ORGANIZING THE ELEMENTS
ORGANIZING ELEMENTS BY THEIR PROPERTIES Periodic table- organizes information
about the elements and their properties Atomic mass- the average mass of one
atom of an element Mendeleev discovered that he could
arrange the elements in a chart, or table, based on their physical and chemical properties
HOW WAS MENDELEEV'S SYSTEM FOR ORGANIZING THE ELEMENTS SHOWN TO BE RELIABLE?
TODAY’S PERIODIC TABLE Information in periodic table
based on structure of atoms Elements are grouped in the
periodic table according to their properties
Atomic parts- protons, neutrons, and electrons
Atomic number- the number of protons in the nucleus of its atoms
NAVIGATING THE TABLE Group- elements in the same column, or
family Elements in the same group have similar
physical and chemical properties Period- row across the table
IDENTIFYING PATTERNS AND PROPERTIESYou can classify an element and predict some of its physical and chemical properties based on the element’s location in the periodic table.
Metals Nonmetals
Metalloids• Elements to
the left of the line are metals
• Elements to the right of the line are nonmetals
• Have properties sometimes similar to metals and other time to nonmetals
