AFCOOP's Writers' Perspective The Writers’ Perspective incorporates elements of discussion of screenwriting structure and conventions,feedback on individual projects and, hopefully, the occasional visit from other writing professionals from outsideof the world of screenwriting to shed light on storytelling. FILM 5 Trainee Info Session Thursday, January 15th, 6pm FREE The FILM 5 Trainee Program is a hands-­on training program for aspiring technical crew. Paralleling the CreativeTeam component the Trainee program provides participants with high quality classroom training, practical on-­set instruction and networking opportunities.

To become a Trainee crew member, you must take the required workshops for your desired position, pay theapplication fee, which includes the mandatory Set Etiquette Course, come to the Trainee/Team Meet and Greetand submit a resume and application form.

On the FILM 5 sets, trainees work under key crew members from the local film industry. Keys are industryprofessionals responsible for running their department, and for providing guidance and leadership to thetrainees. Trainees leave the production having networked with industry crew, with practical experience andresume references.

Each FILM 5 production is required to have a minimum of seven trainees on set. FILM 5 productions take placeon a weekend in March and/or April. Creative Team Producers are responsible for reviewing resumes and hiring trainees. The Project Manageroversees this process and works to ensure that all trainees receive a successful placement.

The first workshop, “Intro to Filmmaking in NS” is a primer in all things film-­ic in the maritime region. Learnabout the basic production process and where to find the resources to make your first film. Other workshops inthe series introduce the most important roles on a film set as well as focusing on some of AFCOOP’s newequipment. Learn from professional filmmakers who are active in their field and connect with fellow workshopparticipants in this practical series.

NEW: Lost and Found: working with celluloid footage

In this hands-­on and immersive experience, participants will create their own short film with 16mm and super 8movies while they learn experimental celluloid filmmaking techniques. Re-­photography and transferring of filmto video / video to film, optical printing and blow-­ups, drawing and scratching on film, basic celluloid editing,capturing and editing film strip sound and hand processing of 16mm black and white film, among othertechniques, will be explored. Through group screenings and discussions we will also explore the rich history offound footage works in artistic cinematic practices, with a focus on Canadian and seminal works as well asexamine legal and moral implications inherent in the practice.

Some background in photography of any kind would be useful for participants but not necessary.

Digital Storytelling is the intersection between traditional storytelling and modern technology. Stories havebeen used throughout history and by all cultures to pass on important knowledge. With the advent of screenculture, easy to use software, and the Internet we can now tell, capture and disseminate our stories in new andpowerful ways to a broader population. Digital storytelling is being used in many different capacities across the world to recognize, honor, andencourage the sharing of human experience and insight. Nova Scotia Talent Trust gives out 75,000 in Scholarships to 51 Nova Scotia Emerging Artists-­ The Nova ScotiaTalent Trust has recently given out $75,000 in scholarships to emerging Nova Scotia artists in the fields ofdance, theatre, media (film) studies, music, visual and literary arts. The 51 successful scholarship recipientswere chosen from a field of 107 applications from two deadlines, 1 March and 1 May 2014. 5 of the 51scholarships are supported by the NS Arts Endowment Fund in the amount of $2,000 each.

The Film and Media Arts recipients this year were Gwyneth Christoffel, Halifax, and Sam deCoste, Halifax.

The next deadlines are March 1st, 2015 for summer study, and May 1st, 2015 for fall or winter study.

Research and experimentation are an intrinsic part ofcreation, and discovery is the prologue to enduring artistic innovation. Our objective is to foster the creativeprocess of filmmakers by offering them access, space and time to explore something new, something theymight not otherwise have the means to do.

THE PROGRAMME The FILM FACTORY provides the environment, the tools and the training for artists to undertake creative risksin the development, exploration, and experimentation of their own artistic practice of film as an art form.Through offering filmmakers a process-­oriented approach to filmmaking and giving them the freedom, time andopportunity to explore and invent new approaches, crafts and techniques of the filmmaking process, the FILMFACTORY becomes a vital incubator for new visions in film. FILM FACTORY participants have the opportunity to work on their project within our fiscal year (April 1, 2015 -­March 31, 2016) with access to MAIN FILM'S equipment, facilities and workshops. If the training required bythe filmmaker for their project is more specialized than MAIN FILM'S regular workshops can offer, individualtraining is provided. Filmstock may be available, but recipients must pay for their own processing. Successful proposals will demonstrate the filmmaker's readiness to explore and to innovate, as well as theirneed to further their own individual filmmaking language. They must have a particular goal in mind which neednot necessarily be an end product, but could be. The most innovative projects are supported -­ from aesthetic exploration to cultural contribution. Filmmakers atall levels of experience are welcome to apply. The number of artists supported each year is a maximum of five.

Applicants must provide a list of equipment, facilities and training they expect to use. A work schedule must besubmitted. No budget is required for the application.

There is no cash awarded.

ELIGIBILITY Filmmakers do not need to be Main Film members to apply. However, successful candidates must become amember of Main Film to trigger the support. Those who are already Main Film members must be members ingood standing. Individual artists may benefit from this programme only twice.

We are all so excited that Women Making Waves is just around the corner (February 27 to March 1), and we

would be delighted to have you involved! Women in Film and Television-­Atlantic could not offer such an engaging conference without the impressive skills

and commitment of our volunteers. Over the next few months we will have plenty of work ahead of us, but we

know, with the help of our dedicated membership, that we can deliver an amazing experience. Below are conference areas that could use an extra hand or two:

Videography -­ We want to film our panels and speakers this year, so everyone can enjoy the conference from

anywhere. Photography -­ Images speak a thousand words, so we need someone to capture all the fun on camera. Technical – Getting wired, plugged in, and amped up is essential for our conference, and no we aren’t referring

to energy drinks. Outreach -­ Getting the word out is essential. If you are a good communicator then this is the position for you. Social Media -­ We need someone with quick fingers who is always ready to tweet, post, or hashtag. Silent Auction -­ Our silent auction must be bursting with goodies! Ushers and Runners -­ We want to make sure no one is separated from the pack, so get your sneakers on and

guide the crowds.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE INNOVATION COMPETITION LAUNCHES IN NOVA SCOTIA www.novascotia.coop. Deadline: January, 23rd, 2015

The Nova Scotia Co-­operative Council has launched a Social Enterprise Innovation Competition. Three prizes

will be awarded, one in each Region (South west Valley, Northern/ Central, and Cape Breton). The prize is a

$2500.00 equity contribution plus 10 hours of technical assistance (governance training, business plan review,

etc). The Social Enterprise Innovation Competition is open to all social enterprises in Nova Scotia who meet the

eligibility criteria. They can be start-­ups (registered/incorporated and ready to launch), or established social

enterprises looking to grow or become more innovative. Municipalities, First Nations, and other agencies

considering a social enterprise to address a local challenge or opportunity are also eligible. Social enterprises

are defined as enterprises that use market-­oriented production for the sale of goods and/or services to further

a public benefit mission. In other words, the enterprises must be operating a business activity – selling a

product or service. The social enterprise can take the form of a not-­for-­profit, non-­profit, a co-­operative or

social purpose business which are for-­profit but designed to fulfil a social mission. Social enterprises have a

strong emphasis on meeting a community need or maximizing an opportunity that will benefit the broader

community. Examples may be, (though not limited to), a local daycare, transportation system for seniors or

persons with disabilities, recycling depot, homecare and healthcare services, etc.

The Environmental Noxiousness, Racial Inequities & Community Health Project (ENRICH) (which is beingconducted through the School of Nursing at Dalhousie) has launched "Time to Clear the Air: Art onEnvironmental Racism by Mi'kmaw and African Nova Scotian Youth" in collaboration with the School ofEnvironment & Sustainability at Dalhousie. The purpose of this initiative is to create a platform for Mi'kmaw andAfrican Nova Scotian youth to give voice to their experiences with and perspectives on environmental racismthrough art (music, poetry, spoken word, dance, graphic art, photography, painting, short fiction, storytelling,etc.). The initiative hopes to spark greater awareness of and dialogue about environmental racism amongMi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian youth. CG production for DHX Media, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, seeks Lighter / Compositor to join our growingteam. Knowledge of Maya essential, Renderman and Nuke X highly desirable. Qualifications Include:

Full knowledge of Maya (Mel knowledge a plus) Effects animation experience in film or animated television series. Experience in producing effects such as smoke, clouds, water, steam and dust. Renderman knowledge an asset Nuke X knowledge an asset Python scripting is a plus. Must be extremely detail oriented and organized.

Candidates MUST be Canadian citizens or already have Landed Immigrant status in Canada. This opportunity is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia and requires relocating to this city for the duration of theterm.
