God told Samuel that he had mourned Saul's removal as the king of Israel long enough.

It was time to anoint another to take his place.

1 Samuel 16

The new king would come from the family of Jesse.

The people had chosen

Saul.

But God chose David, the youngest.

Singer, musi-cian, poet, and

shepherd

1 Samuel 16 6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before Him. 7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

Seven sons rejected

Samuel asked, "Is that all?"

13a Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.

In the mind of God, David became king of Israel right that moment.

13b So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

The job was done, and Samuel went home.

13b "and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward."

In Old Testament times the Holy Spirit came upon men and women for a certain calling.

Now He comes upon David.David is no longer just a shepherd,

musician, poet, singer.

Now he is a king.

14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

God is over all, even the demon spirits.

When God withdrew His Spirit from Saul,

He sent another to torment him.

Where do demons work?

Understand that Saul continues to sit on the throne for about fifteen more years. BKC

David is king in God's sight, and God's sight is the correct sight.

But to outward appearances, David becomes a renegade and Saul remains king.

Page 10: 1 samuel 16b a new king is chosen

10

Once again Saul has rejected the Word of the Lord, Who said that Saul would no longer be king.

But is he really getting away with it?

An evil spirit has entered his mind in the absence of God's Holy Spirit.

It is driving him crazy!

11

15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. 16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

12

17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

Music can drive away evil spirits,

and music can set the atmosphere to welcome

The Spirit of God.

13

18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethle-hemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.

14

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armor-bearer. 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight.

The timing of events here can be a bit confusing, but apparently David did not stay at the palace

permanently; he would come as needed.

David may have been about twelve at this time. BKC

15

23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

16

19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. 20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

David didn't go to the king empty-handed.

But that is exactly how we come to our King,

Jesus.

I want to talk a bit about the blessings of music in our worship services.

Psalms 150 1 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary: praise Him in the firmament of His Power. 2 Praise Him for His mighty acts: praise Him according to His excellent greatness. 3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet: praise Him with the psaltery and harp. 4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance: praise Him with stringed instruments and organs. 5 Praise Him upon the loud cymbals: praise Him upon the high sounding cymbals. 6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.
