Since joining the DSNI board, I have participated in the Resident Development Institute, educa-tion committee, and have been most active with the Kroc Center planning. I have chaired the DSNI/KROC Center Committee as well as the KROC Birth to 5 (formerly Child Care) commit-tee. As we anticipate breaking ground on this project this sum-mer, if re-elected, I look forward to working with our neighbors in reconvening and escalating the work of these committees. In addition, I am interested in work-ing on the strategic plan for the education committee, to ensure the best education for all of our community’s children. I love this community and continue to be committed to the on-going devel-opment of this neighborhood.

I have been a resident of this area for 33 years and I have seen a lot of issues and a lot of accomplish-ments. As a mother, a grand-mother and community outreach person, I feel that I am part of the soil that this community is made of. If I am elected I will do the best that I can do to move in a positive direction of help-ing families to fi nd a solution for whatever the issues may be in their community, and educate our youth on how to keep their community moving forward in a positive director for a better future.

I appreciate the changes that we have come through as a commu-nity. We have to continue making strives so that we can prepare for the future. Serving as a Board member of DSNI is an opportu-nity to help serve the community residents and to make this area a safe and thriving place. It’s also an opportunity to help facili-tate economic growth for all its residents, educational policies for all its children and a healthy environment for all its peoples.Ron Verna

I have been a resident of Rox-bury for 35 years and the Dudley neighborhood for 15. I am a product of the Boston Public Schools; as a single African American female I raised two sons, who also attended Boston Public Schools where I served on the parent council and school site council. I’ve served on the Vine St. Community Council and the DSNI Board. We are at risk of losing one of our most valuable resources – our children. We are losing them to street violence, substance abuse, mental and physical abuse, and most of all the lack of a quality education. If elected, I would focus on quality of life issues such as better schools, engaging our families, community jobs, training programs, and CORI re-form. It’s time for us as residents to look within ourselves and our community and bring forth some positive change to our commu-nity.

I have been a board member for more than 15 years and have been there over the years to help in defi ning the future of the Dudley Neighborhood. We have made some major improve-ment with new housing, formed a workforce development group to help residents get jobs when projects plant their seeds in our neighborhood. I also serve on the Kroc Center committee as I feel the Kroc Center is needed to service all generations in this neighborhood. A vote for me will assure you that I have your best interest in decision made for the Dudley neighborhood.

DSNI brings members of the community together, with a concentrated effort, to reach a common goal. I believe by your efforts we will continue to strive for a better Boston. I’ve lived and gone to school in this neighborhood for most of my life. I want to be re-elected to the Board because it opens up more opportunities for me to be involved and advocate for my community. I have helped fi ght for more teens jobs. I’ve done outreach for college trips, job fairs and have mobilized youth to sign up for the Hopeline. All my passion and the work I do in the community goes toward youth development. With DSNI’s support I can continue what I love to do and what I think is important.

Here we are two years later and I can truly say that I am not the same person I was when I was fi rst elected to the DSNI board. I have developed so much as an individual and as a member of the board. Being part of this collective has reaffi rmed to me the concept that there’s power in numbers and that it’s only when residents organize and empower themselves can they ensure positive change in their community. Participating in the Resident Development Institute (RDI) modules with residents from the community and fel-low board members has been a positive experience that has taught me DSNI’s core values in developing leaders and commu-nity organizing. The great thing about DSNI is that its vision is always growing and I want to still be a part of that process even if I’m not reelected. I would love the opportunity to serve on the board once more.

Ten years ago my wife and I began looking for a house in this neighborhood. I had been volunteering with the organi-zation for years prior and we specifi cally wanted to live within the DSNI boundaries. Since then, it has been my privilege to serve on this board for two terms. Through the last term, and the last year in particular we have embarked on a strategic planning process that will guide our way into the future. This is an exciting time in the history of DSNI: the anniversary of 25 years of work, and a transitional moment in which we are looking forward. I would love to have the honor of continuing to serve my friends and neighbors during this new chapter for our commu-nity. Thank you very much.

Muchas gracias.

My mission, as a potential DSNI board member, is to give back to the community that has given my family numerous opportunities. My main focus is to concentrate on the young children and teenagers with school. The fact is it wasn’t easy when I was in school and, watching my son now, it’s not getting any easier. We, together, as a strong community, need to be aware of how easy, as well as disheartening it is to lose a child to the streets, let alone a classroom. And that’s where we need to start. Hopefully the later generations will realize that we are here to help with school or life problems or by just listening so they do not fall by the wayside or through the proverbial cracks.

The difference between living in a neighborhood and living in a community is represented in the values upheld by DSNI. A neighborhood is a number of persons living in a particular locality. A community is differ-ent. The many different defi ni-tions of community all speak about having common goals and sharing responsibility. I want to be an active part of the Dudley Community. Although I have only lived in Dudley for 3 years I have seen a lot. I have witnessed the strength of our community marching and speaking out against violence. I have seen the challenges faced by our community as our local businesses suffer the economic crisis and many business and homes alike are forced to close. I truly believe in strength in numbers and equal representa-tion. I want to serve this com-munity and share the responsi-bility of shaping its future.

I feel that youth in our commu-nity should take responsibility for the change that is happening in Dudley and that they take part in all the great things DSNI has done and continues to do. This is why I am running for the DSNI board. I hope to repre-sent all the youth in the Dudley Community as DSNI continues to make an impact on the people and the community.

When I ran two years ago, my intention was to learn about the community I lived in, and how I could help better it. I hoped to understand the problems infl icted upon the citizens of the Dudley area and come up with systematic ways to eradicate them. I have learned though, that I, alone, cannot do this and must rely on the organiza-tion that is DSNI and all of the amazing, hardworking people within it. Therefore, I am run-ning again for the Youth board seat in hopes that I may use this new-found knowledge to work for this community, alongside

I would like the opportunity to advance my prior experience as a Dudley Youth Council member into this fi eld to apply my community outreach, public speaking and leadership skills. I would love to be a member of the DSNI Board because I’ve been in this community for some years felt like an outsider. Then I was introduced to DSNI which opened up my world to things going on in my com-munity. I’ve been involved in many things such as the Dudley Youth Council where I have worked on radio shows and the Boston Shines cleanups. I am also the current president of Youth on the Move in Roxbury. I would love to take on new responsibilities and be on the board of DSNI.

Sam Tavares

I believe that I am well suited for this position because I always try to get involved in situations where you make big decisions that affect your surroundings. It doesn’t take 50 years of experience to know what the neighborhood is like and how diffi cult the living situation is. I experienced a lot in my 17 years and I feel i can provide assistance to this board because I like to brainstorm ideas and create oppurtunity for progressive change. I have well developed leadership quali-ties being the captain of my wrestling team 3 years running, and i can only hope to build on that foundation as I continue to grow and improve along-side our neighborhood. If I am chosen to be a part of this I will accept my position and wisely process any actions we may encounter.

Project HopeSister Margaret Leonard

Executive Director

Project Hope has been an organizational partner with DSNI from its inception. We were engaged in the formulation of the DSNI’s mission – and believe deeply in it. The leader-ship of DSNI, its residents, and community partners have worked hard together to revital-ize our neighborhood. So much has been accomplished: ridding trash, building housing, creating parks and community centers and helping residents to dream and see the results of their dreams. There is still much to do particularly in these diffi cult fi nancial times. We have in the past and wish to continue to partner with DSNI, residents and community partners to ac-cess more affordable housing, to create opportunities for ongoing education, jobs that pay a liv-ing wage with benefi ts, quality child care for our children and so much more. I speak for myself and Project Hope when I say that we commit ourselves to continue to work with DSNI to write a new chapter for these times and witness new miracles

Children’s Services of Roxbury

Pamela OgletreePresident & CEO

Children’s Services of Rox-bury has offi ces and programs throughout the state, but are very much aware that we are headquartered in the heart of the DSNI community. We therefore feel strongly that our presence should be a resource to the DSNI community. We believe we currently add value by pro-viding early education and care to approximately 300 children 0-5 through our center and family-based network, many of whom live in the DSNI commu-nity. Beginning June 30th we will be a resource for families with youth experiencing serious emotional disturbances. We also add value by employ-ing a number of staff from the surrounding community. The DSNI community is a very rich and vibrant community and we would be grateful to have an op-portunity to be more involved in its continued development. We believe our mission to promote and strengthen family life and individual growth supports the mission of DSNI.

YouthBuild Boston has always admired the efforts of the DSNI to empower community resi-dents and serve as the guardian of vital resources in the Dudley neighborhood. YouthBuild looks forward to helping DSNI and area residents maintain the housing stock in this commu-nity. In addition we would like to serve / train young people interested in careers in the building trades. Our mission is connected to DSNI because we strive to equip residents with the tools to improve their lives and their community.

The Food ProjectMargaret WilliamsExecutive Director

The Food Project works to create a vibrant, healthy community in the DSNI neighborhood through urban farming and backyard kitchen gardens. Our 1.5 acre farms on West Cottage and Langdon Streets provides over 20,000 pounds of vegetables for local residents at our farm stand on Dudley Town Common. The food is sold at cost because we believe that residents deserve fresh, local produce at afford-able prices. Our Build a Garden program provides residents with backyard gardens and plants for local residents to produce their own food. This year, we hope to build 200 raised bed gardens for local residents, having the potential to provide food for 800 people.

Quincy Street Missional Church desires to be part of DSNI because our church people live in the DSNI community, benefi t from DSNI successes and want others who live in our neighbor-hood to so benefi t. Moreover, our church mission statement: to develop leaders within the Quincy Street community who passionately follow Christ and live out God’s mercy and justice for the poor, is very much in tune with the mission and purposes of DSNI. The church can at least partially carry out its own mission by being part of DSNI’s mission. Our church has been in DSNI only one year, so we would not claim to have contributed very much to DSNI yet. Our desire is to contribute more as time moves on. As far as what we think our church can contribute to make the neighbor-hood a better place, perhaps our church’s efforts to strengthen families as family units is a con-tribution a church such as QSt Church in particular can make.
