Thomas the Tank Engine Display

A magnificent Thomas the Tank Engine display was kindly shown by collectors Doug and Val Whiting in the Art Space from the 3rd -12th June. All the trains run on different size batteries. One blew steam one called ‗all aboard‘ and played music as it went around, others picked up freight from the train and deposited it on the station. Helicopters hovered over the tracks moving freight, a circus was transported, trains going through tunnels and over bridges and down mountains. The collection started 12 years ago when Val won a Thomas Tank Engine track in a competition. Their son Errol bought them another and that began the extensive collection. Some came as track sets, some trains were

bought as individuals at stores such as Toy World and K-Mart. The internet is a wonderful resource tool, watching what is out in England and waiting for them to arrive in Australia. Thomas the Tank Engine is a fictional steam locomotive created by the Rev. W. V. Awdry in his Railway Series books, made into the British children‘s series Thomas and Friends. The Rev. started telling stories to his son Christopher as he recovered, in isolation, from scarlet fever. Christopher demanded that he be told the stories again and again and, in the way of small children, corrected his father whenever inconsistencies crept into the retold stories. In self defense the Rev. Awdry wrote the first stories down on available scraps of paper.

Editorial The Telecentre will be closed from 12noon until 2.30pm Tuesday 23rd. I will be taking photos and having

lunch at the CWA Vietnamese luncheon.

As part of their Belt Up campaign, Roadwise are running a competition where you have the opportunity to

win $1,000 of fuel. If you have your competition slips from last weekends footy budgets then drop them in the box at the Telecentre. There are more competition slips available if you wish to double/treble/quadruple your chances.

A big thankyou to the people who have helped me on the paper while Suzanne is away.

No one has come forward to do the B Grade football notes. Do we have a potential scribe hiding out there in

a red and black jumper? Just need to know who‘s getting the awards etc as the OFA only send us what the League is up to.

The scanner is ready and waiting for any old

photos of Lake Grace for the 100 year Celebrations.

I'm sure you've watched the Olympic gymnastics at some point in your life, probably coming to the conclusion that gymnasts are those crazy athletes that do all sorts of flips and twists and stuff on beams, bars and rings. They‘ll be the ones that do flips at parties, can be frequently found upside down somewhere, can do handstands for minutes at a time, and quite generally are just plain awesome at what they do! However, what a lot of people don‘t realise, is that men‘s and women‘s gymnastics are two completely different forms of the same sport. Men‘s gymnastics, or MG, is an exhibition of extraordinary skill and absolute precision. The male gymnast competes on 6 apparatus, as compared to a female gymnast‘s 4 apparatus. The rings, parallel bars, pommel horse, and horizontal bar showcase the male gymnast‘s incredible upper body strength and absolute mastery of his body, whilst the floor and vault allow him to demonstrate his strength, power and coordination with tumbling skills, clear landings, and acrobatic manoeuvres. This year at Lake Grace, we have had a record number of 19 boys enroll, (not including kindergym), which has allowed us to run a session solely for our male gymnasts.

This is a huge achievement for our club - and a very exciting one, since we are now able to direct our coaching towards each gender‘s specific gymnastic requirements. With a focus on strength and conditioning, the improvement in upper body strength, flexibility, muscular and cardiovascular endurance should flow through to help our boys improve in all of the sports they play. The club‘s MG program is overseen by MG coach Wendy O‘Neill, and our other coaches Kate Zweck, Genni Curtin, Lisa Pearce and Diedre Trevenen.

To add to the story telling, the Rev. Awdry drew simple pictures of steam locomotives on the paper along with the stories. A face on view being the easiest to draw, he drew a row of locomotives standing in an engine shed with a human face and expression on each locomotive. In the series, the engines are prototypes from locomotives on the English rail system. Edward Gordon and Henry were in the first books published in 1945, the books were Edward's Day Out, Edward and Gordon, The Sad Story of Henry, and Edward, Gordon and Henry. They were The Railways Series1. Thomas didn‘t exist until The Railways Series 2 was published in 1946. After twenty six books, the Rev. Awdry laid down his pen, only to have it taken up by his son Christopher, who is now continuing to write stories for his son. Forty more books of the Railway Series have now appeared under Christopher's name.

The display of battery operated trains at the Art Space took a long time to set up and pack away. Doug has made special boxes to carry the trains and carriages.

People of all ages were fascinated by the diverse range of trains carriages and tracks on display. The older generation could remember reading the book or watching the TV series which started in 1984 and narrated by Ringo Star. Each train with its character, manoeuvred round the tracks for a two busy weeks.

The display will be at the Newdegate Field Day in September if you missed it in Lake Grace or just want to see it again.

It’s windy in Lake Grace - especially in October. So this year we’re going to make good use of it. October 2009 will be host to Art in Motion: driven by wind, a celebration of the amazing power of wind. So when that Albany doctor roars up in the evening, expect to see kites, flags, windsocks, spinners, streamers and more covering the town—ready to harness that cool breeze (or gale). Anyone can take part. Here’s just one idea...

MATERIALS

Scissors Pencil or marker Square of paper, cardboard or plastic etc (that holds its shape when bent) Wire or string An eyelet (or something similar to pin it with)

PROCESS Cut the square of paper on the four solid curved lines, as shown (the dotted lines are drawn from corner to corner just to help with the placement of the curves). Fold in the corners and fix together with an eyelet or something similar. Thread it (and many more) onto some string, wire or fishing line and wait for them to catch the breeze.

How to:

Cut each curved

line towards the

centre, but not all

the way to the

middle! Fasten with an eyelet—the old shoelace eyelets are good if you can get them.

With WA‘s list of threatened species now over 600 and rising, Auditor General Colin Murphy has found that recovery action is not happening for most, and few are improving. In his report tabled in Parliament today titled, Rich and Rare: Conservation of Threatened Species, Mr Murphy found that, in many areas, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is not providing effective protection and recovery to WA‘s threatened flora and fauna. ―Only a handful of threatened species are actually recovering, while the number of species on the list continues to grow,‖ Mr Murphy said. ―My office has found that only one in five threatened fauna, and fewer than half of threatened flora species have recovery plans, and those plans that are in place are often not fully implemented.‖ The report also found that DEC‘s $8.2 million threatened species program prioritises recovery plans and actions towards critically endangered species, leaving vulnerable and endangered species at increased risk of decline. The report found that multi-species approaches to conservation can be effective in dealing with the growing number of threatened species.

―DEC is undertaking a number of multi-species approaches. For example, the Western Shield program has improved the status of several native mammals,‖ ―DEC is also acquiring land to secure species habitat, but less than half the nationally agreed target has been reserved in WA.‖ The Auditor General‘s report found a number of other areas for improvement, particularly: DEC cannot demonstrate that all of its

threatened species conservation activities are effective.

DEC has not identified habitat critical to the survival of all threatened species.

State and Commonwealth threatened species lists are not aligned and 190 WA species do not receive protection from the Commonwealth Government.

―Increasing numbers of threatened species and the size of WA present a significant challenge for DEC,‖ Mr Murphy said. ―Achieving the right balance between programs which benefit large numbers of species at once, with those targeted at individual species‘ needs, will be critical.‖

Threatened Species Increasing With Few Improving

Forced Amalgamations Strongly opposed

Representation Shire already has 9 councillors Keep 9 councillors but don‘t have wards Don‘t allow changes which reduce ability for

ratepayers to be effectively represented Increase in geographical area and population

with same number of councillors - will representation be reduced?

Increasing size too much will reduce representation

Workload on councillors will become an issue – less people willing to take on the role

Very concerned at inference that council could become a ―Board of Directors‖

Employment Effects Shire a major employer Increased size of Shire will increase travel/

commute times for staff

Community of Interest / Social Fall Need to check who uses existing Shire facilities Boundary changes are timely and should be

considered Forced amalgamations are opposed - creates

grievances which take far too long to resolve Lake Grace is already well positioned and

should avoid being dumped upon Any changes should be based on existing

strengths (e.g. specified area rating) Avoid any changes which erode ―local identity‖

– for existing Shire and for any ―newcomers‖ Care needed to ensure that the willingness of

ratepayers to ―volunteer‖ and be self reliant is not lost

Regional Resource Sharing - Existing Efforts Need to be Acknowledged Already sharing resources and staff on a

regional basis Working regionally with Zero Waste and Tourism Voluntary Regional Organisation of Councils

with Dumbleyung and Kent Shires should be investigated

A good opportunity to explore potential Shire boundary changes

Specified Area Rating Farsighted initiative Highly successful and strongly supported Its retention must be a condition of any

changes

Local Government Structural Reform Process

C O M M U N I T Y U P D AT E T H E B A C K G R O U N D In February 2009, the John Castrilli, MLA, Minister for Local Government, announced a package of wide-ranging Local Government reform strategies. He invited each Local Government to engage in structural reform and look at the issues of boundary changes, amalgamation, shared

regional services and a review of the number of elected representatives (councillors).

Community consultation sessions about Stage One of the Local Government Structural Reform Process were held in Newdegate and Lake Grace on Thursday, June 4th. Consultant Tony Cooke, who

is assisting Council in the process, facilitated and led the group discussions.

Both meetings were well attended given the unfortunate but necessary fact that these first round meetings were held mid-seeding. This was due to the 30 August 2009 timeline set by the Minister for

the completion of community consultation and preparation of submissions.

A wide range of issues was raised and discussed at length during the meetings. The general feel of the meetings in regard to the future for the Shire was a positive one. Following is a summary of the ‗issues‘

and the ‘questions‘ raised by those who attended the meetings:

in the west. On Saturday 27th Saturn sets at 10:43pm and is north of the 34% Moon on Sunday 28th at 10pm. Saturn on Friday 3rd of July sets at 10:21pm.

URANUS the blue/green coloured gas planet at magnitude +5.8 in Pisces rises in the east at 11:57pm on Saturday 20th. On Saturday 27th Uranus rises at 11:26pm and on the 3rd July at 11:03pm in the east.

NEPTUNE the grey/green coloured gas planet at magnitude +7.8 in Capricornus rises on Saturday 20th at 9;32pm in the east/south/east. On Saturday 27th Neptune rises at 9:04pm and on 3rd July at8:40pm. The Southern Cross will be direct south at 6:55pm on Saturday 20th and in front of the constellation of Musca the fly. In the north/north/west is Leo which is west of Virgo almost north. Coming south of them is the constellation of Corvus the crow. To the north/north/east is the orange star Arcturus which is the brightest star in Bootes the herdsman. To the east of Arcturus is the half ring of stars of Corona Borealis the Northern Crown. In the east south east is the Constellation of Scorpius with the Constellation of Libra in front. The brightest star in Scorpius is the red supergiant Antares at 604 light years distant and has a blue dwarf double at magnitude +5.4 with Antares at 1.2. The dwarf double sparkles with a green tinge.

Antares is the heart of the scorpion. The brightest star in the tail of the scorpion is called Shaula, and is a blue subgiant star at 702 light years distant and shines at magnitude +1.62.

The Moon this fortnight in the night sky with illumination and constellation is in Gemini at 2% on Wednesday 24th, Cancer on Thursday 25th at 7% and on Friday 26th at 15%, Leo on Saturday 27th at 24% and Sunday 28th at 34%, on Monday 29th in Virgo at 45%, Tuesday 30th at 56%, Wednesday 1st July at 66% and Thursday 2nd at 75% and Friday 3rd at 83% in Libra. With the Moon in the night sky, it’s now a good time to get out your binoculars and telescope to view it. Every night there is a different view of the craters and mountains as the sunlight filters through the craggy edges. Looking through the telescope everything is upside down, so that the South Pole is the very badly cratered part of the Moon on top. There are also three craters in a straight line and other craters inside larger ones. Remember that old telescope you or somebody else bought and has not seen the light for years, get it out and you will be surprised at what you're missing and you are not the only one.

Some highlights coming up is the Earth at Aphelion on Saturday (furthest from the Sun),Saturday 4th July, August 11th the Sun passes through Saturn’s ring plane, August 19th, Mercury in Conjunction with Saturn, September 4th, Earth passes through Saturn’s ring plane, and in October 8th Mercury is in conjunction with Saturn again and on October 14th, Venus is in conjunction (close) with Saturn.

Ring for information at anytime day or night and especially if you view an unknown object in the sky. Viewing at my house is free of charge.

The University of Western Australia has become a member of the first international network of the world‘s leading hearing implant centres – one of only two members in Australia.

‗HEARRING‘, the International Network of Comprehensive Hearing Implant Centres, boasts 17 university-affiliated clinics in 15 countries on five continents. The network‘s aims include raising awareness for hearing disorders, attaining the highest standards of scientific research; providing the best implantable devices for the hearing impaired; and delivering excellent patient care from the first consultation to post-surgery and rehabilitation.

UWA‘s Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Unit, currently based at Fremantle Hospital, was represented at the Warsaw launch of ‗HEARRING‘ by its Group Leader, Professor Gunesh Rajan.

―Members of our Unit and its collaborators have played a pioneering role in Australia, establishing one of the most comprehensive hearing implant programs worldwide,‖ Professor Rajan said. ―We embrace cutting-edge developments in cochlear

implantation for complete, partial and single-sided deafness and we have introduced the latest middle ear implant applications to Australia. The comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach is vital to achieve our goal of providing a hearing solution for anyone with a hearing problem. The International HEARRING network is the logical next step to address these hearing disorders at a global level.

―Focusing on implant and hearing restoration research, we have additional outreach with the Hearing Implant Team of Princess Margaret Hospital working closely with the Unit. We have members from all WA teaching hospitals, thus ensuring wide representation of otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons and affiliated health sciences.

―Various specialties are represented in the Unit, such as neurosurgery, neuroradiology, audiology, balance physiotherapy and speech pathology, enabling a comprehensive management of hearing and balance disorders,‖ Professor Rajan said.

SCIENCE AND STUFF WHY FEAR MAKES SOME THINGS CLEAR: Fear changes how we see things, enhancing our ability to identify blurry shapes but impairing our perception of fine details. This may help us to escape threats. Looking at a fearful face, which activates the brain in a similar way to feeling fear, enhances sensitivity to visual contrast, but whether it improves vision across the board wasn’t clear. So Bruno Bocanegra and Rene Zeelenberg at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, showed people pictures of faces with either, fearful or neutral expressions, followed by a “blob” covered in stripes of varying thicknesses. Those shown a fearful face were better at identifying whether thick stripes were vertical or slightly tilted and worse at identifying the orientation of thin stripes than those shown neutral faces (Psychological Science, DOI: 10.1111/j.1467-9280.2009.02354.x). This response may have evolved because course-grained features, which enable you to evaluate movement and distance, better aid survival in scary situations than fine details. “You don’t care whether the object has wrinkles, you care whether its movement is threatening,” Bocanegra says. MAYAN CIVILLISATION WRUNG DRY: The builders of the ancient Mayan temples at Tikal in Guatemala switched to inferior wood a few decades before they suddenly abandoned the city in the 9th century AD. The shift is the strongest evidence yet that Mayan civilisation collapsed because they ran out of resources, rather than, say, disease or warfare. Researchers led by David Lentz, a palaeothnobotanist from the University of Cincinnati Ohio, sampled wooden beams and lintels from all six major temples and two palaces within the ancient city of Tikal. The first three temples, built before AD 741, used only large, straight logs of the Sapodilla tree – a particularly strong wood that is nevertheless easy to carve with ceremonial inscriptions. But after that date, large sapodilla logs were almost entirely replaced in temple construction by logwood, a smaller, gnarly tree that is almost impossible to carve. ”It’s definitely an inferior material,” says Lentz, who reasons that the temple-builders would only have accepted logwood if they had run out of suitable sapodilla trees to harvest (Journal of Archaeological Science). Earlier studies of pollen deposits have suggested that deforestation and soil erosion were increasing in the region as Mayan civilisation neared collapse. But the temple timbers of Tikal are the first to show that ecological overexploitation directly affected Mayan culture. OCEAN’S CRUST HUMS A STORM WARNING: Listening to Earth’s hum could reveal a record of worsening storms due to climate change. Ocean waves thumping on the crust create both a “hum” and tiny earthquakes called “microseisms,” which show up in seismological data. Big waves generate a higher amplitude than small waves. If coastal storms have got worse, the telltale signs should be there in the seismic history, argues Peter Bromirski of the

Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, in a commentary in Science (vol 324, p 1026). It would also hint at changes in coastal erosion. Many seismograms have been recording for nearly a century, generating a “treasure trove” of archived paper drums. “The calibrated seismometer records go back further than good wave measuring systems,” says Spahr Webb of Columbia University’s Earth Institute in New York. LOVE OF HONEY DRIVES TOOL USE IN CHIMPANZEES: If You’re impressed that chimps can use tools to hunt or crack nuts, wait till you hear what they do when foraging for honey. Not only do they construct several different tools for the purpose, but they use them sequentially – an achievement approaching the abilities of early Stone Age humans. A team led by Christophe Boesch of the Max Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, studied chimps living in Loango National Park in Gabon. They found that the chimps built and used five different types of tools to help them find beehives and extract honey: thin, straight sticks to probe the ground for buried nests; thick blunt-ended pounders to break open beehive entrances; thinner lever-like enlargers to break down walls within the hive; collectors with frayed ends to dip honey from the opened hive and bark spoons to dip it out. Various tools were often found near the same hive, suggesting that the chimps employ them in sequence (Journal of Human Evolution 2009). A few tools even appeared to have two uses, with enlargers at one end and collectors at the other. This is the first example of a non-human species constructing multipurpose tools. Some of the tools would require several steps to make, so making and using the entire toolkit implies an impressive ability to plan ahead, compared with, say cracking a nut with a stone. Probing for underground hives also requires the chimps to conceive of the existence of unseen objects. The mental skills needed for this and the tasks that follow rival those displayed by humans in the early stone age, says Boesch, indeed, he believes the desire to successfully obtain honey could have been one of the pressures that favoured increased intelligence as humans evolved. HISTORIC AXE RE-FOUND: Archaeologists have unearthed a 400,000-year-old flint hand axe that went missing in the Natural History Museum, London, 150 years ago. It was originally found in a French quarry and displayed at the Royal Society in 1859, destroying creationists’ claim that the world was only 10,000 years old. REPTILES IN RETREAT: Habitat destruction threatens the survival of a fifth of Europe’s 151 reptile species and a quarter of its 85 amphibians, according to a survey for the European Commission. Of the reptile species, six are so critically endangered that they face imminent extinction, as do two amphibians. Maurice Gilson.

On Thursday the 11th of June the year 5‘s left Lake Grace to go to Perth for a school camp. We stayed in Perth for one night. At 9am we waved goodbye to our parents ready for the long bus journey to Perth. We stopped at Pingelly for a toilet break and then continued our travels until arriving at the Perth Observatory at about 12:30pm. Here we had lunch and then commenced our tour which involved looking at a real meteorite, a solar system walk and looking at some amazing telescopes. To see one of them we had to climb a huge flight of stairs. After leaving the observatory the bus headed for Scitech. When we arrived we were all very keen to get into the shop, where we spent about an hour. Then free time to explore the many exhibits. Most of us were so excited that we just ran from one to the other forgetting to read the instructions then wondering why we didn‘t know what to do. After our free time some pre-dinner slime was made which was gross but cool. For dinner pizza was on the menu which was enjoyed by all, then it was back to some more free time. Finally it was time for the Flour, Fuel and Farts show where we all swore never to fart in the bath again. Emma couldn‘t get her hand out of a cake tin full of slime, Jack made some bubbles that overflowed and Marcia showed us what happens when we wash our dirty clothes. We then went to the CSIRO lab session where we made different types of circuits with lights and switches. All were amazed to be able to hear the radio on one of the circuits we made.

When the lab session was finished some milo and biscuits were shared. After supper and getting into our pyjamas we went to the digital studio to make some interesting music on CD, which we are now expecting in the mail. By the time we finished mixing our beats it was 10:30pm and time for bed. We eventually settled down and tried to sleep which was really hard because people kept moving and Mr Boyland was snoring. Finally we were all fast asleep when the cleaners came and turned all the lights on at 4am. It was a struggle to get them to understand we were trying to sleep and eventually they were turned off at 5am. We only had about another hour until we had to wake up. We dressed and had some breakfast. We had a bit more free time and then, had to say goodbye. After packing the bus we headed off to Synergy park. We all couldn‘t wait to get to the playgrounds, where we climbed a dragon‘s back, had photos under the rocks and kicked balls around which ended up in the water. On the way home we went to Armadale for lunch where the choices were Hungry Jacks or KFC. Then on the road for home. The bus was much quieter than on the way there and some of us even falling asleep. We arrived back in Lake Grace at 3:00pm and had to ring our mums because we were a bit earlier than expected. Overall it was a great experience and all of us had fun. Thanks to Mr Boyland for driving the bus.

Humour Rabbits vs. Wolves Two rabbits were being chased by a pack of hungry wolves. The wolves chased the rabbits into a thicket. After a few minutes, one rabbit turned to the other and said, "Well, do you want to make a run for it, or should we stay here for a few days and out number them?" Football Pool Grandma was nearly ninety years of age when she won 1,000,000 pounds on the football pools. Her family were extremely worried about her heart and feared that news of her large win would come as too much of a shock for her. 'Think we had better call in the doctor to tell her the news,' suggested the eldest son. The doctor soon arrived and the situation was explained to him. 'Now, you don't have to worry about anything,' said the doctor. 'I am fully trained in such delicate matters and I feel sure I can break this news to her gently. I assure you, there is absolutely no need for you to fear for her health. Everything will be quite safe if left to me.' The doctor went in to see the old lady and gradually brought the conversation around to football pools. 'Tell me,' said the doctor, 'what would you do if you had

a large win on the pools - say one million pounds?' 'Why,' replied the old lady, 'I'd give half of it to you, of course.' The doctor fell down dead with shock. Jury Duty A man was chosen for jury duty who very much wanted to be dismissed from serving. He tried every excuse he could think of but none of them worked. On the day of the trial he decided to give it one more shot. As the trial was about to begin he asked if he could approach the bench. "Your Honor," he said, "I must be excused from this trial because I am prejudiced against the defendant. I took one look at the man in the blue suit with those beady eyes and that dishonest face and I said, 'He's a crook! He's guilty, guilty, guilty.' So your Honor, I could not possibly stay on this jury!" With a tired annoyance the judge replied, "Get back in the jury box. That man is his lawyer." The Momentous Question For months Bill had been Lynn's devoted admirer. At long last he had collected sufficient courage to ask her the momentous question. "There are quite a lot of advantages to being a bachelor," Bill began,

"but there comes a time when one longs for the companionship of another being, a being who will regard one as perfect, as an idol; whom one can treat as one's absolute own; who will be kind and faithful when times are hard; who will share one's joys and sorrows." To his delight, Bill saw a sympathetic gleam in Lynn's eyes. Then she nodded in agreement, "I think it's a wonderful idea! Can I help you pick out a puppy?" The Speeder A traffic cop on patrol one night, watching a 35mph zone on the edge of town, suddenly saw a car come blazing by his hideout. Quickly grabbing at his radar gun, he clocked the fast moving vehicle at 87mph! The officer took off after the speeder and soon had the car pulled over on the side of the road. Expecting trouble with such a reckless driver, the patrolman approached cautiously. To his surprise the driver of the offending vehicle was a little old lady, barely tall enough to see over the steering wheel. ―Ma‘am,‖ the officer began. ―Do you know how fast you were going?‖ ―I was just getting her up around 90, I believe, officer,‖

the old lady answered calmly, peering up at him through her bifocals. ―Why, what seems to be the problem?‖ Shocked, the officer returned her comment, ―What seems to be the problem? Why, this is a 35mph zone! That‘s the problem. Didn‘t you see the sign?‖ ―Oh sure,‖ the old lady returned, ―That‘s why I‘m driving so fast. I‘m just trying to follow it‘s instruction.‖ Dumbfounded, the officer was momentarily speechless. ―Just what sign are you talking about, Ma‘am?‖ he asked, when he finally recovered. Smiling up at the officer, the old lady placed a gentle hand on his wrist and said, ―Why, the one that said ‗Speed Zone Ahead‘, of course!‖ Sick Aunt Finally, the good-natured boss was compelled to call Smith into his office. ―It has not escaped my attention,‖ he pointed out, ‖that every time there‘s a home-game at the stadium, you have to take your aunt to the doctor.‖ ―You‘re right, sir,‖ exclaimed Smith. ―I didn't realize it. You don‘t suppose she‘s faking , do you ?‖

Western Australians will no longer need registration stickers and discs on their cars, trailers and motorcycles from January 1, 2010. On Sunday, 10 May 2009, Premier Colin Barnett and Transport Minister Simon O‘Brien announced that registration stickers and discs will be phased out from 1 January 2010. This decision was made because: The Government will save at least two

million dollars in printing and postage costs over four years

WA police now have the technology to check a vehicle's licence status without the need to refer to the registration sticker

The use of technology renders the rego sticker obsolete and owners will no longer have to struggle to scrape off the sticker

The legislative changes to the Road Traffic Act 1974 will occur over the coming months. Until this occurs, all vehicle owners will continue to be issued with a registration sticker or disc upon payment of the licence renewal.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Q. How will I know when my licence is due to

expire?

A. The Department for Planning and Infrastructure will continue to send renewal notices to vehicle owners six weeks before the licence expires.

Q. How will I prove my vehicle is licensed?

A. It is recommended that the renewal notice, which is sent 6 weeks prior to the expiry date, be kept for future reference particularly for when you sell the vehicle.

Q. How will the police know my vehicle is

currently licensed?

A. The WA Police have Automatic Numberplate Recognition Cameras, in addition to the new TADIS computer system available in their police vehicles and in hand-held units for police on the beat. This system enables the instantaneous retrieval of the current licence information of the vehicle.

Q. If I travel interstate, how will local police

know my vehicle/trailer/caravan is licensed?

A. Police in other jurisdictions are able to check your vehicle licence via the National Exchange of

Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS).

Q. Will motorcycles, light trailers and caravans still require a registration disc from

1 January 2010?

A. Motorcycles will not be issued with a registration disc after 1 January 2010. This also applies to any caravans or trailers with a gross vehicle mass less than 4.5 tonnes.

Q. What about trucks/heavy vehicles?

A. Heavy vehicles (all vehicles with a gross vehicle mass more than 4.5 tonnes) will still be required to display a heavy vehicle registration sticker, as it is part of the National charging and enforcement regime.

The heavy vehicle sticker shows the vehicle configuration, make and body type, vehicle identification number, gross vehicle mass, gross combination mass, manufacturer‘s gross combination mass and any conditions that apply, whereas light vehicles stickers show just the month and year of licence expiry.

Registration Stickers a Thing of The Past

Nuisance Barking Dogs

All dogs bark but some barking dogs become a nuisance. Excessive barking is one of the most

disruptive neighbourhood issues and requires immediate attention.

Why do dogs bark?

Try to determine why your dog is barking. Dogs may bark because they are:

Hungry, thirsty, cold, hot, in need of exercise, or perhaps sick or injured

Bored

Seeking attention

Threatened or protecting their territory

Check to see if your dog: Has access to clean fresh water and adequate shelter

Has daily exercise and is not sick or injured

Is provided with marrow/brisket bones to chew several times a week.

Living near a dog that barks excessively – what can neighbours do?

Dog owners are often not aware of their own dog‟s excessive barking.

Firstly, the owner should be approached directly and have the problem explained to them. A

tape recording of the dog barking may help to substantiate any complaint.

Secondly, if your neighbour is unapproachable or does not agree that the problem exists, then

a complaint should be made to the Rangers at your local government.

Rangers can help with barking problems so that you do not have to suffer the nuisance caused

by dogs that make too much noise.

Boredom

Excessive barking is more common with some breeds than others. Some breeds – such as cattle

dogs, kelpies, border collies and German shepherds – were originally bred to work on farms

and may have problems adjusting to a suburban backyard. You should carefully select a

breed that is suitable for your lifestyle. Long walks on a lead may not be enough to keep some

dogs occupied. They may become barkers through boredom and frustration.

Pingrup / Lake grace junior hockey V‘s Ongerup June 6th With Anna Hunt in perfect wing position early in the first term she narrowly missed and early opportunity. It‘s great to see the younger team members not being afraid to get their stick in. We had a lot of the attacking play, though thanks to a tough opposition backline only managed the one goal. Well done Liam who succeeded. Well done to Brook Marsh and Emma Naisbitt who managed to cleanly stop a number of balls on a rough surface. Kathleen played another fantastic game and never gave up. Ongerup grabbed the opportunity to even the game score by making use of their wings late in the second half. Final score 1-1 Goal scorer: Liam Baker 1

Final results from the Daylight Saving Referendum have been announced, with WA Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately today returning the referendum writ to the Governor. In the referendum, overall 1,144,203 valid votes were cast, with 519,899 (45.44%) electors voting ―Yes‖ and 624,305 (54.56%) voting ―No‖ – on a turnout of 85.64% of the State‘s 1,341,554 enrolled electors. Informal votes totalled only 4,650 (0.40% of all votes), the lowest-ever recorded level of informality for WA daylight saving referenda and almost half the number of informal votes cast in 1992. The primary reason for informality was illegibility (where the elector had chosen to scribble on the ballot paper) totalling 1540 ballots; followed by 1188 blank ballots, 1112 ballots where the elector‘s intention was unclear, and 810 for a variety of other reasons – only 199 of these ballot papers were rejected because the elector marked the box with a cross. Commenting today Mr Gately expressed his satisfaction with the turnout: ―Given that traditionally voter turnout in a stand-alone referendum is low, the final figure of 85% is a pleasing result, comparing favourably with the 88% turnout at the recent State general election and the 86% at the last daylight saving referendum,‖ he said.

―The low level of informal votes is also encouraging, suggesting the Commission had effectively communicated to the public its messages in regard to correctly completing the ballot paper. ―I note too that the ‗ticks and crosses‘ distraction proved to be a non-issue with only 199 ballot papers from across the State rejected for this reason.‖ The overall breakdown of votes shows that there were 885,849 votes cast on referendum day, 36,939 postal votes, 68,723 early in-person votes, 148,111 absent votes, 765 provisional votes and 8,466 votes at special institutions and hospitals.

I‘m a couple of weeks behind in the golf notes so in order to catch up I will keep these notes short and sweet. On the 24th of May we had our first stroke round of the year sponsored by the President Craig Reeves (Reevo). The Men‘s comp was won convincingly by Chris Carruthers with a Nett score 68 – a few years off hasn‘t hurt his golf at all! Allan ‗Stubby‘ Stubberfield continued his good form this year to get 2nd place on a count back from Murray Stanton – both had Nett scores of 75. In the ladies event it was a very close competition with Lisa Pearce narrowly beating Stephanie Lay on a countback - both ladies finished with excellent Nett scores of 71. Craig Reeves also sponsored some extra novelties on the day – these were won by Gary ‗Frisky‘ Frost (Best 2nd No 2), Chris Carruthers (Best 3rd No 5), Helen Hunt (Ladies LD on 8), Frisky (Best 2nd No 10), Tania Bray (Longest Putt 14) and Marcus Owen (Men‘s LD on 17). Weekly Novelties were won by JP? (NTP 4), Renae O‘Halloran (NTP 6), Reevo (NTP 15), Frisky (NTP 18), Helen (LP 9) and Stubby (Placement 12). The following week was a Par Event sponsored by Spencer Wools – thanks to Darren and Tania Spencer for their sponsorship. The day produced 2 major highlights – Merv ‗The Lochness Monster‘ Spurr who turned up for his first round of golf ever with some sparkling new sticks (had a very good game as well beating some regular golfers!) and Michelle who came within a couple of inches of winning $500 for a hole in one of the par 3 18th (incidentally the hole in one is sponsored by Summit Fertilizers – thanks to Athol Kennedy and Summit for their continued sponsorship). On the golf side of things it was me who came away with a win with a +7 (managed to do this on the first 9 holes – shame about the other 9!) closely followed by Corey ―no gimmes‖ Lee on a +5. In the Ladies, Michelle capped off a good day to win the ladies with +4 with Stephanie Lay filling the runners up spot. Weekly Novelties were won by Stubby (NTP 4), Reevo (NTP 6), Merv! (NTP 15), Michelle (NTP 18), R. Stubby (LP 9) and Murray (Placement 12). On the 7th of June, Jason Willcocks played his

annual game of golf – the SBM Tyres sponsored Foursomes. A good day was had by all with the help of Jason‘s and Penny‘s generous sponsorship. At the end of the day it was Gary Frost and Marcus Owen who came out on top with a Nett score of 67 with Derek Stanton and the man in form (Stubby) only 1 shot further back. We won‘t mention who ended up with the NAGA! Jason and Penny also sponsored a few extra

novelties on course with the winners being Marcus / Frosty (Best 2nd No 2), Marcus / Frosty (Best 3rd No 5), Hunty and Eggs (Best 3rd No 13) and myself and Crooky came up with the best 2nd on number 10 – goes to show even the NAGA winners can come away with a prize. Weekly Novelties were won by Helen / Michelle (NTP 4), Frisky (NTP 6), Rex (NTP 15), Jason (NTP 18), Eggs (LP 9) and Jason (Placement 12). Last Sunday it was the coveted ―Men‘s Sheep Day‖ sponsored by Murray Stanton and Kingsley Strevett – a popular day on the golfing calendar. The day is an Aggregate Stableford with the partners drawn out of a hat at the end of the day‘s play – whilst you might have a good day individually it doesn‘t necessarily mean you will win the main prize. On the other hand you may have an ordinary day but still come up Trumps – just ask Frisky! As you can probably guess Frisky managed to draw a good partner in Corey Lee resulting in a Nett score of 70 (Corey managed to get 42 of these) and they came home with the sheep. Second place went to Stubby and Eggs (Stubby continues his amazing form with a Stableford score of 40) and 3rd went to Chad and I. Special mention to Crooky who did well individually with a 38 but unfortunately did not fare as well in the draw. The Ladies had a Individual Stableford sponsored by Karissa at Lake Way Hair Salon – Helen and Steph both had an exceptional day returning with 41 points. However in the count back it was Helen who narrowly came out on top with 22 points on the back 9 compared to Steph‘s 21. Michelle also had a good day with 37 points and it was good to see the Ladies Captain back on the course. Weekly Novelties were won by Nick (NTP 15 – got the birdy as well!), Milty (Placement 12 – unfair advantage with his golf cart!) and Crooky (LP 9). Helen cleaned up the rest of the novelties winning the NTP4, NTP6 and Nearest the Pin 18. Many thanks to Westpac, Bankwest, Lake Grace Hotel, Rosie‘s Café, CSBP and Tyrepower who are the sponsors of the weekly novelties. Next week we have a Stroke Event sponsored by CCL Hardware followed by the Lake Grace Open Day which will be held on Saturday the 27th of June – please call myself if you require any details.

Finally some long awaited rain to make our course change from a brown colour to a nice green colour and all in the space of a week. The last couple of weeks have been well attended with our new players improving week by week and none more so than Ben Weaver who has come a long way in a short space of time to take out the coaches award. Another with a great swing and coming a long very nicely is Bianca Kennedy who won the stroke competition. Brendan Bell was also prominent in winning the chipping and putting comp. He took out the Rhynie award as well. Last weeks winners were Reece Lay and Travis Hutter in the 4BBB competition on a countback from Brendan and Ben. The coaches award went to the much improved Travis Hutter who is improving his technique each week and taking everything on board. The Rhynie award winner this week goes to Reece Lay. Well done everyone, the improvement is there for all to see.

A very special thank you to Mr Milton Reynolds for his ongoing and generous sponsorship to our juniors, Milton has been contributing to the junior program for a few years now and we can't thank him enough. Until next week keep practicing.

The way we played against Collingwood in round 11 signaled we were due for a rest. I felt mentally and physically exhausted, so I really felt ready for the split round. So having the past few days off was a great opportunity to get away and refresh the mind, body and soul. I took the opportunity to get away with my girlfriend Kaila to Balgownie Estate in the Yarra Valley in Melbourne's outer east. I've got family in Wodonga, but it was my first opportunity to see some of the Victorian country side – and I loved it. Driving out to the Yarra Valley, it felt much more than an hour away from Melbourne, so it was great to see the beautiful scenery and great countryside. I love the country – fresh air and green grass. And staying at a winery was a bit different for me. I'd had such a good weekend away, but also did a bit of self reflection. I spoke to my girlfriend about setting goals for the rest of the season. I'd also put some things in place with development

coach Kelly O'Donnell, on the Thursday before the break. We spoke about areas of improvement and things I was doing well. It was great to have a chat and catch up. I had to write some things down to give to him this week. They were things like how I'll approach the next 11 games of the season, develop my game and do my bit for the team. That all starts this Friday against Essendon. Overall, the break was great, but I was ready to go on Monday. We had a weights session that day, with our main training session on Tuesday. Everyone came back with an extra bit of enthusiasm. They all wore smiles out at Casey Fields, so it was great to see everyone coming back refreshed. I know I was better for it. Playing on Friday night isn't something a few of us younger players have experienced, so we've got to cherish this upcoming opportunity.

LAKE GRACE D Grade FOOTBALL NOTES Only one match to report on this edition due to the Colts Carnival Bye Weekend. It was our away match at Ongerup. We were confident, coming off our win against Borden and were hoping we could do the same job on Ongerup. In near perfect conditions we had a good warm up and got out on the field expecting to have control of the play. Ongerup had other ideas and were quick at slamming on two goals in the first five minutes. That is officially the last time I under rate a side, and from now on previous results against other sides mean nothing! To our guys credit they held firm in defense and the forward line started to open up a bit, allowing us a goal late in the quarter. We weren't hard enough at the ball and allowed Ongerup to take possession too easily, so in the second quarter we shuffled a few positions around to try and create more opportunities.

Liam Baker was working hard on the ball but was mobbed at every possession he had, minimizing his impact on the game. Some of the opposition had other intentions besides the ball and we were intimidated out of the contest a bit. The game was pretty even after that first quarter with Ongerup players moving the ball amongst themselves better than we were. Both sides missed a few opportunities. The game was in the balance right up to the last minute with Ongerup eventually running out winners by 3 points. Not that we could tell initially, as the score board only fired up on the League match. Morton boys award went to Joe Fonda, kicking a much needed goal against the tide. This weekend a full on scratch match at Nyabing to get ready for Jerramungup at home the following week.

Lake Grace/Pingrup Football Round 7 Lake Grace/Pingrup Vs Ongerup The final game of the round saw the Lake Grace/Pingrup Bombers head down to Ongerup as huge underdogs. With the week leading up to the game there was high controversy with a lot of soul searching being done between the much loved team. On a cold Saturday the Bombers headed down to make amends of the season so far, Ongerup were very confident while the Bombers had nothing to lose. Inspirational words from the Super Coach Greg Pinney before the game set the boys up for an exciting first quarter every player putting in their all for their team, their mates, their club and their supporters. The Black and Red jumpers were seen across the oval swarming on every loose ball and pack they could. In the back line ‗Workhorse‘ Chris Trevenen had a massive task playing on the extremely Dangerous Craig Boulton with over a 8 goal average this season. The Workhorse strived from the challenge and was strong not giving Boulton an inch all day. While up forward Karl ‗Drop Punt‘ Fleay was getting plenty of the ball, but kicking goals was another story though at the end of the first quarter the Bombers were 9 goals to 2. Inaccuracy was the big issue come the second quarter with the Bomber kicking 7 points while Ongerup came flying back with 10 goals kicking with the breeze. At half

time comrade Rey was strong in the Lake Grace/Pingrup camp and for the first time you could tell the players were there for each other. This showed after half time with the work rate of all players lifting while the game itself turned into a hard running cat fight. The Bombers were still down at the last change but the feeling between the players coaching staff and supporters was that nothing would take this game away. The final quarter came down to the last 3 minutes with Lake Grace/Pingrup being down by 1 point. Through pure desperation the Bombers manage to put on one final goal and held on to win their first game of 2009 by 5 points. Fantastic Jimmy Farcough was inspirational over four quarters while honours should go to every one of the 22 players that ran out onto the field for the Black and Red. Big congratulation to Mickey ‗The Brut‘ Trevenen on an outstanding first league game along with Aaron ‗Prince‘ Carruthers and Aaron ‗The digger‘ Dunham with well deserved league games, to have these players in the side was a tremendous show of their character and efforts around the club and on the field. Congratulations to the reserves for another terrific win against the side that knocked them out of the finals last season. The courageous win was lead by the terrific skills and talent of Aaron ‗Prince‘ Carruthers, ‗Bulldog‘ Benny Tomkins and local ‗Pinup Boy‘ Brendan Desmond.
