There are many significant accomplishments over the past year at Pitt Community College which have been important for our community. The long-awaited opening of a Student Center in January represents decades of planning to serve our students and community with a facility commensurate with the academic quality of our programs and faculty. Groundbreaking for the Herman Simon Health Sciences Building displayed the generosity of many individual and corporate donors to the College and a

true partnership of private and public resources. Our enrollment in both the credit and noncredit programs grew by double digits as unemployment and the impact of a major economic downturn motivated citizens of all ages and backgrounds to pursue training and education.

To respond to these opportunities and challenges, the faculty and staff of Pitt

Community College have performed at a remarkable level of excellence. This is why I have designated this as the “The Year of the Employee,” and you see in this Report so many examples of their accomplishments and the students and programs which they have supported. State budgets were reduced by over 10% as North Carolina experienced dramatic drops in revenues. A furlough reduction in pay was applied at the end of the year at a time when applications for financial aid were increasing by over

30% and overall enrollments continued to rise sharply. No sector in any other phase of education has seen such strong demand for services, but our people have remained dedicated to our mission of service and professionalism. As a result, Pitt Community College was recognized as one of only eleven “Exceptional” colleges by the NC Community College System in June.

It is with great pride that I welcome you to review these pages and invite you to continue to follow our progress as we respond to the needs of our region in the coming year, inaugurate a new facilities Master Plan, and begin the preparations for celebrating in 2011 fifty years of service to Pitt County and eastern North Carolina. We invite you to our campus and programs to see firsthand how we educate and empower people for success.

DARRELL ROBINSONBorn in Wilmington, Darrell Robinson is an attorney specializing in criminal, civil and personal injury litigation in the Washington, D.C., area. The first member of his family to attend college, he began his law education at PCC after recovering from a serious car accident in which he was given a 50-50 chance at survival.

Robinson spent 18 months taking Criminal Justice courses at Pitt before transferring to Barton College on an academic scholarship. He went on to graduate magna cum laude with a degree in Criminal Justice before earning a Juris Doctorate from N.C. Central University.

After excelling as an assistant public defender in Maryland, Robinson opened his own law firm in 2007. He has acquired many new clients, representing each of them with the same zeal he displayed while working with the Public Defenders Office.

PCC recognized Robinson as an Outstanding Alumnus in 2008. Upon receiving the award, he gave Pitt – particularly Paralegal Department Chair Lora Clark – much of the credit for his academic and career success.

In May, Robinson addressed PCC’s Class of 2009, telling them how he pursued and achieved his lifelong dream of becoming an attorney.

During his remarks, he said “hard work has its rewards” and that one small victory “can serve as a springboard to even greater things.”

“I concluded that although life had dealt me an unfair hand, I had made no effort to realize any of my dreams. I vowed then and there that if I lived, I would make an extensive effort to realize my dream.” – Attorney Darrell Robinson PCC Criminal Justice Graduate

2009. . .The Year of the Employee

Each year, the college presents an Innovation Award to a PCC employee who has designed and implemented a significant innovation that meets one or more of the following criteria: Quality, Efficiency, Cost Effectiveness, Timeliness, and/or Creativity.

This year’s Innovation Award was presented to Science Instructor Jeff Rorer for his “Teaching with Microsoft Producer” concept. Rorer utilizes Producer and PowerPoint as a mini production studio. This process allows him to combine media from many sources into a final production that is used as the lecture component of his class. He uses this method of instruction in both traditional and online classes.

Don King, an Adult General Education instructor/advisor, was named the 2009 Joseph E. Downing Excellence in Teaching Award recipient. A LaGrange native, King teaches orientation classes for

college freshmen and Health Careers classes for students getting started in health curricula. He said he felt honored and humbled simply being nominated for the Downing Award, adding that he was “surprised” to win it.

King was one of five Faculty Excellence winners along with Shannon Baker, Kelli Jones, Wanda Tenpenny and Rorer.

Pitt Community College celebrated its employees’ achievements April 17 during the school’s 26th Annual Employee

Appreciation and Recognition Evening at Rock Springs Center. During the program, the college recognized Faye Causey as

the Joan and Ed Warren Staff Employee of the Year for 2009. Causey, PCC’s Construction and Industrial Technology Division administrative assistant, was one of three Staff Excellence Award recipients this year along with Randy Allen and Faith Fagan.

Jenni Smith, the college’s Financial Aid and Registration Customer Service Representative, received the 2009 Student Development Services Award for Outstanding Customer Service.

Glenda Washington, Administrative Secretary for Health Care Services, was recognized by the Division of Continuing Education and Community Development as their 2009 Outstanding Employee.

The college also recognized recent retirees and presented service awards to employees who have been with the school for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years.

New to convocation this year was the presentation of the “Unsung Heroes Award,” which was created to recognize PCC employees whose substantive contributions to the college have gone largely unrecognized. Four PCC employees – Mary Lee Smart, Karen Lemoine, Teresa Thompson and Judith Kasperek – received plaques during convocation in recognition of their hard work and dedication to PCC. Plans are to continue the recognition of PCC’s unsung heroes throughout the year.

Pitt Community College instructor Rusty Sugg was honored by his peers in 2009 for dedication to student success in the respiratory care field. Sugg, 42, is director of clinical education for PCC’s Respiratory Therapy program. In September 2009, he attended the N.C. Society for Respiratory Care’s (NCSRC) annual conference in Winston-Salem and was presented with the 2009 Educator of the Year Award.

“I was very honored and privileged to be recognized with this prestigious award,” Sugg said. “I am very passionate about the education and success of future respiratory therapists.”

A lifelong resident of the Snow Hill area, Sugg graduated from PCC’s Respiratory Care Technology program in 1994. He began working at his alma mater in 2001 and currently teaches several respiratory therapy courses while also overseeing the program’s clinical classes. Sugg, who has earned bachelor’s degrees in Business Management and Human Resource Management from Mount Olive College, is a member of the Lambda Beta Society, a national honors organization for the respiratory care profession. He has also been nominated for Who’s Who Among American Teachers recognition.

NCSRC is a non-profit organization that supports and benefits respiratory care practitioners in North Carolina. The group is a chartered affiliate of the American Association for Respiratory Care.

Each March, PCC observes Women’s History Month with a special program celebrating the achievements of women. During the event, college administrators present the “Woman of Substance Award” to a female employee who has gone the extra mile in her work on campus and in the community. This year’s recipient was Leslie Rogers, Assistant Vice President of Student Services, who was honored for her many talents and for being a source of encouragement for students, faculty, and staff. Those who nominated Rogers for this year’s award cited her support for campus activities, “genuine care and concern” for others, punctuality, and time management skills. She also volunteers for United Way and Greenville Community Shelter and assists with the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce’s teen leadership program.

• The Pitt Community College Symphony Orchestra continues to delight audiences with four performances each year. The concerts are held at the Faith Assembly of God Church on Corey Road. The Orchestra is made up of curriculum students, continuing education students, and members of the community.

• During an event at Hope Middle School to celebrate their students’ success in a statewide writing competition, PCC and The Daily Reflector are praised for their 10-year partnership to bring the N.C. Press Association’s Newspapers in Education program to local classrooms.

Pitt Community College has been recognized as an exceptional institution by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS).

PCC was one of 11 community colleges in the state to earn “Exceptional Institutional Performance” status, which means the school met or exceeded all eight of the accountability standards measured in the report.

“We are indeed pleased that the high quality of Pitt’s classes and services is receiving this ‘exceptional’ rating,” PCC President G. Dennis Massey said. “This is a testimony to the excellence and hard work of our faculty and staff. The huge enrollment increases this year demonstrate strong satisfaction, but it is always positive to garner respect from the state and our peer colleges.”

Each year, NCCCS releases its Critical Success Factors Report to demonstrate how the state’s 58 community colleges performed in eight core areas during the previous academic year.

As one of the 11 community colleges to achieve “exceptional” status, PCC met or exceeded all eight system standards and produced students who transferred to four-year institutions and met or exceeded the performance level of native UNC System students. Pitt also attained at least a 70 percent passing rate for students who sat for licensure or certification exams for the first time.

“Attaining these standards is a matter of pride and achievement among our colleges, our faculty and our staff,” said NCCCS President R. Scott Ralls. “When the budget allows, we are able to provide performance based funding to the colleges based on the number of measures they meet or if they rise to the exceptional level. However, this year our colleges understand that there won’t be any additional dollars, only the satisfaction of achieving their mission of preparing students for their next step whether it’s college or work. With more than 200,000 full-time students and record enrollment growth, that’s a big accomplishment.”

PCC LOOKS TOWARD THE FUTURE

As a result of numerous surveys, focus group meetings and more than 200 interviews, PCC has a new facilities master plan in place that will outline growth at the school for the next 10 years.

Despite opening a new student center in March and renovating the Robert Lee Humber Building in 2006, PCC is still North Carolina’s most crowded community college. A record enrollment of 7,710 students this fall and better retention of students overall have only exacerbated the need for additional space.

In October 2009, PCC Trustees approved a plan by MBAJ Architecture that builds upon a facilities master plan administrators approved in 2004.

The newly-approved plan is to be carried out in six phases and calls for more than $60 million in renovations and new construction that will create 382,000 square feet of space.

In addition to the removal of several trailers on campus and renovations to select buildings, the first two phases of the 2009-2019 plan call for construction of new classroom and sciences buildings and a new child development center.

Phase III includes expansion of the Craig F. Goess Student Center to house the college’s bookstore, disability services program and student lounge as well as improvements to several existing facilities.

Highlighting the final three phases will be a 53,600-square-foot Design and Workforce Technology Center, an Alumni and Foundation Conference Center and two new 50,000-square-foot academic buildings to support projected enrollment growth.

According to PCC President Dennis Massey, “We’re maximizing opportunities we have, but we are eagerly anticipating more space, which is why the master plan is so important.”

HERMAN SIMON BUILDINGIn 2004, PCC administrators adopted a facilities master plan to serve as a guide for the college’s future growth. Included in the plan was a 34,000 square-foot addition to the William E. Fulford Building to provide the college’s health sciences programs with much-needed teaching space.

In January 2008, the PCC Foundation announced the addition would be named for ardent PCC supporter Herman Simon, a financial consultant with the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation. Simon was key in creating PCC’s VISIONS Career Development and Scholarship Program and the HORIZONS Program to help students make successful transitions into PCC curricula from high school and GED programs, respectively.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Simon Building took place in November 2008, and work on the project began earlier this

year. When it is completed next summer, the building will provide classrooms, labs and offices for health sciences curricula, general science classrooms and labs, and the VISIONS and HORIZONS programs.

Construction continues on the Herman Simon Building. The building is scheduled to be complete by next summer.

13

Page 15: 2008-2009 PCC Annual Report to the Community

The Pitt Community College Foundation develops relationships and resources for the college to provide an extra measure of excellence for its services. During 2008-2009, the PCC Foundation provided $675,000 for student scholarships, employee activities, educational programs, and campus construction projects.

The Foundation recognizes students’ achievements and provides support for many students who need financial assistance to pursue their career goals. Now more than ever, the PCC Foundation is implementing methods to ensure

donors that their contributions for PCC scholarships, educational activities, and capital projects are good investments. This annual report documents the results of those efforts.

During recent months, many investors have suffered significant losses in a changing economy. Some college foundations have been reporting that their endowments are “under water” and they may not be able to award those scholarships this year. The PCC Foundation’s scholarship endowments continued to grow due to conservative investment practices.

During the past year, the PCC Foundation funded over $170,000 in student scholarships and developed several new scholarship endowments. Increasing the number and the amount of scholarships that can be awarded to PCC students and increasing the number of endowed scholarships are constant goals of the PCC Foundation.

Generous contributions from individuals, alumni, businesses, and organizations in Eastern North Carolina have been essential to the success of Pitt Community College and the PCC Foundation. The College’s state budget provides resources to sustain only a basic level of operations. Contributors’

support helps provide the extra measure of excellence in programs, student support, and facilities.

In the past 12 months, donors’ support provided opportunities for the Foundation to assist with the construction of the Craig Goess Student Center and the Herman Simon Building, an expansion of the College’s health science facilities. The PCC Foundation successfully completed its first capital campaign with contributions, pledges, and grants totaling over $7.1 million to support campus construction and educational programs.

In 2008-2009, the PCC Foundation supported the college’s efforts to reconnect with the college’s 10,000+ alumni. The Foundation provided funding for activities and initiated an annual awards program to recognize outstanding and distinguished alumni.

Much of the PCC Foundation’s success can be attributed to the leadership and support of its board of directors, donors, and over 100 volunteers who support the foundation’s events and activities. We appreciate the work and support that each of these groups provide for our college.

Susan Q. Nobles Executive Director, PCC Foundation

THE PCC FOUNDATION

Motivated by the belief that money invested in Pitt Community College is an investment in Eastern North Carolina’s educational and economic future, the PCC Foundation launched the first capital campaign in college history in February 2008.

Led by a steering committee co-chaired by Walter Williams and Diane Murphrey, PCC’s Futures First Capital Campaign sought $8 million, primarily to fund construction of the Herman Simon Building, a 34,000 square foot-addition to the college’s health sciences facility. Campaign funds were also designated to support student scholarships, purchase new technology for classrooms, and support professional development for PCC employees.

By year’s end, the campaign generated nearly $7.1 million for the project despite a downturn in the nation’s economy.

LAUREN STARLINGWhile most of her South Central High School classmates were completing requirements for a high school diploma, Lauren Starling was also busy putting the finishing touches on a college degree. In addition to her normal high school courseload, Starling took college classes at PCC. As a result, she earned an associate degree in University Transfer around the same time she received her high school diploma.

Starling is well on her way toward becoming a second-grade teacher, something she has dreamed about since she was a little girl. The credits she earned through concurrent enrollment at PCC helped speed that process along by allowing her to enter East Carolina University this fall as a junior.

“(Concurrent enrollment) allows you to get a taste of what college classes are like before actually entering college full-time,”

says Starling. “It allows a person to learn how to be independent, school-wise. It helps a person plan effectively and efficiently. It also allows the student to get a jump start on college credit. ”

Though the additional coursework gave her a busier schedule than the average high school student, Starling found PCC advisors helpful, instructors very understanding, and she enjoyed the added responsibility that helped her develop time-management skills.

“I feel that when you are given an opportunity to learn and to grow, why not take advantage of it?” –Lauren Starling Former Concurrent Enrollment Student/PCC Graduate Future 2nd Grade Teacher
