From the Pastor… My Dear People, In the small cemetery of a parish church-yard in Olney, England, stands a granite tomb-stone with this inscription: “John Newton, clerk [pastor], once an infi-

del & Libertine, a servant of slavers in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the Faith he had long labored to destroy.” You may not remember his name, but all of us know the hymn he wrote as a testimony to the indispensible role of God's Grace in his life, “Amazing Grace.” In this Sunday’s Gospel we read about the first people Christ called to be his disciples, so I think it appropriate to reflect on the worthiness of being chosen to serve God.

How often have we asked ourselves questions such as, “Am I worthy to be a minister to serve God on the altar?”; “Am I worthy to be an Extra Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion?” “Am I worthy to serve in this or that ca-pacity?” Is anyone worthy or does anyone deserve of one's own merits to be who or what one is?

I am a priest and a happy one, too. But am I worthy or do I even deserve to be serving Christ by my own merits? The answer to that is an absolute, No! Echoing St. Paul, I would like to say that ‘who I am and what I am is by the grace and power of Christ who chose me.’ It is not that I chose God but rather it is He who chose me and made me who I am….just as He chose the disciples as they were and molded them into who they became.

Look at all of Christ's apostles; none of them were ex-traordinary men. They were ordinary men like you and me. When Jesus calls us and chooses us, He doesn’t look at our worthiness, but rather He looks into our hearts to see whether we are willing to follow Him.

So if you are afraid of your worthiness to serve God, please don’t… because in that case, none of us would be qualified. Let us instead, be willing instruments in God’s Hands and allow Him to work miracles through us. We all can be the Face of Christ in this world. We are all called to serve in different ways. He needs each and every one of us to build His Kingdom here on earth.

The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us .

Welcome to St. Francis of Assisi! We extend a special welcome to

all our visitors and new parishioners who have come to celebrate Mass with us to-day! If you are new to our community, please introduce yourself to our clergy. If you live in this area and attend regularly, we invite you to join our parish of St. Francis of Assisi. Registration is nec-essary for better care of souls, more effective administra-tion of sick calls, and matters pertaining to baptism, educa-tion, marriage and burial.

Registration is very easy, and the green “Parish Regis-tration” cards can be found in the pamphlet holder above the table in the lobby. After completing, please place in the Parish Drop Box, located in the door by the water fountain in the lobby.

Today’s Readings First Reading—The people of Nineveh believed God and turned from their evil ways (Jonah 3:1-5, 10). Psalm—Teach me your ways, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading—The world in its present form is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:29-31). Gospel—This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:14-20).

The Demands of Discipleship

Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world

are, and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before he calls his new followers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our disciple-ship through baptism, we must first know our need for con-version, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today's Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his voca-tion as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experi-ence consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation.

Don Bosco Festival Don Bosco’s Feast is here! Mary Help of Christians is ex-cited to be hosting a weekend festival in honor of Don Bosco on January 26-28, 2018. St. John Bosco is honored annually

at Mary Help of Christians since he is their patron saint and saint of joy and friend of the young and the poor. This is a special year for Mary Help since they will be celebrating their 90th Anniversary and would love to kick off the year with their largest festival yet.

This is a great family friendly festival with many ways to entertain the young ones as well as the adults and is non-expensive. There will be live entertainment, silent and live auctions, flea market and craft fair, pony rides and games, and lots of food and beverages. The festival is located at 6400 E. Faith Football Scholarship Ave Maria University is pleased to announce that through the generosity of a donor, a new Faith and football Scholarship is being offered for quali-fied football players who are committed Catho-lics. Cuan a menudo nos hacemos nosotros mismos preguntas como ¿Soy digno de ser un ministro para servir a Dios en el altar?"; "¿Soy digno de ser un Ministro Extraordinario de la Sagrada Comunión?" ¿Soy digno de servir en esta o aquella capacidad? ". ¿Hay alguien digno o alguien se merece por méritos propios ser quién o qué es? Yo soy un sacerdote feliz. Pero, ¿soy digno o incluso merezco servir a Cristo por mis propios méritos? La res-puesta a eso es absoluta, ¡No! Haciéndome eco de San Pa-blo, me gustaría decir que 'lo que soy y lo que soy es por la gracia y el poder de Cristo que me eligió'. No es que yo escogí a Dios, Él fue quien me eligió y me hizo quien soy... así como Él eligió a los discípulos tal como eran y los moldeó en lo que ellos se convirtieron Miremos a los discípulos de Cristo, ninguno de ellos fueron hombres extraordinarios. Ellos fueron hombres co-rrientes como tú y como yo. Cuando Jesús nos llama y nos escoge el no mira cuan dignos somos, más allá de eso el mira nuestros corazones para ver cuanta voluntad tenemos para seguirlo a él. Entonces si usted está temeroso por su dignidad para servir a Dios, por favor no lo haga porque en ese caso nin-guno de nosotros no estaría calificado. Permítanos, en cam-bio, ser instrumentos dispuestos en las manos de Dios y permitirle hacer milagros a través de nosotros. Todos pode-mos ser el Rostro de Cristo en este mundo. Lecturas de Hoy Primera lectura—Samuel responde al llamado del Señor: "Habla, Señor, tu siervo te eschucha" (1 Samuel 3:3-10, 19). Salmo—Aquí estoy, Señor, para hacer tu voluntad (Salmo 40 [39]). Segunda lectura—Tu cuerpo es un templo del Espíritu Santo; por tanto glorifica a Dios en tu cuerpo (1 Corintios 6:13-15, 17-20). Evangelio—Los primeros discípulos empiezan a seguir a Jesús y declaran que es el Mesías (Juan 1:35-42).

Dios ama al hombre y desea que sea fe-liz, que se convierta y viva, dejando el cami-no equivocado y volviéndose al bien y la verdad. Lo hicieron los ninivitas cuando Jonás les

predica la destrucción por su mala conducta. Lo hicieron los apóstoles cuando Jesús les llama y ellos le siguen. El bautismo es el primer llamado a la conversión . Pe-ro, la conversión, es una tarea continua. La conversión es una llamada y una respuesta. Dios nos llama a convertirnos y el hombre responde con la conver-sión, en la fe. La fe llama a la conversión, acompaña durante la con-versión y da frutos en la vida. Cuando la conversión se funda en la fe y es acompañada por ésta, culmina con el seguimiento de Cristo. Pablo dice: "El tiempo acaba..." Convertirse es la con-ciencia de que este mundo no es eterno, y la convicción de fe de que sólo Dios ha vencido el tiempo, y vive en el re-ino eterno. Lo corto de la vida y la eternidad de Dios, son verdades que se complementan y motivan la conversión. ¿Es necesario convertirse? En el mundo actual, muchos están alejados de Dios, adoptan comportamientos inmora-les en el ámbito familiar o profesional, viven lejos de la Iglesia y creen que llevan una vida buena, y que no tienen necesidad de conversión. ¿De qué habrá de convertirse si creemos estar en el buen camino? Es el drama de hoy. La lujuria no es pecado, es evasión; el drogarse una necesidad o una exigencia del joven. El murmurar o calumniar, un convencionalismo social. La infidelidad matrimonial una "escapada", en la realidad o en sueño. Quien así piensa y actúa no ve necesidad de convertir-se, porque su comportamiento es aceptado socialmente. La fe es la respuesta del hombre a la revelación de Dios. Reconocer esto es indispensable para la conversión. ¿Son las verdades de fe y moral, enseñadas por la Igle-sia, lo que marca mi conducta? ¿Predicamos la conversión como realidad que nace de la fe? Cristo nos invita a la conversión. ¿Lo escuchas? Seguir a Cristo requiere una conversión desde la fe.

CONOCIENDO MI IGLESIA. A veces decimos : “Yo soy católico”, “El es cristano”. Y lo primero que tenemos que aclarar es que para ser

católico hay que ser cristiano, el católico es cristiano, por-que cristiano es aquel que cree y sigue a Cristo.

Los Católicos somos miembros de la Iglesia Católica Romana, la Iglesia fundada por Jesucristo, por medio de la cual El se hace visible en el mundo hoy y desde la cual nos invita a compartir su vida y su amor con todos los hombres, en cada uno de los cuales tenemos que descubrir la presen-cia de Dios.

Los católicos formamos parte de la Iglesia Católica. Que tiene su Sede en Roma, donde está el Papa.

¿Cuáles son las características de la Iglesia Católica? La Iglesia Católica es:

-UNA: En la unidad de su doctrina, autoridad y culto en el mundo entero. ♦ SANTA: Porque esta apoyada en las enseñanzas y la

persona de Cristo, sirviendo a los hombres por medio de los Sacramentos.

♦ CATOLICA: Significa que esta extendida por toda la tierra, la catolicidad quiere decir universalidad.

♦ APOSTOLICA: Porque esta cimentada sobre la roca de los apóstoles Nosotros, los cristianos católico creemos que: Dios se

ha revelado y se ha dado a conocer a nosotros por medio de Jesucristo, su Hijo.

Que el objetivo y fin de nuestra vida es conocer, amar y servir a Dios a través de nuestro culto y adoración a El y en el servicio y la entrega a nuestros hermanos.

¿Qué tenemos en común los católicos con los otros cristianos?

Igual que ellos creemos y reconocemos a Cristo como el Mesías Hijo de Dios, como Señor y Salvador, que por nosotros sufrió, murió en la cruz y que resucitó al tercer día.

Creemos que la Bíblia es la Palabra de Dios. ¿Qué nos diferencia a los católicos de otros cristianos? Reconocemos al Papa como cabeza de la Iglesia funda-

da por Cristo: “Yo te digo, tú eres Pedro y sobre esta pie-dra edificaré mi iglesia, y las puertas del infierno no prevalecerán contra ella Mt 16:18, Jesús le dijo: Apa-cienta mis ovejas, Jn 21, 17”.

Reconocemos también la autoridad de los Obispos para salvaguardar las verdades de la fe recibida.

vida para los demás, para las personas necesitadas aquí, ahora y en el futuro. Juntos, recemos para que el Espíritu Santo guíe nuestro camino y otorgue Su gracia sobre noso-tros mientras servimos a los demás. Por favor, oren por el éxito de nuestro llamado, que va más allá de nosotros mis-mos y nuestra parroquia, y da esperanza a miles a través de los diferentes ministerios, programas y servicios que enriquecen una forma de vida centrada en Cristo. Nuestro fin de semana de compromiso con la parroquia es el 3 y 4 de febrero. Traiga su tarjeta de intención desde su casa o el sobre de entrega en casa y en la iglesia en la misa y venga preparado para participar y ser parte de esta bendición.
