Name: ___________________________________________________ Block: ____________________ Studio Art Dorofy/Duckworth/Gordon/Sanders Zentangle Colors WHAT IS A ZENTANGLE? Miniature pieces of unplanned, abstract art created in a very structured method from a series of repetitive patterns on a square paper tile. The process is a form of “artistic meditation” as one becomes completely engrossed in making each pattern, deliberately focusing on “one stroke at a time”. The creativity options and pattern combinations are boundless. And anyone can do it successfully! TASK: This project will test your knowledge and application of the color wheel and five main color schemes. Specifically, you will be creating five different Zentangle designs and then filling each in with a specific color scheme using colored pencils. Your five designs will include: three with the letters of your initials and two with straight Zentangle designs. WHAT YOU WILL DO: 1. Learn and review the five main color schemes used in art. 2. Learn about Zentangles and how to create them. 3. Practice creating Zentangles as a meditative exercise. You should create at least 6 different practice designs on the sheet provided. Be sure to experiment with different types of lines and shapes. 4. Once you’ve gotten the hang of the process, create 4 different potential final Zentangle patterns. Your final designs will be slightly larger than the practice ones. 5. Choose your best TWO designs and use a light box, or the window, to transfer those two designs onto final pieces of drawing paper. 6. Use a computer and PowerPoint to choose a font and design your letters for your Zentangle initials… OR, you can create your own letter fonts. 7. Print your letters (if using the computer) and trace them onto the final drawing paper, and then create a Zentangle pattern inside and around each letter. 8. Use colored pencils to add color to each design using a specific color scheme: a) Monochromatic Color Scheme using one color of your choice. b) Complementary Color Scheme using two complementary colors of your choice. c) Split Complementary Color Scheme using a color of your choice and the two colors adjacent to its complementary. d) Analogous Color Scheme using your choice of three colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. e) Triadic Color Scheme using three colors of your choice that are equally spaced on the color wheel. 9. Once all 5 designs are complete with color, you will mount them on black paper to create the final Zentangle Initials piece.
