2009 SOCCER

2009 PREVIEW

Heading into the 2009 season, 11th year SNHUwomen’s soccer coach Terry Prouty is excited for theupcoming campaign. While the Penmen did lose threeNortheast-10 All-Conference selections, including a pair ofFirst Teamers (Cary Rivett and Sophia Saint Paul), SouthernNew Hampshire returns 15 players, including eight starters, from a team that went 8-6-4 and qualified for the NE-10Tournament while being ranked as high as No. 17 nationally.

“We did lose some incredible players, but I dothink we’ve had players step up so that we’ll be OK,” saysProuty. “We’ve definitely seenplayers come back confident thatmaybe were a little shy asfreshmen. They’ve now jumpedinto a role where they’re ready toplay.”

The Penmen will becaptained by senior KristinMoore (Weymouth, Mass.) andjunior Kristina Cardoso(Stoughton, Mass.). Moore hasbeen a two-year starter in thebackfield for Southern NewHampshire and has appeared in49 games over her first threeyears. Cardoso was SNHU’sfourth-leading scorer with twogoals and three assists last year, but will likely slide to the backfieldthis season.

“Kristin Moore issomebody who is strong like abull. She’s maybe not the most technical, but she’ll run youdown and do whatever it takes to stop the ball. KrissyCardoso, she’s going to take on a role of sweeping for us,where we’d prefer to put her somewhere else, but we’vehad to make some adjustments,” said Prouty of her twocaptains.

Up front, SNHU will be anchored by a pair ofunderclassmen in sophomore Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I.)and freshman Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H.). SeniorAlyssa Integlia (Johnston, R.I.) should also see plenty oftime up front.

Teixeira garnered Northeast-10 Third Team honorsa season ago as she totaled three goals and three assists. Two of her three goals were game-winners in overtime, including one against sixth-ranked C.W. Post. Roberge, aManchester Memorial HS product, was a three-time All-State selection for the Crusaders. Integlia played in 12games last season, but had a pair of goals as a sophomore.

“K and A, they’re going to be a duo to be reckonedwith. I think those two are just going to be a ball of fireup top. Alyssa Integlia is someone who is a great player,

but has not always shown it. She’snow a senior and has taken on thatrole of ‘It’s my final year, I need tomake a difference’. She’s shownshe’s ready to make a difference,”says Prouty of her forward corps.

Southern New Hampshirereturns five players to the midfieldin addition to Teixeira andInteglia, who can also play there.Senior Alyssa Thayer (Hooksett,N.H.) is SNHU’s leading returningscorer from a season ago as sherecorded four goals and an assistin 2008, her first year in a Penmenuniform after transferring fromSiena. Junior DanielleCourtemanche (Glastonbury,Conn.) was one of five players tostart all 18 games last season. She recorded a pair of goals, including the game-winner in a 2-

1 win over Saint Anselm.Another junior, Andrea Wilson (North Kingstown,

R.I.) played in 17 games last season and figures to play abigger role, along with sophomores Danielle Quinlan(North Andover, Mass.) and Brittany Roberts (Lebanon,N.H.). Quinlan appeared in 16 games and converted apenalty kick in a 1-1 tie at home with Southern Connecticut.Roberts played in five games last season.

The Penmen welcome four freshmen to the middle,Daniela Abruzzese (Parsippany, N.J.), Stephanie Baker(Goffstown, N.H.), Kasey Morrison (Hampton, N.H.) andJackie Squatrito (Pembroke, Mass.).

2009 PREVIEW

Abruzzese, who may also see time in the back, wasa two-time All-State selection who led Morris Catholic HSto the state semifinals as a junior and senior. She alsohelped TSF Academy win a national club title. Baker wasan All-State selection and team captain at Goffstown HS,while Morrison totaled 15 goals and 18 assists as a seniorat Winnacunnet HS while also having played with the NewHampshire ODP program since 2004. Squatrito was aPatriot League All-Star and led her squad at Pembroke HSin scoring as a freshman while also helping the MPS LadyCrusaders to a national clubcrown.

Besides Cardoso, thePenmen return two starters ondefense in junior Sara Martell(Milford, N.J.) and sophomoreEmily Mongeau (Westborough,Mass.). Martell started all 18games last season, while Mongeaustarted all 17 games in which sheappeared and garneredNortheast-10 Second Teamhonors. Junior Allie Muzik(Durham, Conn.) and sophomoreEmily Donahue (Bristol, R.I.) alsoreturn in the back. Muzik playedin five games in 2008, whileDonahue played in 17 games, earning one start.

Freshmen Alex Barba(Hudson, Mass.) and Emily Strese(Gilmanton, N.H.) round out theSNHU backline. Barba was an All-League selection atHudson HS, while Strese played on a Gilford HS defensethat only allowed 13 goals in 16 games and rolled to a 16-0 regular season mark last season.

Graduate student Stef Young (Natick, Mass.)enters the season as the SNHU goalkeeper with the mostexperience. Two years ago, she led the NE-10 in goals-against average (0.42) and posted a 1.26 goals-againstaverage with a .788 save percentage and four shutouts in2008. Her 12 shutouts place her fifth in program historyentering her final season.

Senior Casey Les (Palmer, Mass.) and freshmanMaggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) will also look for timein net for Southern New Hampshire. Les saw her firstcollegiate action last season, working the final 10:08 ofthe regular season finale against Adelphi. Weldon comesto SNHU from Manchester West HS, where she garneredAll-State accolades as a senior.

The early schedule does SNHU no favors, as thePenmen open up with No. 19-ranked Bridgeport on August

28. Southern New Hampshireopens Northeast-10 playSeptember 2 at Le Moyne, thenfaces perennial power FranklinPierce on the road a week later.SNHU will take a trip to Georgiaon September 11 and 13 to faceout-of-region foes Tusculum andLincoln Memorial. Tusculumenters the season ranked No. 7nationally, while LMU was 11-6-1a year ago.

The Penmen have a pairof late-season tests as well, hosting 2008 Division IIsemifinalists Saint Rose onOctober 17. SNHU closes out itsregular season October 28 whenit hosts C.W. Post, which is No.25 in the Division II preseasonpoll. The Penmen snapped a 19-game unbeaten streak for the

Pioneers last season.“It doesn’t matter who you play, we need to focus

on are we ready, are we prepared for whoever we play? You want to play these tough teams, because you want toget beyond the first round (of the NE-10 Tournament) andmaybe get into an NCAA bid by playing some of thesetougher teams. I think that it’s going to be challenging, but I hope we’ll rise to the occasion,” concluded Prouty.

Since its modest beginning as the Northeast-7 in 1979,today the nation’s most comprehensive Division II conferencehas evolved into a membership committed to competitiveathletics programs that emphasize the education on and offthe field of its more than 5,500 student athletes.

Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused oncomplementing the academic integrity and missions of themember institutions with a commitment to a broad-basedchampionship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports theConference offers in championship play, the most such of anyDivision II conference.

The 16 member institutions are spread geographically fromSyracuse, New York to Boston, Massachusetts and Burlington,Vermont to Long Island, New York. Many of the members arelocated in or around the urban metropolitan areas of Albany,Boston, New Haven, Worcester and New York.

The Conference was proud to welcome the University ofNew Haven and Adelphi University in its latest expansion, thusadding to the powerful union of strong academic and athleticcolleges and universities.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regula-tions, the conference aims to encourage policies that enableintercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and beconsidered an integral part of the total educational offeringsat our member institutions.

The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of successincluding the growth from seven original member institutionsto more than double its size almost 30 years later, thecontention for and winning of numerous/multiple nationalchampionships, and the recognition of student-athlete perfor-mances off the field and in the classroom.

The NE-10 history began with the vision of a few good menand women. In 1979 a handful of athletic directors at smallerschools, classified NCAA Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities composed the idea ofa new athletic conference in New England. The visionariesincluded Al Shields at Bentley, Tom Folliard of Stonehill, LeonDrury of Bryant, and Andy Laska of Assumption. They soonconvinced Springfield Athletic Director Ed Steitz, GordieMcCullough of Hartford and Milt Piepul of American Interna-tional to join them in this new venture.

On October 9, 1979, a simple press release announcedthat a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed.Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club inSpringfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibil-ity and its athletics successes led to a slow but continuedexpansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselmin 1981 created the Northeast-8. In 1984, Merrimack joined andthen the “Northeast-10” was created upon Saint Michael’sadmission in 1987.

The conference membership remained consistent until1995 when charter member Springfield left for Division III. LeMoyne joined the league in 1996, Pace in 1998 and in 2001,Franklin Pierce, Southern New Hampshire University, theUniversity of Massachusetts Lowell, Southern ConnecticutState University and the College of Saint Rose.

LARKIN FIELD - HOME OF THE PENMEN

Southern New Hampshire University officially dedicated itssoccer field to former Vice President for Student Affairs Dr.George J. Larkin during a ceremony held April 23, 2004. The fieldwill now be referred to as "Dr. George J. Larkin Field." It waspreviously known as Penmen Field. Larkin, who served theuniversity for 38 years, retired at the conclusion of the 2003-04school year.

Current President Dr. Paul J. LeBlanc, President EmeritusDr. Richard Gustafson and SNHU Board of Trustee member AnnLally spoke on behalf of the university prior to the unveiling ofthe new signage, which is located at the entrance to the facility.

Richard Courtemanche, chairman of the Board of Trustees,Athletic Director Joseph "Chip" Polak, Associate AthleticDirector Ray Prouty and Pauline Larkin, his wife, also took partin the unveiling, which was well attended by the SNHU community,as well as, Larkin's family.

"I am honored to be a part of this celebration," saidGustafson, who worked closely with Larkin during his 16 years asPresident. "George Larkin has a rock solid core of values, andthat is why we admire him and honor him today."

"This is the highest honor we can bestow on an individual,"commented LeBlanc just prior to the unveiling. "Decades fromnow George Larkin's name will remain an important part of thisuniversity."

A reception followed the unveiling where Larkin waspresented with gifts to commemorate the day and his retirement. The Student Government Association presented him with a SNHUjersey with his name the number 38, in recognition of his years38 years of service. The Alumni Association enlarged and framedthe invitation used for the ceremony. The campus communitypresented Larkin with a framed painting by local artist SusanCallihan of Peterborough, that incudes three paintings depictingthe changing face of SNHU over the years.

"Prior to today the only signage on the field was one thatread Home of the Champions," said Polak before introducingLarkin during the reception. "That is very appropriate, becausenow the field is named for a man who is a true champion."

SNHU's men's and women's soccer and men's and women'slacrosse teams play their home games on the field, which is alsoused for numerous recreational and intramural activities.

Larkin has oversaw the athletic department from 1969 to2004 and served as Vice President for Student Affairs from 1983to 2004. SNHU developed into one the premier Division II athleticprograms in the nation under his guidance, claiming numerousEastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and NationalCollegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regional championships, and the 1989 NCAA National Championship in men’s soccer.

He was also instrumental in SNHU’s move from the now-defunct New England Collegiate Conference to the Northeast-10Conference, considered by many to be the premier Division IIleague in the country.

He also established a strict policy that every student-athletemust maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average in order tobe eligible to participate in a varsity sport at SNHU. This is higherthan the NCAA standard and is based on the fact that the entirestudent body at the University is required to earn a cumulativeGPA of 2.0 in order to graduate. This policy paid off in thesummer of 2001 when SNHU earned the inaugural USA Today/NCAAFoundation Academic Achievement Award in recognition of highgraduation rates among its student-athletes.

Larkin Field and the entire facility received a major faceliftduring the summer of 2003, and the facility now ranks as one thebest in the region.

Two days after the 2003 commencement was held on the fieldthe bulldozers arrived on campus and began the process ofreplacing the existing grass field with the state-of-the artFieldTurf surface. Viewed by many as the “ultimate all-weathersurface”, FieldTurf is a revolutionary sports surface thatprovides the perfect playing conditions all year long. It looks likegrass, feels like grass and plays like grass.

Additional improvements to the facility included newpermanent bleachers, a new scoreboard and a new “fully-wired”press box.

With over 600 installations in over 20 countries, FieldTurf iswidely considered to be the top producer of artificial grass. The

University of Michiganrecently selected FieldTurffor its legendary MichiganStadium, and over 20 NCAAuniversities have FieldTurf intheir stadiums.

U.S. Soccer, thegoverning body for soccer inthe United States, alsorecently selected FieldTurffor its Home Depot NationalTraining Center in Carson,Calf. St. John’s University, one of the top Division 1men’s soccer programs in thecountry, selected FieldTurffor its surface at BelsonStadium.
