Community interest companies are a type of limited company designed specifically for those wishing to operate for the benefit of the community, rather than for the benefit of the owners of the company. Chapter, Crier and Bishop Press Editor, Stephanie Ellis said, “We are absolutely delighted to have been granted CIC status. “We have always been a not- for-profit company, however this legally enshrines our status and underlines our ongoing commitment to the community. “Our three newspapers are popular in their respective communities because they provide the kind of local service that is generally overlooked by the larger, profit-oriented papers. “Any income we make always goes back into providing the type of intimate service a local community needs.”

ideas are being brought to fruition.“The new equipment will be a welcome addition to the Doorstep Green which demonstrates just what can be achieved when the Town Council and local community work in part-nership together. “On behalf of both the Town Council and the Friends group I would like to say a huge thank you to the Big Lottery which has made this project possible.”

Community stalwart Margaret Taylor’s stomach was jumping at the thought of her royal ap-pointment.Margaret, 66, lives in Chilton and was nominated for a Durham County Council chairman’s medal for her work within the local community. The mother of four and grand-mother of three set up a community house in the town in 1998 when Chilton was still a village.Fourteen years later the building is the hub of the community and serves as a first stop shop for everyone’s needs providing coffee mornings, advice sessions and a food co-operative.

Area Action Partnership coordinator Lee Copeland, housing provider Livin and members of the local community got together to nominate Margaret for the chairman’s medal and all of the nominees from across the county were invited to Palace Green for Her Majesty’s royal visit. Margaret’s dedication was further recognised when she was picked out to then take part in the line up to meet Her Majesty and Prince Phillip.Margaret said: “It felt like there was nothing available in 1998 when the project started. All of a sudden we had this facility and it gave us something

to aim for, something better for the village and something to get excited about.“Now we have a community worker on hand to offer advice and a coffee morning which 20 people regularly come to as well as family history sessions and a food co-op. You don’t know who is going to come through the door but we try to help everyone in any way that we can.“It was incredible to meet the Queen, certainly not something you do every day. My stomach was jumping, Prince Phillip even said well done for my work within the community!”

By Royal Appointment for Margaret

Margaret Taylor is joined by her nominators, including AAP coordinator, Lee Copeland, outside the community house Margaret originally set up in 1998 to assist the Chilton community.

Sensational Local Female Artist“Aryana”

Police in County Durham are appealing for a young man who has gone missing to contact his family.Eighteen-year-old Kelvin Bradley has not returned to his home in Cleves Close, Ferryhill, since going out with friends in Newcastle on Saturday night.

Chief Inspector Graham Milne said: “Kelvin’s family are very worried about him as it is completely out of character for him not to return home, or to maintain contact with them. Also, he loves his job, but has not been into work at the graphic design company he is employed at in Hartlepool and, again, that is unusual. “I would urge Kelvin to contact his parents, or the police, so we can be reassured he is safe and well.”Chief Inspector Milne said enquiries suggested Kelvin was in the vicinity

of St James’ Park and the Leazes Park area of Newcastle at about 8pm on Saturday, 28 July and added: “If anyone thinks they have seen him or has any information at all regarding his whereabouts please get in touch with the police.”Kelvin is described as 6ft tall, clean shaven with brown hair.Anyone with information is urged to call the police direct on 0191 386 1470 or to use the non-emergency number 101 (select the ‘Durham’ option if you are calling from another force area).

Dear Editor,

It is pleasing that we can now report that further progress has been made in relation to the opening of the Ferryhill Community Hub. The sport-based education and training organisation, ‘Seconds Out’, are very busy fitting out the rooms they are to use and an agreement has been reached which could see the Bar Bistro opening at the beginning of September. Arrangements for fitness through dancing activities are now well advanced and the Ferryhill Bowls Club are to begin their summer/autumn programme at the beginning of August. Bookings for the large Sports Hall can now be made by contacting Councillor Brian Gibson on 01740 652743. Anyone who has previously stated that they would like to play 5-a-side football in the hall should now make a formal booking. Ferryhill Town Council was celebrating this week after being informed that it had been awarded five Green Flag awards. The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. The

award scheme began in 1996 as a means of recog-nising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country. It was also seen as a way of encourag-ing others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a

benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas. The Green Flag Award Scheme is managed in the UK by a consortium, comprising Keep Britain Tidy, The Conserva-tion Volunteers and

This year Ferryhill Town Council was awarded Green Flag status for Mainsforth Sports Complex, Duncombe Cemetery, Dean Bank Recreation Park, the Surtees Doorstep Green and King George V Playing Fields (Broom Rec).In addition to the five facilities receiving Green Flag status, the Town Council also provides many other community facilities and services including a youth café, allotments, flowerbeds, public toilets, market, street furniture and many local events including an annual Summer Gala and Christmas Fayre.Communities Minister, Andrew Stunell said: “Great parks and green spaces have a huge impact on local commu-nities, providing places to play and relax as well as bringing generations together in a variety of ways. They are fundamen-tal to our quality of life,

whether in cities, towns or villages, and the Green Flag Award scheme seeks to help raise the standards of them all. The many excellent stories coming from the scheme prove what communities and volunteers can achieve by working together with professionals in our green spaces. Well done to all those involved in creating these inspirational places for everyone to enjoy.”Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the achievements of all those whose hard work and dedication has helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy. “I must also thank all this year’s 800+ volunteer judges for their magnifi-cent efforts in assessing an astounding number of applications.”

Dear Editor,

At Ferryhill Station, near the Commercial Hotel, there is a grass triangle around a triangular flowerbed where three trees have thrived for many years.

Two of those trees bear blossom every year to the delight of the local people.

This year, however, the flowerbed looks dead with not even a weed after all the heavy rain.

The two blossom trees look as if they are dying, their twigs are easy to snap off.

If this is all down to nature then we have to accept it, but if this flowerbed has been sprayed with a strong solution of weed killer, strong enough to produce an adverse effect on the trees, then there is something wrong.

Time will tell.

Yours sincerely, Albert Curle,Ferryhill.

Kirk Watson will return before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe on 15th August having been released on unconditional bail. The 23-year-old, of Darlington Road, Ferryhill, had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage and another of assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty, in Shildon, on 14th July. At around 5pm that day, a witness watched from his vehicle as Watson behaved erratically before punching the wing mirror of a parked car, the owner of which, was known to the witness. The witness contacted the owner and both men followed Watson, who tried to gain entry to a house in Laurel Grove but was refused access, before they approached him and asked why he had caused the criminal damage.Watson replied by offering to fight and so the police were called. The officer attending then called for

further assistance and a caged vehicle arrived.Watson resisted officers’ efforts to get him into the van and spat twice, on the second occasion into an officer’s face. He was taken to Bishop Auckland Police Station where, in interview, Watson stated that he had been drinking with six other males since about 12.30pm and had consumed six cans of lager, which would normally not have affected him too much, leading him to believe that someone had spiked his drink, as he had no recollection of events. The court heard that the defendant, who is currently supervised by public protection, was in breach of a twelve months condi-tional discharge imposed in August last year and that he had served time in prison for an offence of grievous bodily harm. The Probation Service was requested to provide a full pre-sentence report and matters were adjourned.
