TECH CORNER - Updates From the AFCOOP Equipment Room

CANON 30-105mm LIGHTWEIGHT ZOOM @ AFCOOP The beautiful new Canon 30-105mm Lightweight Zoom lens has finally arrived at AFCOOP!

In the ever popular category of lightweight PL mount zoom lenses the Canon 30-105 outperforms other lenseseven twice its price. It features incredibly smooth zoom movement (stable and cinematic), a slightly warm colorrendition and a creamy, organic feel to its images. AFCOOP is very excited to offer this lens and to pair it withour Canon C300 - the lens was indeed designed to augment and compliment the sensor of the Canon C300.

The lightweight zoom lens has been a critical tool in the art of filmmaking for many years. It plays an importantrole in the cinema verite & handheld style (see filmmakers such as Cassavetes, Maysles and Dardennebrothers, Farhadi, etc,) making it possible to film for long periods of time in an intuitive, expressive and loosemanner. It is popular in modern drama and documentary.

The lens will be available to rent for AFCOOP Full Members for $200/day $400/week and for Non-Members itwill be priced at $600/day, $1000/week. It will also be available in two incredible packages we offer: the CanonC300 MASTER Package and Independent Filmmakers Package...

2. WORKSHOPS

Film Guided Tour: a celluloid film workshop series The Film Guided Tour aims to provide filmmakers and artists with hands-on experience using celluloid motion

picture film. Filmmaker Alex Balkam will walk participants through every step of the celluloid process. If you

love working with your hands and want to experience holding your movie between your fingers and guiding it

toward completion this is the course for you. The Film Guided Tour is an excellent opportunity to develop

handcrafted cinema skills!

Module 1 – Small Gauge Film Cameras July 15, 6pm - 9pm AFCOOP Office

In this module participants will be given an overview of various small gauge film cameras (Super-8 and 16mm).

Super-8 cameras are remarkably intuitive and user friendly, all fun and no hassle! The 16mm Bolex is the gold

standard of 16mm, capturing resolution that modern digital cameras still dream of achieving. Participants will

be given the opportunity to select a camera to shoot their own film on over the course of the following week.

Module 2 – Hand-Processing Film July 22, 6pm - 9pm NSCAD Film Building

Participants will be introduced to AFCOOP’s hand-processing facilities at the NSCAD film building. We will cover

the theory of b&w and color chemistry and explore two different approaches to hand-processing film: bucket

processing and the Morse Tank! Participants will be individually instructed on the proper methods for processing

either Super-8 or 16mm film.

Module 3 – Editing Celluloid Film July 29, 6pm - 9pm AFCOOP Office

In this final module participants will spend the evening learning basic techniques for editing their film works on

a flatbed editing table: the Steenbeck or the Super 8 Editor/Viewer. Discover the zen of sitting down at the

Steenbeck and chopping away at your film with a splicer and tape. Challenge yourself with the decisiveness of

the film splice, the finality of an editing decision. Enter the realm of the handcrafted cinema!
