2011 President’s Review
The last twelve months has seen a consolidation of planning in order to reach our fundraising target of $1.8 m for the quadrennium culminating with the 2012 Olympic Games. We are indeed fortunate to have a very solid Fundraising Committee, under the Chairmanship of John Conde AO, as well as regional committees established in the Illawarra and Hunter areas under the leadership of Gareth McKeen and Kelly Lofberg respectively. On 27 July, 2011, the “One Year to Go” Dinner was an outstanding success raising over $530,000. Some 700 patrons and 70 Olympians enjoyed a British themed evening which inspired a positive “vibe” for the 2012 Olympic Games. That morning, a number of NSW based Olympians joined BK (the Boxing Kangaroo) and two British Beefeaters on board a red London double decked bus at Circular Quay. The next major Sydney dinner will be held on 16 May, 2012 as a “Farewell to the Athletes” before their departure for London. In order to boost the London team appeal, your Executive made the decision to donate another $50,000, making our total contribution $100,000 for the quadrennial Olympic period. These funds were derived from distributions from our investments, and were welcomed by the AOC in these difficult financial times. In the lead up to the 2011 Dinner, NSWOC supported the British Consulate in hosting a “500 Days to Go” event at the Consul-General’s Sydney residence. This occasion afforded the opportunity for the Consul-General, Mr Richard Morris to welcome the new British High Commissioner to Australia, His Excellency, Mr Paul Madden, and to update the numerous British business leaders in attendance on progress towards the London 2012 Olympic Games. Early in the year, we experienced a very special “feel good” moment when we organised the dedication of a new “updated” plaque for the Barrenjoey Fountain in Victoria Park, Broadway to recognise all crew members from Australia’s first sailing Olympic gold medal (Tokyo, 1964). Previously, only the Skipper, Bill Northam, was named on the plaque. Special guest Dick Sargeant, and his family, as well as the families of Bill Northam and Peter “Pod” O’Donnell attended along with friends from the sailing fraternity. Our thanks are extended to the Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, and the City of Sydney Council for working with us to achieve such a positive and welcomed result. Another special moment occurred when the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE), Redfern, was awarded the IOC Trophy for “Sport and Social Responsibility”. This Centre offers a range of excellent facilities, and provides outstanding programs for young indigenous people across Australia, as well as the local community. At the 2011 Annual General Meeting, the NSWOC Order of Merit was presented to Luke Borreggine from the sport of Weightlifting, and Jim Hull, Chairman, Ryde Sports Foundation for their contribution to the development of sport in their respective areas. On the education front, the Pierre de Coubertin Award continues to attract large numbers of nominations, and two 2010 recipients – Dylan Turner and Marlee Barber - were selected to attend the International Youth Forum in Beijing during August, as part of the Australian contingent. We also took part in sessions of “Talk to a Champ” in Orange and Tamworth where Olympians interacted with students from a number of schools. Just recently, we were delighted to see two young women from the NSW Central Coast achieve medal-winning performances in the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games, held in Innsbruck, Austria from 13 – 24 January, 2012. Snowboarder Alex Fitch and ice hockey player Sharnita Crompton both won bronze medals in their respective events. Alex also achieved a 4
th place in the halfpipe event, and proudly carried the Australian flag in
the Closing Ceremony. The financial support of the AOC and NSW Sport and Recreation is gratefully acknowledged. We are indeed privileged to work closely with staff in the AOC, on a day to day basis, and their assistance and cooperation on numerous projects enables us to achieve a high work output with minimum staff. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my personal appreciation to the members of the NSWOC Executive. The ongoing commitment and contribution to Council from Doug Donoghue, Geoff Davidson, Shane Alvisio, Peter Hadfield, Robert Lawton, Peter Lozan and Linda McLaren has been invaluable. In addition, the

work of the Executive Director, James Edwards, and our Executive Assistant, Georgie Exton is without peer, and has set a formidable benchmark for all other State Olympic Councils. We achieve so much, purely as a result of their expertise and dedication to supporting our athletes and efficiently implementing the programs and events which are scheduled throughout the year. Thank you! The commitment shown by our member sports continues unabated. It is a credit to your respective organisations, and the wonderful volunteers who assist you, that your athletes are provided with outstanding opportunities to excel and inspire us all. With only 4 months to go (indeed just 129 days) from our AGM until the Australian Team of some 400 athletes march into the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, excitement is building amongst our sports. Some athletes have already been selected, but for others the “crunch time“ is yet to come with qualification events scheduled over the next two months. For the athletes, Olympic representation is the pinnacle of their sporting life, and indeed the realisation of their dreams. We wish them every success as they take on the world in London!

2011 Executive Director’s Review
2011 has been a busy year in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. As we go to print our fundraising campaign is in full swing and all the general interest and momentum in the Olympic Movement continues to rise. 2011 had numerous highlights: On 6 April 2011, the dedication of a new plaque to the crew of the Barrenjoey, Australia’s first Gold Medallists in Tokyo 1964 was a great moment. The yachting fraternity and families of all three Olympians Sir William “Bill” Northam C.B.E, Peter “Pod” O’Donnell and Dick Sargeant (our only surviving member) attended the service at Lake Northam, Victoria Park. The plaque upgrade to recognise all three Olympians was instigated by Geoff Davidson. The gesture was appreciated by the families, and the event was enjoyed by all who attended. In May 2011 at the Australian Olympic Committee’s Annual General Meeting in Sydney, Helen Brownlee OAM, President of the NSW Olympic Council and Executive Board Member of the Australian Olympic Committee was awarded Life Membership to the Australian Olympic Committee. As the press release stated at the time: ‘Pioneer for Women in Sport honoured by Olympic Committee: After devoting much of her life to the sport of canoeing as a competitor, judge and administrator Helen Brownlee has been honoured as the first woman awarded life membership of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC)’. The citation included Helen’s advocacy for women in sport and the significant role Helen plays in Olympic Education on behalf of the IOC. Congratulations Helen. The NSW Olympic Council continues to support the initiatives of the NSW Olympians Club, including in 2011 the annual Race Day at Randwick on 11 June and the Harbour Cruise on 15 September. Both were great events and we look forward to the next instalments in 2012. Fundraising The financial statement (on the final page) reports $1,226,389 funds raised at the close of 2011. We plan to go beyond the $1.8 million target before July 2012. All funds raised for the 2012 Team Appeal go directly to prepare and send the 2012 Australian Olympic Team to London. 2011 saw the fundraising campaign begin in earnest with the major Sydney Dinner, ‘One Year to Go’ taking place on 27 July at the Sydney Convention Centre. The event raised over $530,000 (net profit) for the 2012 Team Fund. With over 700 guests attending, we were pleased with this result which re-affirms the strong community and corporate support for the Australian Olympic Team. Over 70 Olympians were in attendance, including the triple world champion track cyclist Anna Meares OAM - aiming for Gold in London. Channel 9’s Peter Overton guided the evening which featured the ‘best of British’ entertainment, guided by our MC Peter Overton from the Nine Network. Our special thanks to Andrea Webster for producing another great event.

The dinner was hosted by John Conde AO, Chairman AOC’s (NSW) Fundraising Committee for London, and Mr John Coates AC, President Australian Olympic Committee and IOC Executive Board Member. Nick Green OAM, Chef de Mission 2012 Australian Olympic provided a preview of London with Olympic legends like Kieren Perkins OAM who will accompany the Team as an Athlete Liason Officer. Also in attendance was the Hon. Barry O’Farrell MP, Premier of NSW - and Patron of the AOC’s (NSW) Fundraising Committee; Senator the Hon. Mark Arbib MP, Federal Minister for Sport; The Hon. Graham Annesley MP, NSW Minister for Sport; Mr Paul Madden, British High Commissioner to Australia; and Mr Richard Morris, British Consul General in Sydney. One lucky couple won the bidding to attend the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. The AOC’s (NSW) Fundraising Committee for London, Chaired by John Conde AO has once again steadfastly supported our event program, and is actively selling for our future events. The NSWOC, AOC and 2012 Team is indebted to this Committee for their strong support of our events which raise much needed funds for the 2012 Team. Regional Fundraising The NSWOC has a tradition of working with our regional centres who have for many years proudly held events to assist the Team Appeal. The Illawarra and Hunter have once again arranged events for the 2012 Team. As we go to print the Illawarra Appeal Dinner has just been held on 13 March 2012 at the Novotel Northbeach Wollongong which raised over $50,000 (net) for the Team. Over 350 people attended, including 30 Olympians, lead by MC Lisa Forrest. Committee Chair Gareth McKeen and the Illawarra Appeal Committee delivered a sensational event with a great local flavour. Craig Phillips, Secretary General, provided an insight on London’s preparation and our Team’s progress. Tim Gilbert from Channel 9 interviewed London Prospective athletes Dani Samuels (Beijing Olympian), Ryan Gregson and Emily Esposito. A special interview was conducted with the Beijing 2008 Equestrian Silver Medallist Shane Rose on his extraordinary career set-backs only to finally make the Beijing Team and win a Silver Medal. Gilbert also spoke with Olympians Ray Smee OAM (Water Polo 1952, 1096), Mark Tonelli (1976, 1980 Gold Medallist), Michelle Ferris (Cycling 1996 Silver Medal, 2000 Silver Medal), Amy Hetzel (Beijing Bronze Medal in Water Polo) and Peter Hadfield OAM (Athletics 1980, 1984) who all offered their unique perspectives on the Olympic Games from different eras and sports. Coming up, the Hunter Appeal Dinner is due to take place on 30 March, followed by the second major dinner in Sydney on 16 May. This Athlete Farewell Dinner is the second of two dinners in Sydney and will celebrate our 2012 Team before they depart for London. The Carbine Club of NSW has been most generous with a payment to the Team Appeal in 2011 of $25,000. My sincere thanks to our NSW Olympic Council Executive and especially to President Helen Brownlee OAM and Vice Presidents Doug Donoghue AM and Geoff Davidson for their continual support. The NSWOC would like to thank the AOC for their constant support – to John Coates AC, President and Craig Phillips, Secretary General, the Executive Board, Directors and staff- all of whose help is which is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Georgie Exton who has been promoted to the role of Coordinator and who keeps the operation moving, and more recently to Samantha Walker who has joined the team. Olympic Education
2011 Pierre de Coubertin Awards The NSW State Presentation of the Pierre de Coubertin Awards was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on 24 June 2011 attended by Ms Helen Brownlee OAM, President NSW Olympic Council, and special guest Steven Wooldridge OAM, Olympic Gold Medallist in the sport of Track Cycling from Athens 2004. One hundred students were recognised at this State Award Ceremony. The Pierre de Coubertin Award is granted by the AOC (NSWOC) to senior students who are nominated by their school for displaying excellence in sport and importantly, demonstrating sportsmanship. In conveying this award, the AOC recognises sports people who not only play the game well, but uphold the Olympic virtues of fair play. Students are selected by their schools and are often role models for students in their own right. Having spent a full day with them, the NSW Olympic Council was once again encouraged by the exceptionally high calibre of students who are nominated for this award. Several Australian Olympians joined the Academy to impart their knowledge to the students. Kerri Pottharst OAM (triple Olympian in Beach Volleyball, Atlanta 1996 Bronze Medallist, Sydney 2000, Gold Medallist and Athens 2004) had the student’s undivided attention with her presentation entitled “Turning Bronze into Gold”, describing the highs and lows of her Olympic journey while providing inspirational insight into setting goals and striving for excellence. Kate Hollywood (Hockey, Beijing 2008) was joined by winter dual Olympians Hannah Campbell-Pegg (Luge, Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2012) and Jeremy Rolleston (Bobsleigh, Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010) who provided an interactive presentation on their Olympic experiences and life as an athlete. The Pierre de Coubertin Award is open to all secondary schools in NSW. The take-up in 2011 was very encouraging with a total of 337 Award recipients. The Pierre de Coubertin Award Program has now been successfully run for 19 years.

2011 Talk With a Champ Schools in regional NSW were given the opportunity to participate in the Australian Olympic Committee’s Talk with a Champ program during October. Part of the a.s.p.i.r.e. school network, Talk with a Champ is an Olympic education initiative linking secondary school students with Olympic champions. The one hour discussion is themed on the Australian Olympic Team’s ‘a.s.p.i.r.e.’ values: namely Attitude, Sportsmanship, Pride, Respect, Individual responsibility and Express yourself. The program, aimed at Year 9 and 10 students, features two outstanding Australian Olympians talking about the highs and lows of their sporting careers while stressing the positive impact sport has had on their lives. Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange hosted the first session which comprised of 300 students from surrounding schools. Suzie Balogh OAM, Shooting (Gold Medal) from Athens 2004 and Amy Hetzel, Water Polo (Bronze Medal) from Beijing 2008 engaged the students with their Olympic journey. The second session took place in Tamworth hosted by Peel High School, where Amy Hetzel was joined by fellow Olympian and team mate Rebecca Rippon, Water Polo Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 (Bronze Medal). Each discussion was webcast live to the AOC’s website. Visual media, question and answer and autograph signing also featured during the sessions. Primary Schools Yeoval Central School, Yeoval and Tintinhull Public School, Tamworth were also visited as part of the regional tour. Amy Hetzel spoke to students at each school in an interactive forum, which was received with great enthusiasm amongst students and teachers alike. Talk with a Champ highlights the Olympic sport traditions and values to teach life values and life skills to primary and secondary school students.

International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum Held every two years, the AOC was represented at the 2011 Youth Forum by a team of eight Year 12 students, under the direction of Bethanie Kearney (President, TAS Olympians Club and a current PE teacher) and NSW Olympic Council President, Helen Brownlee. The students were selected by their respective State Olympic Council’s from those students who had received the AOC Pierre de Coubertin Award in 2010. The NSW students were Dylan Turner and Marlee Barber. The students met at Sydney Olympic Park for a one-day orientation program before flying to Beijing. The Forum was conducted at the Beijing High School No 4, from 13 – 21 August, 2011, with accommodation in the school dormitories - which, along with meals, proved to be an interesting cultural experience! There were 113 student participants from 19 countries taking part in lectures, discussion groups, arts performances, sports activities including Tai Chi, and an Olympic knowledge test. Cultural visits to the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China were highlights, along with a visit to Beijing’s Olympic Park, taking in “The Birds Nest” (Olympic Stadium) and the “Water Cube” (Aquatic Centre). By successfully completing all the components of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee (CIPC) Award, all members of the Australian contingent received the Coubertin Medal at the Closing Ceremony. All in all, the students had an amazing experience, with many memorable moments they will treasure for a lifetime.

Olympians Club of NSW: President’s Review 2011
It is now less than six months to the London Games and the build-up over the past year has provided a degree of excitement to all members of the Olympians Club. After the success of the 2010 event, an Olympians Club Race Day was again held at Royal Randwick on 11th June. Those Olympians and guests who attended enjoyed the day immensely although the numbers were down from the previous year with the AJC increasing the ticket price
To celebrate the 11th Anniversary of the Opening Ceremony for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and the build-up to the London Games, the Annual Olympians Club Dinner was conducted on the magnificent ‘Bella Vista’ on Sydney Harbour. 200 guests enjoyed the wonderful vistas provided by Sydney Harbour and the first class facilities on-board. Deputy Chef de Mission of the Australian 2012 Olympic Team, Kitty Chiller outlined the Team’s preparations for London as well as a sneak preview of the London sporting venues. Two things were confirmed on the night. The Thames River in London isn’t a patch on the beauty provided by Sydney Harbour! And Olympians of all ages proved that they still have plenty of stamina as they kicked on well into the night. Effective communications to Olympians and attracting Olympians Club Members to our events continues to be a challenge. The ratio of Olympians to general guests at our events remains low, despite the positive feedback received regarding the quality of the events provided and the enjoyment achieved by attending Olympians at our events. The Executive Committee would encourage all Olympians to attend the events but to also personally spread the work to encourage their team mates to do the same. Two events are planned for 2012 – a simple get-together of Olympians at an English style pub in April/May and we are looking to join forces with the AOC and the NSWOC as a part of the “Welcome Home” activities for the London team in August. Stay tuned. Thank you to the Olympians Club Executive members for the contribution they have made to the success of the Club and the events conducted this year. Sincere thanks to the AOC and the NSW Olympic Council for their on-going support of the Olympians Club and a special thanks to James Edwards and Georgie Exton for their active involvement and assistance.

NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL INC. NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2011 (1) CORPORATE INFORMATION
The financial report of the New South Wales Olympic Council Inc. (‘NSWOC’ or ‘Council’) for the year ended 31 December 2011 was authorised for issue in accordance with a resolution of the Executive Board on 8

(2) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
The significant policies which have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are:
(a) Basis of preparation
This special purpose financial report has been prepared for distribution to the members to fulfil the committee of managements’ (“Executive Board”) financial reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 of the New South Wales and the Council’s constitution. The accounting policies used in the preparation of this financial report, as described below, are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 of New South Wales and the Council’s constitution, and are, in the opinion of the Executive Board, appropriate to meet the needs of members:
(i) The financial report has been prepared on an accrual basis of accounting including the
historical cost convention and the going concern assumption.
(ii) The Council is not a reporting entity because in the opinion of the Executive there are unlikely to exist users of the financial report who are unable to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy specifically all of their information needs.
The members neither hold equity in, nor are financial lenders to, the Council and their membership is pursuant to the Olympic Charter as well as the Constitution.

NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL INC. NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2011
(a) Basis of preparation (Con’t)
Accordingly, the financial report has been prepared in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 of New South Wales and the Council’s Constitution, the basis of accounting specified by all Accounting Standards and Interpretations and the disclosure requirements of AASB 101 ‘Presentation of Financial Statements’, AASB 107 ‘Cash Flow Statements’, AASB 108 ‘Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors’, AASB 1031 ‘Materiality and AASB 1048 Interpretation and Application of Standards’ which apply to all entities required to prepare financial reports under the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 of the New South Wales and the Constitution. The Executive have determined that in order for the financial report to give a true and fair view of the Council’s performance, cash flows and financial position, the requirements of Australian Accounting Standards and other financial reporting requirements in Australia relating to the measurement of assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and equity should be complied with.
(iii) The financial report is prepared in Australian dollars.
(b) Statement of compliance
Certain Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations have recently been issued or amended but are not yet effective and have not been adopted by the Council for the annual reporting period ended 31 December 2011. The Executive have not early adopted any of these new or amended standards or interpretations. The Executive have not yet fully assessed the impact of these new or amended standards (to the extent relevant to the Council) and interpretations.
This special purpose financial report complies with Australian Accounting Standards as described above.
(c) Income and expenditure recognition
Income, with the exception of fundraising, has been brought to account on an accrual basis and if not received at balance date is reflected in the statement of financial position as a receivable. Expenses have been brought to account as incurred and any expenses incurred but not paid for at balance date are reflected in the statement of financial position as creditors.
(d) Fundraising
The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc (‘AOC’) and, as a result all funds raised by the NSWOC are recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC.
At 31 December 2011, the NSWOC had raised $1,226,389 (2010: $131,361) towards the 2009 – 2012 Olympic Team Appeal.

(e) Income Tax
The NSWOC is exempt from Australian income tax.
(f) Cash and cash equivalents
The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. (‘AOC’) and, as a result all of the funds raised by the NSWOC are recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC. At 31 December 2011 the NSWOC had no bank account and for administrative purposes all cash transactions are processed by the AOC and the net cash position is reflected in a net receivable account at year end (refer Note 6).
(g) Trade and other receivables
Trade receivables, which generally have 30 – 90 day terms, are recognised and carried at original invoice amount less an allowance for any uncollectible amounts.
An estimate for doubtful debts is made when collection of the full amount is no longer probable. Bad debts are written off when identified.
(h) Property, plant and equipment
Acquisition Items of property, plant and equipment are recorded at cost or, in the case of donations and sponsorship contributions in kind, at fair value at the time of donation or contribution, less accumulated depreciation and any impairment in value.
Depreciation and amortisation Items of plant and equipment are depreciated on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives ranging from 3 to 40 years from the date of acquisition.
Impairment The carrying values of plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment when events or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable.
If any such indication exists and where the carrying values exceed the estimated recoverable amount, the assets are written down to their recoverable amount.
The recoverable amount of plant and equipment is the greater of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. Value in use is the depreciated replacement cost of an asset when the future economic benefits of the asset are not primarily dependent on the asset’s ability to generate net cash inflows and where the NSWOC would, if deprived of the asset, replace its remaining future economic benefits.
