The 1973 Javelina volleyball teamwas one of the first when thecurrent women’s intercollegiateprogram began in 1968-69.Members of the team were, left toright, front row, Linda Haug,Diamond Gonzalez, DelmaTrevino, Hope Ruiz and HopeElizaondo, and second row, JaniceGipson, Marsha Spree, JoyceTegeler, Ester Pena and coachBetty Brewer Ford. The womenwere members of the TexasAssociation of IntercollegiateAthletics for Women and thenational Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics for Womenbefore the NAIA, NCAA and LoneStar Conference started competi-tion for the women’s programs.Texas A&I was one of the pioneerschools in initiating a women’sintercollegiate athletic program.Ford was instrumental in thestarting of intercollegiate sportsprogram in the fall of 1968.

AS YOU READ about NCAA Division II lowering themaximum and minimum number of games and matches for 2020-21, these are for one year only.

The national association could return to the current number ofcontests in 2021-22.

HAVING BEEN A part of the Javelina athletic department for52 years, I often get asked what is the biggest moment during thisspan.

This is impossible to answer. There have been nationalchampionships, associating with players and coaches who areamong the best in the history of college sports and taking trips noother person not associated with the Javelinas has had theopportunity to make.

I thought it would be interesting to just jot down some of theplaces the Javelina teams have played in over this 52-year period.

Internationally, Paris, France; Berlin and Nuremberg, Germany;Vienna, Austria; Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico, and Burnaby,British Columbia, Canada.

And in the U.S., Honolulu, Hawaii (three times); Anchorage andFairbanks, Alaska; Seattle and Ellensburg, Wash.; Portland andMonmouth, Ore.; Los Angeles, Dominguez Hills, Marymount, SanBernardino, Long Beach, Stanislaus, San Luis Obispo, Sacramento,Davis, San Diego, Pomona, Chico, Malibu and Northridge, Calif.;Pocatello, Idaho; Reno, Nev.; Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff, Ariz.;Billings, Mont.; Denver, Durango, Fort Collins, Grand Junction andPueblo, Colo.; Fargo and Grand Fork, N.D.; Des Moines, Iowa;Wichita, Emporia, Pittsburg and Topeka, Kan.; Kearney, Neb.;Duluth, St. Cloud and Rochester, Minn.; Stevens Point and EauClaire, Wis.; Kansas City, St. Joseph, Maryville and Rolla, Mo.;Searcy, Arkadelphia, Texarkana, Magnolia and Fort Smith, Ark.;New Orleans, Lafayette, Thibodeaux, Shreveport, Natchitoches,Monroe and Lake Charles, La.; Hattiesburg, Cleveland and Clinton,Miss.; Montgomery, Troy, Jacksonville, Livingston and Florence,Ala.; Carrollton, Dahlonega and Valdosta, Ga.; Miami, Bradenton,Daytona Beach, Tavares, Port St. Lucie, Orlando and Lakeland,Fla.; Wilberforce, Ohio; Greenville, S.C.; Richmond, Va.; Bowie,Md.; Allendale, Mich.; Cary, N.C.; Boston, Mass., and New York,N.Y.

And there have been numerous sites in Oklahoma, New Mexicoand Texas for Lone Star Conference and non-league contests.

I’m sure I’ve missed a few but there probably isn’t anotherschool that has had teams play in as many international and nationalsites as have the Javelinas. And this is just in the past 52 years.

Since the first intercollegiate teams began play in 1925, theJavelinas have long had schedules that have had the Javelinas beingseen pretty much throughout the world…and gaining fans whohave never been on campus.

FORMER JAVELINA ATHLETIC director and head women’sbasketball coach Jill Willson is now with the NCAA and attendingDivision II championship events.

anxiety.Over a third of the respondents reported experiencing sleep

difficulties while more than a quarter reported feeling sadness and asense of loss. One of 10 reported feeling so depressed it has beendifficult to function “constantly” or “most every day”.

Seniors reported a sense of loss at 1.5 times the rate ofunderclassmen.

As a result of the pandemic, 99 percent of the respondents saidtheir coursework has shifted online.

Over 70 percent indicated feeling positive about their ability topass their spring courses, with a quarter feeling somewhat positiveor somewhat negative and less than five percent feeling negative.

Fifty-one percent indicated feeling positive about their ability tokeep up with classes.

Some of the athletes said they were struggling with onlineformat, some shared that faculty had increased their assignmentload as a result of moving online and others reported struggling toconnect with faculty, learning specialists or tutors when they hadquestions about course material.

Four out of five cited local regulations and a lack of access toappropriate facilities as barriers to their athletic training.

ATHLETES AREN’T THE only ones who are not enjoying thestoppage of athletic events.

Coaches, administrators, writers and fans also feel thatsomething big has been taken from their lives.

And as much as being distressed over having had athletics at astandstill for the past few months, is the uncertainty of when thesesports will return.

If you knew that this would all be over at the end of May, orend of June, etc., it wouldn’t be nearly as stressful. But there aredozens of theories as to when it will end, or at least be controlled.

I’ll never call any sport “boring” again! Right now, acompetitive croquet game between the Javelinas and Islanderssounds exciting!

JAVELINA ATHLETICS AND the University lost one of itsbiggest supporters with the passing of Harold Hees last week.

He and his wife, Joann, have been regulars at athletic eventsand university events through the years.

Harold played football for the Javelinas and was on the 1959national championship squad.

He will be greatly missed by Javelina Nation.

The planning for the 2020 fallNCAA championships is movingforward with the idea to preparefor adjustments in theseunpredictable times.

During the latest NCAASocial Series, Senior VicePresident of Championships JoniComstock, Division I CompetitionOversight Committee Chair LyndaTealer and Chief Medical OfficerBrian Hainline discussed howthey are leading preparations ascollege sports attempts to returnduring the COVID-29 pandemic.

However, alterations mayhave to occur due to local, state ornational health and safetymandates.

“Clearly, this is a newchallenge for us,” Comstock said.“We have been listening andcollaborating at a completelydifferent level with the sportscommittees.”

Sharing information from theNCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel, which is headed by Hainline, ispart of the process, so theindividual sports committees haveall the information to makedecisions should they have toalter any selection, seeding andbracketing procedures.

Infectious disease expertshave warned there could beanother spike of the COVID-19virus in late November orDecember. If that is the case, fallchampionships could be movedup to avoid championships beinginterrupted.

The membership is aware ofthe sense of loss student-athletesfelt with the cancellationsannounced in March of theremaining 2020 winter and springchampionships. Preliminaryconsideration is being given inhopes of avoiding that type ofscenario again.

“We are in early discussionsright now of looking at ‘Does itmake sense for us to move up theregular season and try toconclude fall championships on,around or before the week ofThanksgiving?’” Comstock said.

Planning For NCAA Fall Events Continues“If we can , and it makes sense, wecertainly would like to have acomplete experience for thestudent-athletes this fall.”

The Division I Council votedto allow football and basketballstudent-athletes to participate inon-campus voluntary athleticsactivities beginning June 1, aslong as all local, state and federalregulations are followed. TheCouncil voted to allow voluntaryathletics activities in all Division Isports beginning June 1.

“There is a lot of concern oncampus about getting this rightand doing things safely,” saidTealer, who is also the executiveassociate athletics director atFlorida. “We are equipped to dothat.”

If student-athletes are goingto begin workouts again, Tealerthinks campuses can provide thesafest atmosphere.

Schools can provide sanitizedfacilities and manage the numberof people who are working out at aspecific time. Temperature checksand other health screenings andtests could be made available.

Hainline added that medicaladvancements regarding testingfor the COVID-19 virus could helpenhance the return of college sports.

“Right now, the diagnostictest for the viral antigen can onlyhandle four or five tests at a time,”Hainline said. “But a newtechnology came out recently thatbumped that up to lose to 50. Ifthat can be perfected, and we canget batch testing to 100 or 500,that will be a game changer.”

Hainline also said there is anew point-of-care testing beingdeveloped that could be used insettings like a doctor’s office.Test results could be known infive ro 10 minutes. The first roundof this testing proved to bearound 80 percent accurate. If thetesting becomes more accurate, itwould make anotherbreakthrough.

Comstock, Tealer andHainline are optimistic about thefall championships, provided thereare no setbacks from the virus.

“We are trying to figure outthe way, and we think we can,”Hainline said.
