T HERE IS part of the Gospel between last week’s and this weeks which has fallen through the cracks and is needed to make sense of the two. John says to those who come to be baptised by him, ‘Who warned you to flee from the coming retribution? Produce fruit in keeping with your repentance... even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees.’ It is to this message that the people respond by asking John what must they do then to produce the fruit of repentance. John’s answer proved what a practical, down- to-earth person he was. Christianity is a very practical and social religion. It is so easy to forget that it isn’t just about God and me, but it is a matter of God, me and others. But it is also so easy to join the ranks of the ‘activists’ and reduce Christianity to ‘doing good’. Some of us will remember the classic children’s books of the past where each story had a moral. The Christianity presented in them was to do good things, to be polite and courteous, to be courageous, to stand up for the underdog and to be loyal to your friends. But that is only part of the whole. Something drew the crowds to John the Baptist, and then after him to Jesus. It takes more than mere fear of damnation, the end of time and of judgement (which, after all, seem to be comfortably far-away threats) to make a person repent and want to follow the Baptist’s practical advice. Something about being with John drew people to change their hearts. Repent – to turn about, to retrace ones steps is connected to another phrase in Acts 3:19 – turn to God. Even more so with Jesus, they sensed life in him, a life which reached out and refreshed – even re-lifed – them. It is the encounter with the living Christ, the joy the likes of which we have never experienced before, which makes it possible to live the life to which John points. Sharing our material good with those in need, refusing to take advantage of others, being generous can have two motives. One is for our own ego – look what a good person am I! I have done such unselfish, generous things. God must reward me. [Lk 18:9-12] Or our discovery, especially through prayer, of how much God loves us individually, can impel us to respond to his love. Our lives become a return of love for love received, as St Alphonsus put it. We try to see Christ in those around us and do what we can for them as though we were doing it for Christ. We can see whatever good we do as being possible not because we are such great people, but because God gave us the gift to be who we are in the first place. Our so-called good work then becomes our way of expressing our love for God. And in so doing, we discover ‘joy’, not the shallow self-satisfaction of pleasure, of doing what we want, but the joy that comes from being one with God.

THERE IS part of the Gospel between last week’s and this weeks which has fallen through the cracks and is needed to make

sense of the two. John says to those who come to be baptised by him, ‘Who warned you to flee from the coming retribution? Produce fruit in keeping with your repentance... even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees.’

It is to this message that the people respond by asking John what must they do then to produce the fruit of repentance.

John’s answer proved what a practical, down-to - ea r t h per son he was . Chr is t iani t y is a very practical and social religion.

But that is only part of the whole.Something drew the crowds to John the

Baptist, and then af ter him to Jesus.

Even
