In July our amazing supporters at Arriva Northwest unveiled a bus dedicated to Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice. The double decker bus, sporting the colours and logos of the Hospice is currently operating on numerous routes across the City from the Arriva Northwest Bootle depot, have you spotted it yet!

The next few months heralds the start of our extremely busy and exciting Christmas period with numerous events taking place. During that period we celebrate Hospice Care Week, which takes place 6 – 12 October. This is an annual week of activity to help raise the profile of hospice care across the UK. The aim for 2014 is to raise public

awareness about the many ways in which hospice care is delivered. Our donors have contributed in so many ways towards the work of the Hospice, be it time, expertise, energy or funds. We are so grateful to everyone who continues to make Zoë’s Place Liverpool such a wonderful place for our special babies to come and stay.

Hi, my name is Aimee and I am mum to two wonderful boys, Archie who is almost 5, and Stanley who is almost 2. A few weeks after Stanley was born in November 2012 he was rushed to Alder Hey Children’s hospital unable to breathe for himself; maintain his own body temperature and having seizures. He was diagnosed with having viral meningo-encephalitis. After defying the odds and pulling through Stanley was left with complex medical and care needs. He is now fed through a tube in his tummy as he is unable to swallow safely, has chronic inflammatory lung disease which requires daily chest physiotherapy and intermittent oxygen, as well as regular nebulisers and numerous antibiotics. As a result of his illness Stanley’s development is significantly delayed. Looking after Stanley in the early days was almost impossible. It wasn’t until we started visiting Zoë’s Place that we could see any light at the end of the tunnel. Stanley started spending time at Zoë’s Place when he was 8 months old. It’s hard to find the words to describe what Zoë’s Place means to our family. They have been a life line to us all, not just in providing second to none care for Stanley, but also enabling Archie to spend some quality time with his Mummy and Daddy, which can be very difficult when Stanley is at home needing care around the clock. The respite allows us time to catch up on the every day tasks that can often get missed as well as getting some much needed sleep! Zoë’s Place really is a ‘home from home’ and everyone is so welcoming that we really feel part of a large extended family. Thank you Zoë’s Place.

We went to see the famous Giants that visited Liverpool. The atmosphere was spectacular and the children thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it with front row viewing of the Giants in action.

We have enjoyed a lovely summer at Zoë’s place this year and have taken full advantage of the fabulous weather by taking our babies out and about on numerous trips.

We also went to Apple Jacks farm and enjoyed many of their activities from the tractors to the maze which was really good fun!

One of our most memorable days was when we had a visit from singer song writer ‘Passenger’. He came to perform for one of our children as a special wish that was requested by his parents. He came and sang, what a very emotional performance, not a dry eye in the house!

Although we have not had the luxury of an outside pool the children have enjoyed many hours of relaxation and physio in our hydro therapy pool. Our Physiotherapist Lorraine and our new Play Leader Gillian have had fun splashing around and enjoying the bubbles with many of the children who find great comfort and therapeutic relaxation from the hydro-pool. After this they always enjoy the slumber party watching their favourite DVD.

Stanley’s mum, dad and friends (see p.2) organized and completed an epic challenge to raise funds for Zoë’s Place. On Sunday 18th May they set off in the early hours from Wales on a 26 mile marathon kayak along the River Dee to the Groves in Chester. They then made their way to Chester Race Course to complete the Chester Half Marathon and then followed this up with a further 26 mile cycling marathon up onto the Wirral and through to Zoe’s Place. This all totaled a colossal 65 miles kayaking, running, walking and cycling in one day!

Tri4Stanley aimed to raise £10,000 for Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice. In total they raised over £11,500

Huge thank you to Jason, Martyn and

Chris who took part in the Wirral Coastal

Walk last May walking 15miles from

Seacombe to Thurstatson. The boys raised

a staggering £1,068 for our Hospice. Well

done boys on your remarkable fundraising.

Congratulations to our brave abseilers who undertook a 150’ freefall abseil down the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. The weather was truly horrendous but our participants were not put off and smiled their way through the rain. Thank you John McConnell, Emma Moulton, Nicola Churchman, David Lewis, Elaine Jones, Michelle Bentley, Gary Campbell, Nicole Campbell, Amanda Phillips, Mandy Eglinton and Nathan Murphy x

In Reach of St Polycarps is a fantastic book written by one of our supporters, Billy Booth. The story is a wonderful account of the innocent times of 1950’s and 1960’s Liverpool and is based on a family brought up in and around Great Homer Street/Netherfield Road/Scotland Road. You can purchase a copy of the book from our Hospice for £6.95, all proceeds to Zoë’s Place. To order please call 0151 228 0353.

We were invited down to TK Maxx in Speke to

receive a cheque for £1,000 that was made

to our hospice to help support the vital care

that we provide to our special babies. Since

first launching in the UK in 1994 the designer

‘brands-for-less’ retailer now has over 270

stores and support many worthy causes around

the country so we would like say thank you to

the team based at the store at Speke Retail

Park for choosing Zoë’s Place as their charity.

Our wonderful friends at the newly refurbished Sainsbury’s store on Rice Lane have chosen Zoë’s Place as their charity of the year! We attended the official opening of store back in August and helped to bag pack on their first day which was a great success. The bag pack heralds the start of our year-long partnership with Sainsburys and we look forward to working together on lots more fundraising activities.

Jack has been really busy selling his fantastic

poetry book ‘Always Look on the Bright Side’ and

has raised a wonderful £314.00 for our special

babies. The book was dedicated to Jack’s baby

cousin, Olivia who suffered with Mitochondrial

Depletion Syndrome, a very rare genetic disorder

and she was cared for by nurses at Zoë’s Place

but sadly passed away aged 1.

We were so grateful to once again receive the very kind support of Ladies and Captains teams of the West Derby Golf club who have been very busy over the past 12 months raising funds for our hospice through all kinds of different activities. Club Captain John Leight and Ladies Captain Jill Hopwood came down to Zoë’s Place to present us with a fantastic cheque for £2,063.43 which brings the grand total raised by the club since 2009 to over £22,000. Thank you once again for your support.

Our thanks to everyone who has helped

to support our hospice as part of the

National Citizen Service. There have

been all kinds of wonderful fundraising

activities from bag packs to fancy dress

runs that have helped to generate much

needed funds for our charity. Thank you

everyone!

In the run up to Christmas, Kiddieland in Kirkdale are supporting our hospice with a fantastic Christmas raffle.
