BUS PICK UP LOCATIONS

When we take a motor coach as our means of transportation to various activities, we use three pick-up locations. We have started using two pick-up locations, when possible, on each trip. This is one way to accommodate most of you. so you don’t have to travel as far. It depends on the direction of the trip. When a travel company plans the trip, we don’t use two pick-up locations if it will increase the cost for the coach. The location of the pick-up for each activity will be stated in the respective descriptions. At the present time we are using the following pickup locations. Note: On each activity, the arrival times are approximate.

.EAST: Taylor Square Shopping Center on Rt. 256 North. Park in the back of the Fifth Third Bank at 2883 Taylor Rd. You will be in front of Marshall’s & JoAnn Fabrics. Deadline: Monday, February 13, 2017 Reservation: Mail check and form to Jeanne Stoll We welcome Steve Ball to our gathering during the month of Lincoln’s birthday. You may remember Steve when he recently performed songs and talked about the life of Stephen Foster at the Worthington Inn. Steve Ball is a musician from Columbus Ohio specializing in the music of the American Civil War. His presentation features tunes starting in the mid 1850's that would become important regarding the climate of the country before the war began in 1861. As the presentation unfolds, there will be patriotic songs cherished by both sides, a sing along, and finally tunes that reflected the melancholy the war would produce. The history and influence of each tune is shared, as well as the progress of the war itself. Steve has built a collection of Civil War era guitars as well as a large collection of Civil War era sheet music. It is easy to see why Steve developed an interest in the Civil War. Steve’s Great-Great-Grandfather was a Union Private by the name of William Tyler Butts. William enlisted in the Union Army in 1861, in the

newly formed 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Private Butts saw action in the many Civil War battles. Private Butts was with General Sherman on the drive to take Atlanta. He was shot at Kennesaw Mountain Georgia and was badly wounded in the left leg but it didn’t stop him from participating in the famous "March to the Sea”.

In 1773 Phillis Wheatley was the first African American poet to publish a volume of poems. The name of her book was Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. Phillis was purchased as a personal slave by Susannah Wheatley when she was just 8. She came from Senegal but learned to speak and write English very quickly. By the age of 12, Phillis was reading Greek and Latin classics and difficult passages from the Bible. At the age of 14, she wrote her first poem. At the age of 20, Phillis accompanied her master, Nathaniel Wheatley, to London in part for her health, but also because Susannah believed she would have a better chance publishing her poetry there. She had audiences with many of the English elite. In 1778, Wheatley was legally freed from slavery by the terms of her master's will after he passed. Three months later, Phillis Wheatley married John Peters, a free black grocer. They struggled with poor living conditions and the deaths of two babies. Her long physical frailty, hard life and poverty led to her death at age 31. We will listen to the poems and hear from Phillis in her own words portrayed by Sandra Quick, a graduate of West High School and a retired teacher and principal of the Columbus City Schools.
