Fundamental Principle

It is inherent in the recognition of an asset or liability that the reporting entity expects to recover or settle the carrying amount of that asset or liability. If it is probably that recovery or settlement of that carrying amount will make future tax payments larger (smaller) than they would be if such recovery or settlement were to have no tax consequences, this Standard requires an entity to recognize a deferred tax liability (deferred tax asset), with certain limited exceptions.

IFRS Impact on Tax Reporting and Tax Filings

• Income Tax Act of Canada (“ITA”) – no requirement directing the use of one particular accounting methodology when preparing tax filings – therefore IFRS/CDN GAAP both acceptable

• Management will need to assess what, if any, adjustments to accounting profit are required to arrive at taxable profit per the ITA

• IFRS impact on the balance sheet may also impact a company’s tax on capital

• CRA has not issued any formal statement or guidance on the effects of the transition to IFRS
