Start Back

As a school, we have been delighted with how our students have reconnected to their old routines and quickly embraced new routines such as our split recess and lunch times. The most suitable phrase to describe how our students have returned to classroom learning routines is: “we couldn’t have asked for a better start back!” In uncertain times, it has been obvious that the certainty that school routines provide are a huge factor in student wellbeing. Across our school, we have been delighted to see such a positive, calm and productive atmosphere re-established so quickly. I would like to commend all of our staff on the preparation work they have undertaken to ensure such a great start back.

Student Wellbeing

During Term 4, student wellbeing is a primary focus for our school as we help our students to reconnect and reset for Term 4 and 2021. Across our school, we are using the following wellbeing strategies to promote student wellbeing during Term 4:

We have introduced the Berry Street Education Model strategy of morning meetings to help each student get oriented, connected and ready for the day ahead.

We have incorporated short “brain breaks” into our lesson structure to help students redevelop their learning stamina.

We have developed wellbeing curriculum materials to help students with areas such as resilience, goal-setting, stress management and other wellbeing techniques.

We have implemented small-group lunchtime activities (ranging from art activities to martial arts classes) to promote student wellbeing and connection to school.

I would like to acknowledge the work of our Wellbeing Team (Mrs Smith, Ms Pappin, Mr Wilson and Kimberly Batsas-Hill) who have done such an outstanding job in developing these great programs and activities to promote student wellbeing at KPS.

Curriculum Day: Monday, November 2nd

Our final Curriculum Day for 2020 will be held on Monday, November 2nd (preceding the Melbourne Cup holiday. The focus of the day will be on student assessment and reporting. Please note that this is a pupil free day.

School Events During Term 4

As part of our student wellbeing program, we have developed an expanded schedule of school based events for Term 4. Over the course of the term we will be running a variety of exciting events such as Book Week Dress Up day and many other great activities. Next week, we will be holding our Book Week Dress Up Day on Wednesday, October 21st. Although we won’t be holding our traditional Book Week Parade, we will make sure to share photos and videos at our Virtual Assembly on Friday October 23rd. All of these activities form part of our “Dream Great” program for Term 4 – you will find a graphic providing an overview of our “Dream Great” program elsewhere in the newsletter.

Young Leaders Day

Tomorrow, we will be running a Young Leader’s Day for all of our school leaders. The day has been developed and co-ordinated by our Grade 6 Team leader, Mrs Andrea Evans, and she has put together an excellent series of events and activities to help our student leaders further develop their leadership skills and attributes. I would like to thank Mrs Evans for the enormous work she has undertaken in creating this opportunity for our student leaders in the most difficult of circumstances.

Class Placement 2021

We are currently working on our 2021 class composition. Creating classes for a school of our size is a lengthy process as we seek to achieve balanced classes across our school. If you feel that there is any academic, social or personal information which is important to know about your child before we create our classes, please forward that information to us via our school email account at [email protected].

All the best,

Neil O’Sullivan

Welcome back to school! We are all very excited to have all the students all back on site.

Thank you to all the students who shared their amazing work with me last term. I loved seeing it all and sharing it with our school community.

Well done to all the students who participated in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge!

Our students read 941 books! What an amazing achievement.

48 students participated in the challenge and 25 completed the challenge. Students that completed the challenge will receive a certificate. I will let everyone know the arrangements for the certificate presentation when we have finalised the arrangements. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Jacobs, Ms Sloane and Mrs Rowe for all their work running the challenge.

The Children's Book Council of Australia's annual book week returns in 2020 with the theme Curious Creatures, Wild Minds. The event will take place between the 17th and the 23 of October.

Every year the CBCA holds a book week across Australia to promote the importance of reading and the joy that children can find in it. Schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children come together to celebrate Australian Literature in a whole host of events and parades, with the Reading Week culminating with the CBCA Book of the Year Awards.

This year we will be having a Book Week dress up day and class/year level parades on Wednesday 21st of October. We will take photos and videos of the parades and share them with our school community at our assembly on Friday 23rd of October. Please start thinking about your costumes. You could dress up as your favourite character or a ‘curious creature’!

Page 11: Zentangle at Lunchtime

Students will also be undertaking Book Week activities in class.

We are very lucky to have received some of the new short listed books! Thank you Mrs Smith for organising these for us.

If you have any Library books at home, could you please return them? Please place them in the book return tub in the Library. Thank you!

Have a great week,

Emma White
