As we close the 2017 Catholic Services Appeal for the year, I want to take this time to personally thank
all who supported the appeal. I know it must have been difficult at times, but again thank you for your
support.
The Diocesan assessment for Saint Bernard was $39,441 and as of January 7th Saint Bernard has met
that goal and collected $15,804 above the assessment that will stay in the parish of Saint Bernard and
be used for day-to-day operations.
Saint Francis assessment was $27,222. As of January 7th, Saint Francis has not met the goal set by
the diocese. We are under the amount by $2,391 which means that the parish has to make up the deficit out of its normal
operating expenses. Final amounts have to be in to the Diocese by January 16th.
In February, we begin the 2018 Catholic Services Appeal. The theme this year for the appeal is “United in Service”. As a
Diocese, let us offer to those who are in need, the services which no single parish can afford. The Catholic Services Appeal
offers us both an opportunity and a vehicle to demonstrate our love and concern for so many of our neighbors who need the
healing touch of God in their lives. Commitment Sunday for the new appeal will be on Sunday, February 11, 2018.
The Diocesan assessment for Saint Bernard in 2018 is $37,388 and the assessment for Saint Francis is $28,275. We are
hopeful that we will exceed our parish goal and have funds left over for use in each of the parishes.
Good Bless Fr. Ray

FAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFE
Jesus’ question in today’s gospel is still valid today: “What are you looking for?” What do you want from your spouse, children or parents? Families are populated with imperfect people. To expect perfection is unreal. To expect and accept imperfection is wisdom.
MARRIAGE MOMENTSMARRIAGE MOMENTSMARRIAGE MOMENTSMARRIAGE MOMENTS "Speak, for your servant is listening." (1 Samuel 3:18) A common complaint among couples is, "You're not listening to me." When is listening hard for you? If you're busy or tired, ask for a better time. Is there a conversa-tion you've been avoiding?

Human Life and Dignity
For the Church, there is no distinction between defending human life and promoting the dig-nity of the human person. Pope Benedict XVI writes in Caritas in Veritate . . . that "The Church forcefully maintains this link between life ethics and social ethics, fully aware that 'a society lacks solid founda-tions when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized.'" (no. 15).
As a gift from God, every human life is sacred
from conception to natural death.
As a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condi-tion. The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights that leads Catholics to actively work for a world of greater respect for human life and greater commit-ment to justice and peace. The bishops pledged to affirm the intrinsic value of human life and the dignity of every human being in a way that transforms the culture by implementing “The Life and Dignity of the Human Person” priority plan for 2010-2012.
To achieve this goal, the priority plan in-cludes ongoing education, prayer, policy, and advocacy efforts to mobilize the Catho-lic community on issues of life, justice, and peace. In this way, the Catholic community celebrates the gift of human life and wit-nesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ.
