MOVIES ON TV TELEVISION THIS DAY THAT YEAR MUST DO AUGUST 16, 2019 Ask Me Anything A ntiheroes are protagonists who don’t have the usual ‘heroic’ characteristics commonly attributed to traditional protagonists — not to be confused with villains or an- tagonists. Antiheroes, unlike antago- nists, are complicated, imper- fect people with ambiguous morals and character flaws, of- ten doing the ‘right thing’ be- cause of selfish reasons or some compulsion; but they are the he- roes of their own stories. Even though such characters have ex- isted in literature since the times of Homer, they became one of the staples of cinema only after WW2. A good example of an anti- hero is Taapsee Pannu’s Sha- bana Khan in Naam Shabana (2017) and Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Baazigar’. Be- cause: 1. Not all as- pects of their person- ality are very ‘likeable’: they’re in- troverted, easily provoked (and to a violent end), ruth- less, and with an unhap- py childhood that con- tinues to haunt them. 2. They have self- serving reasons for do- ing whatever they are doing — primarily to avenge a loved one’s death. 3. We root for them anyway: despite their flaws. MUST SEE From ‘Super 30’ to ‘83’, some of Bollywood’s finest movies are inspired by true events and stories of tragedy, resilience and success. Check out this list of films based on true stories that immortalise real-life moments, memories and individuals. A report by Ritika Kumar NO ONE KILLED JESSICA (2011) Based on the murder of model Jessica Lall in an uptown eatery in Delhi, and her sister, Sabrina Lall’s fight for justice, the film showcases the casual violence in contemporary India. The mock- ery of the legal procedure, the loopholes in the policing system, the corruption in the power cir- cles, the vulnerability of the common Indian: Sabrina’s (Vidya Balan) struggle brings life to newspaper headlines that still haven’t been forgotten. URI: THE SURGICAL STRIKE The film is based on the surgical strikes con- ducted in 2016 by the Indian Army, against mili- tant launch pads in Pakistan occu- pied Kashmir (PoK). Terrorists were reportedly killed in the operation. The film scores on the techni- cal front than creative. The combat sequences, ambush are realistically shot. 83 (2020) It was in 1983 when India won the Cricket World Cup. The match was a story of grit, passion, fear, and triumph over the West Indian’s, who were on their World Cup hattrick. Director Kabir Khan has roped in the flavour of the season Ranveer Singh to play sportstar Kapil Dev and weave the epic moment India won, despite being restricted to 183 runs. MADRAS CAFÉ Political, tense, explosive, ‘Madras Café’ is no picnic in the neighbourhood park. The film’s true star is its story which builds up to an agonising end. It brings to life the Lankan war which many viewers were too young to have known. It highlights India’s role, moving sensitively, taking no sides. SPECIAL 26 Four feisty heroes posing as a CBI team, fifty heists and one real CBI officer on the prowl to nab them. Inspired by a real incident, Neeraj Pandey cuts to the chor-police chase and weaves an intelli- gent, mind-racing thriller, keeping you tightly strapped to your seats. It captures the 80’s era beautifully; and the cinematography (Bobby Singh) is a cut above. TALVAR Teenager Shruti Tandon and domestic help Khempal are murdered - but who did it? And while the truth unravels, what else gets slashed? The film is super-sharp, a sword swipe at Bollywood’s song-and- dance, mehendi-fuelled escapism. Inspired by 2008’s Aarushi Talwar double murder case this film was a box office hit. While we’re crazy about global chart toppers and sensational musicians around the world, on home turf, there are just a few musicians who can really up the ante with their music. These artists with their original stuff should be in your playlist Nucleya Udyan Sagar, who goes by the stage name of Nucleya, introduced his sound to the masses just a few years ago. The fans who follow his gigs have increased steadfastly ever since. He doesn’t define his music as EDM but calls it ‘Dance music’. Shirley Setia Shirley, an Indian origin girl from New Zealand, has more than a million followers on Facebook. She does covers of popular Hindi film songs and presents them with her unique touch. She takes her inspiration from the likes of Asha Bhonsle and Kay Kay and was part of the YouTube Fan Fest recently. Dualist Inquiry Dualist Inquiry is the brain child of Sahej Bakshi. The Delhi-based artist studied music in LA and when he came back to India, the indie music scene was on the rise. Their tracks hardly have lyrics. The group is synonymous with every live scene that promotes this genre. Hari & Sukhmani This duo from Chandigarh plays Punjabi folk fused with ambient electronic music. Sukhmani is a trained classical singer and her powerful voice is mesmerising. Hari’s unique electronic skills perfect- ly compliment her voice. The F16s The F16s from Chennai have played at all major festivals in the country, including Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival, all editions of the NH7 Weekender, GoMAD and ZimaFest, amongst others. They believe most mundane things in life make for the best revelations. WHAT IS AN ANTI-HERO? Indie music artists who should be on your playlist “Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher.” Gautama Buddha SUPER 30 (2019) Against all odds, mathematician, Anand Kumar follows his true calling and gives shape to ‘Super 30’ – a coaching class in Patna, designed for 30 deserving, underprivileged students. 'Super 30' drives home the message that education is truly the privilege of those who have economic resources. There are many moments in the movie that will move you.
