Dear Fellow Members and Friends,,

I hope you and your families are enjoying the summer of 2015!

We have had some wonderful social events this past month that I hope you enjoyed – your hosts are working so hard to make these special for you and I truly appreciate all they are doing for us . Steve Raleigh taught me how to play craps at Casino Night and I won big fake chips there and at the Black Jack table, but, alas, I lost it all to the tables eventually .

It was also good to see the omelet line chefs at the Champagne Breakfast and I observed there were even some new members cooking on the line for you . I wanted to mention that Tom

Minehart, the unofficial “Captain of the Line” and always in “Position 1,” and is our longest running chef with over 25 years of continuous service on the line, was ill that day and did not make it, but he was there with the team in spirit . Thanks Tom and we know you will be there next year!

For you golfers, Dennis Cooper is again running our 2nd annual BBYC golf outing on August 24th . Tee times are limited so give him a call if you are interested . I am playing, so anyone that beats me in “gross score” gets a free beverage of your choice!

After the positive feedback and excitement received from the May meeting, Rob Roth and the Board has been busy doing several iterations of the South Harbor Expansion project . We will have more formal “presentation boards” with elevations at the Annual Meeting for you to see . We will give you an updated presentation with our progress and some estimated costs for the project and how we propose to fund the project . There is still much to do but we are excited with the possibilities of the much needed additional storage, increased bathrooms, office, much larger deck area, social and programs space, locker rooms, regatta support, snack bar, bar areas, etc . We are still gathering ideas and feedback .

Secretary Beschel posted our new slate of officers and trustees last month on the bulletin boards at both the SHF and MCH . Thank you to those who served on the nominating committee and PC Messina for chairing this annual and most important process .

One last note – the membership committee hosted an open house on July 26 with over 20 perspective new members attending . I am very optimistic that we will get well over 5 new members for next year as a result . This is through the hard work in the planning and the implementation of this event . Thanks to everyone who were involved and the great job RC Howie did in MC’ing the event! In fact, one couple asked to join on the spot!

I saw a Facebook post today that is attributed to the late comedian George Carlan – “life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away .”thought it was a fitting end to this month’s message, so let’s enjoy “those moments” .

BBYC

Chairlady’s Message

Someone turned up the volume on the heat and the

fun at BBYC! The month of July has been busy! Thanks to

all those hosts who held amazing events and their volunteers,

as well as all you who have attended . We are having a blast

around here and can’t wait to see what is next!

August opens with the Jr . Breakfast hosted by the Juniors

who are being guided by the Heller and the Bennoit families .

Get your ducks before the big race! Juniors are selling them at

our events; please stop by and support their efforts . On Friday,

August 7th, the Leyden’s and Mignanelli’s will host an

informal Take Me Out to the Ballgame event . On Saturday, August 8th, Prom Night,

hosted by the “Cooper girls,” will be a night of dancing to remember for years to come -

unless Lukas brings out the mind erasers! Then all bets are off…

The following Friday, August 14th, will be the ever popular family event, The Bistro Night

hosted by the Benoit and Zetkulic families . Come, let the kids serve you for a change . Then

on Saturday, August 15th come and enjoy LJ Seybold’s famous Roast Beef Dinner while

catching up with friends and enjoying the sunset . Round out your weekend by coming to the

Tomato Breakfast hosted by the Amspachers and “the crew .” We are so pleased that this

well-loved tradition will continue on here at BBYC .

So…you think you can make a great sauce (or gravy as true Italians call it)? Well, the

challenge is on: Stretch Erhard is throwing down the gauntlet . Bring it on… .who will be

the Boss of the Sauce at BBYC? You be the judge…or the winner . That’s Friday, August

21st . Then Saturday, is Commodore’s Night hosted by the Kovacs and Reitingers . This

evening is our way of thanking this year’s Commodore, John Barbano, for all his work on

our behalf…while having fun dancing the night away! On Sunday, Chris Duncan will host

the Mariner’s Dinner; this event is a long standing tradition at BBYC, so we hope to see

you there!

We’ll have an Open Bar on Friday, August 28th, and on Saturday, August 29th, Rob Roth

is cooking for his event: Ragin’ Cajun . Don’t miss it! The man’s specialty is southern food

after all, so look for the adjective “delicious” to be used often . September 4th, Michele

Farias will host a Farm to Table Friday event, and the Carey’s are hosting a Surf-n-Turf

event on September 5th . Watch for information about these events as we get closer to time,

but please mark your calendars, so you don’t miss them!!

And…ladies, we don’t want you to miss out on the exciting Tuesday nights this season .

On the 4th of August, we have Wedding Memories; hosted by Margaret Turiano

and Susan Hannah; come bring your wedding albums, your wedding dress and/or old

If your child is between 21 and 25, he/she may apply through the office for their own member badge and account . There is no fee for this, because they are still members under your membership .

However, that membership only lasts until age 25 . But now, between the ages of 25 and 29, Children of Proprietary members (CHOPs) may apply for Proprietary membership by simply submitting an application (available online at www .bbyc .net), and they will be billed for dues at a 66% discount because of their age, as well as a bond; no initiation fee and no Provisional process .

The committee will be conducting interviews in August and September . So, if you know of someone who is interested, or think would be a good member, get an application online at www .bbyc .net and have it submitted to the office as soon as possible .

bridesmaids’ dresses, and your memories of

that special day to share with everyone .

Do you want to know more about the

sport that runs your life from August until

January, or are you a big fan yourself? Well,

Lori Streep has our own NFL referee, Tony

Veteri, coming to share his insights into the

world of football . Don’t miss the ABC’s of

Football! on Tuesday, August 11th . On

the 18th, Maureen Rokita is hosting our

professionals to speak to us about some

important issues at our Health Forum on

the 25th .

There are so many opportunities to get

involved and have fun at BBYC, so please

reach out and volunteer to help a host .

That’s the best way to meet new people and

create memories . Finally, please make your

reservations early; it truly helps your hosts

plan their events . Summer is flying by… . .let’s

make sure we don’t miss a minute of it!

See you on the deck!

Ship’s Store

Take a look at this picture and think how great you would look wearing one!!!

We are taking orders for Aprons this week and they will be embroidered with the BBYC logo and your name.

See the Ship’s Store, or Pat Prout, to place your order

Position Offered

Your Managed Kitchen Committee is moving ahead for next season . One of the things we have learned through this process is that the best way to find someone for this type of position is through word of mouth . We will be looking to hire a Manager/Chef for the 2016 Season in the next few months . If you know of anyone who:

• Has experience in kitchen management

• Knowledge of kitchen procurement, food safety and food preparation

• Is fiscally responsible

• Has strong customer service skills

Please have them contact me at derhard@aol .com .

From July 20th-24th Brant Beach Yacht Club and the Brant Beach Sailing Foundation hosted the Laser Class’s National Championship along with US Sailing’s Singlehanded Championships . This included Laser Standards, Laser 4 .7s, and Laser Radials . We had 194 registered sailors as guests (as well as their coaches, parents, cars, boats, and trailers) for the better part of a week . They came from as far east as Switzerland, as far south as Trinidad & Tobago, and as far west as Vancouver, BC . The regatta was extremely successful thanks to the hard work of over 100 BBYC volunteers . We received numerous glowing comments like “your team planned and executed a great event,” “Everyone raved about the food and race management”, and “just wanted to follow up with an email about how great it was to return to BBYC for another well executed regatta . ”This past week once again underscored why we won US Sailing’s One-Design Yacht Club of the Year Award in 2010 .

We still have the LBIYRA Interclub 5 August, Optimist Annual Regatta 6-7 August, Mariner Nationals 19-21 August, and the Laser Master’s Atlantic Coast Championship 19-20 September, Please do your best to volunteer again or for the first time .

Thanks again to all the volunteers for their efforts and to the membership as well for working with the regatta committee and staff to minimize the impact to regular club programs and events .

John BambachNominee for Rear Commodore I spent my youth at the Jersey Shore enjoying every aspect of summer freedom . My grandparents’ home in Wildwood set the stage for a lifelong love of sand and sea . After meeting my future wife, Jane, I was reluctantly lured north to Long Beach Island . I came to love the Island I now call my second home . I honed my surfboarding skills in he ocean and my waterskiing in the bay . I am still trying to conquer the water with my new interest in kiteboarding, which has been a humbling experience to date .

In 1990 my wife and I were introduced to BBYC by our daughter’s teacher, Burt Howlin (Hitscler) . She suggested we investigate a Junior Membership for Jennifer . We were tentative about our interview session with the Membership Committee . We didn’t own a yacht and knew next to nothing about sailing . Kathleen Thulin and Billy Fritz immediately put us at ease and introduced us to all BBYC had to offer . We quickly rolled the Junior Membership over to full family status . We were welcomed into the family of BBYC and have reaped the benefits ever since . My daughters have learned the pleasures of sailing, swimming and tennis . My wife and I have made enduring friendships while savoring some of the best good-times watching sunsets from the deck of BBYC . We have learned the intricacies and rewards of participating in a successful, productive volunteer organization while at the same time building upon a foundation of camaraderie and tradition .

I have, in the past, served as Trustee of the Membership Committee and shared in the general Board of Trustee discussions and responsibilities . In addition, I have served in the position of husband-of-the Chairlady; a position of following orders very well . I look forward to, in some small way, giving back to an organization that has provided so much pleasure to my family .

I currently live in Clearwater Beach, Florida and Brant Beach with my wife, Jane, and our dog, Jersey Girl . Our daughter, Jennifer, resides in Baltimore, Maryland . Our daughter, Elizabeth, lives in Tampa, Florida .

Rick SchafferNominee for Board Treasurer I have been a member of BBYC since 1994 after being introduced to the Club and many of you through Sherri Lou and my in laws (Bob and Joan Ann D’Autrechy) . Although I am not a sailor, many of you have probably met me at one time or another on the tennis court, running, on the beach, or just knocking back a few at the bar during the many events we all have attended over the years . Sherri and I have enjoyed our long association with the Club, and she has become even more involved the last several years after purchasing our home on 53rd Street . Now, I guess it’s my turn!

My business background is in Finance . Currently I am the Vice President, Chief Financial Officer of Luigi Bormioli responsible for their USA division . When it’s not about business and since purchasing our own home in 2009, you can usually find me here at the beach, almost year round, with my family (Sherri Lou and Casey Jane) entertaining friends, running or walking the beach, or watching sports . Our association with many of you, through the club, has always been a driving force in dedicating more of our free time here on the island .

BBYC is important to our family, and I look forward to working alongside our Board to ensure this Club remains fiscally sound and continues its long-standing traditions and heritage .

Brett AmspacherNominee for Trustee

I have been a member of BBYC since 1990 . During the last 25 years

Donna and I have enjoyed watching our children Ryan, Tyler and Emily

grow up and benefit from what the Club offers . The friendships and

memories we have made here are some of my most cherished . I am

honored to be asked to take a position within the Club . Brant Beach is

a very special place for me and my family . We have ben able to let our

children spend every summer sailing, biking and swimming with their

friends in a safe and loving neighborhood .

Burke MillerNominee for Trustee When my Nana and Pop made the initial drive over Barnegat Bay in the late 50’s, they found a love for this island that resonated 4 generations later . Our family home on 6th Street in Surf City still remains and is filled with many memories of my childhood and friendships that exist to this day . In 2000, Kate and I along with Morgan and Cameron moved to 14th in Ship Bottom . After numerous attempts from Howie Dumhart to give BBYC a visit, our family became members in 2011 . Can’t thank that guy enough (and you know he never lets me forget it) .

Over the past several years as members of BBYC, the welcoming effect of the club has been nothing short of amazing . From work weekends, organizing social events to enjoying our son sail opti’s and now the Laser program, Club engagement has given us the opportunity to meet the best of BBYC, the membership .

This October will be the 25th year I have spent working in the Medical Device field, Dental to be specific . Residing out of Skippack, Pennsylvania, I manage the North America sales team for Dentsply International .

Kate and I along with Morgan (19) sophomore at James Madison University, Cameron (15) High School, Shuby (lab), Finn (Bernese mountain dog) are so lucky to call our island home for the summer months of the year . In the off season, I can be found flying to the Rockies for a few days of snowboarding or cheering on Cam in many of the coldest ice hockey rinks in the Northeast .

The opportunity to serve and contribute to our club is most appreciated . My passion for our island, our club and the friends that make it such are the tapestry of great things to come .

With such busy schedules and lifestyles, women often fail to take the time necessary to focus on their own health and wellness needs. Take a break from your active schedule and join medical experts from Southern Ocean Medical Center for a casual conversation about the importance of caring for yourself and maintaining optimal wellness. Guest speakers will explore a variety of health issues that women should be aware of as they age to maintain their own wellness, as well as that of their loved ones. Guest Speakers Join Dr. Lisa Vernon and Dr. Tommasina Papa-Rugino as they discuss a variety of topics and encourage questions and discussion on issues such as biological changes as you age, menopause, stress, memory, stroke and concussion, just to name a few.

The Brant Beach Charity Foundation is sponsoring a Homefront visit. This is the day we get to share our beautiful bay with those less fortunate. Homefront summer camp is coming to Brant Beach YC for their special end of summer event. There are about 120 kids in the program and counselor. We will show them a good time by taking them on our boats, sail or motor, paddleboards and swim in our bay. We also serve a hearty lunch. Any way that you can help would be appreciated. HomeFront is a non-profit agency in Central New Jersey with a host of programs to break the cycle of poverty, both for parents and their children.

You will get just as much as they do by helping
