S S E “T ” 

   We celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter and we are close to observing the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord that will take place on Thursday. In the gospel reading for this Sunday we hear Jesus preparing his disciples for his Ascension that will soon take place and he promises them that he will not leave them nor us, orphans: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always” (John 14:16). The power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells along side of us in the midst of adversity, is a great source of encouragement. The gi of the Holy Spirit gives us the courage that we need to live our faith. The Lord Jesus promises the outpouring of the Holy Spirit to enliven the hearts of his followers and to teach them the truth. As the risen Lord from the first stood in the midst of his disciples following his passion, death, and resurrec on from the dead, he has me and me again assured them of the gi of “peace.” Now he indicates that the gi of this peace will be assured by the gi of the Holy Spirit and Jesus tells his disciples that signs of his presence among them will be clear: “On the day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you” (14:20). In the closing of this week’s passage from John’s gospel, Jesus directs the disciples to be faithful to his teaching and to make his way of life their own: “Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me” (14:21). Jesus wants his disciples to live his way of selflessness and self-emptying so that they are faithful to the will of the Father just as he is. The path of discipleship is a difficult road to walk and many mes it will cause sorrow and disappointment. In our second reading from the first Le er of Saint Peter the early Chris an community is encouraged to be faithful to Christ even when it is the cause of hardship and persecu on: “Always be ready to give an explana on to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame” (1 Peter 3:15-16). Because of the gi of Christ’s life that we share in we do have a cause for hope and there is nothing that should distract us from holding fast to our hope in the Lord Jesus. The peace that Christ gives us allows us to live with confidence and courage even in the face of adversity. Some mes when we meet people who are nega ve and complaining we can absorb their own way of looking at life; but the Chris an message is not nega ve nor is it content to complain and brood on real or imagined slights and hurts. When we “sanc fy Christ as Lord” our hearts, (1 Peter 3:15) we do our best to be a presence of peace and joy for others and we serve to help build up Christ’s body, the Church. This Sunday, as we con nue our readings from the Acts of the Apostles, we find Philip preaching to the crowds in Samaria where he “proclaimed the Christ to them” (Acts 8:5). The result of Philip’s preaching: “There was great joy in that city” (Acts 8:8). The presence of the Holy Spirit among us and our faithfulness to the gospel is indicated by joy. In a recent medita on at daily Mass, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted, according to the Va can News Service Summary:

We too ‘are afraid of joy’ and we tell ourselves that ‘it is be er to think: yes, God exists, but he is out there. Jesus is risen, he is out there!’ We tell ourselves: let’s keep ‘a li le distance ... we are afraid of Jesus’ closeness because this brings us joy.’ This a tude also explains why there are so many ‘funeral Chris ans’ for whom ‘life seems like a con nual funeral.’ Chris ans who ‘prefer sadness and not joy; they move be er, not in the light of joy, but in the shadows.’ Just ‘like those animals,’ the Pope said, ‘that manage to go out at night but don’t see anything in the light of day. Like bats! And with a li le bit of humor we can say that they are “bat Chris ans” who prefer the shadows to the light of the presence of the Lord’.

‘We are afraid of joy,’ the Pope repeated, ‘and Jesus, by his Resurrec on, gives us joy: the joy of being Chris ans, the joy of following him closely, the joy of taking the road of the bea tudes, the joy of being with him.’ Instead, ‘many mes we are either startled when this joy comes to meet us, or we are full of fear: either we believe we are seeing a ghost, or we think that Jesus is a way of ac ng;’ indeed, we say ‘we are Chris ans and we have to do it this way!’ Rather, we should ask ourselves: ‘Do you speak with Jesus? Do you tell him: Jesus, I believe that you are alive, that you are risen, that you are close to me, that you will not abandon me?’ This is the ‘dialogue with Jesus’ which is proper to the Chris an life and is enlivened by the knowledge that ‘Jesus is always with us, he is always with our problems, with our struggles and with our good works.’ Therefore, the Pope reiterated, we need to overcome ‘the fear of joy;’ we need to think of the many

mes that ‘we are not joyful because we are afraid.’ Like the disciples who ‘were startled and frightened’ by the mystery of the Cross. This was the cause of their fear. ‘In my homeland,’ Pope Francis said, ‘there is a saying that goes like this: when someone gets burned by boiling milk, he cries when he sees the cow.’ The disciples, who were ‘burned by the drama of the Cross, said: no, let’s stop here! He is in heaven, that’s excellent, he is risen, but may he not come back again because we can’t handle it!’ Pope Francis concluded his medita on asking the Lord that he ‘may do for us all what he did for the disciples who were afraid of joy: open our minds.’ Indeed, in the Gospel we read: ‘He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.’ The Pope therefore expressed his hope ‘that the Lord may open our minds and make us understand that he is a living reality, that he has a body, that he is with us and that he accompanies us, that he has conquered: let us ask the Lord for the grace not to be afraid of joy.’

It is so temp ng to give in to those who peddle gloom and doom and tragedy. Life is difficult and so we can

easily give in to the tempta on to let it overwhelm us. It is easy to cri cize others, dream of the days of the past where things take on the dreamy glow of perfec on and it is invi ng to ponder the future where things will surely be different. But we live in the here and now, in this moment. Our voca on is to be Christ’s presence to others now and to be a force for good and peace now. We will soon celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. We pray that the Holy Spirit will revitalize our sense of mission and our commitment to be instruments of peace.

Bishop Serratelli has assigned Deacon Juan Fernando to our parish as a transi onal deacon. Deacon Juan Fernando will be with us during the summer and through the year as his schedule at the seminary permits. We con nue to pray for Deacon Juan Fernando and promise to con nue to encourage him with our prayers as he con nues his journey toward ordina on to the Priesthood in 2018.

This year seems to be flying by so quickly. Before we know it, we will begin our faith forma on program again. We are s ll in need of catechists for our faith forma on program. You do not need to be a formal educator to become a teacher of our faith. All catechists are provided with materials and much support to facilitate the lessons and ac vi es. Each classroom is addi onally staffed with at least one classroom assistant. Once again, thank you for considering this important ministry and becoming involved. C ’ L W Each week at the 9:30 Sunday morning Mass our ministers of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word help to lead our children in breaking open God’s word so that it is comprehensible to them. Thank you to all of our CLOW ministers! Last week we celebrated the final Children’s Liturgy of the Word. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word will begin again a er Labor Day. Thank you for all of those who prepare for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word each week and celebrate it with the young people of our parish.

The work of those who make our annual Tricky Tray such a success is absolutely extraordinary; this year’s Tricky Tray was even more successful than last year. Each year the Tricky Tray Commi ee makes the event more successful than the year before. What tremendous work and devo on that helps our parish in so many ways! I want to take another opportunity to thank all of those who spent month upon month, week upon week, countless hours, in preparing for our Tricky Tray and then actually making it happen the night of the event. Our parish relies upon the Tricky Tray to remain on a stable financial foo ng. Please consider being part of the Tricky Tray Commi ee so that the burden is lightened for those who do the back breaking work that it requires. Thank you to all of those who made our annual Tricky Tray, held at The Bethwood on May 3rd, such a success. I want to especially thank all of the members of the Tricky Tray Commi ee for their hard work and dedica on to this important parish fundraiser. A special word of thanks to our Confirma on candidates for helping us to distribute the prizes won to the recipients on the night of the Tricky Tray. They did a great job! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast

Please come to the Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 8:00-11:00 AM in St. Francis Hall. Cost is $6.00 for adults, and $4.00 for children under age 12. Your donation benefits our vocation sponsorships.

The menu: pancakes (all you can eat), bacon, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, juice and water. Come anytime between 8:00 and 11:00 AM on the 4th of June. Please be sure to bring your family, friends and neighbors.

Communion of a child even happier by donating gently used First Holy Communion dresses and suits for little girls and boys in need on their special day. The gently used dresses and suits are used for families at the Father English Center in Paterson. Your help is

greatly needed. If you have a dress or suit that you would like to donate, please hang it on the rack near the side entrance to the church (entrance near right side of the stage). Thank you so much for your generosity!
