This is not going to sound very pretty, but here it goes:As you may tell from my picture, I have long hair. Theaverage person loses 100 strands of hair per day, but

I would venture to guess that I lose about five times thatmuch. I find it on everything, and when I vacuum, there ismore hair than dirt in the vacuum bag.

But what’s even worse is when my hair clogs the tubdrain. When I first moved into an apartment, every time Ishowered, the tub would fill with water. I plunged the drain, and that didn’t work. I tried every type of homemade andstore-bought drain cleaner you could imagine. Finally, I calledour maintenance man and he taught me a simple trick tounclog the drain.

Remove the tub drain stopper. If the stopper is coveredin hair, cleaning it may solve the problem. Cut the hair outusing scissors from your tool kit. Please don’t use thekitchen scissors.

Once you get the hairs out of the way, run the water tosee if it goes down properly. If not, you may need to snakethe drain. To do this, make sure to use a thin cable. You alsowant to be sure that you are using the right size and typeof snake. Ask the people at a hardware store for assistanceand tell them what you will be using the snake for andwhere you plan to use it.

Once you’ve got the correct cable, remove the tubstrainer and insert the snake into the drain line. Push untilyou reach the blockage. Twist the snake handle clockwise tohook the clog, pulling up slighting periodically to check ifyou’ve captured it. Push down with the snake until youbreak it up, turning the handle clockwise as you push. Youwill know you’ve broken it up when you can puncturethrough the other end. Pull the clog out slowly, and then dis-

pose of it in a bucket or trash can. Flush with cold water. Keep in mind that these are not permanent solutions to

every clogged drain. I still have to clean the hair out of thedrain stopper every now and then, but since learning thesetricks I haven’t once had to use drain cleaner. As always, con-sult a professional if you’re ever in doubt.

When it comes to servicing theroofing needs of Hawaii home-owners, R.S. Toyama Roofing

Service Inc. has it covered. The company has been in business for

more than 30 years and has gained an envi-able reputation for providing quality crafts-manship at competitive prices. In fact, owner Raymond Toyama still does everyfree estimate himself, no matter where onOahu the home may be.

R.S. Toyama’s work encompasses resi-dences, carports, lanai, sheds, extensionsand, in some cases, commercial roofing.

If you live in an area with an association,Toyama advised getting all your permits inorder before beginning your project, asmost associations will have a listing of colorchoices, materials, etc. that must be fol-lowed.

“We can gladly bring out samples tomake your selection,” Toyama said.

With a crew of six highly skilled, hard-working young roofers, R.S. Toyama offers aseven-year workmanship warranty — themaximum allowed by Hawaii state law —on all its projects, in addition to the manu-facturer’s material warranty, which usuallylasts 20-30 years.

“We want (our customers) to feel theycan trust us to do the job required to thebest of our abilities, and to do that job withthe least amount of interruption of theirnormal lives,” said Toyama, who founded hiscompany in 1979 after honing his skills in

the roofing trade for 10 years under hisfather-in-law, Nobu Kageura.

With years of experience in the roofingtrade, Toyama knows roofing can be a noisyand dusty process, so the company tries tokeep clients informed not just for theirbenefit, but for their neighbors’ peace-of-mind as well.

Over the last several months, the com-pany has witnessed a trend in homeownersopting to install PV (Photovoltaic-SolarEnergy) systems on their roofs. These sys-tems will last for 25 to 30 years, so be sureyour roofing is in good condition beforeinstalling PV, as it will cost extra money andtime to take down a solar system once you

have it mounted. Also, if you do decide to install a PV sys-

tem and you need to re-roof your home, itcan get costly. To save time and money,Toyama suggested re-roofing the portionthat the PV system will be place on first. Then, if the condition of your roof permits, you can re-roof the rest of the residence ata later date.

“No job is too small or large,” Toyamasaid.

During this holiday season, R.S. Toyamawould like to thank all of its current andpast clients, some of whom have given thecompany much-appreciated repeat busi-ness over the years.

“Thank you for your support throughoutthe years,” Toyama said. “We wish ourclients and their families a safe and wonder-ful holiday season!”

Planning for the holidays is a busy andjoyful time. But all of the decorations, extra electrical cords and the parade

of people going in and out of your home callfor more safety precautions to help youmake this holiday season safe and happy foryou and your family.

Here’s a checklist for home holiday safety: • Ask a friend or neighbor to watch yourhouse and take in your newspaper and mailif you plan to spend the holidays away fromhome. Put lights throughout the house ontimers to turn them on and off in your nor-mal living pattern. • If you display a live Christmas tree or livegreenery, select the freshest possible. A moisttree is less likely to catch fire. Look for atrunk sticky with sap and for green needlesthat bend and are secure on the branches. • When using a live Christmas tree, cut thebase at a 45-degree angle. Place it in a con-tainer with water and always keep the water

level above the cut.• Place trees a safe distance from stoves, radiators, vents, fireplaces and any other heatsource that may dry the tree. Inspect thetree for dryness daily. • Inspect all holiday light wiring. Defective, worn or frayed electrical wiring should bethrown away. Check for the UL label onlights. Also, be sure to use fixtures specificallydesigned for outdoor use if you decorate

your house, trees or yard.• Use no more than three light sets on anyone extension cord. Also, don't run electricalcords under rugs. Be sure all lights are turnedoff before you go to bed or leave the house.• Place candles and other open flames awayfrom decorations. Never leave burning can-dles unattended and always supervise chil-dren when burning candles.• Keep a fire extinguisher near your

Christmas tree. Make sure your family has afire emergency escape plan. In case of fire, leave your home and call for help from aneighbor’s home. • When buying artificial decorations, checkfor “flameproof” or “fire-retardant” qualities.• Never burn wrapping paper in a fireplaceor wood stove. Certain ink pigments reactwith heat and create airborne particulatesthat are dangerous to inhale. Also don’t burnevergreens, they could flare out of controland send flames and smoke into your house. • Cooking is a leading cause of home firesand home-fire injuries. When you cook, besure to wear clothes that fit close to thebody so they won't be ignited by hot burn-ers. Do not leave items cooking on the stoveand be sure that pot handles are turned in.

The decorations around your house, lights, gifts, music and the presence of lovedones make the holiday season festive andfun, and with the proper precautions, safe.

It’s no secret that Hawaii’s solar industryhas been booming for the past few years, but homeowners and industry profes-

sionals have recently expressed concern overthe sudden changes in state tax rules that willdrastically reduce the amount of tax creditsavailable for Hawaii homeowners. If you havebeen considering reducing your electric billwith solar, but are worried you’ve missed thestate tax credit opportunities because ofchanges being implemented in 2013, don’tpanic: Sunetric has a solution.

“The department of taxation issued a newadministrative ruling to change the definitionsof the state tax incentives,” shared chief oper-ating officer Aaron Kirk.

The new qualifications to receive state taxcredits are now based on kilowatts installed. This means you may not be entitled toreceive as much in return from the state asyou may have in 2012.

“This can result in up to a 50 percent cutin tax credits from the state level, just byaltering the definition,” said Kirk. “Sunetricfeels that the tax change decision wasmade too quickly and without looking atthe impact it’s going to have on the solarindustry, on Hawaii’s clean energy initiative

or to Hawaii homeowners.”“This tax code change will dramatically

affect the ease in w hich local homeownerscan put solar on their homes,” said Kirk.

Kirk predicts that there may not be anyopenings for installations before the end ofthe year, unless you want to turn to drasticmeasures and go with someone who can’tguarantee the same quality of service.

But don’t be discouraged and lose faithin turning your roof into a personalpower plant.

To continue to provide its reputable serv-ice to customers, and to assist homeownersthat won’t be able to install photovoltaicbefore the end of the year, Sunetric has foundexclusive means to cover the loss of taxrebates for homeowners.

“We have access to an exclusive pro-gram that allows us to honor nearly all ofthe same tax credits that were available in2012 for our new customers,” shared Kirk.“We’ve worked hard to find a way to givehomeowners a little bit more time to get

in, and benefit from the better tax rebatesthat were available before this drastic cutwas made.”

However, Kirk noted that Sunetric will onlybe able to extend the 2012 tax credits for alimited time.

“The resources of this program are limitedand are allocated only to Sunetric customers. We are doing everything we can to extend itas long as possible and give as many localhomeowners the benefits that these taxincentives provided before the ruleschanged,” said Kirk. And choosing to trust inSunetric also means knowing that you’ll getmore than your money’s worth with top-tier,U.S.-made photovoltaic panels.

To ensure that you’ll be able to take partin Sunetric’s exclusive offer, visitsunetric.com or call the company’s mainoffices at 262-6600.

Homeowners have known for yearsthat remodeling a kitchen or bath-room can recoup as much or

more than the cost of the job. Recent stud-ies in Honolulu have shown that replacingan old, worn garage door can recoup thehomeowner 120 percent to 180 percentof the job cost depending on the qualityand features of the garage door. This isbecause of the enhanced curb appeal of aproperty with a new and attractive garagedoor. The garage door is the largest movingpart of the house, and for most properties,it’s the first or second part of the houseone sees from the street.

Garage doors are available in galva-nized steel, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum andwood. Most doors are available one-sided, insulated or two-sided with insula-tion. Even a modest, new one-sidedgarage door will allow the homeowner torecoup well above the door cost inadded resale value to the house. Higherpriced specialty aluminum and wooddoors will add a modest amount to thehouse value above the cost of the doorand well in excess of the cost recoupedby other home renovation projects.

Servco Raynor offers a wide variety ofdoor styles and sizes in all materials.Wood door construction for the ArborShore product line utilizes vertical grainlumber, fully matured Alaskan WesternRed Cedar and uniform wood-tone con-sistency, all with lead times as short asfour weeks. No other manufacturer candeliver the level of quality Raynor can.

ArborShore offers a wide variety ofoptions in both Swing-Out and Bi-Folddesigns, as well as several hardware andglass options to choose from.

ArborShore door sections are war-ranted to the original purchaser for fiveyears. Doors ordered with the DeluxeStain option — which features a secondclear top coat — receive an additionalyear for a total of six years. Eight differentstain options are available. All otherServco Raynor doors have limited life-time warranties for as long as the originalpurchaser owns the home. A wide varietyof operators and accessories are availablefor all of these doors, including batteryback-up.

QUESTION: There seems to be a para-noid theme in feng shui. Furniture is placed sono one can sneak up, and mirrors are hung soone can see what might approach from one’s“blind side.” Is this an archaic carryover fromthe warring states times?

Feng shui is an ancient art, spanningthousands of years. Originally, peopleused it to find auspicious sites, harness

“good energy,” and bring balance and har-mony to anything energetically disruptive inthe environment. The belief was that if youlived and operated in an energeticallysound place, your life and/or businesswould have the best chance to flourishwith ease, and opportunities would bemaximized. Over the course of history, those in high positions, such as emperorsand political leaders, used feng shui to max-imize their status and maintain their powerover people.

Of course, those in power usually expe-rience opposition and have enemies whowant to overtake them. So, part of the fengshui philosophy emphasizes the impor-tance of situating yourself in the most pow-erful position within the environment sothat you can see all activity — including anyenemies who might try to surreptitiouslyeliminate your carefully harnessed power.

The power positionThe power position, also known as the

“commanding position,” is a feng shui con-cept that helps you place yourself in themost powerful position in your home. Thisis to ensure you have the greatest com-mand of a room — usually against a wall sothat you can see all the entrances andnothing can happen behind your back. Thisallows you to be the focus of attentionwhile enabling you to easily observe allactivity in the room without craning orturning your neck.

By choosing to place yourself in thepower position, you gain an advantage in

sleeping, negotiations, business activitiesand peace of mind.

Safety and securityAn added benefit of positioning yourself in

the power position is a greater subconscioussense of safety and security and less anxiety.

We all have an instinctive need to main-tain visible control over our environment. We are most comfortable when we knowon many levels that no one can sneak upand surprise us. Think of how it feels whenyou are engaged in something and, without

your knowledge, someone is behind you, watching what you are doing. It feels disem-powering.

In feng shui, if you are positioned so thatyou cannot see all the activity that entersand leaves a room or occurs behind you, mirrors are used to reflect that activity andto bring into view anything out of sight.

Place yourself in the best positionHere are a few things to be aware of

when you want to put yourself in the bestposition in any room, whether it’s yourhome or office:

• Make sure you can see the door easilyfrom where you are sitting, sleeping orstanding so that you are in the best posi-tion to deal with whatever might comethrough the door. If this is not possible, place a mirror where it will give you a bet-ter view. For example, if you sit at a deskthat can’t be moved, put a “rear-view” mir-ror on your computer monitor so that youcan easily see behind you. I like to affix a 2-or 3-inch round mirror with self-stick tapeto the upper corner of my computerscreen. You can purchase such mirrors atany auto supply shop.• The key is to always give yourself thewidest view of the room without being indirect line of the doorway. You know youare in the “power spot” when you feelcomfortably in charge of the room.

The next time you watch a movie scenewith a powerful person sitting in a restaurant, notice where he or she is sitting. It will be farfrom the door, usually across the room fromthe entry, with his or her back to a wall.

This concept for positioning is powerful,a strong metaphor for being in control ofyour world. How you position yourself in aroom has a relationship to how you posi-tion yourself in life which, in turn, has aneffect on how empowered you are and, toa degree, how successful you are.

The holiday season doesn’t have to always involve thesame old, same old when it comes to decoratingyour home.

Take a few ideas from John Griffith. As the lead visualmerchandiser for Replacements Ltd., he spends the entireyear scouting and developing innovative tips and techniquesto deck the halls and trim the perfect tree. So far, Griffith’steam has adorned nearly a dozen trees throughout thecompany’s retail store. Each tannenbaum is a story in itself, defined by color, style and unique looks created by combin-ing ornaments with what some might consider nontradi-tional trimmings.

“So many people settle for simply hanging ornaments ontheir trees, but there is so much more you can do by addingfillers that really reflect your own personal taste and style,”said Griffith. “Mixing in ribbon, fabrics, florals, feathers andother natural elements create flair and personality. Addingextra flourishes in the right places can make the differencebetween a pretty tree and an extraordinary tree.”

Griffith said the hot colors for holiday 2012 range fromsoft pastels to rich jewel tones. Popular ornaments this sea-son reflect the Victorian era, with glittering gemstones andrhinestones being extremely popular.

And don’t be afraid to forgo the traditional tree topper.Instead, consider using twigs or other natural elementsarranged out of the top of your tree. Griffith has even strate-gically placed a tree beneath a chandelier for extra glow.

If you don’t have enough room for a traditional sizedtree, corner trees or the flatter profile trees are an excel-lent fit for smaller spaces. Or, Griffith suggested you maywant to go in an entirely different direction.

“I am into repurposing and recycling, so I took thebranches of an old artificial tree and wired them togetherto create swags, and then decorated those with combina-tions of fabrics, bows and ornaments,” he said. “You canhang swags on a mantel or place them on top of a door

frame. They’re a fun family project, and you can even createthem with different color stories or themes for each roomin your home.”

Griffith literally has thousands of ornaments at his finger-tips. While most people know Replacements as the world’slargest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and col-lectibles, the company has a vast selection of ornamentsfrom around the globe. These range from colorful blownglass to crystal and highly collected silver.

“As individuals, we chose ornaments for so many differ-ent reasons. Decisions may be driven by color or theme, but many choices are shaped by past and future tradi-tions,” said Keith Winkler, the company’s product marketingmanager. “Many people reach back to ornaments that

These havebeen in production for more than fourdecades and are a great tradition to addevery year.”

Winkler said popular dinnerware manu-facturers including Lenox, Wedgwood andWaterford all offer ornament lines. Forthose looking for popular blown glass, he

Agreat addition to any door is abeautiful wreath — either deco-rative or seasonal — to greet

your guests and neighbors. Here is a stylish and unique do-it-your-

self wreath:

Snowflakes wreathTo create the wreath, start by painting a

craft foam ring with KrylonIndoor/Outdoor paint in Global Blue.Once the paint is dry, add a coat of GlitterBlast in Sapphire Shimmer for a sparklingfinish. While it is drying, spray woodensnowflakes with Indoor/Outdoor in White.

Next, spray two sheets of cardstockand the dried wooden snowflakes withGlitter Blast in Diamond Dust. Then, spraythe wreath, card stock and woodensnowflakes with Glitter Blast Clear Sealer, which will protect your creation. Oncedry, cut out about 125 snowflakes using

paper punches and attach them to thewreath using push pins.

Finally, use ribbon to attach a large bowand wooden snowflakes to the wreathwith a hot glue gun. All that is left to dois hang it on the door.

When it comes to flowers andgreenery and creating a beauti-ful centerpiece, I can certainly

get by, but I’m no expert. With so manyholiday dinners right around the corner, Ithought I’d ask one of my go-to expertsfor the best tips on how to create a beau-tiful holiday centerpiece for your table.

Mike Miyashiro is owner and chiefdesigner at Rainforest in Kilohana Square. Iturn to him often because of his attentionto detail, creativity and customer service. Here are his tips — presented in his ownwords. Take it away, Mike!

Holiday succulent accents“Some of the most versatile plants we

know of are wonderful succulents thatgrow well even when we’re not trying. Wegrow them year-round and chop them andmultiply them in our gardens and pots.During the short days of winter, most flow-ering plants disappear, but not the succu-lents. Why am I mentioning succulents? Many of them resemble roses and exoticflowers that when combined with holidayaccents, take on a new look.

“An easy decorating idea involves using athin, coated wire to wrap stems of holly, greens and succulents together on a branch.Use moss or even dried leaves free of pestsand crumbles. Gather materials and placethem along the branch. From a point, wrapand tie the wire around the stems and begin‘haku-ing’ branches, leaves and succulentstogether onto the branch. If you’re a hakumaker whose winding gets bigger andgrander until it looks like a horse’s wreath atthe Kentucky Derby, then you’re the perfectcandidate to make this because it doesn’thave to be thin enough for someone towear.

“Finish the end by tying off the wire andhiding the tied end piece. Use this as a wallhanging by attaching a wire or string to thetop, or placing it sideways on a plate or lay-

ing it in a fancy pot. Succulents grow geot-ropically, so plants facing the wrong way willeventually ‘right’ themselves by facing up. Ifyou must, go ahead and add a bow andChristmas balls, and even a baby Rudolph. But the beauty is all yours in the making.”

E-Z Trim centerpieces“Using leftover tree trimmings, or a

designer bag of holiday trimmings will startyou off in the right direction to make whatI like to call E-Z Trim designs. Take out thatold ceramic vase (the kind they don’tmake any more) and garnish it with yourholiday greenery. Pull out those pinecones, and even fake holly if you want, thenadd just a couple of nice accent flowers tothis mix.

“There you have it: a beautiful center-piece using scraps, accents and flowers.”

Thank you, Mike! I am loving the quickand easy aspects of your tips, especiallyhow you use things you might already havelying around the house or yard. And forthose of you out there looking for one-of-a-kind centerpieces for your holiday table, ifyou’re like me, I’m sure you can’t wait toget started. Happy decorating!

The American home may be shrinking, but not thegreat american dream. Americans are still living large, just doing so in smaller spaces.

To some trend-watchers, the down-scaling of theAmerican home comes as good news. Architects, designers, and social observers say our willingness to resize our floorspace means Americans are rethinking the way we reallylive and how we use whatever space we do have. Home, they say, has become less about impressing others andmore about making ourselves happy. And since we aremostly Boomers — that tidal wave of Americans bornbetween 1946 and 1964 — who have long been accus-tomed to getting what we want, happiness is often defined

in terms of luxuries and personal amenities.“Natural materials like American Hardwoods are redefin-

ing the word ‘luxury,’” said Linda Jovanovich of the AmericanHardwood Information Center. “Hardwoods bring richnessand warmth to even small rooms, whether it’s used on thefloors and walls, or crafted into built-ins. Custom hardwoodfurnishings like bookcases and cabinets make a home per-sonal, yours alone, and isn’t that the ultimate luxury!”

More ideas are to use a sectional sofa to delineate an inti-mate seating area within an open floor plan. And find astanding wood-panel screen to create privacy or isolate awork space, say, in a bedroom office area. And don’t forgetto make it sustainable. Living green is a high priority for theanti-McMansion generation.

So while the size of the “average” U.S. home may beshrinking, remember that it’s more about a space that satis-fies the psyche in the process that defines the ultimate inluxury. Think custom kitchens with pro-quality appliances, posh home-spa baths and the beauty and warmth that onlycome with hardwood flooring, cabinetry and millwork.

A garage remodel canadd equity, ergonomicsThe newest phrase on the street

for home improvement is “garageenhancement,” and it is a great

way to add to your equity without buy-ing or building a new home. Interestingly, most of us don’t think of our garagesvery much. In fact, many of us don’t thinkof them as an asset at all.

Research shows that many home sellersand even salespeople for new residentialdevelopments do not show the garage topotential buyers. Typically a garage compris-es 20 to 30 percent of the footprint of thestructure, so to not have any value-addingdesign to such a large area is very surpris-ing.

Perhaps this is because the garage hashistorically been an empty shell of fourwalls and a concrete floor. You are lucky ifyou have drywall, let alone painted walls inyours. With a garage enhancement, muchvalue can be added — and seen aestheti-cally, felt ergonomically and realized finan-cially.

More times than not, potential homebuyers will see a finished garage or‘enhanced garage’ and choose to buy that

property over a property without a garageenhancement. Not only does a garageenhancement increase the value of yourproperty, but it can be an asset to yourdaily life as well.

A garage remodel can create a placewith workbenches and hanging tool stor-age to efficiently work on hobbies, mechanics and home projects. It also canfeature attractive cabinets, flooring that’seasy-to-clean and additional storage. Anenhanced garage can even be used foroverflow entertaining during the holidaysand family gatherings.

To many of us, it seems that our garageshave turned into mismanaged and disor-ganized storage units that are convenientlylocated close to home.

Think of a functional garage with an

attractive garage floor that is easy to cleanand maintain, and leaves you worry-freefrom stains, unsightly rough concrete, cracksand oil stains. Now imagine that you canhave this revolutionary new system installedin just one day with a manufacturer’s mate-rial lifetime warranty not to peel or delam-inate. Then, imagine it completely organizedwith ergonomic custom cabinets, work-benches or even an entertainment system

or bar to suit your individual needs. Lokahi Garage Experts’ products are

proudly made in the U.S. and are the mostdurable coatings and cabinet systems in theindustry — so much so that Lokahi GarageExperts epoxy coatings and cabinets comewith lifetime material warranties.

Lokahi Garage Experts can help you“unclutter your world.” For a free in-homeestimate, call 596-8833.

Build with quality lumber framingAre you considering building a new

structure or adding on to one? Ifyou are, you need to be concerned

about the framing materials that will go intoyour project. If you are hiring a general con-tractor, you should know what framingmaterials they are planning to use. If you oryour builder is choosing to use framing lum-ber, then you are making a very good choice— one that will give you years of depend-able service, strength and comfort. Not allthe lumber available in Hawaii is the samefrom supplier to supplier. Honsador Lumberhas set a new standard for wood framing inHawaii.

In conjunction with Pacific Northwestlumber mills such as Weyerhaeuser, one ofthe best in the industry, Honsador bringsyou what is known as Honsador PremiumLumber. Sourced from sustainable and well-managed forests under the watchful eye ofthe Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI), onlythe highest-quality Douglas Fir is importedfor use by builders and homeowners alike.

Honsador’s lumber buyers specify thattheir timbers have to be free of heart (the

center of the tree) and free of wane(absence of bark on the four long edgesof the piece) in most cases.

Builders get Honsador PremiumLumber in record time from the mills.Shipments leave the Pacific Northwestevery week. Upon arrival, HonsadorPremium Lumber is quickly processedthrough a HiBor treatment. This is a time-tested and very successful, non-toxic ter-mite and fungus treatment that provides a20-year, $5,000 warranty to qualified proj-ects. The lumber is then positioned forsale and is considered the freshest, clean-est and easiest-to-nail lumber in the state.

Honsador Premium Lumber is the newindustry standard for quality, freshness andappearance. Here are some points toconsider:

• Wood will not rust. • Wood is resistant to heat gain (wood is

400 times less heat conductive than steeland 8 1/2 times less than concrete).

• Wood is a renewable product.• Wood framing is the least expensive fram-

ing medium, preferred by builders andoffers superior thermal performance aswell as acoustic absorption.

You’ll get all these benefits at HonsadorLumber. Others claim to have high-gradematerials and great service, but at HonsadorLumber, the company delivers on thatpromise every day, hundreds of times aweek and on each and every order. Look forthe name Honsador Premium Lumber. Itonly is available across Honsador Lumber’sseven locations in Hawaii, from Hilo on theBig Island to Kilauea on Kauai. HonsadorLumber has proudly served Hawaii’sbuilders and homeowners for the past 77years. Call 682-2011 on Oahu or visit

Putting homeowners’ needs firstFounded by president Carl Gaumont

in 1987, Pacific Isle Contractors Ltd.has been building and remodeling

homes in the Islands for a quarter of a cen-tury. Gaumont describes the company as asmall contracting business that has foundits niche in residential remodeling. Projectsrange from kitchen and baths to large-scalerenovations, additions and new-home con-struction.

While Pacific Isle Contractors has com-pleted many additions and renovationsover the years, older homes built in the1930s and 1940s are some of its favoriteprojects.

“We renovated a number of olderhomes in the Nuuanu and Manoa areasand appreciate the architecture of thatera,” said Gaumont. “Some of these homeswere considered ‘tear downs’ by othercontractors, but after careful inspection, wefound them quite structurally sound.

“You need to put things in perspective. Ifyou’re going to spend the money on alarge scale renovation and 10 percent ofthat cost is necessary for repairs to thestructure, you’re probably ahead of thegame once you figure in the replacementcosts of one of these beautiful olderhomes.”

Since oftentimes the clients will be livingin the home while work is being done, theyare kept abreast of the scheduling andscope of work to be performed at anygiven time to minimize disruption to theirdaily lives. “Communication is a high priori-

ty,” Gaumont said. “We want homeownersto know what to expect on any given day,so we can address any issues that mightarise. Our goal is to help you attain yourdream home.”

Here is some feedback Pacific IsleContractors has received from its clients:

It has been eight years since Pacific IsleContractors did a very challenging, major ren-ovation and addition to our very uniqueKailua home. We were not only extremelyhappy with the results, but loved the experi-

ence of working together with Carl and ourarchitect, Paul Sheffield. We are now lookingforward to working with Carl once again, building a new home in Kahaluu.

— Pau and Gail Switzer

We just completed renovating our home inNuuanu, including new windows, siding and afamily room addition with a beautiful deck forentertaining friends and family. Our experi-ence with Pac. Isle Contractors has been

extremely enjoyable. Carl and his crew arevery professional and produce high-qualityworkmanship.

— Andre Lee

“Your renovation should be fun, notstressful, and Pacific Isle Contractors workshard to earn your trust and confidence,” saidGaumont. “We want to be your contractor.”

Stopping a pothole could beas easy as filling a crack.

BY KYLE GALDEIRA

Just in time for the holidays, HawaiiHardwood Flooring is giving the gift ofsavings to both new and loyal cus-

tomers. As it makes the move from its current

Kalihi location to a new home down theroad at 1727 Republican St., HawaiiHardwood Flooring is offering up to 70 per-cent off a wide range of flooring productsand accessories. So, as the company movesinto its new digs, customers can move somehigh-quality flooring upgrades into theirhomes and still have enough money left overto take care of holiday shopping lists.

The flooring experts are also offering aHoliday Refinishing Special, as home or busi-ness owners can refinish an existing flooringsystem for just $4.75 per square foot.

Hawaii Hardwood Flooring brings morethan 30 years of experience to every floor-ing project it takes on, and president ChrisBrenna makes it a priority to offer customersa multitude of residential and commercialflooring options. The company features threeinstallation teams and three sanding and fin-

ishing teams that take the worry, stress andmess out of the installation process.

If a brand-new flooring system is not fea-sible, Brenna suggested refinishing any exist-ing wood flooring to extend its life. He notedthat it will usually take a week for his team tosand and refinish 500 square feet of flooring, and the floor will need 30 days to hardenafter the refinishing process, as the floor willcure and become scuff-resistant.

“If you live in an older house with existingflooring that is looking pretty old, you canrefinish the floor with our dustless sandingand finishing process that typically takes aweek to do,” said Brenna, who also recom-mended putting protectors on the bottomof furniture pieces to lessen their impact onthe floor. “The process will make your floors

look brand new for company coming over.”Hawaii Hardwood Flooring also has some

tips for homeowners looking to brighten orspruce up their living space in anticipation ofhosting guests.

For those homeowners with aging car-pet who have been considering switchingto a hardwood flooring option, Brennasuggested pre-finished engineered or solidhardwood floor types as a quick andeffective solution, as installation normallytakes one to two weeks.

While pre-finished hardwood flooring hasgrown in popularity, Hawaii HardwoodFlooring is one of the few local flooring busi-nesses also offering sand-and-finish andunfinished materials. The wide variety offlooring choices coupled with their corre-

sponding installation procedures and distinctappearances provide customers with awealth of choices throughout each project.

Hawaii Hardwood Flooring offers peaceof mind with a price-match guarantee, two-year warranties (as opposed to one-yearguarantees offered by most competitors)and the user-friendly company is also able toassist with the moving of furniture and clean-ing. Additionally, the company offers freecleaning kits with each flooring system pur-chased and installed.

“Updating your flooring is just one of theways to spruce up your home in time for theholidays,” Brenna said.
