A. What is Zoom?

Zoom is a virtual classroom tool used by SUSS instructors to deliver lessons

synchronously to their students without the need for them to be physically present

in the classroom. This platform provides instructors with an interactive, real-time

teaching environment by offering built-in tools such as sharing of

application/video, annotation, online chats and polling. Recordings of the virtual

classroom sessions can be easily done by the instructor and made available to

students in Canvas for self-learning and review.

B. Technical Requirements

Mac OS System

Google Chrome (on Windows)

Safari on Mac

iii. Software

Install before launching any session

Download Zoom Client for Meetings at https://zoom.us/download

iv. Devices USB Headset (Recommended)

USB Web Cam (Optional)

Devices must be plugged into the computing system before accessing Zoom.

Zoom might not be able to detect any devices plugged in after entering the

virtual class session.

A. Access Canvas

1. Navigate to https://canvas.suss.edu.sg via Google Chrome/Safari browser.

B. Joining a Virtual Class / Office

1. Ensure that your USB headset is connected to your computer. Go to the desired

course site under “Courses” to access the Zoom session. Example:

LSA102_JAN20_T01

2. Click on “Virtual Class” on the left menu.

For online courses by OLE, this menu is called Online Seminar.

3. Click on “Join” next to the meeting name.

4. For Windows, a prompt for launching Zoom will appear.

Click on “Open URL:Zoom Launcher”.

If you have not downloaded the Windows Zoom Launcher, refer to Appendix A

page 30.

5. For Mac, a prompt for launching Zoom will appear.

Click on “Open zoom.us”.

If you have not downloaded the Mac Zoom Launcher, refer to Appendix A page

26.

6. Enter the “meeting password”. Your lecturer will inform the class of the

meeting password either through the course’s Announcement, SUSS email

or any other modes of communication.

8. If you see the panel below, please wait for the lecturer to start the meeting.

9. Zoom is now launched. Click on “Test Speaker and Microphone” to test

your audio and microphone.

10. If you are able to hear the ringtone, click on “Yes”.

11. If you are not able to hear the ringtone, choose your audio from the

dropdown list.

12. Speak to your microphone. If you are able to hear yourself, click on “Yes”.

14. Click on “Join with Computer Audio”.

15. Click on “Join with Computer Audio” again to connect to the Zoom

meeting’s audio.

C. Broadcasting Audio and Video

Students are allowed to talk on the microphone when instructor assign the

permission to students.

The instructor has the prerogative to override the above permission and disallow

students to talk on the microphone.

1. If you have been granted permission to speak through the microphone, you

will receive a consent prompt below. Click on “Unmute” to speak.

2. If you do not wish to speak, click on “Stay muted”.

3. You are now able to speak through your microphone. To mute yourself again,

click on the “Mute” button.

Students are allowed to broadcast webcam video when instructor assign the

permission to students.

4. If you have been given the permission to broadcast your webcam video, you

will receive the confirmation prompt below. Click on “Start My Video” to

broadcast your webcam video.

D. Chat

Students are allowed to chat with each other when instructor assign the

permission to students.

The instructor has the prerogative to override the above permission and disallow

chat among students.

1. To start chatting, click on “Chat”.

2. The “Zoom Group Chat” panel will appear on the left section of the Zoom

Landing Page.

3. To send a chat, click on “Type message here…” to type your message and

press the “Enter” button on your keyboard to send the message to the

students.

E. Polling

Students can response to poll questions in the Zoom Meeting.

Please note that Polling will not be recorded.

1. To respond to the polling, select your answer by clicking on the checkbox

next to the answer.

F. Screen Sharing

Instructor might give any selected student, the permissions to share desktop,

applications and whiteboard.

The selected student can then share an application or his/her desktop from own

computer system.

i. Basic Screensharing

1. Desktop and Application Sharing

The Desktop and Application sharing selection will share your computer screen

or its applications to the participants.

Do note that all participants will be able to see everything displayed on your

computer if you choose Desktop sharing. Before sharing your Desktop, do ensure

that confidential documents are not open.

1. To enable the Desktop sharing, click on “Desktop”.

2. Click on “Share Screen”.

3. To enable the Application Sharing, click on application name.

For example: Microsoft Powerpoint.

4. Click on “Share Screen”.

5. Zoom will minimize and the Zoom panel will appear in the screen share.

6. A new option called “Annotate” will be made available. Annotate allows you

to draw and add texts to the screen share. To start annotating, click on

“Annotate”.

7. The annotation menu will appear. Click on the tool, i.e., “Draw” to start

annotating.

8. To end the Desktop or Application Sharing, click on “Stop Share”.

2. Whiteboard Sharing

The Whiteboard feature will allow you to share a whiteboard that you can

annotate on.

1. To share the Whiteboard, click on “Whiteboard”.

2. Click on “Share Screen”.

3. The Whiteboard will appear with the annotation menu. Click on the annotation

tool for example, “Draw”, to start annotating.

4. To end the Whiteboard sharing, click on “ ”.

3. Screensharing with iOS

Zoom allows for iOS screen sharing from iPhone and iPad, using the Zoom

desktop client. You can share wirelessly for both Mac and PC, utilizing iOS

Screen Mirroring,

1. To share the iOS screen, click on “iPhone/iPad”.

2. Click on “Share Screen”.

3. A set of instructions will be prompted. You will need to follow each step to

enable the screensharing feature.

4. Ensure that your computer and iOS device are connected to the same Wifi. On

your iOS device, tap on “Settings”.

5. Tap on “Wi-Fi”

6. Tap on Wi-Fi name, for example: SIM_WiFi and connect.

7. Swipe your finger from the bottom edge of the screen upwards to the top to

access the Control Centre.

8. Tap on “Screen Mirroring”.

9. Select the connection with “Zoom” in its title. For example: Zoom-muhammad.

10. The iOS Screen is now being shared.

11. Annotation is available within the green border for the iOS screen sharing. To

access the annotation tool, click on “Annotate”.

12. Click on the tool, i.e., “Draw” to start annotating.

13. To end the iOS Screen Sharing, click on “Stop Share”.

i. Advanced Screensharing

1. Portion of Screen

You will be sharing a section of the screen. The shared section will be stationary

and anything that appears within the section will be shared to the participants.

1. To share a portion of the screen, click on “Portion of Screen”.

2. Click on “Share”.

3. A green bordered box will appear.

4. Anything that appears within the green box will be shared to the students.

2. Computer Sound Only

You will only be sharing your computer audio. Students will only be able to hear

any sound that you play on your computer without any visual presentation.

1. To share your computer audio, click on “Computer Sound Only”.

2. Click on “Share”.

3. Click on “OK”. You are now sharing your computer audio with your

students.

3. Content from 2nd Camera

If you have connected a visualizer or a secondary camera to your computer,

Zoom will be able to share the video output screen to the students. Ensure that

you have already connected your visualizer to the computer.

1. After connecting the camera device to your computer, click on “Content from

G. Retrieval of recorded session

The recorded session will be ready for playback within 8 hours. To view the

recording, students will need to login to their Zoom account. If you have not

created a Zoom account, please proceed to page 33.

1. Go to the desired course site that contains the Zoom recording.

For example: LSA101_JAN20_T01

2. Click on “Virtual Class” on the left menu.

3. Click on “Cloud Recordings”.

4. Click on the recording topic.

APPENDIX B: Screensharing with PowerPoint

You will need to disable “Use Presenter View” in order to present your PPT

slides in Zoom.

1. Under Microsoft Powerpoint, click on “Slide Show”

2. Uncheck on “Use Presenter View”.

This will disable the presenter view when screensharing your Powerpoint

application.

APPENDIX C: Creating a Zoom account

Students will need to have a Zoom account to view the past Zoom recordings.

Follow the steps below to create a free Zoom account.

1. Go to suss.zoom.us

2. Click on “Sign in”.

3. Click on “Sign Up free”.

4. Verify your date of birth.

5. Click on “Continue”.

6. Enter your SUSS email.

7. Click on “Sign Up”.

8. Zoom will send an email to your SUSS email to activate your account. Please

follow the instructions indicated on the email to join the SUSS Zoom network.
