TRANSCRIPT
Sunday, March 18, 2018 Lent: 5th Sunday This week’s readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34 Hebrews 5:7-9 John 12:20-33
Today’s readings speak dramatically of the cost of discipleship. Jesus learns what it means to follow the Father’s will completely from what he suffers. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of his suffering death, using the image of the seed which must die in order to produce fruit.
It’s common to believe that centuries ago the blood of martyrs was the seed for Christians. Pope Francis, however, reminds us that today there are more martyrs than in the first centuries, and they, with their martyrdom, their witness, their suffering, even by offering of their lives, sow seeds for Christians now and in the future. (Pope Francis’ homily at Casa Santa Marta, January 30, 2017)
Next week’s readings: Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion Isaiah 50:4-7 Philippians 2:6-11 Mark 14–15:47
Lent - 2018
Celebrating the Triduum From sundown Holy Thursday (March 29) until sundown Easter Sunday (April 1), Christians remember and celebrate the Paschal Mystery – the core of our faith.
At the Holy Thursday Eucharist, the Church is already drawn into the whole event of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Good Friday celebration of the Lord’s passion is austere but never sad, for the risen Lord already reigns triumphant. On Holy Saturday the Church waits for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection and its own at the Easter Vigil, when the Spirit hovers over the waters of the font and the community of faith drinks deeply again of the mystery of Jesus’ passage from death to life. Easter Sunday continues the celebration that began the night before, as we name
ourselves an “Easter people” and “Alleluia” is our song.

Cordially Invite You
to
Living Stations of the Cross Friday, March 23, 7:30 p.m. in the Church
The Living Stations at St. John’s is a beautiful tradition. All are invited to make it part of their celebration of Lent
and Triduum. The Living Stations is less of a passion- play and more of a contemplative
meditation using the student performers as a tableau. The use of light and dark is a crucial component of establishing the
liturgical environment and we are hopeful that we will be able to help those in the
congregation to enter into a deeper, more solemn meditation on the Stations.
Bereavement Support
Are you grieving? The Bereavement Support Group will meet on Monday, March 26, at 7:00 p.m. in the Large Conference Room of the Kazista Center. All are welcome. For further information, please call Maryanne Dulski, 301-384-1743 or Delores Ritter, 301-384-5885.
Easter Reception
The Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, March 31, 8:00 p.m. will be followed by a joyful party in the Gym. Please come and, if you can, bring some finger foods or dessert to share. Items may be placed in the Gym/
Kitchen anytime on Holy Saturday.
Social Concerns

Share the Cross - Lent 2018 The Share the Cross tradition has spanned over two decades at SJB. Each year, people choose to take this special journey with Our Lord. Whether you chose to donate items to those in need, or to participate in the Supper Talks, say a prayer, or other Lenten activities, know that your journey has helped numerous unknown people within our community. All donated items are collected this weekend, March 17 and 18, in the Gym. If you are unable to bring your donated items in this weekend, you may drop them off at the Kazista Center at your convenience during the week. Thank you again for your commitment to help our brothers and sisters in greatest need.

2018 LENTEN SUPPER TALKS
Come to the Lyon Center to observe the Lenten fast by sharing a simple supper of soup and bread. During the meal, we listen to a presentation on a topic related to the social concerns of our Church. This year's theme is "Finding Jesus Everywhere." Our goal
this year is to increase our members' commitment to scripture, Catholic social teaching, and action. Each evening begins with a free, simple supper of soup and bread at 6:00 p.m. The presentation starts about 6:20 p.m. followed questions ending by 7:30 p.m. The TASSC presentation had to be rescheduled because of the inclement weather. They will speak at the March 23 Lenten Supper Talks.
March 23: TASSC Truth Speaker event "Truth Speakers" are survivors of torture who have chosen to talk publicly about their experiences to educate others and to further the fight for the abolition of torture. They bravely speak out, so their stories can serve to spread awareness and to advocate on the behalf of those who have been silenced. TASSC (Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition) is a coalition of torture survivors and volunteers, representing countries and ethnic groups throughout all parts of the world. The mission of TASSC is to end the practice of torture and to support survivors as they empower themselves, their families and communities. For almost 20 years, TASSC has been dedicated to ending the practice of torture worldwide and empowering torture survivors and their families. Most TASSC survivors are in the United States legally, they go through all the proper channels in applying for asylum in the United States. TASSC is committed to make survivors feel welcome and safe when they come through their doors, and to continue delivering outstanding services.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Community began a relationship with our brothers and sisters of St. Pierre’s Parish in Baradères in 1994. Since the inception of the Sister Parish Program at St. John’s, we have been doing many things to answer some of the needs of our Catholic brethren who live so far away, but whom we keep close to our hearts.
The primary focus of our Sister Parish Program is the children, for we believe the children are the future of Haiti. We have taken steps to improve their nutrition and ultimately their health. We have provided educational tools they can use to become significant contributing members and leaders in their community. We have provided religious support in the form of prayer, materials, and religious goods.
Mystical Word
L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation
Jesus of Nazareth was crucified. To all observers he lost. His disciples abandoned him and his messianic dream of the reign of God failed to appear. When the Cubs kept losing they were the butt of many jokes. Cubs fans, surely, felt humiliated by their team. The Gospel of Jesus Christ has much more in common with the losing Chicago Cubs than with the winning Chicago Cubs, especially when they won based on their own strength and skill. The Gospel is about God being victorious but winning in a way we would never expect and may even loathe. God wins in Jesus crucified. Jesus dies. His mission seems to die with him, but God raises him up.
We still don’t really get the Gospel. We think life is about winning, succeeding, and achieving. Yet, Jesus says that the condition for following him is to hate our lives in this world. “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.” We are called to follow the crucified, naked, bleeding, losing, humiliated, and poor Christ into the depths of nothingness. The Gospel is about both Jesus and his followers being reduced to nothing to realize and reveal the God of gratuitous mercy. It is about neither achievement nor triumph.
There is an old Franciscan saying, “Nudus nudum Christum sequi.” It means, “Naked I follow the naked Christ.” We must follow Jesus into nakedness, weakness, insult, humiliation, and suffering. When we experience these realities in God, there lies freedom. It is a way of thorough and even severe letting go. This is how we hate our lives in this world. We renounce the values of this
world for the values of the Gospel. We stop reciting the story of conventional American culture and start telling the story of Jesus crucified and his divine path of nothingness.
We have to be honest. We want to win. We want to succeed. We want to be strong. Who wouldn’t? These
desires, though, are traps. The Gospel promises no worldly success and challenges us to surrender all our strength to be weak. Jesus tells us to expect persecution and humiliation. He says we are blessed when people insult us and utter every kind of evil (falsely) against us because of him (Mt 5:11). He tells us to rejoice when that happens! When was the last time you rejoiced to be insulted for Christ’s sake? This is weakness for its own sake, though. We embrace weakness to rely on God alone. Meister Eckhart says, “The single action of the spiritual life is to reduce self to nothingness.” This requires practice every single day, and
even every single moment of every single day. We have to practice letting go, losing, as much as possible. Neurologically, reacting to something, especially reacting negatively, reinforces the neural pathways to the amygdala, which is the most primitive part of our brains controlling fight or flight responses. Reaction is a typical ego game. Letting go, however, reinforces neural pathways to the most evolved parts of the brain. Research shows that long-term meditators have smaller amygdalas. Even biology confirms those who lose and let go are freer and more joyful. Practicing the Gospel path of being reduced to nothingness leads to greater freedom and joy, often amidst humiliation and suffering. Again, this is not the way regular society wants to live, but it is the only way to liberation. So, with every choice, the Gospel challenges us to let go. With every choice, Jesus commands us to die to self and hate our lives in this world, for this world is passing away.

Share in Hope by Feeding the Poor Thank you to all who generously responded to Fr. David’s invitation to feed those most in need within our community. 95% of the bags were distributed at the Masses last weekend resulting in food donations arriving as early as last Monday. The SJB donations were doubled from last year. We delivered over 400 boxes and bags of non-perishable food to the St. Camillus and the Midcounty United Ministries (MUM) Food Pantries. We examined each donation to ensure the expiration date had not passed, sorted and packed each box or bag with like items, loaded them into the vans and other vehicles, handed them off to volunteers at St. Camillus who sorted and shelved the items in their food pantry. Any food
that was not delivered to St. Camillus was donated to the Midcounty United Ministries food pantry. MUM's pantry is dedicated to the memory of Montgomery County Police Capt. Joseph Mattingly Jr., who strongly supported community service in the mid-county area before his death in 2003. Additionally, MUM operates a mobile food pantry serving the community on Sundays. Thank you to those who helped sort, pack, and deliver the food. We had over 20 volunteers with ten cars transporting the food. This year our Indonesian Community, which draws from throughout the county, participated with food donations. If you forgot to bring in your food donation, it is never too late.

Winter has been fun in kindergarten. We learned all about what animals do in winter. We read the folktale The Mitten by Jan Brett and also the version by Alvin Tresselt. After reading the two different versions, we
developed a Venn diagram to compare the two authors. There were celebrations too. Valentine's Day and the 100th Day of School were both on the same day! It was a busy week. We also began to decorate our class' Lenten Cross with all of the good deeds we are doing to prepare for the Risen Lord! Spring will be here soon and the most special holiday of all, Easter!
