Zebra Class

Term 3

Week 3: Monday

Space

Explorers

Dear Zebra Class Space Explorers! Well done for another week of fantastic learning. We have loved seeing your photos and videos. We hoped that you enjoyed the story about Bob and that our videos helped you to learn. Muddles and Ziggy would like to give you a giant marshmallow clap for really growing your brains! We can see that lots of you are also doing the activities set for you on Reading Eggs and Mathletics now too, which is fantastic. For the past two weeks we have been using our imaginations to learn about space. This week we are going to be learning about real space shuttles and astronauts! Dear Zebra parents and carers, Thank you to everyone helping at home, we are incredibly grateful. If you are able to photograph or video any learning done at home, we would love to see it. Please don’t feel that this has to be every activity, or every day. We appreciate the challenges that you are facing at the moment. Please send these [email protected]. We have decided to provide the learning in separate guides for each day from now on. These will be published on the Zebra Class pages of the website as usual. We aim to start our live phonics and story sessions on Microsoft Teams from tomorrow. We will be sending you details of our class code to access these.

Home Learning Today

There are no sessions on Microsoft Teams today. Phonics: Activities within this pack Writing: Space Shuttle Maths: Finding 1 more Handwriting: The sound ng PE: Astronaut dance Art: How to draw an astronaut Reading: Scheme book from Oxford Owl

Writing (Session 1) First Today we are going to learn about how astronauts get into space. Please start by watching this video of the launch of the Discovery space shuttle : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnoNITE-CLc (4 minutes) Then watch Mrs Rich’s video for Session 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlbUk3DpdNk&list=PLmklshUg3Ov2LR91Vg2YAHHmXCmzGOOHG&index=109

She will talk about the different parts of a space shuttle and show you how to write about it. The diagram of the different parts is also in this pack. Next We would like you to write at least one sentence to describe the Space Shuttle Discovery, using the video and photo to help you. This could be about the names of different parts of the shuttle, size and colour words, sentences to describe what happens etc. There is a sound mat in this pack to help you. Remember to say the word that you want to write out loud and listen really carefully to the sounds. Then look for the letters that match these sounds on the sound mat. If you have a printer, you can print the paper to write on, but any paper will be fine. This should take about 20-30 minutes.

Cargo Things they need to take with them.

Crew (astronauts are in here)

External tank for fuel This part falls back to Earth.

Solid rocket boosters There are two of these. They come

off and float back down to Earth with a parachute.

Orbiter A space plane that can be used again.

It has a big orange fuel tank. It has 2 rocket boosters. The astronauts are in the top. It goes high in the sky. The rocket boosters come off and float back down.

Phonics (about 20 minutes)

• For our lesson today there are some phonics activities on the next three pages.

• If all goes to plan, our aim is that the next phonics lesson will be live on

Microsoft Teams at 9.30am tomorrow. Your child will need something to write with for these sessions.

• Live phonics lessons will be every day apart from Wednesdays, when we will put phonics activities within our home learning guides on the school website.

Read these words. Can you find the pictures that match?

Read the sentence. Draw a picture to match what the sentence says.

Ask your child to read these sentences. Next, read these questions to your child, for him or her to answer..

Handwriting (about 15 minutes)

Please click on the link to watch Mrs Midgley’s video, then spend time afterwards doing more writing on your own. Session 1: How to write ng: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIZrCSOXcwc&list=PLmklshUg3Ov2LR91Vg2YAHHmXCmzGOOHG&index=78 You may also like to use other methods, such as the Wow fun option in Letterjoin (instructions included in this guide). You could also try other ways to write, such as: writing in rainbow letters with pens; writing in chalk on a patio and then writing over it again with a wet brush to wash it off; writing with an upside down wooden spoon in glitter or flour on a baking tray; writing with paint on the end of a cotton bud or feather; writing with icing pens on biscuits; writing in sand with your finger; writing on a steamed up shower door or mirror.

How to access Letterjoin at home

You can also learn all of these sounds and letters from this week by using the WOW FUN- Magic Words part of www.letterjoin.co.uk. Type the word or sound and pick a background. The access instructions are on the next page. For example:
