From your Pastor… My Dear People,

In a certain church there was a man in the choir who couldn't sing very well. The choir director suggested that he should leave the choir. Others felt he should be given more time to improve. The choir director then decided to go to

the pastor and complain. "You've got to get that man out of the choir or else I'm going to resign." So the pastor went to the man and said to him, "Perhaps you should leave the choir." "Why should I leave the choir?" the man asked. "Well," said the pastor, "four or five people have told me you can't sing." "That's nothing," the man replied, "forty or fifty people have told me you can't preach!" So, what is Advent?

It is a time of Expectation. It is a time of Hope. It is a time of Anticipation. It is a time to prepare our hearts and minds to receive the “JOY” of having God amongst us. The time of Advent lasts about four weeks; beginning four Sundays before Christmas and ending on Christmas Eve. So, Advent is a season of anticipation that leads up to Christmas. I would encourage each of you, my people, to take time for meditation and reflection each day of this sea-son… by remembering to offer God your gifts of heartfelt gratitude and love.

We busy ourselves cleaning our houses and decorating them with beautiful ornaments. Please don’t forget to visit the confessional and clean your hearts as well. No prepara-tion or celebration would be complete, if we cannot find time to first beautify our souls in the confessional. The message of John the Baptist has to resonate in our hearts: “Repent and believe in the Gospel”. Wishing you a Blessed Advent, Father Edison

Today’s Readings

First Reading—We are the clay and you, O LORD, are the potter: we are the work of your hands. (Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7) Psalm—Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved (Psalm 80). Second Reading—God is faithful; by God you were called to fellowship with the Son (1 Corinthians 1:3-9). Gospel—Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. (Mark 13:33-37).

Welcome to St. Francis of Assisi! We extend a special welcome to

all our visitors and new parishioners who have come to celebrate Mass with us today! If you are new to our com-munity, please introduce yourself to our clergy. If you live in this area and attend regularly, we invite you to join our parish of St. Francis of Assisi. Regis-tration is necessary for better care of souls, more effective administration of sick calls, and matters pertaining to bap-tism, education, marriage and burial.

Registration is very easy, and the green “Parish Regis-tration” cards can be found in the pamphlet holder above the table in the lobby. After completing, please place in the Parish Drop Box, located in the door by the water fountain in the lobby.

Watch Out! In Advent, we celebrate our hope that the Lord might

come more fully into our lives. The first reading from Isaiah voices the hope of sinners for a redeemer. Unlike Isaiah, we know that God has come to bring us back, when the Father sent his Son, Jesus, to save us. Our faith in Jesus leads us to a new way of looking at the world. We can see what God is doing as well as remembering what God has done. Like the gatekeepers in Jesus' Gospel parable, we need to keep our eyes open for him. When we only look out for ourselves, we may miss the signs of God's presence around us. Instead of looking at the difficulties of life as obstacles, we can watch for them as opportunities to stretch our faith, to rely on God, or to show God's love to a friend. The re-cent re-translation of the prayers of the Mass can be an op-portunity to stretch our faith and our understanding of the Eucharist. The Corinthians were also watching for the Lord to come. They were thinking of Jesus as coming in glory. Though we don't see the full glory of the Lord, part of that glory is his presence in the sacraments. In them we cele-brate not just the coming of the Lord, but his working in the world. He shares his life with us in baptism, gives us his Spirit in confirmation and himself in the Eucharist, heals us in reconciliation and the anointing of the sick, and calls us to make him present to others in holy orders and matri-mony. You could almost say his second coming is taking place now. Watch for it. ~ Tom Schmidt

Caught Doing Good

Thankfully, our daily life means so much more than any commercial break. We are not just marking time, because God treasures our daily thoughts, works, joys, and suffer-ings. Nothing escapes the loving attention of the Lord. Noth-ing is irrelevant to God. In fact, we are God's beloved ser-vants, "each with [our] own work," as Jesus says in the Gos-pel. God knows intimately our challenges and wants to ac-company us in all we do. A line from today's reading from Isaiah can help us connect our daily work with God's love: "Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways!" During Advent, we can offer that prayer each morning, inviting the Lord to guide us as we live and wait.

Readings for the Week Monday: Isaiah 2:1-5; Psalms 122:1-9; Matthew 8:5-11 Tuesday: Isaiah 11:1-10; Psalms 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13; Luke 10:21-24 Wednesday: Isaiah 25:6-10a; Psalms 23:1-6; Matthew 15:29-37 Thursday: Isaiah 26:1-6; Psalms 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a; Matthew 7:21, 24-27 Friday: Genesis 3:9-15, 20; Psalms 98:1-4; Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12; Luke 1:26-38 Saturday: Isaiah 30:19-21, 23-26; Psalms 147:1-6; Matthew 9:35 -- 10:1, 5a, 6-8 Sunday: Isaiah40:1-5, 9-11; Psalms 85:9-14; 2 Peter 3:8-14; Mark 1:1-8

December 3, 2017 The First Sunday of Advent 5

2017 Retirement Fund for Religious The 30th appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious will be held Dec. 9-10. The an-nual, parish-based collection is coordinated by the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) and benefits some 32,000 aging Catholic sisters, brothers and priests in reli-

gious orders. Many served for years in Catholic schools, hospitals, and parishes—often for little to no pay. Now there is a shortage in retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides funding for medi-cations, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.

Latin Classes The Latin class of Most Holy Redeemer parish will wel-come new students on 1/11/18 at 6:30 p.m. To register, write [email protected] or call (813) 748-0746. Lingua Latina est thesaurus incomparandae praestantiae - The Latin language is a treasure of incomparable value.

Baptism Class The next scheduled baptism class for those parents wishing to have their children bap-tized here at St. Francis will be Monday evening, December 4th at 7:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. Parents need to complete our series of three classes prior to having their child baptized.

Prayer After Communion At each mass, during the song following communion, we have the opportunity for per-sonal reflection about the most solemn part of our mass. It is a time for prayers of grati-tude to out Lord for all our blessings but most importantly for the gift of His Precious Body and Blood. In January, following the Communion song, we will begin to jointly

say the prayer that most expressly is the prayer to follow Holy communion, the Anima Christi. This beautiful prayer will be led by the Lector and will precede the announce-ments. Please take time over the next few weeks to famil-iarize yourself with the prayer which can be found in Sec-tion 978 of the Glory & Praise book. We look forward to beginning this new practice in our church and to sharing this very special time together with you.

Women’s Guild The Women’s Guild will be having its monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Hall. New members are invited to attend!

The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin The feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Friday, December 8th is a Holy Day of Obliga-tion. A Vigil Mass for the feast will be celebrated Thursday, December 7th at 7:30 p.m., and on Friday, December 8th, the Feast Day, at 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in English and 7:30 p.m. in Spanish in the Social Hall.

All Hands on Deck! Saturday, February 10, 2018, the date of our Celebration of Life Car and Craft Show, is fast approaching. Please sign up to help us with this Parish-wide fund raiser by coming to our Sign Up Table

after Mass. We need your talents ranging from painting curbs and signs, trimming tree limbs, laying out show car and vendor spaces, to distributing flyers at other car shows and day-of-event tasks.

If you can't take the time today to sign up, please call the Parish Office, leave your name and phone number, and a member of our Steering Committee will contact you. Let's get ready to rock n roll with the Fr. Eric Band at our St. Francis Car ‘n Craft Show, February 10, 2018.

What is Your Next Step in Your Job Search? Your next step should be to attend our St. Stephen Career Transition Workshops held at St. Stephen Catholic School on Boyette Road behind our Family Life Center. Our ses-sions are held most Monday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM covering resume reviewing, interviewing tips and networking. For more information call 813-672-2552 or [email protected].

Thank you! Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center staff and volun-

teers would like to express our gratitude for the love parishioners have showered on our clients in need. The Diaper and Baby Items Drive St. Francis Parish held during the month of October filled our baby boutique with much needed supplies for our clients.

The guesstimate total for the donated items is $1902.65, which is an almost $300 increase from last year! Your love, prayers, and generosity touches their hearts and souls with the love of Christ, and encourages them to choose life when facing the difficulties of pregnancy.
