23/10/93 T H O K O Z A -IFP supporter, Mr Mavuso, was shot by black SADF sold iers whilst on his w ay home from the local shop Mr Mavuso was only carrying bread and m ilk at the time o f the attack. IFP m em ber, Mr O tto Masuko, took down the registration num bers of the SADF Buffels (BBY449M, BBY133M and BBV034M) and was threatened by these so ld iers that he would be shot if he continued taking the num bers down.

Mr Madiba was in the process o f organising the Northern Transvaal delegates who would „ go to the IFP Special Conference. These SANDF sold iers then proceeded to the house o f M r M som i’s neighbour and broke down the door. The SANDF sold iers la ter returned to Mr M som i’s house and assaulted him again. M r M som i was then placed in an SANDF vehicle and taken to the SANDF base at U m bum bulu. W hilst in the vehicle Mr Msomi was again assaulted and also witnessed the assault o f another youth who was taken by the SANDF.

At the SANDF base Mr M som i was “tubed" with a rubber tube by SANDF sold iers and he w as held there for the whole day before being chased out.

Two SAPS vehicles were present during the assault and a third passed by the incident. The SAPS did not assist and stood w itness to the incident. The SANDF have obstructed the investigation by its behaviour regarding identification parades.

05/09/95 O KHAHLAM BA / W EMBEZI VQ SECTION -The body o f IFP Branch Chairperson, Mr Jabulani Khumalo, was found inside a Nyala vehicle. The SANDF stated that an o f duty policem an, Constable M andla Buthelezi, was found in W em bezi wearing civilian c lothes and arm ed with a R1 rifle. Constable Buthelezi w as with two other people. During questioning shots were fired and those questioned were loaded into the Nyala. The vehicle drove in the direction where shots were fired and were again fired at. H ereafter the body o f Mr Khum alo was found in the vehicle. The R1 rifle o f C onst Buthelezi w as taken for ballistic tests and Const Buthelezi was charged. CR44/09/95

14/09/95 HLANG ANANI / M PENDLE-NZING A -IFP C ha irperson, Mr Nash Protus Ngubane, was abducted by persons posing as SAPS m em bers. Mr Ngubane was at hom e when two police vehicles, a lleged ly from P ieterm aritzburg, arrived and the occupants asked tha t the gate be opened. Four black m en got out of the first vehicle and cam e into the house, where one produced an ID card. The o ther vehic le was occupied by white m en. One o f the men inside the house picked up Mr Ngubane’s G3 rifle and pistol and asked if they were licensed. Mr Ngubane produced the licenses. A fter searching Mr N gubane ’s house they took Mr Ngubane away and also removed the G3 rifle. M r Ngubane had his pistol on him.

The fo llow ing m orning Mrs Ngubane reported her husband missing at the local SAPS station and was informed that no policem en from Pieterm aritzburg had been in the area. At 8am Mrs Ngubane was informed that her husband’s body was found at the main Bulwer/Boston Road.

At noon three black SAPS m em bers arrived at Mr N gubane ’s house and Mrs Ngubane recognised two of them as from the group that had come in the night. Later the sam e day fu rthe r SAPS vehicles arrived and she recognised a white SAPS officer as one o f the persons who was there.

On several occasions Mr Ngubane was threatened by AN C m em bers who tried to get him to gain more support fo r the ANC or be killed. These threats were reported to the SAPS.

02/10/95 HLANGANANI / M PENDLE -IFP m em bers, M r Jabulani Zum a (36) and Mr Ndulela Ndlovu (37), were shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Raphael Mbanjwa (30) and Mr Bheki H longwa (30) were injured. Six houses w ere also set alight in the attack.

08/10/95 CLERM O NT -Three IFP m em bers were shot and injured in two separate attacks on IFP supporters attempting to the launch o f an IFP branch at the Kranskloo f hostel. Two o f the injured, Mr Petros N gcobo and Ms Nobuhle Ngidi, were shot w hilst waiting at the buses which were to go to the hostel. The o ther person injured was shot and injured whilst sitting in one o f the buses leaving C lerm ont.

Two men were arrested and a .303 rifle with te lescopic sights was confiscated at a house from which the shots were fired. The launch was postponed after it was deem ed unsafe to proceed with the inauguration.

10/10/95 HLANGANANI / M PENDl F - A IFP member, Mrs Mncube, was assaulted at her homestead by m em bers o f the SAPS. A tube w as put into

her face whilst these SAPS mem bers were beating her and insisting that she te ll them the w hereabouts o f suspects.

.12/10/95 MSINGA / KEATE’S DRIFT - 01 hfinTwo children, CelaniZulu (12) and H langanani Zulu (13), were shot and killed during a SANDF search of the house o f IFP m em ber Mr M tonotshwala Zulu (45). Ms N onhlanhla Zulu (6) and Ms Z inde Zulu (14) were also assaulted and hit with rifles during the incident. Mrs Dela Zulu and M rs Landiwe Zulu were further also assaulted. One SANDF m em ber was also killed during the incident.

One of those killed was shot inside the bathroom and his body dragged to the living room . The other child was shot whilst trying to flee the house in which three teargas grenades w ere thrown. The SANDF have alleged that these children were firing at them , but this is disputed by those present in the house.

Mr M tonotshw ala Zulu escaped from the house, not knowing w ho was firing at them , and reported the matter at the local SAPS. The SAPS arrived at the scene, finding the SANDF there. It appears that the SANDF attempted to raid the prem ises w ithout an SAPS presence as is required by law.

The com m unity have blockaded the Greytown-Dundee road and dem anded that the National Minister of Safety and Security address the issue.

12/11/95 OKHAHLAM BA / W EM BF7I -Three SANDF sold iers were arrested when they were found am ongst an ANC crowd who gathered to harass IFP m em bers travelling to a rally addressed by IFP President, Dr MG Butheiezi. Those arrested were in full SANDF fatigues and in possession o f SANDF identity cards. A fourth so ld ier ran away. It was also found that the four SANDF soldiers were form er Um khonto we Sizwe cadres.

The presence o f these SANDF soldiers supports information given to the IFP tha t four ex-MK m em bers now serving in the SANDF were “h ired’’ by local ANC structures to assassinate D r Butheiezi.

14/11/95 NSELENI / MAM BUKA - 16h30IFP mem ber, Mr Velaphi Linda (68), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

14/11/95 MATHOSI / NEM BE-DENDFTHU - 23h00The homesteads o f four IFP members, Mr Vusi Mkhize, Mr Bobozi Zungu, Mr Mali N gem a, and Mr Sabesile Dlamini, were set a light by identified ANC supporters.

15/11/95 HLANGANANI / BULW ER - 15hf)nIFPYB Gqumeni Chairperson, Mr Ndabazakhe Nthiza (33), was shot and killed w hen he dropped o f apassenger at the Bulwer-Underberg road. Mr Nthiza was fired at from a N issan Skyline and 9m mcartridges were found at the scene. Mr N thiza's passenger, Ms A lbertina M khize (32), was also shot and injured in the attack.

01/12/95 SUNDUMBILII QHIBIJKWANF -IFP member, Mr Lugani Mthethwa (22), was shot in the back and stomach by members of the Special Investigation Team. CR3/12/95

02/12/95 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBF7I-MAHASHINI - 17h3 nIFP member, Mr Bongani Ngubo (17), was shot and injured when alleged ANC supporters from Depot Section attacked people in Mahashini Section.

02/12/95 HLANGANANI / LOSKOP - 1Qh30Three IFP members were shot at by unidentified attackers who drove up to the local butchery near Gorton Store crossroads and directed their vehicle lights at the members. Mr Tika Msomi (21) was shot and killed and Mr Hlabi Msomi (27) and Mr Pi Msomi (24) were injured.

04/12/95 HLANGANANI / MPFNDLE-NZINGA -IFP Mpendle Constituency Chairperson, Mr Mgudleni Madlala, was shot and killed whilst at a community meeting to discuss the RDP. Three armed men approached the meeting and opened fire on Mr Madlala. An AK-47 assault rifle, 9mm pistol and 7.65 pistol was used in the attack.

05/12/95 IZINGOLWENI / SHOBA-MDLAZI WARD -Six people were shot and killed in an attack by unidentified attackers. The names o f the deceased are: Mrs Martha Ntombi Cele (53), Ms Phumzile Cele (32), Mr Mxolisi Cele (6-months), Mr Mfaniseni Gambushe (11- months), Mr Alpheus Ntobela (42) and Ms Lindiwe Ngcobo (31).

19/12/95 HLANGANANI /M PENDI E-NZINGA -The house of late IFP Constituency Chairperson, Mr Mgudleni Madlala, was attacked by persons armed with automatic rifles and postils. Mrs Madlala and her children were forced to flee. (See 04/12/95)

20/12/95 HLANGANANI / MPENDI F-NZING A - 17h30The house o f late IFP Constituency Chairperson, Mr Mgudleni Madlala, was again attacked by persons armed with firearms. No injuries were reported. (See 04/12/95 & 18/12/95)

21/12/95 HLANGANANI / MPENDLE-NZINGA -The SAPS raided a house in the area which was the venue for a recent meeting held by ANC MPP, Mr Sifiso Nkabinde. Members of the community also complained about the presence of a group o f heavily armed POPCRU members at this home during the funeral o f Mr Madlala (See 04/12/95). On the morning of 21/12/95 fighting broke out in the vicinity of this home and one person was killed and two injured.

The SAPS arrested sixteen men inside the house and recovered the following illegal firearms: 1x AK-47 assault rifle, 1x G3 rifle, 1x pump-action shotgun, 2x hand guns and 3 homemade firearms. Amongst those arrested was Rfn Khumbulani Zuma a member of the SANDF 121 Battalion.

30/12/95 HLANGANANI / MPENDI F-N7INnA -A large number of ANC supporters arrived in Nzinga in taxis and other vehicles and fired shots in the air in the presence of SANDF members. Later the same day IFP members, Mr Sibusiso Mnikathi (29) and Mr Khuze Mnikathi (27), were shot and killed by attackers armed with AK-47 assault rifles. Two houses were also set alight. In another attack two family members of the late Mr Mgudleni Madlala were shot and killed.

03/01/96 SUNDUMBIl I / MATSHEKETSHENI -IFP member, Ms Thethiwe Sibongiie Khanyile (34), was assaulted by members o f the Special Investigation Team and her right thigh was fractured. CR64/01/96

05/01/96 SUNDUMRII I -IFP member, Mr Bongani Mlambo (25), was assaulted by members of the Special Investigation Team CR112/01/96

07/01/96 HLANGANANI / DONNYBRQOK-GALA - 21h00IFP member, Mr Thulani Mthembu (29), was shot and killed at Gala ward by a person armed with a rifle CR23/1/96

07/01/96 OKHAHLAMBA / LOSKOP-MKOMOKAZINI WARD - 17h00A group of ANC supporters attacked people gathering for a wedding. These attackers fired on the crowd and Mr Mbukeleni Msomi (22) was shot and killed.

08/01/96 HLANGANANI / STOFFELTON - 1?hnnKwaZulu-Natal Minister of Traditional Affairs and Environment, Inkosi NJ Ngubane, MPP Mr David Ntombela and Senator Philip Powell and people accompanying them were ambushed at Stoffelton near Mpendle.

The ambush took place before a meeting called by Inkosi Ngubane in his capacity of Chairperson of the Hlanganani Regional Authority. The meeting was called at the request of local residents to discuss the outbreak of criminality and political harassment following on the murder o f Inkosi DT Molefe. Community members alleged that local SDU members were robbing pensioners and that residents are forced to join the ANC. (See 01/10/95)

KwaZulu-Natal Minister of Traditional Affairs and Environment, iNkosi NJ Ngubane, Provincial MPP David Ntombela and Senator Philip Powell, along with others were ambushed at Stoffelton. The attack took place prior to a meeting called by iNkosi Ngubane to discuss the outbreak of criminality and political harassment following the murder of iNkosi Molefe. Mr Mzano Shandu was killed in the ambush.

10/01/96 HLANGANANI / GQUMENI - 20h30The house of prominent IFP member, Mr Popo Eric Kathi (46), was attacked by a group o f persons armed with heavy calibre weapons. Miss Sylvia Mbizane (11) was shot and killed in this attack. An ANC membership card was found at the scene bearing the name of Mr Musawenkosi Maduna (Membership No: 146994), a prominent ANC member from Stoffelton. CR35/1/96
