The Church bells are back in Stanton! I want to personally thank the Stanton Baptist Church for fi nding someone to fi x them, which I hear is quite a chore within itself. The bells are such a comforting sound to me and several other Stantonians, especially during these hard times and all the theft going on around here.

We continue to have some theft here although I think the pace has slowed down a bit. Last week, we had a report that one of our residents bought a new bird feeder and food to place outside for the birds. That afternoon she thought the birds must have been really hungry because all the food was gone out of the feeder. When she went to fi ll it up, she discovered someone had taken her new feeder and replaced it with a similar one which was much older and broken – plus empty. And I thought stealing tomatoes out of someone’s garden was bad! This takes the cake folks…......

We do have some good news this week; two new Stantonians, Samuel M. Jones and Latasha D. Wakefi eld have both made the Dean’s list at UMA! I’m very proud of them both! They have both jumped right in this community and worked just as hard as the rest of us, especially at the Neighborhood Watch Fish Fry we had recently. Congratulations to them

both!Last week Stanton was

also the site for a meeting dealing with Broadband for rural areas. Our town was covered by Memphis News Chanel 5. Garrett Dancy was interviewed about the need for internet access, which we have in Stanton, but it’s not always available in the outside areas around Stanton.

Well, once again it’s time to call the Farmers Market to a close. The summer has gone by quickly despite this heat. All local produce has pretty much dried up for the year and all we had was okra last week. We’ll open it back up next summer as always during June and hope for the weather to cooperate with us a little better than this year. The strange fl ood in May really took its toll around here in Stanton, including the gardens!

As most of you know, I love to hear old stories about Stanton. I had a visitor come by last week who had a lot of information for me, but

I couldn’t remember it all! Please come on by and see me, but I need to tape the conversation or be able to write it down. I don’t want to miss anything!

The little bit of rain we received last Saturday night was a welcomed relief. Every county around us has been getting good showers and every thunderstorm would go around. It’s the little things in life that are a blessing. Speaking of blessings, Friday, August 20, Landon Rylee Harwell came into this world weighing 7 lbs. 12 oz. Landon and mother, Hollie Harwell, are home and doing fine. Grandparents are Greg and Wanda Harwell and great-grandparents are Ricky and Betty Scott.

Friends and family celebrated the late Buddy

Matlock’s birthday, which was August 16, graveside last Sunday with grandchildren reciting Bible verses and placing red roses on his grave. Then, doves were released and Sonny Matlock sang. Later everyone gathered at Lucille’s house for food and fellowship.

Geraldine Williams, mother of Butch Williams, celebrated her 90th birthday last weekend with friends at Tunica. Congratulations, Geraldine!!

Emily Herron, daughter of Gaylon and Patricia Herron, has made the Dean’s List at

West Tennessee Business College. She is studying to be a medical assistant. Congratulations, Emily!

Terri Knight’s mother, Peggy Church, has been in Germantown Methodist Hospital but is home now with Hospice coming three times a week. James Earl White is slowly getting his strength back and I hope will continue to improve. Pray for Peggy and James Earl; pray for cooler weather and a couple more inches of rain.

Thought for the week: When envy creeps into your heart, cast it out. Be happy for the success of your friends.

I spent this past weekend in Smyrna with my sister, Patsy. We always have so much fun together. Patsy’s daughter, Jennifer, joined us Saturday, and we spent the day shopping and dining in downtown Franklin. We had a great weekend.

Mr. Hal Rodgers’ group, Living Truth, was at Allen Sunday evening. I am sorry that I did not get back from Smyrna in time to attend, but I know that everyone enjoyed hearing them sing.

Tommy, Pam, W.A. and I had dinner with Alicia, Andrew, Emily and Claire Wednesday evening to celebrate Claire’s first birthday. Alicia cooked a delicious meal, and we all enjoyed this special day and a special little girl.

Alicia and Andrew celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary August 26. Happy Anniversary to my sweet daughter and son-in-law.

Our Bible verse for this week is Romans 8:31, which states, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

“Do you trust God with your life?” was the question asked by our pastor at the beginning of the message Sunday. Scripture was read from I Kings concerning the man Obadiah. He was a believer, but walked a fi ne line working for the evil King Ahab and attempting to serve the Lord. When Jesus moves into our lives, after we are saved, He wants to make changes. Many believers feel they cannot trust God with their lives. Not only are we to trust Him, but seek His will as we make decisions concerning our relationships, occupations and in every area of our lives.

Danny Simpson thrilled our hearts as he brought the special music Sunday morning. The fl owers on the Lord’s Supper table were given in memory of Edward Vanstory by his wife, Bennie.

It was a busy place on the corner of Poplar Corner Road and Dr. Hess Road last Saturday at Holly Grove Church. Thirteen pots of stew were cooked and all eaten or carried home, plus a large number

of barbequed chicken halves and all types of desserts were provided. People came from surrounding communities and some came from Jackson, Memphis, Covington, Brownsville and Bells. Dewey Jones and his son Alan, Bob and Cindy Alexander, Ricky Hopper and Gary Blair arrived early and prepared a county breakfast for everyone before their work began.

Happy birthday to Kellie King, Brooke McNatt, Glenn White and Letha Adkisson. Happy anniversary to Celso and Paula Lara.

Heather Bolinger and her little son and her sister-in-law Mandy from Maryville, Luis and Tiffanie Rosales from Clarksville and Julie Hopkins and Hayden from Hernando, MS came for the weekend and visited with Gary and Kellie King and then visited with Alan and Debbie Jones. They attended church at Holly Grove Sunday. Following church services, Pop and Nannie Jones and Lorie and Brent and Jessica Byrd joined them at a

Brownsville restaurant for a meal.

Heather was going to spend the night with her sister Tiffanie in Clarksville and the following morning give a talk to some of the students at the high school where Tiffanie teaches.

Those on the sick list needing our prayers are Janie and Ray Hight, Bobby Jones, who is home following surgery, Melvin Holcomb, Liz Kemper, Mae Simpson, Glenn White and Carolyn Covington. Others to include are Elsie Lewis, Ailene Knott, Neil Herbert, Billy Cox, Fletcher Lewis, Grace Lovelace, Arlene Owens, Mikey Dotson and Roy Staggs.

Ricky and Kathy Hopper and Cindy Saveh attended the Freshman Orientation Service at Bethel University in McKenzie where their daughters, Katie Hopper and Sabrina Saveh are freshmen. Katie performed with the Renaissance Choir. They sang both modern and traditional hymns, concluding with the great hymn of praise, “Victory in Jesus.”

This past week was a fun time here at Sugar Creek. We had lots of fun things going on. Started the week with Brother Larry Sweeney bringing our residents a good Sunday afternoon message. LaJeanne Black is his only member out here, but all the residents enjoy his sermons and we appreciate him sharing his Sunday afternoon with us.

Tuesday we had what I called a “play day.” I gave facials and makeovers and let them “play” in the makeup. I told them they reminded me of a bunch of kids. That’s all grandmothers are anyway – antique kids! We did have fun and looked beautiful the rest of the day as far as we knew – and no one dared tell us any different.

Nancy Goodwin had a big group for Bingo Saturday. She is so good to come and give them a treat on the weekend by playing bingo with them when nothing is scheduled. They really appreciate her doing that.

Alice Nunn came to see

Martha Jane Williams and it was perfect “rocking” weather. Those two sat on the porch, rocked and solved all the world problems. It only took them about an hour to get it done too. I guess because they’re both so smart – when you get them together there are very few things those two can’t figure out.

Had a fantastic Mystery Luncheon this week. One of our wonderful Bible study teachers invited us to lunch at her home and since I didn’t tell the residents who it was or where it was going to be it became a “mystery.” They love these – it’s something they look forward to and love trying to figure out. Sandra Angotti had our very first Mystery Lunch and Nancy Weddington had the second. So far, they have not been able to figure them out which makes it even more fun. This one was at the new home of Patricia and Jerry Simmons. Mary Jane Felker (our other Bible teacher) and Dorothy Kolwyck gave her some great help serving every

one. We had 11 residents and four staff go to the luncheon. A wonderful meal and time of fellowship was enjoyed by all. Thank you so much, Patricia and ladies.

Becky Thornton came to visit with Lyde Hamilton this week as did Christy Smith with Martha Jane Williams. Christy had her two sweet grandchildren with her. She had Bolton (a pretty girl) and Fox Smith V. Want to thank the family of Carnell Pepper for the beautiful basket of flowers they brought us from his recent service. It is so nice of them to think of us and brighten our residents’ days even as their own hearts are heavy with sadness.

We had another great treat when Luke Churchill from First Methodist Church came and did a wonderful piano concert of Broadway show tunes for us. Next month his wife is coming to sing with him. How exciting! Thanks so much, Luke.

The week of August 10 through 16 was Elvis Week. Brian Lee Howell came and did a great job presenting an Elvis presentation. All the patients enjoyed this; some even danced. We had family members here also that really enjoyed it.

We extend deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Linda Hughes; she will be truly missed.

The offi cers and members of The Concerned Citizens Organization of Douglass Community express their appreciation to everyone that cooperated and participated in our recent Festival and Homecoming Celebration. Many out of town people were seen around visiting; all the food, vendors, Blood Mobile, everyone that was responsible for whatever part was played, it was a wonderful and enjoyable coming together.

Friday, August 13, the Walker and Bowles families

made contributions and dedicated the Amanda Bowles Walker Banquet Hall with several members of both families present. Mrs. Johnetta Neal made the presentation. The entertainment for the evening was presented in the Eunice C. Sweet Theater with a puppet show, praise dancing, dramatic reading, the Memphis Juke and much more. If you didn’t have the chance to participate this year, begin preparing for next year.

Our meetings for the

organization are held the fi rst Monday evening of each month at 6:30 p.m. except holidays, which are held the following Tuesday. All interested citizens are invited.
