Stephen Collins: Renaissance Man

FRIDAY, MAY 16 AT 1 P.M.

The thirties through the fifties represent a great period of American Theatrical History. The influence of and reaction to the Great Depression is evident in the work of William Saroyan. The 40’s saw the talent of three great playwrights emerge who dominated the theater—Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Eugene O’Neil. All three examine dysfunctional families and the American dream gone awry. In 1954, N. Richard Nash’s play The Rainmaker opens at the Cort Theater in New York City. The character Starbuck charms audiences with his brand of con and hucksterism. Stephen Collins performs monologues from these and other playwrights and may even sing a Cole Porter and George Gershwin tune to round off the performance. Cost is $3 and includes coffee, tea, and pastry. Please stop by the reception desk of the Whipple Senior Center to register.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the

Weymouth Cultural Council which is supported by the

Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

OLDE KIDS ON THE BLOCK Wednesday, May 14

retired and semi-retired musicians will transport you back to that era and will have you dancing, humming, or tapping your feet. Dancers and listeners alike will thoroughly enjoy an uplifting

afternoon of music and the vocals of Mara Castle. Cost: $5. Coffee, tea and pastry included. You may pay at the door.

MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow. Older adults are at a much higher risk of unintentional

injury and even death than the rest of the population.

Unintentional injuries to this population result in millions

of medically treated injuries and more than 30,000 deaths

every year. With a focus on safety during Older

Americans Month, the Administration for Community

Living plans to use this opportunity to raise awareness

about this critical issue. By taking control of their safety,

older Americans can live longer, healthier lives.

In recognition of this year’s theme, “Safe Today, Healthy

Tomorrow”, the Weymouth Fire Department will present:

Seniors are one of the most vulnerable populations at risk

of fire related injury or death. This program is aimed at

educating seniors on fire prevention, general home safety

and how to be better prepared in the event of a fire.

The Fire Prevention Coordinator will present on topics of:

Home fire safety

The proper type and location of residential smoke

detectors

Risks associated with smoking, home oxygen use,

cooking, electrical and heating dangers

Please call 781-682-6140 to register. Coffee and pastry

will be served.

This program offered under the Senior S.A.F.E. (Senior

Student Awareness of Fire Education) grant.

TRIAD MEETING MONDAY, MAY 12 AT NOON

SAFETYNET BY LOJACK

In keeping with the theme for Older Americans Month 2014, “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow”, Ralph Poland from SafetyNet by Lojack will do a presentation on this reliable search & rescue program. Caring for a loved one who wanders is a considerable responsibility. Nothing is more frightening than the thought of a loved one with Alzheimer’s and related conditions such as autism and Down Syndrome or other cognitive impairment becoming lost. This program allows public safety agencies to find that person quickly when every minute counts. Even if you may not need this now, it is valuable to learn about it, if the need every arises. Come on down, and enjoy a slice of pizza! Call 781-682-6140 to register. Space is limited.

Sheriff Bellotti’s TRIAD program links elderly people with their

local police and fire departments and councils on aging in

order to keep seniors aware of important issues and programs

available to them. Triad meetings are held quarterly at the

“I personally measure success in terms of the contributions an individual makes to her or his fellow human beings.”

Margaret Mead (1901-1978) American anthropologist

Happy Mothers’ Day to all our wonderful mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers and great, great-grandmothers. We were fortunate to have the same great AARP volunteers, Joe Sterling, Program Coordinator; Ed Adamson and Jim Packard return again this year to prepare and submit Federal and State income tax forms for our seniors. These knowledgeable men shared their time and expertise for this important service. In addition to working 352 hours and filing taxes for 348 people, extensive training and testing are required. On behalf of all those you assisted, we thank you. Our appreciation to Lois Gilboy for sharing her artistic ability to transform the lobby at the Whipple Center for each holiday or season. After this winter in particular, the flowers and pastel colors were a welcome sight, a reminder that spring really would arrive soon. You will also find her cheerily greeting people from the front desk at the Center on Tuesday mornings. Thank you, Lois, for all you do. Welcome to new volunteer, Brenda Flood, Driver Happy Birthday to our volunteers celebrating this month – Peter Akins, 6; Margaret Austin, 24, Carol Cayon, 22; Karen Devonshire, 4; Lois Egon, 14; C.B.Keith, 9; Nancy Killelea, 16; Judy McSweeney, 9; Marge Murphy, 1; Paul Warren, 18 Thank you to Randy Cushing for his generous donation of a spinet piano. Randy is the pianist for the Choral Group whose members practice here at the Senior Center on the first Tuesday of the month. They “take their show on the road” to various skilled nursing facilities where those residents really enjoy their music. If anyone is interested in joining the group, come to this month’s practice on Tuesday, May 6 at 1:30 p.m.

Our volunteers are the BEST! Camille Collins Coordinator of Volunteers

DROP-IN SING-A-LONG WITH RANDY

Tuesday, May 6 at 2:45 p.m. and

Thursday, May 22 at 1:00 p.m.

Randy, our volunteer pianist with the Choral Group, has offered to play for a drop-in

sing-a-long. This could be a fun activity for those of you who like to sing informally to

well known songs or just come, listen and tap your feet! Music is a wonderful way to uplift our

spirits and we can all use that. If we have enough interest, it could become a regular activity.

So, just drop in!

The volunteer program is funded in part by a Community Development Block Grant.

FROM ANDREA IN THE OUTREACH OFFICE Are you turning 65? Steps to prepare for Medicare.

Medicare is a government run health insurance program that is available to seniors over the age of 65

and certain disabled individuals under the age of 65. If you or your spouse has paid into the Social

Security system for 10 years or more, then Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) is premium free. If you

do not qualify for free coverage then you can buy Medicare A coverage. Medicare B (Medical Insurance)

has a monthly premium which is automatically deducted from your Social Security check. Your

Medicare Insurance covers you only 80%, so you will need to purchase a Medicare Supplemental

Insurance to cover the costs not paid for by Medicare Parts A&B (co-pays, deductibles, etc.) Lastly, you

will need to purchase a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug policy to pay for your prescription drugs. If

you are still working, ask if your employer has a plan that will continue to pay medical expenses as the

secondary payer after you become eligible for Medicare Part A at age 65. You will need to decide if you

should keep your employer’s plan as a secondary payer to Medicare, or drop your employer’s plan and

enroll in Medicare B and purchase a Medicare supplement or join a Medicare Advantage plan. It is

important to learn what Medicare will and will not cover. To better understand Medicare, you can get a

copy of the Medicare & You Handbook or The Guide to Health Insurance for People with Medicare on

line at www.medicare.gov or call at 1-800-633-4227. You also can make an appointment with our

SHINE volunteers here at the senior center for help with any health insurance questions. You should

contact the Social Security Administration to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B. There are three ways to

do this: by phone at 1-800-772-1213 or online at www.socialsecurity.gov or in person at your nearest

social security office. The Initial Enrollment period is a seven month window during which you must

enroll in Medicare Parts A & B. This period begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends on

the last day of the third month after your 65th birthday. If you have been receiving Medicare due to

disability, you have a six month open enrollment period to purchase a supplement insurance beginning

on your 65th birthday. If you do not enroll during your eligibility period, you will have to wait until the

next open enrollment period where your coverage will not begin until the following July 1st, and you will

incur a penalty on your Medicare part B premium by 10% for each year of delayed enrollment. If you

decide to stay on your employer’s health insurance, then contact your local social security office to learn

your options about delaying enrolling in Medicare Part B. If you have creditable coverage, you can delay

enrolling in Part B and will not incur a penalty for this period of time. But this is only true if you are on

your employer’s plan and still working. The rules change if you retire and decide to stay on your

employer’s plan. Also remember that if you do not enroll in a Medicare Part D plan and you do not

have creditable coverage, you will incur a penalty when you do enroll of 1% for each month that you are

late enrolling. After your initial enrollment period, you will be allowed to enroll during the Annual

Election Period, which runs October 15th through Dec. 7th each year.
