ENTER CIC have just returned from perform-ing at a number of WW1 Commemorative sites in Belgium.

The company were delighted to receive a per-sonal invite to perform at The Menin Gate (Ypres), St George’s Memorial Church (Flanders Field), Cloth Hall (Ypres) and Tal-bot House (Ypres).

The group consisted of young people and volun-teers from Ferryhill and

the surrounding areas who travelled to Belgium to perform in an array of high profile commemora-tive events.

In addition to the sched-uled performances our young people were also granted special permis-sion to perform at Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British and Common-wealth WW1 Memorial in the world.

A special honour was our young people singing

Silent Night on the very site where the Christmas Truce took place nearly 104 years earlier.

This was an unforget-table and very unique experience and one which moved everyone who saw and heard it.

Enter’s young people were approached by many people from different nationalities who were moved to tears by their performance, empathy and understanding and

since the visit they have been inundated with mes-sage from many people from a range of national-ities and Belgian dignitar-ies who were astounded by the power of the mes-sage that the young peo-ple conveyed.

The young people who attend Enter CIC have spent a considerable amount of time learn-ing about WW1 and then

ENTER CIC PERFORM AT MENIN GATEMembers of the Enter CIC cast performed a specially written piece at the Menin Gate in Ypres.“the next board

meeting will be on Wednesday 5th September, between 6pm and 8pm

RESIDENTS FROM Ferry-hill, Chilton, Bishop Mid-dleham and West Corn-forth can find out how local issues are being tackled when the local area action partnership holds their next meeting.

The 4 Together Part-nership will be holding their next board meeting on Wednesday 5th Sep-tember, between 6pm and 8pm, at Dean Bank & Ferryhill Literary Insti-tute, and local people are invited to go along to observe proceedings.

Board members will be receiving an update at the meeting from a senior officer in relation to coun-cil budgets.

head of children’s social care, said: “We are always striving to broaden our base of foster carers and, as such, we welcome enquiries from anyone, whether families, single parents, same sex cou-ples or individuals.

“What matters to us is whether someone has the patience and skills to offer a vulnerable child a loving and stable home.”

The number of children coming into the care system in the north east has risen by 50 per cent since 2010, higher than in any other area of the country.

Nationally, there are 72,670 looked after chil-

dren, including more than 800 in County Durham.

The council is particu-larly interested in foster carers who can provide loving homes for broth-ers and sisters so that they can stay together and teenagers and chil-dren with complex needs as well as carers who are able to offer a child a fam-ily home throughout their childhood.

For more information, visit www.durham.gov.uk/fostering or call 03000 269 400.

COULD YOU be the rea-son a child in care can look forward to a brighter future?

Durham County Council is hosting three drop-in events next month for people considering becoming foster carers.

Existing foster carers will be on hand to talk about their experiences during the sessions, which will take place on the following dates:• Monday, 10th Septem-

ber – 4.30pm to 6.30pm at County Hall;

• Saturday, 22nd Septem-ber – 10am to 1.30pm at County Hall;

• Thursday, 27th Septem-ber – 11am to 1pm at Durham Town Hall.The events are part

of the council’s Be The Reason campaign, which aims to dispel some of the myths around foster-ing and encourage people from all backgrounds to come forward as poten-tial foster carers.

contractor, Rainton Con-struction, sources the plastic from a Scottish company, MacRebur Lim-ited. MacRebur has devel-oped a process of turning waste packaging and insulation that wouldn’t normally be recycled into a plastic crumb which can be mixed into the asphalt.

This reduces the amount of new bitumen that is required and reduces the carbon footprint of road resurfacing by, on aver-age, a tonne of carbon dioxide for every tonne of bitumen that would have been used.

In this scheme, the council used 6.5 tonnes of plastic which is the equiv-alent of 60,000 plastic shopping bags.

The company also claims that its system makes the road surface – which looks no different to a normal road - more durable and longer last-ing.

David Wykes, MacRe-bur’s business develop-ment manager, said: “We have supplied our prod-ucts to a number of local authorities in the UK and internationally but this resurfacing scheme in County Durham is the largest we have been

involved with in England.“The key thing about

the polymers that we use is that they are difficult to recycle back in to their original forms, due to contamination with other plastics.

“However our prod-ucts are able to use mix-tures of these polymers, which can then be added to asphalts, helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, reduce the demands on fossil fuel bitumen and the amount of plastic that would usu-ally be disposed of.”

Dave Elliott, manag-ing director at Rainton Construction, said: “We are delighted to be work-ing jointly with Durham County Council and Mac-Rebur in this exciting and innovative approach to road surfacing. We look forward to rolling out the ‘plastic’ approach in other highway schemes in the coming years.”

Resurfacing of the A689 near Sedgefield took place between the But-terwick junction and the county boundary.

Anyone wanting to find out more about the plastic road scheme can watch a video at durham.gov.uk/ar ticle/19124/-Plastic -roads-trialled-in-County-Durham.

MOTORISTS ON the A689 near Sedgefield in County Durham are now driving along a “plastic road.”

Durham County Council is the first local authority in the North East to try out a new technology as part of recently completed work to resurface a sec-tion of the A689 with hot rolled asphalt.

John Reed, the coun-cil’s head of technical services, said: “We have a continuous programme of resurfacing to maintain the condition of our road network.

“We’re always interested in any innovative tech-nology that improves our roads and makes them more environmentally friendly.

“In this trial, we incorpo-rated waste plastics into the asphalt instead of tra-ditional bitumen.

“This will help divert plastics that are difficult to recycle from incin-eration and landfill and reduce our carbon emis-sions.

“We are confident that this new technology will perform at least as well as the conventional method.”

Traditionally the surface of the county’s roads is made up of stone aggre-gates with a bitumen binder to hold the asphalt

poetry cornerRemember?

By Geoff Gregg, Tursdale

Remember when Friday night was bath night in an old tin tub on the floor? Making sure the curtains were drawn and the bolt securely in the door,

Remember when Monday was wash day and the rollers had to be turned by hand? Washing got tangled up and knotted and that was certainly not very grand, Remember when chimneys caught fire and streets were covered in smoke?

People coughed and spluttered as though they were going to choke, Remember when we only had BBC1 on a seventeen inch black and white screen?

More often than not the test card was all that could be seen, Remember when our shoes wore out and at the

cobblers we had them soled and heeled? Galoshes we wore over the top of them in the snow or in a muddy field,

Remember when you could see the doctor without an appointment or he saw you on his morning round?

We eagerly listened for his knock on the door, a very welcome sound, Remember when the Colliery buzzer each hour piercing through the air?

Telling us the time wherever we were, Remember when there was no self-service at shops, petrol stations and the like?

An assistant served you with groceries or filled up the tank of your car or bike, Remember when almost everyone went to Blackpool for

their holidays in a boarding house near the sea? Now almost everyone goes abroad for holidays wherever that may be,

It’s nice to look back and remember, some things still make more sense,One thing I liked in particular was when we had pounds, shillings and pence!

really understanding the impact of it on yesteryear and today’s society.

Prior to visiting Belgium the group had participated in a number of workshops conducted by the Green Howards Museum, Heugh Battery Museum and an array of ex-service person-nel.

As a result, they have an long-lasting respect for those who have served in the past and continue to serve their country.

This was clearly demon-strated in all of their performances and the overwhelming response from local dignitaries and attendees at the Menin Gate performances.

Mrs Patricia Hawkins, Lay Vice Chair of St George’s Memorial Church said: “How can we ever put into words the emotion we have witnessed today in this heartfelt perfor-mance. Thank you.”

Church Warden, Mr Peter Hawkins added: “Thank

you so much for an inspi-rational and moving per-formance. You were all amazing. What can I say, I was totally moved to tears.”

Enter CIC Director, Andrea Flynn said: “Our commemorative perfor-mance at The Menin Gate was made all the more special because Enter CIC was given special permis-sion to sing two of their own compositions at the Last Post ceremony.

“This is a rare and spe-cial honour.

“Due to requests from people at the Menin Gate who wanted to purchase Carved in Stone, by Paul Flynn, this track has been recorded by Enter CIC’s young people and is now available from all online music stores, including iTunes, Spotify and Ama-zon Music.

“Enter CIC also took with them three Tommy sol-diers, donated by FerryDec and made by Endeavour Woodcrafts.

“Our staff, volunteers

and young people were proud to display the fig-ures, and did so at most of the memorial sites.

“This project began because Enter’s young people were concerned that many of their peers did not connect with the act of Remembrance.

“They wanted to engage in a project that would develop their personal understanding, but also provide them with the knowledge that would enable them to create their own commemorative performance.

“This will be used to teach and engage other young people who have yet to learn the full signif-icance of the sacrifices made 100 years ago and the sacrifices being made in our own time.”

Enter will be performing at a number of commem-orative events leading up to Remembrance Day.

Keep checking their website (entercic.org) and Facebook page (@entercic) for details.

corporate director for chil-dren and young people’s services, said: “We’d like to congratulate students for these brilliant results which come amid the most significant changes in the exam system since O-levels were replaced in 1987.

“GCSEs are now widely regarded as tougher as the national intention is that they be of the same standard as the highest achieving countries in education such as Singa-pore and Finland.

“This makes our stu-dents’ improved perfor-mance on last year all the more pleasing.”

Cllr Olwyn Gunn, Cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “We are delighted that our young people have worked so hard to achieve these excellent

results. I congratulate them and the teaching staff in all of our schools.

“It is hard for this cohort of pupils as they are the first to experience these new tougher exams, but we hope future employers will take the time to under-stand and appreciate their efforts with the removal of coursework and more dif-ficult questions.

“We also recognise and greatly value the support and encouragement given by our schools, parents and carers.”

STUDENTS ACROSS County Durham have won praise for their GCSE performance in the face of major changes to the exams.

The majority of GCSE courses are now giving pupils a 1-9 grade with a level 4 being deemed as a ‘pass’ which is similar to the old ‘C’ grade and level 5 as a ‘good pass.’

County Durham stu-dents got their results this month with 62 per cent achieving level 4 or above in both English and maths.

While national figures are not yet known, the results represent a major improvement on last year.

Similarly the number of students achieving a level 5 in both English and maths has significantly improved on 2017.

that leaves competitors breathing hard and smil-ing harder.

In 2017 hundreds of peo-ple turned up at the park to battle the icy waters and imposing tunnels and this year it’s expected there will be even more.

Cllr Ossie Johnson, Cab-inet member for tourism, culture, leisure, and rural affairs, said: “Muddy Mayhem is always a pop-ular event and it’s great to hear about people taking part year after year.

“The course has grown substantially over the past seven years and promises to be both test-ing and fun, making it a great day out.

“Places are filling up fast, with some waves already sold out so I’d rec-ommend anyone thinking about taking part to sign up quickly.”

The event, which is for those aged 16 and over, is scheduled to begin at 10am with the runners setting off in waves every twenty minutes until 2pm.

Registration for the 5k course costs £43.

For more information or to sign up, visit durham.gov.uk/muddymayhem or e-mail muddymayhem [email protected].

MUDDY MAYHEM, the North East’s most exhil-arating obstacle course had sold out its 10k run, but there’s still time to register for the 5k event.

The North East’s ulti-mate obstacle course is back at Hardwick Park, Sedgefield for its seventh year on Sunday 30th Sep-tember.

The 5km circuit features elements of horse trials, motocross, rock climb-ing, military obstacle courses and adventure playgrounds and incorpo-rates over 40 man-made and natural obstacles.

Dawn Watson and her friends have taken part in the event for the past three years and can’t wait to complete it again in September.

She said: “We booked up pretty much straight after last year’s event in October.

“We simply love doing it as a team. Dressing up and being able to run through fire! I mean how often can you dress as a Minion and run over hot fire!”

Muddy Mayhem started in 2012 as a 2.5km course, but has since grown into a unique, chal-lenging and fun event
