You may not be familiar with ollies, kickfl ips, half-pipes and rail grinds .... you might have a totally different meaning for ‘gnarly’ or ‘sick’ .... but put them all together and you’ve got a language kids can understand - and now a place to practise it!Almost fi ve years after the idea fi rst sparked, the Skatepark at Barry Curtis Park, Flat Bush is a reality.Hopefully, it will be operational in time for the southern and eastern skateboard regionals, a qualifi er for the Skateboard Nationals in Greenlane over Labour Weekend. What started out as a request from Dannemora kids to campaigning mayor Len Brown for a local skatepark, became closer to being when the Manukau City Council established a technical advisory group including skateboard advocates and retailers to work with designers Isthmus Group Limited.A website, and social networks Facebook and Twitter played a key role in keeping people up to date and encouraging feedback.Skate advocate Owen Williams, Mark Findlay from Cheapskates Manukau and Boardertown’s Tim Guy were part of the design committee, so from the outset the project had loads of industry expertise.Mark says “it’s been cool being on the advisory team and seeing the park evolve the way we set out to do. It’s exciting to see how far it’s come from basically a blank sheet of paper.’’A wild winter kept pushing back completion date, but with the fi nal concrete poured, the park is ready for all those fl iptricks, 180s, grinds and slides. The skatepark has already won a silver award for consultation at the prestigious Landscape Architecture Awards in Wellington. In an earlier interview Mr Brown expressed his satisfaction at the amount of involvement local kids had in the planning.“They feel ownership of the park,’’ he said. “It gives them some great lessons in life about the fact that if you’ve got a dream and you’re determined enough you can actually make these things happen.’’
Council and the Botany Community Board have been fully supportive of the project. In fact, says Mark, “They’ve bent over backwards to make this happen, and Vince Perry [of Manukau Parks] has been a bit of a magician in this regard.’’The council is also investigating appointing a paid supervisor for the site, having seen the success of the Otara skatepark. One of the features of the Flat Bush park is the Cradle, the only one of its kind in New Zealand.View the park’s progress online at www.bcparkskatepark.co.nz.

It’s the season of uncertainty - that time of year when you need to pluck up courage and check the ‘barbie’ after its winter hibernation!Even if you scraped it down and oiled it, winter will have taken its toll. Any food remnants will be unhygienic, grease or oil residues will ruin the taste of fresh food, and damp problems can create anything from rust to mould. “Spills, splatters and fat running into corners and crevices are inevitable in a barbecue,” says Rich Lailey of The Oven Cleaning Company. “Food and grime build-up makes barbecue grills and hotplates a nasty zoo of germs. It’s the same in your kitchen oven.’’The Oven Cleaning Company offers a convenient, quick and affordable cleaning service that will make both your barbecue and oven, feel and smell like new. That’s one messy spring cleaning job you won’t have to face yourself. In around two hours, they will professionally remove all grease, fat and burnt-on carbon deposits from your oven, hob, rangehood or barbecue, using a non-toxic environment friendly cleaning products that has been tried and tested in the UK. (Using harsh cleaning solvents do far more harm than good, can damage appliances and create noxious gases)Parts are cleaned in a heated dip tank, and your
barbecue or oven will be carefully reassembled.Rich charges a fi xed price for cleaning your oven no matter how dirty and barbecues are priced according to size.So the best advice is, leave the DIY to dad’s dubious barbecue cooking, and let the professionals do the cleaning. The Oven Cleaning Company is owner-operated and will come to your home at your convenience. The Oven Cleaning Company is available Monday to Friday, eight till late! As sheer fl oaty fabrics, relaxed cottons and pretty sandals begin to appear in the shops, we’ve pored through the latest looks for spring/summer 2010/2011 to unearth the trends.
Ra-ra-romance:Return to romance with fashion trends from fl orals to pastel shades and ruffl e-front tops. Floral fabrics mirror the spring garden with beautiful blossom prints decorating dresses, jackets, scarves and headbands.Soft, feminine shades evoke a girlish innocence, seen in pretty fl oral strapless dresses and colourful cocktail frocks. Plenty of bold, dramatic `fi rework’ fl orals too, with contrasting vibrant patterns.Personalise with key accessories - a necklace, hairpiece, belt or funky sandals.Sheer is everywhere with sheer tops and long, fl oating dresses.Soft draping fabrics, and muted pastels, neutrals and whites also fi t the romantic theme.
Bold stripes:From nautical-inspired tops to psychedelic dresses, stripes have jazzed up many runways.Skinny horizontal stripes can be relatively slimming, creating the illusion of curves. Draping, asymmetrical or diagonal stripes can be very fl attering. Many designers are using stripes and bold black and white patterns to create eye-popping optical illusions.
Tribal style:International designers have referenced world cultures on the catwalk this year, with Egyptian wall paintings and Balinese prints infl uencing garments.Maori designers and patterns have found their place in the sun, with seven young Maori designers represented last month in New Zealand Fashion Week’s Miromoda show.
Lean legs and cover-ups:Short shorts are hugely popular, from tailored to tight hot pants depending on your age, confi dence and fi tness. The young can do hot pants, perhaps with tank tops or fl oaty tunic tops and vests, perfect for clubbing on hot summer nights.Harem pants, knee-length shorts or three-quarter pants (cuffed above the ankle) are great options if you wear longer wrap tops, although three-quarter styles can be uncomfortable if you are short or have large calves.
For curvy and pear-shaped women, maxidresses are feminine, fl attering and can be dressed up or down.Soft, billowing fabric is perfect for hot summer days, and you will feel fabulous and look right on trend.
Colour me beautifulSoft pastel and fruity shades will get you in the summer mood. Bold mandarin orange and pineapple/lemon tones are perfect.Softer shades are also prevalent, from peachy nudes and beiges to muted greys and icy cornfl ower blues.Crisp, vibrant white is very sophisticated, especially with tailored jackets and pants; also works well with loose kaftans and tops, evoking lazy days by the pool. White pants look great with a nude or beige heel.In terms of jewellery, beautiful azure blues and turquoise shades are desirable.
Graphic patternsGraphic tees and tops add humour and personality.Bold prints can take a dress from okay to wow.Look out for polka-dots, which have made a resurgence.
Wedding invitesSoft silks, fl oaty fl orals, organza, belted satins, tiered dresses and strapless numbers are all perfect for attending summer weddings; matching jackets if it goes on into evening. Hats are defi nitely in the mix.You need to do some detective work about the bridal party choice, but colour wise you can’t go wrong with nude or pearly oyster hues, or pastel prints. Wear some strappy heels and carry a tiny box clutch purse.
Tribal Styles, Romance, an exciting time for fashion

GardenCafeCome and enjoy Kings
Spring is upon us and the garden should be prepared for a great planting season ahead. The month of October is the traditional time for gardeners to plant all of those colourful perennials, fl owers and vegetables. The ground should be prepared with Kings Organic compost and sheep pel-lets to ensure it’s ready for all of those wonderful new plants. For areas with clay add in gypsum or lime. These will both help to break down the clay parti-cles over time.
In the vegie gardenPlant a new crop of potatoes as it takes three months from planting to harvest. The addition of potato fer-tiliser will provide all the nutrients for successful growth. This will ensure a Christmas treat for the whole family. Sweet when dug young or leave in the ground to harvest as you need them. There’s nothing better than the taste of
a homegrown spud. Now’s the time to plant beans, toma-toes, beetroot, peas, carrots, peppers and so much more. New season’s stock is arriving daily so start planting now. To get strong healthy growth with abundant fl owers and fruit use Kings Fast food (liquid blood and bone).
In the fl ower gardenWhether you are freshening up your baskets, pots or tiding up your garden beds, it’s best to mass plant with one or two colours. This will give impact to the planting. It’s important to replace the soil in your pots and containers with Kings container mix to ensure that you get the best result for the money spent. With colourful annuals like marigolds, lobelia, dahlias, petunias and salvias you are guaranteed to have a massive fl oral display this summer. Pinch out any dead fl ower heads, this will en-
courage the promotion of new fl ower buds and lengthen the fl owering peri-od. There is always a stunning variety of colourful perennials coming in-store. A good tip is to buy fl owering perenni-als throughout the year rather than all at once. This way you will always have colour in the garden throughout the changing seasons. One of the most stunning introductions this year is the newly released range of fuchsias from Europe. With over 60 new varieties there is something for everyone. From exquisite doubles, dainty singles and colours that haven’t been seen in New Zealand before.
In the general gardenIt really is the most stunning time of the year with all of the magnolias, cher-ries, fruit trees, camellias, rhododen-drons, and azaleas bursting into bloom throughout Auckland. Now is the per-fect time to have a good cleanup and
re-plan of your garden after a long wet and windy winter. Feed the garden with Kings general fertiliser to encourage a good fl ush of spring growth. Prune back general shrubs and remove any dead or unwanted branches from trees. Remove any old or unwanted annuals that may be left from last sea-son and make a list of the stock that will be needed for replacements.
At Kings they have a wonderful team of friendly trained horticultural staff who are only too happy to help you with all of your garden needs.Remember all Kings plants are guar-anteed to grow!

Many Auckland Bungalows and Villas are clearly distinguished by their attractive timber windows and doors. Now, with some barely noticeable changes, genuine double glazing can be installed into these existing frames. This maintains the character of your home. What’s more, with timber having better insulating properties than aluminium, the results are even more noticeable. Over the last six years The Double Glazing Company has been retro-fi tting double glazing into existing timber windows and doors in Auckland homes. “We fi nd some people have been told that their timber doors or windows will have to be replaced to allow for double glazing,” says Dave Morse from The Double Glazing Company. “This is not the case. Our solutions will work for most timber joinery. The key requirement is that it is in sound condition.”“This means that home owners can maintain the character and the superior thermal performance of their timber frames.” With many timber windows having glass that is thin and unsafe, upgrading to double glazing is an easy way to address safety and insulation at the same time. The old single glass is replaced with new double glazing. This
also provides the opportunity to consider glass options such as tinted and low e glass. While tinted glass helps reduce the impact of the sun in summer, low e glass provides a further step up in the thermal performance of your windows. Double glazing will improve your home insulation, making a positive contribution to family health and reducing energy costs. The Double Glazing Company has operations based in Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo and Wellington. Contact them for a no obligation quotation today (Auckland 929 4980).
