Next week's readings: 3rd Sunday of Easter: Acts of the Apostles 3:13‑15, 17‑19

1 John 2:1‑5a Luke 24:35‑48

Most of us can sympathize with poor Thomas. His doubt, featured in today's Gospel, can be experienced by anyone at any time. The other disciples must have doubted Jesus as well, or why were they so afraid and hiding behind locked doors? But it is Thomas who is brave enough to ask for proof that Jesus is who he says he is. Jesus doesn’t berate or scold the disciples when he appeared that evening. He simply greeted them by saying, “Peace be with you.” In a few words Jesus invites all of us into a life of being forgiven and forgiving.

And how was Thomas acting in those days of his doubting?

He remained part of the community, so that he was there when Jesus returned.

He was open to a sign that might give him cause to believe, even though he didn’t know what form that sign might be.

Finally, once Thomas does have faith, he does more than admit he was wrong. He accepts the Resurrection as a reality that will change his priorities and his actions, eventually leading him to die as a martyr for his faith.

We most likely won’t be martyred like Thomas, but sometimes trusting that our doubts can be overcome can lead us to a better life.

In the Words of Pope Francis …

On November 26, 2013, Pope Francis released his first apostolic exhortation, titled Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). It answered a number of evangelization‑related questions, including:

How to foster conversion in the Church in order to make her people more faithful and effective in communicating God’s love to others?

What is the place of missions in the modern world? What are the obstacles believers’ own lives sometimes place in the way of others’ coming to faith?

What are the questions people have about faith?

What attitudes make it hard for people to be receptive to the Christian message? How does Jesus answer the most fundamental questions of human existence?

Is there a difference between evangelizing and proselytizing, between proposing faith and imposing it?

Collège St. Jean Baptiste: The Secondary School in Baradères Throughout April, we reach out to our fellow SJB parishioners for prayers and financial support to aid the students at the only Catholic secondary school (grades 7 through 13) in our Sister Parish, St. Pierre, in Baradères, Haiti. The College of St. Jean Baptiste (CSJB) was co-founded in 1999 by the parishes of St. Pierre and SJB. At CSJB, $225 covers 100% of the cost for an academic education for one student for the entire school year. Your dollar stretches very far at College St. Jean Baptiste! Our donations pay teacher salaries, school personnel salaries, cooks who spend 5 hours each day preparing food for lunch and provide daily hot lunches for all students. Most importantly, donors provide an opportunity almost none of these young people would otherwise have: a quality secondary education.

When we provide for others, it helps them gain greater confidence in God's promises. To love thy neighbor means to treat others the way you want to be treated. These truths are declared so clearly in God’s words. Yes, it will be possible to give them hope because parishioners haven't stopped caring nor loving them.

Envelopes for contributions are now in the pews! Any amount is greatly appreciated. You may put contributions into the basket or leave them at the Parish Office. Also, contributions can be made through your Faith Direct Account. Countless testimonies have reached us over the past 10 years from graduates of CSJB by letters, emails, and videos, telling us how their education at CSJB impacted their lives and helped to prepare them for what they've been doing since graduation. Today we are blessed with the presence of one CSJB alumni, Pierre Richard Pierre. He personally wants to convey his thankfulness, love, and appreciation to our community for supporting him and giving him hope.

Do you know what $9.00 can do in Baradères, Haiti, for our Sisters & Brothers in CSJB? A daily hot lunch at CSJB only costs $9.00 per person per MONTH! There are 330 students at CSJB. Will you provide the love and hope for a month of simple nourishing meals for one or more of our devoted students? Lunch is the only meal many students will receive all day. May God bless SJB and our Sister Parish.

Haiti Presentation - Today! - Self-made Man! Join us April 7 and 8 at all Masses when we welcome Pierre Richard Pierre, a member of the first graduation class at CSJB in 2006. Richard currently lives in New York and has been eager to express his gratitude for all that SJB has done for him. He attends college 4 days a week and works 3 days a week. On Sunday, April 8, after the 12 noon Mass in the Gym, Richard will share his journey from Baradères, Haiti to New York, New York.

What is the Ministry of Hospitality? This is a very important ministry of parishioners who welcome you to Mass. It includes Users and Greeters. While the Ushers meet and help people find seats in the pews, they also assist with the collection and invite families to carry the gifts at the Offertory. Greeters

welcome people at the doors of the Church. If you have not yet been asked to be a Greeter - consider this our invitation for you to warmly welcome your fellow parishioners. What do you have to do? Come to Mass 15 minutes early, stand at one of the doors until Mass is about to begin and say “Hi!” No commitment is required - only a desire to welcome others when you can. A meeting is scheduled for April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Church for all Ministers of Hospitality. Ushers are asked to attend. If you are interested in becoming either an Usher or a Greeter, please come. If you are not able to make the meeting, just introduce yourself to an Usher. This parish has always been hospitable, as our signs on New Hampshire Avenue say, “There is always a place for you at St. John’s.”

Celebrate Earth Day! Beyond a Throwaway Culture: Reduce Waste—Grow Community Earth Day’s theme this year is that of ending plastic pollution. Human beings create plastic waste at an astounding rate. As of 2015 the total was estimated to be around 6300 million metric tons. Of that, a staggering 79% accumulates in landfills and the environment. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic in the world’s oceans than fish!

Join us for a program on how we, both individually and collectively, contribute to the growing problem of single-use plastic—and what we can do about it, Sunday, April 29, 11:45 a.m. in the Large Conference Room of the Kazista Center. For more information, please contact Bill Dinges 301-388-2472, St. John’s Eco-Ministry.

Grow your own food! Suburban farming! You can do it! Interested in learning the basics of backyard gardening/composting? Celebrate Earth Day by joining us Sunday, April 22, 4:00 p.m., 15308 Graaf Pl. Silver Spring, MD. For additional information, please contact Bill Dinges

Mystical Word

L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation

Death is not the end. When Jesus breathes on the gathered disciples, he gives them the Holy Spirit, the very essence of Heaven. After all, Heaven is the divine life and glory. We know precious little about life beyond death, but we can say that death is not the end. The Risen Jesus is the definitive promise from God that death will not be our end. The Gospel assures us that our common end is the Most High, good, and gracious God. In this brief reflection we will ask the big question: What happens when we die? We will reflect all-too-briefly on Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory.

To understand the doctrine of Hell, it is crucial to remember that God’s mercy is the last word in our lives. Divine love is the Eschaton, ancient Greek for “the End.” Therefore, the Church has never and will never pronounce judgment on who is in hell. There’s always the hope that Hell is empty, because God is mercy. Still, the doctrine tries to account for human freedom, specifically the freedom to reject God. Anthony Kelly says, “Hell is a theological symbol of the sinner’s self-chosen ultimate fate,” allowing for the possibility that any person can be forever “frozen in the choice of evil” and self-isolation. Also, because we long for evil to be defeated, Hell represents God’s final judgment on all the evil perpetrated by people through history.

We must stop thinking of Hell in terms of punishment, in metaphors drawn from the criminal justice system, that is, from our prisons. We forget that the fundamental reference point is always the gratuitous mercy of God. We must hope that no one will be damned, but that all will be reconciled with God. The last thing determining the fate of the sinner is not our concept of justice, nor even the possibility of refusing God and being frozen in evil. The first and last reality is the limitless and incomprehensible mercy of God. Even the most isolated human being is never cut off from God.

Even though the Church hopes that nobody goes to Hell, not every body is ready for Heaven. We need a Divine transformation after death, which is Purgatory. It is not a time of punishment nor should we understand Purgatory in an accounting way.

Still, we must be realistic. People die without being fully transformed. Purgatory is about purging the soul of any lingering attachments to anything less than the Mystery of God. Thus, it is a state of growth in love after death rather than a state of paying penalties for one’s sins. We must

interpret Purgatory in light of God’s saving mercy. It refers to our unfinished or untransformed existence being exposed to the living flame of the Spirit. As for Heaven, no words can ever adequately describe Heaven. We can say it is the mystery of consciously being in God’s Presence eternally, but it is a paltry description. Heaven exceeds our ability to know because it is eternal life within the Triune Mystery of God. It is when we enter into the

Trinitarian relationships fully, joyfully, and finally. It is the ultimate state of being in the love of God without end. Catholic tradition calls it the “Beatific Vision.” As such, it is a full and nondual sharing in God’s own knowing. The vision of God is not beholding the Trinity “from outside” as a divine object. To see God is to be in God and to be God all because of God. In Heaven God is all in all (1 Corinthians 15:28). Yet, God does not cease to be Incomprehensible Mystery. Heaven is being caught up in overflowing delight in Divine Mystery, which is “inexhaustibly attractive in its infinite expanse” and is eternally unfolding, as Anthony Kelly says.

The rub is Heaven and Hell begin now! Pope John Paul II said they are states of consciousness we can inhabit right now. This is the significance of Jesus breathing the Spirit upon the disciples. We don’t try to get to Heaven, rather Heaven comes to us! Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. There is no need, then, to try to get to Heaven. Heaven is already here! God is with us, within us, and one with us right here and right now. The key to living Heaven here and now is to do what Jesus says. He says to receive the Spirit. Are we open to Heaven-consciousness? Are we desiring God? Do we consciously choose to be present in God through faith? If we don’t, we may come to see how Hell is a state of mind, too. If we do, we can discover just how true it is that Heaven is available this very moment.

SJB CYO Softball SJB Softball registration is now open for SJB students and parishioners. SJB Athletics participates in CYO Girls Softball for 10U, 12U, and 14U. This season, SJB Athletics is partnering with Burtonsville Athletic Association (BAA) to field SJB baseball teams for Grades K-8. Learn more and register at www.sjbathletics.org.

Introducing SJB FUTSAL!

What is Futsal? 5 on 5 indoor ⚽ and it's happening this spring at SJB Gym. Boys and girls, Gr 3-8. Learn more and register at www.sjbathletics.org or contact Emerson Branch [email protected].

CYO Track and Field CYO offers Track and Field as a spring sport. SJB Athletics does not have a program, but interested SJB parishioners and students should consider competing for our neighboring parish, St. Andrew the Apostle, which has a strong track and field program and welcomes SJB Jaguars. Please contact the following for more information: Hugh McKenna – [email protected] or David Luksic –[email protected] or visit standrewapostle.org/ministry/.

SJB CYO Baseball This season CYO has determined, based on parish feedback, that there will not be enough teams to form a league, so SJB will not offer CYO baseball this year. Our recommendation is that you sign-up your players with BAA’s recreational baseball league which is very comparable and close by. When registering, add SJB as the carpool and team preference and BAA will make every attempt to place SJB players together which is a fun experience for the players and a logistical convenience for coaches and parents. Contact BAA Baseball Director, Molly Surden at [email protected].

SJB Spring Intramurals Registration is now open for Pre-K thru 1st Grade. Tee-Ball (Friday evenings) and Little Feet Soccer (Saturday mornings). Starting in Early April. To learn more and register, please visit www.sjbathletics.org.

SJB School News

Exciting things are happening in the SJB Library. Last fall, students utilized “Makerspaces,” which is a STEM-inspired program to encourage students’ creativity through constructing new ideas and inventions. After that, poetry filled the

library and students recited poems from some of the greats such as Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Shel Silverstein and Edgar Allan Poe. Black History Month was observed through studies of influential people such as the Tuskegee Airmen. Then last week, the lower grades took part in an Easter egg hunt in the library. The Easter eggs contained no candy, but objects that represented Holy Week facts and observed Jesus’ death and resurrection. Of course, there is a lot of reading going on in the library, too, and students are checking out books to enjoy in the classroom or at home.
