But What is ‘Ethics’?

Defining ethics is hard, but it really boils down to two things: Ideas of right and wrong that tell us what we

should do Development of a personal code of conduct

Instructions

The next two slides will present you with scenarios. The goal is for you to determine if the behavior is ethical or unethical.

Scenario

What should Cody do?

Why?

Cody is walking through the hallway at school. He spots a wallet on the ground and picks it up. As he flips through the wallet, he notices that there is no I.D. but there is $50.00 along with a $100.00 gift certificate to a local store.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO ‘HMMM’….

Let’s talk about SOPA and PIPA and Online Ethics

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) Proposed in/by US House of Representatives to

end online piracy (or at least make it more difficult) Online piracy is the downloading of ‘intellectual property’ or

copyrighted material in any form (music, movies, games, graphics, books, etc.)

How? Court orders would limit access to foreign websites

‘dedicated to theft’ Cut off U.S.-based payment processing for those

websitesCopyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved. 9

SOPA

In Reality

The bill would limit access to a huge number of websites that the average internet user visits on a regular basis

ISPs would be forced to monitor all internet traffic, and most anonymity would be gone As it stands now, most ISPs passively monitor what you are

doing. This bill would force them to actively monitor what you are doing

The government could also shut down any site that

promoted (through advertising) these foreign companies

PIPA (Protect IP)

Proposed in/by the U.S. Senate Like SOPA, it focuses on international

websites that are ‘dedicated’ to piracy and allows the government to block access to those sites

The only ‘big’ difference is that PIPA does not include provisions that would inhibit technology growth

BOTH BILLS

Would implement the same technology that China uses to block free speech

Require DNS servers to block U.S. users from certain websites

Page 13: 1 Telecommunications and Networking Ethics and the Digital Age Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved

Why are the bills such a big deal?

Example You and your best friend record yourselves lip-

syncing to your favorite song. The video is funny, so you upload it to a video-hosting website. The way SOPA is currently written, you could be arrested and put in jail for copyright infringement While this is an example of an extreme possibility, the

government does have this option with the way the bill is written

Page 14: 1 Telecommunications and Networking Ethics and the Digital Age Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved

Would they really work

YES They would inhibit the

growth of the Internet through fear fewer users = less piracy

issues They would actively block

problem sites and force ISPs to report users who try to visit those sites

No For every new tactic

implemented, there would be a new ‘hack’ to get around the system

They would take technology back decades in terms of usage Think about your

smartphones and having to implement blocking software on all electronic devicesCopyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved. 14

WHY ARE THEY TRYING TO PASS THESE BILLS?

An example of why people are trying to pass anti-piracy laws…

LET’S LOOK AT THE MOVIE INDUSTRY…

Consider this…for every movie that is made and makes a profit, there is another movie (or two) made that loses money!

Profits…

Research the highest-grossing movie of all time. What is it? Budget - $237,000,000 Worldwide gross - $2,783,918,982 (yes, billion) Profit - $1,154,959,491 (yes, billion again)

Losses… Research the ‘most money lost’ film.

Budget - $300,000,000 Worldwide gross - $254,439,100 Loss - $172,780,450

Biggest money loser based on return investment: Research movie title. Budget - $15,000,000 Worldwide gross - $22,723 Loss - $14,977,277

Winners vs. Losers

Movie companies are in it to make a profit, right?

Movies that make money help to cover the losses on movies that lose money

Surprising Losers

Profits for the highest-grossing film covered the losses on LOTS of movies: Which film lost this much money?- $94,434,085 ________________ - $88,999,414 _________________- $88,390,360 _________________- $75,499,388 _________________- $172,780,450 _________________- $14,977,277

Total losses on 6 movies - $535,080,974Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved. 20

Downloading by the numbers

Let’s consider our first film again

Retail purchase - $20.00

What happens when mass downloads occur?

Your 1 download = $20.00

What if all your friends in town get it too? 50 = $1000.00

How about all your friends on social media? 2500 = $50,000

Now go global

In the first few days after its release, our first researched film became the most downloaded movie ever with over 200,000 people downloading it in the first 4 days 200,000 downloads at $20.00 = $4,000,000 lost

(or revenue not seen anyway) on one movie As of 2010, it was the most downloaded movie of all

time with 16,580,000 downloads 16,580,000 * $20.00 = $331,600,000

How they (the movie industry) see it

Would you just let someone walk into your house and randomly take what they wanted?

That’s how the movie industry sees it They compare you downloading a movie with an

individual walking into your home and stealing your stereo system

Remember Professionalism? Really means (for our purposes)

You are a hard worker and role model who has a positive impact on those around you in the workplace

Page 26: 1 Telecommunications and Networking Ethics and the Digital Age Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved

What are you facing?

In economically hard times, jobs are harder to find, and the younger generation is competing against the older generation for fewer jobs

Page 27: 1 Telecommunications and Networking Ethics and the Digital Age Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved

Can you outwork the older generation? What does the older generation bring to the

table? A strong (positive) work ethic and professionalism

Inclined to work longer hours Readiness to stay later, come in earlier, and take a

shorter lunch Willingness to come in when they have a cold, or even

when the newest game is being released at midnight Respect for their supervisors and the ability to know

how to act with whom Experience

NOW THAT YOU KNOW WHAT THE QUESTION IS…WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO THE

TABLE?
