hard decisions were made as we negotiated ourselves through a world of non-smoking, higher taxes and increased regulation. examples of this are the selling of assets that were not benefiting the main club and the closure of three satellite clubs. Many aspects of the plan included approvals that were extremely difficult to obtain such as access from the Great Western highway, access over the canal, the transfer of 102 Poker Machine Licences from Parramatta, the continuation of Car Parking into a residential area and tricky and emotive negotiations with neighbouring residents to acquire their property. We rationalised in some areas however maintained our funding of our 18 Sub Clubs including the provision of facilities. The most pleasing aspect of this planning process is that we have realised our goals and have a wonderful facility that is fully renovated, efficient and has a profitable and growing revenue stream. The entire team has worked extremely hard to achieve this and are extremely proud of the results. We have maintained better than market growth during the renovation where interruptions were kept to a minimum and the 2012 profit of over $2.6 million would have been close to a record except for write offs in the amount of $556,346 that are always associated with large development works. Our 2008 membership count of 29,000 has soared to over 43,000 and we have been signing around 1,000 members per month who want to experience our new facilities. As I move on and assume my new role as CeO of Canterbury League Club, Wenty Leagues CFO Mark Sheridan has been appointed by the Board as our interim CeO.I would like to thank everyone, including the Board of Directors, Management team, staff and members for the support shown to me during my years at Wenty Leagues. I look forward to hearing further great news and successes from Wenty Leagues in the future.Dave Brace Chief executive Officer

Community

This past summer will be remembered as one that suffered the adverse and unpredictable weather conditions of the harsh Australian climate. As many people struggled with the summer heat and soaring temperatures, the fires became a focal point for many Australians including those who needed help, those brave enough to fight for the safety of others and people who felt more needed to be done to aid in a time of crisis.

The Wentworthville Leagues Club Board and Management discussed the unfortunate events that swept across the state of New South Wales with many empathising with those who were affected. In January, the Board introduced a Policy which aims to assist our staff who work for volunteer disaster relief organisations.

Wenty Leagues staff such as Food and Beverage Manager Adam Streichler, who assisted with the Coonabarabran fires during the week ending 18 January, initially took annual leave to fight the fires. As a token of goodwill, the Board reinstated Adam’s Annual Leave and implemented emergency Service Leave which sees staff receive a week’s worth of paid leave in addition to Annual Leave.

Wenty Leagues has always strived to stand out as a leader and employer of choice in the local community and this policy is a great example of how we work in the interest of the community.

The official launch of the Supportive employer Program, which was held at Wenty Leagues on Wednesday 6 March, was attended by Michael Gallacher the Minister for Police and emergency Services, Shane Fitzsimmons the Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service and volunteer firefighters who praised Wenty Leagues’ introduction of emergency Service Leave.

Wallace Frederick Webster (O.A.M)1928 – 2013Wally Webster has been a part of Wenty Leagues since its inception in the late 1940s and through the mid-1950s.

In 1948 Wally was selected to play for the Under 21 Rugby League side and won the season’s trophy for the Best & Fairest Player. Wally continued his Rugby League career in 1949 and 1950 representing the Magpies in the Western Division. By 1951 a proposal to build a club premises was put forward but was rejected due to a lack of interest. In 1952 the same proposal was also rejected.

In 1953 Wally decided that if a club was to be built, more funds would be needed. 1956 saw a General Committee form for a Leagues Club and Wally was instated Secretary of this Committee.

Foundation Life Membership was offered as a means to raise money to build up the Club, and along with Barry Moulds and Jim Docking, Wally put 10 Pounds ($20.00) on the table. From this, Wentworthville Leagues Club registered as a company on 12 August 1958 and the first 46 Foundation Life Members were admitted by the Board of Directors on 11 September 1958.

In his personal life, Wally married the love of his life Gillian Martin on 6 June 1959. Together they would hold many barbecues at their home to help raise funds for the Club.

In 1962 Wally became the Club’s first appointed permanent Secretary. he was also General Manager of the Club for 10 years. After 25 years as the administrative head of the Club, he retired but later

returned as a Director on the Board from 1993 till 2004.

In 2000, Wally Webster was awarded the Australian Sports Medal (A.S.M.) and in 2010, for service to the community of Wentworthville through a range of sporting organisations; he received the Order of Australia Medal (O.A.M.)

Wally will forever be known as a prolific character for his role founding Wenty Leagues and we are all eternally grateful for his contribution to the Club over his lifetime.

On Saturday 16 February, Wenty Leagues’ Junior Rugby League Club hosted the special needs rugby league coaching clinic at Ringrose for 35 children.
