Today’s gospel provides a useful tool for teaching children the meaning of metaphors. Jesus uses two when he tells his disciples (and us) that we are to be salt of the earth and light of the world. Salt and light – simple things, easily accessible to us. In Jesus’ time, however, salt wasn’t just something bought in convenient packages, pure and protected from the elements. It came from natural sources and its chemical composition included more than merely sodium

chloride, which when exposed to water would have been removed, leaving only the crude remains which were not good for anything. Salt was a precious commodity. Light was expressed in the ancient imagery of bushel baskets and lampstands. Jesus tells his disciples that their good deeds should be seen by others, done before others. But the final words of this passage say: “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” As disciples of Christ, we are called to a high standard – not only to do good works, but to do them selflessly as well.

Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home)

Chapter One – What Is Happening to Our Common Home?

V. Global Inequality, continued

The final paragraphs of this section can be hard for us to hear. Pope Francis writes

that approximately a third of all food produced is discarded by a minority of the

world’s population.

Inequity affects not only individuals but entire countries

when industrialized countries export raw materials and

leave behind problems to be faced by poorer countries.

After ceasing their activity and withdrawing, they leave

behind great human and environmental liabilities such as

unemployment, impoverishment of agriculture and local

stock breeding, open pits, riven hills, polluted rivers and a handful of social works

which are no longer sustainable.

The Pope notes that the poorest areas and countries are less capable of adopting new

models for reducing environmental impact because they lack the wherewithal to

develop the necessary processes and to cover their costs. He quotes the United States

Bishops’ comment that greater attention must be given to “the needs of the poor,

the weak and the vulnerable, in a debate often dominated by more powerful interests.”

Why should I donate to the Annual Appeal when I can

support individual Catholic ministries?

As Catholics, we are united in our faith, the sacraments and the good works of the Church. The Annual Appeal is a way to support critical services and ministries of the Church in an effective and meaningful way, and to support ministries larger than any particular parish or agency. Further, there are many ministries supported by the Annual Appeal that do not have a means to receive such supports from direct charitable donations.

Make Me an Instrument

of Your Peace:

A Prayer for Civility

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where uncivil words prevail, show me how to model love.

Help me remember the God-given dignity of all and invite others to do the same.

Show me how to build bridges and not walls and see first what unites us rather than how we diverge.

Let me seek to understand before asking to be understood.

Give me a listening heart filled with empathy and compassion.

May I be clear in sharing my own position and respectful and civil in describing those of others.

Let me never tolerate hateful ideas.

May I invite all to charity and love.

Lord, help me to imitate your compassion and mercy.

Make me an instrument of your peace. Amen.

In Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis calls dialogue “essential” for family life. His guidelines on dialogue are easily applicable to civil society as well. Can you imagine how this election cycle might be different if we challenged ourselves, candidates, political parties, commentators, ourselves, and others to follow Pope Francis’ advice?

1. Recognize the real “importance” and dignity of the other person. Recognize others’ right “to think as they do and to be happy.” Pope Francis challenges us to acknowledge the values of the other’s “deepest concerns” and what he or she is trying to say.

2. Try to understand where the other person is coming from: his or her pain, disappointments, fear, anger, hopes, and dreams.

3. Put yourself in the other’s “shoes;” try to “peer” into his or her heart. This is the starting point for dialogue.

4. Be ready to “listen patiently and attentively to every-thing the other person wants to say.” Dialogue requires the “self-discipline” of waiting until someone is finished speaking before responding. And, it means truly listen-ing to what someone else is saying—not planning a comeback before the other person has even finished speaking.

5. “Keep an open mind.” We need not stick to our own “limited ideas and opinions,” but we must “be prepared to change or expand them.” Our goal is “synthesis” that enriches everyone involved in the dialogue. We don’t seek unity in diversity, Pope Francis says, but rather “reconciled diversity.”

6. Our goal is to advance the common good. Respect and appreciation for the “other” are necessary prerequisites.

Go to: https://www.wearesaltandlight.org/civilize-it to take the pledge of civility

and see who else has taken the pledge!

7. Try not to offend, and don’t vent. We must choose our words carefully, be sensitive to how others feel, and never seek to inflict hurt. We must also avoid a “patronizing” tone, which “only serves to hurt, ridicule, accuse and offend others.”

8. Love everyone. “Love,” Pope Francis writes, “surmounts even the worst barriers.” When we come from a place of love, we can better understand others.

9. Base positions on beliefs and values, not on the desire to “win” an argument or be “proved right.”

10. Pray! True dialogue, Pope Francis reminds us, “can only be the fruit of an interior richness” nourished by our quiet time with God through reading, reflection, prayer, and “openness to the world around us.”

These are challenging words from Pope Francis. How might our own families be different if we took his words to heart? Our parishes? Our neighborhoods? Ourselves? Our society? The current election cycle?

Pope Francis’ vision is a vision of joy-filled love. Let’s share it!

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

Because we feel separate from God, we focus exclusively on ourselves. The ego then separates itself further by investing things and thoughts with a sense of

identity. The ego identifies with things, which really means identifying with thoughts. Our egos are about creating a false identity by being obsessed with the self’s image, its maintenance, and its pleasure. In a word, the ego is utterly self-centered. In this state, we bolster this ego by setting it off from others. One of the ways this works in daily life is when we try to elevate ourselves above others. We do and think things that make us feel superior. We use morality, culture, our intelligence, and even our

relationships to make ourselves feel like we’re better than everyone else. We try to separate ourselves out from the mass of humanity to feel special. We want to feel like we are above everyone else, because we know something they don’t, have a lifestyle they don’t, or believe something they don’t. Of course, this is all ego, a self-designed project to maintain the illusion of superiority.

The way out is to drop the self by going within

and effortlessly resting in nothingness. In other words, we stop thinking and rest in the mystery of God in faith. But since God is not an object to our subject, from whom we believe to be separate, we abide in an interior nothingness where there is no split. Henry Suso, mystic and disciple of Meister Eckhart, elaborates, “There one knows nothing about anything. There nothing is. There is not even a ‘there’…For when a person has been so taken from himself that he knows neither anything about himself nor anything else and is in complete repose in the ground of the eternal nothing, then he is certainly lost.”

Further, a Carmelite nun named Petra gives her

account: “I seemed to be looking within and I saw that I was not there. There was no ‘I.’ I can’t say more than that. I had gone. It wasn’t that I saw or felt God…This was bewildering joy…[her friend Claire responds:] This is really what joy means, isn’t it? Nothing but God—and God apparently not there…so that the whole soul is gift, is surrender, is…‘lived nothingness.’” Self is dropped, God alone remains.

February 9, 2020 page five

In the second reading St. Paul says, “I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” He is addressing the Corinthians, which were a community of people deeply confused about the Gospel. The Corinthians were divided because some boasted of their spiritual gifts. Paul often tells them to stop boasting but only to boast in the Lord. He tells them plainly, “You are inflated with pride” (1 Cor 5:2). He also tells the Corinthians that Jews demand signs, Greeks demand wisdom, but he preaches Christ Crucified. They are not embracing the cross but relying on themselves, getting attached to spiritual experiences, and all this pride is leading to divisive parties that threaten the unity of the Body of Christ.

The Corinthians are attached to spiritual gifts,

to a teacher, and even to their social classes. Attachments are a problem in the Christian community of Corinth. But Paul goes deeper than any individual attachment. He prescribes the cross. And, the cross is about the death of self. Losing the self, as Anthony De Mello states, is “the ultimate way to eliminate all attachments, illusions, and conditionings, the traditional quest of all mystics and the highest achievement of all saints.”

He continues, “The Self is the cause of all our

troubles. We have given it undue importance, have made of it the center of the universe as though everything had to turn round us, and since in fact it doesn’t, we feel hurt and upset…Drop the Self…and you will be free…The ‘my’ adds nothing to the chair; it is a pure convention in our head. And the same goes for my community, my country, my family, my friends…If the ‘my’ adds nothing when added to anything else, it adds nothing either when used on oneself…The ‘I’ is only a label attached to this body-soul complex…That’s all there is to it. The trouble is that the label hides the reality, and, as we usually do, we take the label for what it signifies, the map for the territory, the name for the thing. We give the label an independent existence.”

We create this phantom self, the ego, when we do

not know who we are. The ego functions by a process of separation. We falsely think we are not one with God.

Spotlighting the 5th Grade: The 5th grade enjoyed traveling back in time to the Age of Exploration. Students focused on eight different explorers dating back from the late 1400s to the late 1500s. The focus of this Social Studies chapter was for students to examine what motivated explorers to journey to a new land.

Students researched the following questions: * which countries sent explorers to the Americas? * what were the routes of exploration? * what impact did their journeys have on the new world?

Students reflected on how the exploration of the Americas led to settlements. The fifth grade loved putting themselves into the “shoes” of the explorers and even thought like an explorer.

Come down to the 5th grade classroom and check out the informational posters on each of the eight explorers. This unit expanded the students’ knowledge of the states which will be presented at the Annual Arts & Academics Fair, Wednesday, March 11, 2020, in the Gym. All are welcome!
