It has been a busy 6 months since you last heard from us all here at Zoë’s Place and we have tried to squeeze as much in to this edition as possible. Unfortunately we never have enough space within our magazine to acknowledge all of our wonderful supporters but more details can be found by visiting our website www.zoes-place.org/liverpool which is constantly updated with fundraising news and events. You can also follow us on facebook and twitter. I would like to make a special mention of a fantastic donation that we have recently received here at the hospice. Lifelites are an award winning national charity who help support UK children’s hospices by raising funds to purchase specialist technology. We were overwhelmed by a fantastic technology package donated by Lifelites to Zoë’s Place which includes: a 23” touch screen computer with a huge range of software, specialist toys and cameras. This package will of course be used for play but the interaction will greatly aid learning, development and communication skills as the items are designed to build an understanding of cause and effect. Our package was specifically supported by West Lancashire Freemasons and we were delighted to welcome Barry Jameson to Zoë's Place to see first hand the equipment and find out about the difference this will make to our children. This donation has also been made thanks to the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity who have made a substantial donation to Lifelites so that they are able to support hospices like ours. Pip Tyler, Vice Chair of The Thomas Cook Children's Charity said, “The technology Lifelites provides has such a positive impact on both the children and their families and we're thrilled that we can help them offer this to more and more hospices throughout the UK.” Our donors have contributed in so many ways towards the work of the Hospice, be it time, expertise, energy or funds. We are so grateful to everyone who continues to make Zoë’s Place Liverpool such a wonderful place for our special babies to come and stay. Carol Kirkham, Fundraising Manager P.S Children’s Hospice Week takes place this year from 26 April - 3 May and culminates with Superhero Friday - a special hero inspired day of fundraising. Up and down the country, childrens hospices will run fundraising events and activities and it provides a great opportunity for you to raise funds for your local children's hospice. fundraisingMESSAGE FROM FLO, HEAD OF CARESince the last edition of SMILE, it has been really busy here in the Hospice, but as youwill see below our children have had a fantastic Christmas and our Sensory Garden isnow open and in use for our children to use. For this year we are aim to continue toimprove on the facilities we are able to offer not only to the children but also their familiesthrough upgrades to our family accommodation and parents room.

Queenies Christmas PartyWeare so grateful to all the individualswho donate as it allows us tocare for the children and also create lastingmemories for thefamilies. In Decemberwe held our annual Christmas party for thechildren coming to Zoë’s Place and their families. Thiswas funded andorganised by our very good friendHerbert Howe and his charityQueenies Christmaswhich does a huge amount to supportmanyworthy causes. The partywas amassive success andwaswithout adoubt the biggest partywe have had! The children had a fabulousmagical time and therewas even a few tears of joy shed! We are sograteful toHerbert for his generous support.

Sensory GardenOur sensory garden has been designed and renovatedthrough the support of LaingO’ Rourke and as a result offundingmade by Liverpool Primary Care Trust’sNaturalChoices grant schemeand through funds raised by theLiverpool OneChurch. This garden previouslywas emptyand uninspiring. The garden has nowbeen transformed intoa special gardenwhere the children can play, explore andenjoy the plants and flowers. We arewaiting for the spring toarrive sowe can enjoy the garden and lovelyweather!

Parents Pamper DayWehave held a pamper day for themumsat the hospiceas a special treat formothers day. They enjoyedrelaxing holistic treatments and refreshments, but italso provided an opportunity to chat to the othermums.Wewere able to off this day due to the therapistsproviding their time and skills at no cost.

Lacys StoryLacywas born 16th September 2010with two rare brain conditions, DandyWalker andPeriventricularHetitopia. Lacy's conditionsmean she has very poormotor developmentskills, has to have all fluids via aMickyButton, and her brain activity is extremely activewhich results in long periods of very poor sleep patterns. Her long termconditions at thistime are unknowndue to how rare her conditions are and doctors and care specialists canonly presumeon probability but there is a possibility that shewill develop ADHDandEpilepsy.

Caring for Lacy can be very tiring and difficult and as she has three other siblings the balance at timesbecomes uncontrollable. Zoë's Place has been there from the start for us and the support they have givento us could never bemeasured and to use theword pricelesswould not seemenough. Not only does therespite give us time to re-charge, but the one-to-one care Lacy receives has helped her developmentamazingly. The staff at Zoë's aremore than just staff they have become family and provide care and suportto thewhole family. Sadly the same services are often very difficult to gain through theNHS.

It frightensme to imagine lifewithout Zoë's Place and this im surewould be felt by all familieswho useZoë’s Place.

Bella Roses StoryMyname is Samantha. I ammummy toBella Rosewho is nownearly 14months old. Atmy 20week scan it was picked up that Bella had skeletaldysplasia a formof dwarfismand then that Bella hadOsteogenesisImperfecta type 3, commonly known as brittle boneswhichmeans herbones fracture very easily and oftenwith no apparent reason. Bella is avery happy, bubbly little baby and has the sweetest, funniest littlepersonality, she is so clever and so bright. She loves being inwaterwhetherthat’s in the bath or the hydrotherapy pool at Zoë’s place.

We absolutely love Zoë's place and it is the only time I'm100%comfortablebeing away fromBella that I'm confident she's in the safest hands possible.I just knowby howexcitedBella getswhen she gets there that shehas somuch fun and she adores everyone there, she loves all theattention. It was so hard in the early stages of Bella's diagnosis andIwas finding it really difficult emotionally and physically caring forBella onmy own. Zoë's place offeredme respite and it has been aGod send for simple things that you take for granted like, sleep, shopping and even cleaning that'smade difficult when you have achildwith a very serious condition. I consider all staff at Zoë's as anextended family and am forever grateful to everybody there for alltheir love and support and formaking life a little easier forme andsomuchmore fun for Bella, its our home fromhome. We arealwaysmadewelcomeand there is always time for a coffee andchat. The charity deserves all the support it can get and the staff asindividuals deserve all the praise I can give them. I'm so grateful toeach and everyone of them for all the kindness they've shown tomeandBella xxx

BIKE VIETNAM and CAMBODIA 15th - 24th November 2014How time flies! It seems like only yesterday but more than a year has passed since 20 brave participants jettedoff to Cuba to complete an epic challenge cycling 250 miles to raise funds for our hospice.

Our next challenge takes us through two of South East Asia’s most fascinating countries which have onlyopened up to foreign travellers in recent years. Starting in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and finishing atAngkor Wat in Cambodia, we’ll experience breathtaking scenery, timeless traditions, ancient temples and thewarmth of the local people.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?You will have to buy a bike if you haven’t already got one! This challenge is not easy. You will cycle an average of50 miles per day over a five day period on mountain bikes over some rugged terrain. You will have to train formonths and be really focused, it’s not just a holiday. We are also asking each participant to pay a £400 nonrefundable registration fee and then raise a further sponsorship of £2,800 but don’t worry, you will have plentyof time and we will be on hand to help support your fundraising every step of the way!

HOW LONG AM I AWAY FOR?The trip is 10 days long but the actual cycling is condensed to 5 days. The rest of the time is for travel and alsosightseeing. There is also an option to extend your stay just for ‘holiday time’ if you wish.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?Because the trip is some time away it will give you a real opportunity to get yourself fit. You will also have somegreat fun in getting your sponsorship money together whether it’s putting on a Karaoke night or sitting in a bathof baked beans! Between now and November 2014 you will always have the trip in the back of your mind. It’shard work raising the money and even harder work getting to the level of fitness but you WILL find that you willcome out of it as a better person.

There is no upper limit on what you can raise… keep going! - For more information please contact JohnMcCormack on 0151 228 0353/ 0755 701 9992 or email [email protected]

The company was introduced to Zoë’s Place anumber of years ago and were responsible for the major refurbishment and relocation of our hospiceto far larger and more accessible space on the ground floor of our building which since completion has and willcontinue to benefit our special babies.

Zoes Place Christmas Events - Our activities over the festive seasononce again proved to be a huge success. Our Light up a Life campaign is a special way toremember a loved one and frommembers of the community sponsoring lights on ourtrees around the city we have been able to raise in excess £5,000. We were also delightedto hold our very first Light up a Life service at St Mary’s Church in West Derby for familiesto come together and celebrate.
