FIRST THREE QUARTERS SHOW HOMES SALES WERE UP BY 6.9 PER CENT ANNUALLY TORONTO - Toronto Real Estate Board President Paul Etherington announced that there were 8,051 transactions reported through the TorontoMLS system in September 2014. This result repre- sented a 10.9 per cent increase compared to September 2013. On a year-to-date basis through the first three quarters of the year, sales were up by 6.9 per cent annually to 73,465. "Despite a persistent shortage of listings in some market seg- ments, we have experienced strong growth in sales though the first nine months of 2014. This is evidence that GTA households remain upbeat about purchasing a home. The majority of home buyers purchase a home using a mortgage. The share of the average household's income dedicated to their mortgage pay- ment remains affordable, which is why buyer interest has re- mained solid," said Mr. Etherington. The average selling price for September 2014 transactions was $573,676 - up by 7.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2013. Average year-over-year price growth was strongest in the City of Toronto, both for low-rise home types like detached and semi-detached houses and for condominium apartments. The average selling price year-to-date was $563,813 - up 8.5 per cent compared to the first nine months of 2013. "If the current pace of sales growth remains in place, we could be flirting with a new record for residential sales reported by TREB Members this year. On the pricing front, the multitude of willing buyers in the marketplace coupled with the short supply of listings will continue to translate into very strong annual rates of price growth in the fourth quarter," said Jason Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis. Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivered the following remarks on Canada's contribution, in coordination with our allies, to the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL): "Mr. Speaker, in recent months, the international community has reacted, with virtually unanimous outrage and alarm at the rise of ISIL, the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.' "ISIL has established a self-proclaimed Caliphate, at present stretching over a vast territory roughly from Aleppo to near Baghdad, from which it intends to launch a terrorist jihad not merely against the region but on a global basis. "Indeed it has specifically targeted Canada and Canadians, urging supporters to attack, quote, 'disbelieving Canadians in any manner', vowing that we should not feel secure even in our homes. "It would be convenient to dismiss such statements as the mere rambling of lunatics were it not for the fact that ISIL's deeds have been fully in line with its words. "More shockingly, ISIL's words are matched by its actions. "In the territory ISIL has occupied it has conducted a campaign of unspeak- able atrocities against the most innocent of people. "It has tortured and beheaded children, it has raped and sold women into slavery, it has slaughtered minorities, captured prisoners and innocent civil- ians whose only crime is being or thinking differently from ISIL. "Indeed by late last summer, ISIL stood on the brink of committing large- scale genocide in Northern Iraq. "It was at that moment that Canada's allies in the international community, led by President Obama, decided to intervene. "Canadians have joined in this response. "On September 5th, I announced that members of the Canadian Army, in a non-combat role, would advise and assist security forces in Iraq battling the terrorists. "We had already begun, through the Royal Canadian Air Force, moving weap- ons and supplies donated by our allies to security forces in Northern Iraq. "And we indicated that Canada was prepared to do more. "Today we are bringing forward a motion asking this House to confirm its confidence for a government decision to join our allies and partners - the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, the Nether- lands, Belgium, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and likely others - in launching air strikes against ISIL. MARC GARNEAU ON THE MISSION IN IRAQISIL represents a real and present threat to the Middle East region. It has ruthlessly and systematically killed thousands throughoutIraq and Syria - innocent civilians, ethnic and religious minorities, humanitarian workers, and journalists - displacing hundreds ofthousands more in its wake. Both the security threat and theurgent humanitarian crisis created by ISIL require internationalaction. The question is not whether Canada can contribute to this effor t;we can, and we must. The question is this: in the context of awide-scale, international effor t to confront ISIL, what is the

most effective contribution that Canada can make? The Liberal Par ty of Canada believes that our effor ts are bestdevoted to the humanitarian side of the equation. DisplacedIraqis who have been forced from their homes at the hands ofISIL need our help. Canada is uniquely positioned to be a leaderin the humanitarian effor ts in this region. In addition, we canand should facilitate the resettlement of Iraqi refugees here inCanada. We also have unique capabilities that should lead us tofocus our time, personnel, and financial resources on non-combatroles such as strategic airlift, training, and medical suppor t.

We have repeatedly said that there is a clear line between a non-combat and combat role in Iraq. If the Prime Minister wants to takeCanada across that line, he must make the case to Canadians as towhy this is a necessary step for our country. The Prime Minister has not made this case. For this reason, theLiberal Par ty cannot suppor t the government's motion to go to warin Iraq.Marc Garneau, MPLiberal Par ty of Canada Critic for Foreign Affairs and theFrancophonie

Modi should speak out more on sports in IndiaBY VETURI SRIVATSA

One wonders how Narendra Modi could draw a parallel between In-dia winning a cricket match and the Mars achievement of space sci-entists when he himself and his alter ego Amit Shah controlled Gujaratcricket till the two shifted to Delhi. All the same, few would disagree with his asser tion after India suc-cessfully put the Mangalyaan satellite into orbit around Mars that thewhole country rejoices when our cricket team wins a tournamentwhereas what our scientists achieved is a thousand times biggerthan that.It is intriguing why Modi chose to get into cricket politics in the firstplace unless he was persuaded by his close adviser Arun Jaitley aspar t of the saffron vote bank in the country's cricket board.Modi first ousted the long-time president of the Gujarat Cricket Asso-ciation (GCA), a Congressman, who was smar t enough to see thefutility of fighting the strongman of Gujarat and instead joined him.Modi's "love" for cricket apar t, Modi had the first taste of Indian spor tswhen the list of competitors for the Incheon Asian Games went to himfor clearance after the Spor ts Authority of India (SAI) refused to ap-prove some disciplines in which, in its opinion, Indian par ticipantshad no earthly chance of winning medals.Modi perhaps cleared some of the teams as future investment as thepolitical chiefs of the concerned national federations could come in

handy to him some day. In most cases, SAI has been proved rightgoing by the per formances of some of those cleared by the PrimeMinister's Office (PMO).Compared with the performance in the first week at the GuangzhouGames four years ago it is not all that despairing for India in Incheon. They won 17 medals - one gold, two silver and 14 bronze. In the first week at Guangzhou, India won 19 medals - two gold, sevensilver and 10 bronze while in the second week they went berserk bytheir known standards winning 45 medals - 12 gold, nine silver and24 bronze. So there is still hope, though they will cer tainly not be returning witha bag of 75 medals as predicted by SAI or get closer to their best-everreturns of 64 from the continental games four years ago.Athletics contributed 12 medals, including five gold, and it will be toomuch to expect the same number from them this time. Boxers canfetch a clutch of medals as they brought in nine last time. Then thearchers are capable of producing gold out of the blue like they did onthe eighth day.The arguments and excuses for the shor tfall can be predictable. Withthe removal of cue spor ts and chess, we have been hard done andthen sure-shot medal winners, wrestler Sushil Kumar, boxer Vijender

Singh and tennis stars Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and SomdevDevvarman are not there in Incheon for some reason or the other. Then our badminton players, who promised so much, failed to grabany medal.Excuse number two is that most spor tspersons were kept on tenter-hooks because of the late clearance of the contingent and some ofthem, including India's lone Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, did not have enough time to acclimatize and work out at the facilities.Yet, Bindra is happy with his bronze medal, and he is clear that thegold and silver medal winners shot better than him.The pronouncement from former shooter Moraad Ali Khan takes thecake. Now a filmmaker, he blames it on poor planning! He was quotedas saying that people must change their mindset, whatever that maymean. He goes on to say that we should already be preparing for thenext Games rather than trying to fix up camps, training sessions onemonth before the Games!Going back to Modi, he says he draws confidence from the countlessextraordinary stories of ordinary Indians he has seen through de-cades of travel across India. Surely, he must have run into somespor tspersons, too, and they are now looking up to him for inspira-tion.The prime minister is right, there is a high tide of hope in India, but heshould not allow it to ebb. He should soon speak out as to what is instore for India's spor tspersons.

Our Conservative Government has aggressively pursued an ambi-tious free-trade agenda to grow our economy and improve the qualityof life for Canadians. However, progress on domestic trade has notalways kept pace. Barriers to interprovincial and inter territorial tradeare impacting our ability to take advantage of the benefits of oureconomy. Today, we have agreements in place with 43 countries giv-ing Canadian businesses preferential access to over 1.1 billion con-

sumers worldwide. Canada is entering into new trade agreementsaround the world that seek to eliminate irritants and barriers to inter-national trade. Trade has become a major growth catalyst and inter-national success today is driven with the inclusion of integrated sup-ply chains. Therefore, it is essential that inconsistencies with inter-provincial and inter territorial trade are corrected. Present barriers tointernal trade including regulatory differences and restrictions onthe movement of goods and services, put Canadian firms at adisadvantage. Conflicting and inconsistent rules and regulationsacross jurisdictions raise costs for businesses, hinder mobilityfor workers, and limit the choices for consumers. That is why wehave redesigned Canada’s Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT). Weare taking action with this new Agreement by braking down thesebarriers and building a modern economy. With a new AIT we willmeet the challenges of an increasingly competitive global envi-ronment by streamlining economic regulation and reducing busi-ness cost. Canada needs a harmonized approach for labour, goodsand services as well as investments to keep pace with theseglobal economic realities. The result of redesigning the structure of internal trade here in Canadawould be clear and comprehensive. A new framework would form astrong basis from which to move forward, representing an approachwe can pursue to achieve meaningful outcomes. Our Government iscommitted to working with the provinces and territories to create anagreement and begin the essential work of renewing internal trade tothe benefit of all Canadians.

The mili-tants said music was a crime; that women weren't allowed to go tothe market; that girls couldn't go to school.Raised in a once-peaceful area of Pakistan transformed by terrorism,Malala was taught to stand up for what she believed in. So, she foughtfor her right to be educated. And on Oct 9, 2012, she nearly lost her lifefor the cause. She was shot point-blank on her way home from school. No one expected her to survive - but she did.Now she is an international symbol of peaceful protest and the young-est Nobel Peace Prize nominee. This is the remarkable story of a girl who knew from a young age thatshe wanted to change the world - and did. CANADA MOVES FORWARDTO FIGHT AGAINST ISIL

CONTD. FROM PAGE 1"In addition to these air strikes, the Government of Canada will, inresponse to requests from Iraqi authorities as well as other allies andpar tners, continue to assist in other, non-combat, counter-terrorismroles. "We will also contribute one air-to-air refuelling aircraft, twoAurora surveillance aircraft, and the necessary air crews and sup-por t personnel."In addition we are extending the deployment in a non-combat role ofthe up to 69 members of the Canadian Army advising and assistingsecurity forces in Iraq."There will however be no ground combat mission, which is explicitlyruled out in the resolution."These contributions are for a period of up to six months."Let me be clear on the objectives of this intervention."We intend to significantly degrade the capabilities of ISIL."Specifically, its ability to either engage in military movements ofscale, or to operate bases in the open."This will halt ISIL's spread in the region and greatly reduce its capac-ity to launch terrorist attacks outside the region."To be clear, this will not eliminate ISIL nor automatically ensure thatalternative governance is able to occupy its space in Iraq or Syria."It will, however, open the oppor tunity for others to do so."But again to be clear, while ISIL will not be eliminated, the riskspresented from the territory in which it operates will be significantlyreduced to those of other similar ungoverned spaces in the broaderregion."There are, Mr. Speaker, two other matters on which I wish to elabo-rate."First, the resolution confirms the Government of Canada's intentionto strike ISIL and its allies."We will strike ISIL where and only where Canada has the clear sup-por t of the government of that country."At present this is only true in Iraq."If it were to become the case in Syria, then we will par ticipate in airstrikes against ISIL in that country also."The revulsion of the Government of Canada to the actions of theAssad regime is well known.

"But we are par ticipating only in a counter-terrorism operation againstthe terrorists around ISIL."We have no intention of participating in a war against the govern-ment of any country in the region."Second, let me assure Canadians that the government is seized withthe necessity of avoiding a prolonged quagmire in this par t of theworld."The actions we have announced are ones that could be ended withrelative ease."Indeed, we and our allies are acting now precisely to avoid a situa-tion that was clearly headed to a wider, protracted and much moredangerous conflict."Let me also say that the military measures we are taking do not inany way preclude humanitarianactions."There is no either/or here."In response to horrifying humansuffering, we have already beenproviding emergency shelter andurgent health care for thousandsof civilians in Iraq through sup-por t to humanitarian organiza-tions on the ground, and substan-tial assistance to the Governmentof Iraq."This is in addition to large scalefinancial assistance already be-ing furnished to the significantnumber of countries in the regionthat have been impacted by thehumanitar ian catastrophe inSyria. "Let me also assure Canadiansthat the Government will continueto be seized with the broader ter-rorist threats against Canada."We have strengthened laws inthis country to deal with the is-sue of so-called Canadian foreignfighters."We have broadened the groundsfor passpor t revocation againstsuch people as well as allowingfor the stripping of citizenshipfrom dual nationals who engagein terrorist activities."We will soon bring forward addi-tional measures to strengthen theability of our security services tomonitor aspir ing terrorists towhere possible prevent their re-turn to Canada or to where that isnot possible give greater tools tobe able to charge and prosecute."Mr. Speaker, to return to the mat-ter before us today, I urge allmembers to consider and to sup-por t the motion we have pre-sented."I do this, Mr. Speaker, in recog-nizing that in a democracy, espe-cially one approaching an elec-tion, there is rarely political up-side in suppor ting any kind ofmilitary action and little risk in

opposing it."Never theless, for regional and global security and, of course, thesecurity of Canadians, this action is necessary."The evidence of the necessity of this, Mr. Speaker, there is nonebetter than the fact that the mission has been launched by PresidentObama, the leader who had withdrawn American troops and proudlyended the war in Iraq."Of course, Mr. Speaker, one could say that while the mission isevidently necessary, we don't have to be the ones doing it becauseothers will."But, Mr. Speaker, throughout our history that has never been theCanadian way."It has never been the Canadian way to do only the most easy andpraisewor thy of actions and to leave the tough things for others."Indeed, Mr. Speaker, colleagues, we should be under no illusion."If Canada wants to keep its voice in the world, and we should sinceso many of our challenges are global, being a free rider means youare not taken seriously."The threat posed by ISIL is real."And it is grave."And it is explicitly directed, in par t, against this country."Left unchecked, this terrorist threat can only grow and grow quickly."As a government we know our ultimate responsibility is to protectCanadians and to defend our citizens from those who would do harmto us or our families."We also know that our country, like our allies, shares the duty andburden of all free peoples, to act against wider global threats when itis in our capacity to do so."And when our allies recognize and respond to a threat that wouldalso harm us, we Canadians do not stand on the sidelines."We do our par t."On Monday, this House will debate the motion put forward for an aircombat campaign against ISIL."I call on all members of this House to show their suppor t for thismission and of course our suppor t for the brave men and women ofthe Canadian Armed Forces who are now and always ready and will-ing to answer the call of their country."NDP has questioned Canada's role in Iraq and have indicated theywill not suppor t a combat role for Canadian forces.NDP leader TomMulcair says that PM Harper has not made the case for war.NDP alsowants the time for engagement of Canadian forces reduced from 6monts to 3 months. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said that ISIL is a threat both to theregion and to global security. Unlike the Prime Minister, Liberals be-lieve Canada can make a more helpful contribution to the interna-tional effor t to combat ISIL than aging war planes.I think Canadians have a lot more to offer than that. We can be re-sourceful, and there are significant, substantial, non-combat rolesthat Canada can play. The Liberal Par ty of Canada cannot and will notsupport this Prime Minister's motion to go to war in Iraq.

DESK REPORTToronto - To suppor t a Waste-Free Toronto at a local level, theCouncil of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA) and the TorontoEnvironmental Alliance (TEA) organised Waste-Free Daawat tocreate an open dialogue between CASSA, TEA and South Asian andImmigrant community members concerning waste management prac-tices with particular emphasis on food waste. The CapaCITY Creatorscreated a brochure format of the guide that outlined how to plan a wastefree dinner event, since hosting dinners was a common practice withinthe South Asian community, a source of which must waste is alsoproduced. During the event, Emily Alfred, from TEA, explained how cor-rectly to categorize waste to minimize the amount of waste enteringlandfills. Also, as a CapaCITY Creator, Nirogini Nalliah, explained thewaste free guide and provided useful resources and guidelines on howfood waste can be minimized during a dinner event. With over fifty (70)participants, the Daawat was a huge success in engaging an honestdialogue among members of the South Asian community, included youth, seniors, families, community-based organizations and community lead-ers. In moving forward, the goal is to translate the waste free guide intovarious languages and submit to South Asian newspapers. Together, both individually and collectively, we can reduce the amount of wastethat enters landfills, and continuing to engage and educate one anotheron proper waste management practices. The team decided to create auser-friendly guide that was culturally relevant for diverse communi-ties. Helping to make family gatherings and community meals moreenvironmentally friendly was identified as a great start. The guide in-cludes tips on using reusable dishes, collecting organic food waste, andchoosing less packaging. The group decided to launch the guide byhosting a Waste-Free Picnic earlier in June, following by facilitatingeducational workshops across various community settings and at or-ganizations and institutions including mosques and temples.

During the same quar ter lastfiscal, the index had touched the all-time low value of 45.7, the CIIsaid in a release here. The number 50 is the dividing line on the survey's index betweenpositive and weak business confidence."Thir ty percent respondents expected GDP to grow in a range of 5.5-

6.0 percent in FY15, which indicates that 6 percent growth is withinreach this year," it added. In the FICCI survey, 34 percent of the participants anticipated betterinvestment prospects over the next two quarters, compared with 21percent stating likewise a year ago. With the revival in domestic and global demand, a majority (46 per-cent) of the surveyed businesses were contemplating new invest-ment in the July-September quar ter, while only 10 percent expectedcontraction, CII said."This indicates that economic recovery is sustainable, provided wemaintain the demand momentum, where the monetary stance by theReserve Bank (RBI) will play a crucial role," it added."The propor tion of respondents citing 'moderately to substantiallybetter' performance vis-a-vis last six months recorded a significantjump at the economy, industry and firm level in the current survey,"FICCI said. However, not much change was noted in employmentoutlook of the par ticipating companies in the FICCI survey, with a

majority 64 percent not expecting to hire more over the next six months.CII cited the slow pick up in global demand, high inflation and risingborrowing costs as the top three concerns of the respondents."While we can do little about addressing the global slowdown con-cern, all policy options must be explored to tackle the problem ofinflation and high borrowing cost," it added.

THREE SCIENTISTS SHARE2014 NOBEL PRIZE INPHYSIOLOGYStockholm, (IANS) Three scientists - John O'Keefe, and May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser - have shared the 2014 NobelPrize in physiology or medicine, the Nobel Committee announcedMonday. The Nobel assembly at the Karolinska Institute has decidedto award one half of the physiology or medicine prize to John O'Keefeand the other half jointly to May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser for theirdiscovery of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain,Xinhua reported. According to a statement of the committee, this year'slaureates have discovered an "inner GPS" in the brain that "makes itpossible to orient ourselves in space, demonstrating a cellular basisfor higher cognitive function". John O'Keefe discovered in 1971 thatcertain nerve cells in the rat's brain were activated when it assumeda particular place in the environment, while other nerve cells wereactivated at other places. He proposed that these "place cells" build upan inner map of the environment. Place cells are located in a part of thebrain called the hippocampus. In 2005, May-Britt and Edvard Moserdiscovered that other nerve cells in a nearby par t of the brain, the entorhinal cor tex, were activated when a rat passed certainlocations. Together, these locations formed a hexagonal grid, with each "grid cell" reacting in a unique spatial pattern. Collec-tively, these grid cells form a coordinate system that allows forspatial navigation.

NEW DRUG MAY CUREDIABETES AT SOURCENew York, (IANS) A modified form of the drug niclosamide -now used to eliminate intestinal parasites - may hold the key tobattling Type 2 diabetes at its source, says a study. The drug used in the study is a modified form of a medicationthat the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US has al-ready approved for human use.In Type 2 diabetes, the body either does not produce enoughinsulin or the body's ability to use that insulin is degraded.A major cause of insulin resistance is the accumulation of ex-cess fat in the cells of the liver, as well as in muscle tissue."Our goal in this study was to find a safe and practical way ofdiminishing fat content in the liver. We used mice to performproof-of-principle experiments in our laboratory," said lead re-searcher Victor Shengkan Jin, an associate professor of phar-macology at the Rutgers University in the US."We succeeded in removing fat, and that in turn improved theanimals' ability to use insulin correctly and reduce blood sugar,"Jin added. The modified medication - whose full name is niclosamide etha-nolamine salt (NEN) - burned the excess fat in liver cells througha process known as mitochondrial uncoupling."We went to the literature and found an approved drug that doesin parasitic worms what we wanted to do in liver cells," Jinnoted. At present, the only way now known to cure Type 2 dia-betes involves major gastric bypass surgery.

BRAZILIAN PRESIDENTIALELECTION TO WITNESS RUN-OFFBrasilia, (IANS) With incumbent President Dilma Rousseff falling shor tof an outright victory in Sunday's election, Brazil's presidential raceis all set for a second round, BBC repor ted Monday.Rousseff, who has served a four-year term as president, received 42per cent of the vote and will face centre-right rival Aecio Neves, whowon 34 per cent.Prominent environmentalist Marina Silva received 21 per cent de-spite being a favourite at one stage, and is now out of the race.Silva, who until two weeks ago, was considered an opinion pollfavourite to face Rousseff in the run-off and, perhaps even defeat thepresident, finally fizzled out in the final leg of the campaign. On results, Rousseff said people had expressed their rejection of "theghosts of the past, recession and unemployment". She vowed to con-tinue to work for change. "I clearly understood the message from thestreets and from the ballot boxes. The majority of Brazilians want usto speed up the Brazil we are building," said Rousseff, who is from theLeft-wing Workers' Par ty (PT). Under Brazilian law, the two top candi-dates go on to a second round if no one takes more than 50 per cent of

the vote, EFE repor ted. Neves's recent strong comeback, noticed bythe polls published Saturday, once again put his Brazilian Social De-mocracy Par ty face to face with Rousseff's Workers Par ty, as in thelast five elections. In his first statement after the result, Neves movedto draw the suppor t of voters of Silva's Brazilian Socialist Par ty (PSB).She became the par ty's candidate after the death of its previous choice,Eduardo Campos, in a plane crash Aug 13.To celebrate his second place, Neves paid tribute to the memory ofhis "friend", stating that "it is time to join forces" and "all those whocan make a contribution" to his project would be welcome.Commenting on her electoral setback, environmentalist Silva did notprovide any hints regarding her position in the second round, but saidshe would be ready to have a "dialogue" about the governmentprogramme that she was offering to the voters.Rousseff, meanwhile, also said "now the struggle continues" anddeclared she was convinced that it would be "a victorious strugglebecause it is the struggle of the Brazilian people and the people unitedwill never be defeated".

A TOOL TO TRACK ORIGIN OF BLOOD CELLS, CANCERSNew York, (IANS) In a bid to track the origin of diseases suchas cancer, researchers have developed a system that generatesa unique barcode in the DNA of all blood stem cells and theirprogenitor cells, allowing scientists to see how blood forms. The new tool showed that the billions of blood cells that thebody produces each day are made not by blood stem cells, butrather their less pluripotent descendants, called progenitorcells. This biological inventory system makes it possible to deter-mine the number of stem cells/progenitors being used to makeblood and how long they live, as well as answer fundamentalquestions about where individual blood cells come from."I wanted to figure out a way to label blood cells inside thebody, and the best idea I had was to use mobile geneticelements called transposons," said lead researcher Fernando

Camargo, an associate professor at the Harvard University.A transposon is a piece of genetic code that can jump to arandom point in DNA when exposed to an enzyme calledtransposase. The location in the DNA where a transposon moves acts as anindividual cell's barcode, so that if the mouse's blood is taken afew months later, any cells with the same transposon locationcan be linked back to its parent cell, the study conducted in miceshowed. With the new tool "you can imagine being able to look at tumourprogression or identify the precise origins of cancer cells thathave broken off from a tumour and are now circulating in theblood", maintained co-researcher Jianlong Sun from the HarvardUniversity. The study appeared in the journal Nature.

Italso stars Jagapathi Babuin an important role whileSunny will be seen in acameo.Directed by G.Nageshwar Reddy, thefilm is slated for Oct 17release.

Given that pk's first poster had a nude Aamir Khan in it, it's hardlysurprising to see that it had created a lot of buzz.Interestingly though, the poster didn't feature any other star from thecast, including Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput. Turns outthat the makers want to release their posters in phases, thus main-taining a shroud of mystery around the film. The latest buzz in the industry is about Anushka Sharma's look in thefilm. As shown in the picture, she will be spor ting a shor t hairdo in thefilm. In fact, the word is that Anushka was required to cut her hair forthe film, but she couldn't do so due to her other film commitments. Asa result, she had to spor t a wig in the movie.Says a source, "Director Rajkumar Hirani was keen to have Anushkadon this look. He tried quite a few looks before finalising this one.Rajkumar thinks that this hairdo adds a new dimension to her person-ality and character. That said, Anushka couldn't cut her hair for thefilm, since she also has to shoot for Ranbir Kapoor-starrer, 'BombayVelvet', and her home production, 'NH10'.The latter films need her to spor t long hair, so the actress decided towear a wig for her par t in the film. The unit members were initiallysceptical about the wig but she looks great and everyone approved ofher look." The film's spokesperson confirmed the story.

SONAKSHI TO PLAY AMRITA PRITAM?Filmmaker Ashi Dua of 'BombayTalkies' fame has apparently ap-proached Sonakshi Sinha to playthe role of Amrita Pritam in herfilm that revolves around Sahir

Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam'slove story. Says a source closeto the actor, "Sonakshi has beenapproached to star in the filmand in most likelihood, she will

take up the offer." It may benoted here that earlier on, it wasrepor ted that the film's makerswere keen to sign on PriyankaChopra for Amrita Pritam's role andthat Irrfan had been approached forSahir's role. Irrfan reportedly optedout of the project because of hisother commitments. But now itturns out that PeeCee is not do-ing the film either. So the hunt

is still on for an actor to playSahir 's character and that ofImroze, who was Amrita's par t-ner right til l the end. The filmwill be based on Amrita Pritamand Sah i r Ludh ianv i ' s l ovestory that has been dissectedin her autobiography, Rasid iTicket. Sonakshi Sinha and pro-ducer Ashi Dua were unavailablefor comment.

RANVEER SINGH TO MOVE OUT OFHIS HOUSE FOR BAJIRAO MASTAANI

MISSING 'HAIDER' IS SINFUL

Some of you may find this confession strange and weird because ofmy belonging to the ilk of professionals whose job comprise of doingfault finding in the movie. But there is no denying the fact that moviemaking is cer tainly a herculean task. Even tougher than that is por-traying something on the celluloid which is already iconic in its ownright, and job turns even more tedious when you you have aShakespearean saga in your hand to paint on the silver screen. But there is one cine maker who has by now graduated in the ar t offiddling with Shakespearean masterpieces, and it's none other thanversatile cinematician Vishal Bhardwaj, who after mesmerizing theviewers with 'Maqbool' (inspired from Macbeth) and 'Omkara' (whichagain was an Indian cine tale inspired from Othello) has completedhis Shakespearean trilogy with the Indianised edition of 'Hamlet' inform of 'Haider'.Well there is no denying the fact that be it any epoch it's it's always apleasure to revisit the Shakespeare's world (irrespective of the me-dium of rendezvous), and the charisma iconic writer's creations getseven more charming when it comes with a stamping of VishalBhardwaj all over its packaging. So just like his previous cine gifts this time Vishal has once againsucceeded in bringing out the Shakespeare inherited within him. Andthat too while keeping the entire his Shakespearean-isque cine enter-prise uncluttered.Set in Kashmir circa 1995 the 'Haider' narrates the story of Haider(Shahid Kapoor) who returns to Kashmir from Aligarh, on knowingabout the disappearance of his father, Hilaal Meer's. While pining forhis father, Haider chances upon the romance brewing between hismother Ghazala (Tabu) and his uncle, Khurram (Kay Kay Menon). When 'Haider' sets out in search of his father, his childhood sweet-hear t, Ashi (Shraddha Kapoor) helps him. Through her, he meetsRoohdar (Irr fan Khan) a Pakistani militant, who makes him believethat his father has been manipulatively murdered. With frames rollingahead Khurram ends up marries Ghazala, but this act of his mother

and uncle didn't go down well with 'Haider' believes that his father isalive somewhere. So what follows next to know watch this astound-ing cine cantata of Vishal Bhardwaj. As far as premise of 'Haider' is concerned then right at onset I wouldlike make a mention of the fact that there wouldn't have been anyother better milieu than terrorism ridden J&K of 90s for the executionof 'Haider'.By reinterpreting and adroitely skewing classic drama 'Hamlet' tomake it something palatable for Indian audience Vishal has onceagain proved that he really understands the Shakespeare like no oneelse does in Bollywood. Be it a somewhat estranged mother-son re-lationship, or a son's agony and bereavement after his father goesmissing or an incestuous relationship of a wife with her paramourwho is incidentally her husbands brother. In premise of 'Haider' ev-erything is crafted with such a conviction that you at once get in-dulged in the onscreen proceedings.Besides what deserves a special mention is Vishal's winnowing adept-ness by deploying which he has adroitly managed to keep some ofthe crucial components of Shakespeare's masterpiece like "OedipalComplex" latent and that too without making viewers feel the absenceof the same.In fact it won't be wrong to say that 'Haider' is one such cinematiccreation belonging to the ilk of "rarest of the rare" kind of cine phe-nomena where even obmutescence speaks a thousand words. Thoughthere are two relevant styluses which play a relevant in role in thecrafting of this masterpiece and they are "'Hamlet'" and :"Terrorismaggrieved Kashmir". But truly 'Haider' is about none of them in totalityand it neither tries to send across any message, but yes at the sametime it's an cinematic jaunt full of emotional commotion which takesyou to an altogether different world. And after seeing this doyen rein-terpretation of 'Hamlet' by Vishal Bhardwaj and Basharat Peer I don'thave any trepidation in saying that 'Haider' is even more eloquentthan 'Hamlet' and probably Bhardwaj is the only person in Bollywoodwho knows Shakespearean-ism inside out.

My daughters far more intelligent than me: Mahesh BhattVeteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatthas been one of the best of histime and inspired generationswith his movie-making skills, butthe director, who now producesfilms with new talent, says histhree daughters - Pooja, Shaheenand Alia - are far more intelligentand practical than him."I have got three daughters andall three of them make me veryproud. I have no problem in tell-ing them that they are far moreintelligent than I am and I alsotake instructions from them,"Bhatt said. The filmmaker, known for craft-ing meaningful cinemas such asAr th, Saraansh, Naam, Kaash andDaddy, has daughter Pooja withhis first wife Kiran Bhatt (originalname Lorraine Bright). Later hemarried actress Soni Razdan andthey have two daughters -Shaheen and Alia - together.Sharing his joy of being a proudfather of three successful girl chil-dren, he says that all of them haveachieved something in their livesand that too without any help."Pooja is an example of how a girlchild can sparkle and be com-pletely self sufficient. Shaheen isa brilliant writer and unique child.Alia is a star and she has addedto my ageing stardom. I havebeen a star and man of public fig-ure of a kind, but India is a youngcountry and most of the Indians, who consume enter ta inmentproducts, are under 25. Alia isundoubtedly one of the tallest iconin that space," added Bhatt whoalso has son Rahul. If he is a proud father, he is a dot-ing dad too. "We belong to thatstrata of the society where attackfrom unknown people won't hap-pen. But yes, my eldest daughterPooja had a relationship with a

person who under the influenceof alcohol did abuse her and thatbecame a very painful chapter ofour family. So, if a strong self-suf-ficient woman like her can besubjected to domestic violence, then it makes me shiver when Ivisualise about all those vulner-able girls who do not have theeconomic clout or do not have theshield of stardom," he said.Having contributed to Bollywoodfor around four decades, themoviemaker co-owns VisheshFilms with his brother Mukeshand they have together churned

out bold and successful films likeMurder, Jism and Raaz. Thesefilms raised eyebrows for theirsensual por trayal of women.Tel l h im that f i lms object i fywomen; Bhatt dismisses it say-ing that "objectification of womenis also there in our culture andpatriarchal mindset governs oursociety". "Women are bornslaves to traditions, which com-pels them to be submissive, weak, docile, put up with the in-justice and sufferings to achievegreat vir tue. To say that all themovies are responsible for the

objectification of women is anexaggeration. I feel that womenhave the right to dress up in apar ticular way and if you call itobjectification then what's wrong? Shehas the right to choose what she wearsand if that doesn't go according to yourculture and mindset, it doesn't meanthat you should fight under the garbageby calling it an objectification. To blamea woman saying that she dresses upprovocatively and invites rape andother injustice is an hear tbreak-ing argument, which has no placein our social discourse," said thefilmmaker.

sister-in-law on Karan Johar’s chat show last year, and also admittedthat they have hung out a couple of times (Katrina is rumoured to be in arelationship with Kareena’s cousin Ranbir Kapoor), things seem to havetaken a cordial turn. Now, Katrina has gone all out to say that Kareena hasalways supported her and been extremely kind to her."Kareena has always been supportive. A biopic on Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni is apparently set torelease next year and the cricketer's wife recently showed her sup-por t for the film - it will reportedly be directed by Neeraj Pandey - byuploading the first poster of the film on a social networking site.It may be pointed out that from the time the film was announced, it hasbeen making news due to various reasons. The latest buzz is that thecricketer will co-produce this film."Dhoni is apparently going to co-produce his biopic, but the fact is thathe needs to retire before a biopic on his life is made. No films can bemade until and unless the player has announced his retirement. Also, the player needs to take permission from the BCCI especially sinceDhoni is still a part of the Indian cricket team," says a source.Another source close to the BCCI says that the body has not receivedany kind of proposal or request from any one to make a film on MSDhoni. "They were unaware about any movie being made on him.Such a film can't be made because he's still playing for the country,"says the source. Dhoni's manager too denied the story.

Ranveer Singh turnschoreographer for Kill DilRanveer Singh, who will next be seen in Yash Raj Films' Kill Dil,has choreographed a recently released song from the film,'Sweeta' that features him and Parineeti Chopra. The makers got Ganesh Acharya on board to choreograph thesong but when they heard the track and got an understanding ofwhich par t of the story it is in, they decided to give a free handto Ranveer. The song shows Parineeti doing several activities throughoutthe day and Ranveer Singh, who is in love with her, is aroundher all the time.We have seen Ranveer Singh pull off some killer dance movesin his earlier films. However, this was the first time that he triedhis hand at choreographing a song.He was very excited about it as the song permits him to goabsolutely crazy and for someone who is always so full of en-ergy, it was too much fun.Ranveer Singh has gone absolutely crazy in the song, playingaround with different props and doing unusual things. The mak-ers were very sure that Ranveer could pull this off and so theygave him full rein. The song just has mad moves and not a specific dance thatpeople can follow.Ganesh Acharya says, "The best par t about shooting Sweetawas that we gave Ranveer Singh full freedom in the song. Hecould do whatever he wanted to. There is no choreography or asignature move as such. But he has thoroughly enjoyed thesong, done masti and at the same time brought the romanticfeel to it."Ranveer Singh shares, "Ganesh sir was too sweet to let me domy thing for Sweeta. They are not steps as such. I am justhaving fun in the song. There was no nervous energy; only ex-citement all throughout."

Hockey returns India to days of yoreJUST SPORT

BY VETURI SRIVATSA

It is back to the golden days when everything was forgotten if India'shockey team did well at major multi-discipline events. The majorityof the present generation were not born when 48 years ago India beatPakistan last. It was when Railwayman Balbir Singh Jr became acelebrity overnight with his extra time match-winner.Now it took 16 years for India to win the Games hockey gold again.Coincidentally, the man in charge of that 1998 team Maharaj KrishanKaushik is back in the suppor t staff led by Australian coach TerryWalsh. After hockey victory, there were tense moments on the kabaddi cour tsas India's men and women teams just about managed to cling on totheir gold medals. The two teams are yet to be beaten in the Games, but they will not take the gold for granted any longer what with morefitter and agile Iranians and Koreans posing a serious threat. Theleagues of various denominations will pull in more countries to Indiato play the spor t to make it global. After the first week, there were grave doubts whether India wouldcross the 50-medal mark, leave alone the 65 medals they won atGuangzhou four years ago or the 70 plus predicted by the Spor tsAuthority of India (SAI) exper ts. The chef-de-mission of the contin-gent now says the IOA would take what they got as the figure was onexpected lines. The history shows that Indians have an even distribution over the twoweeks and they have invariably done well in the second half. Afteronly 17 medals to show in the first week, India did well to get 40 in thesecond to finish eight in the medals standings, two rungs below theirGuangzhou's sixth-place finishing four years ago.Of the four above India, only Kazhakstan with 87 have more medalsoverall with a gold tally of 28. Iran tied with India with 57 medals butthey have 21 gold as against India's 11. Nor th Korea pipped India tothe seventh position by getting one more silver than India's 10 thoughthey also have 11 gold in a tally of 36 while Thailand in sixth positionhave ten medals less than India's tally but then they have 12 gold.Where India missed out sure medals are in cue spor ts and chess

which were dropped from the Incheon Games. At Guangzhou theyfetches four and two medals and then the other dropped spor t rollerskating brought in two medals four years ago. Then the individualtennis gold and the doubles gold Somdev Devvarman won as heexcused himself from the Games for reasons not far to seek. He wasoverlooked for Rajiv Khel Ratna more than once. Of course, Sainawho changed her mind to play at Incheon skipping a WTA tour event, somewhat compensated by winning the mixed doubles gold withSaketh Myneni.Archery improved with the team gold to make it four as against threelast time. Wrestling, too, showed some improvement getting a goldafter three decades, cour tesy Yogeshwar Dutt, and logging in a silverand two bronze as compared three bronze four years ago.Though much more was expected from shooters, they just about man-aged to get one more than the eight they got at Guangzhou, includingJitu Rai's gold.Squash gold and silver are easily the best showing in a sport in whichthe Indians are steadily improving, though Saurav Ghosal let the indi-vidual gold slip out of his pocket.Badminton has only a women's team bronze to show, they could haveadded a couple more bronze at least while rowing dropped one goldand three silver they got at Guangzhou and had to settle for threebronze. But M.C..Mary Kom's gold and the women's 4x400m relay team'swinning the title for the four th consecutive time made up for otherlosses. The Incheon Games could have done without the theatrics of boxerSarita Devi, but then she is not to be blamed entirely for it. If as manyas five National Olympic Committees have complaint about the refer-eeing, there has to be something drastically wrong with the manage-ment.To get back to the medal that mattered most to the Indians -- hockeygold. Somehow this time the hockey buffs seemed to have expectedthe team to win it. Their confidence, perhaps, stemmed from the factthat the Pakistanis have not had any international exposure for nearlya year and also the falling graph of the Koreans. The best offshoot of the victory is India need not worry about thequalification for the Rio Olympics and they now have two clear yearsto prepare for the Games.See the difference. While the Indians are mostly training at home the

European teams keep playing their neighbours, over weekends tostay highly competitive. Look at the way Belgium have come along.Belgium, who were struggling to get into the top 10 in the world rankingsfive years ago, are now in the big league, having moved up to four thplace behind Australia, the Netherlands and Germany.Walsh looks at big picture and he attaches more impor tance to Indiaperforming well at the World Cup and the Olympics than at the Asian

Games.Hockey India and the government of India should leave it to exper ts todecide the roadmap for training and competition at least for a three-year period, the least a coach should get to prove his mettle.Walsh talks of a pool of some 30 players to get the team competitivefor Rio and he knows how difficult it is for the team to play three back-to-back international tournaments.

India continuekabaddi dominancewith twin Asiad goldsIncheon, (IANS) India maintained their dominance in kabaddi atthe Asian Games with both the men's and women's teams re-taining their gold medals at the Songdo Global University Gym-nasium here Friday. The men's team, who have won every single gold since men'skabaddi was introduced in 1990 in Beijing, staged a late come-back to edge out Iran 27-25 in the final. The women's team won the yellow metal for the second con-secutive time beating Iran 31-21 in the title round.

Dubai, (IANS) Preparations for next year's ICC Cricket World Cup2015 will go up a notch this week when Pakistan host Australia inthe United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a three-match One-Day Interna-tional (ODI) series, and World Champions and No.1 ranked Indiawelcome the West Indies for a five-match ODI series, the Interna-tional Cricket Council (ICC) said Sunday. The first of the two simultaneous series gets underway atSharjah Cricket Stadium Tuesday, and a 3-0 series victory forAustralia will see it ascend to 114 points. This result will givethe four-time World Champions the No.1 rankings on the ICCODI Team Rankings provided the West Indies win, at least, twomatches in their five-ODI series against India, which star tsWednesday in Kochi. This scenario will see India stay on 113 ratings points, along-side South Africa, but it will be ranked behind the Proteas whenthe ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point to slip fromthe No.1 spot. However, if India win all five matches of the series, they will rise to116 ratings point and grab sole position on top of the table. A 4-1

win for India and 3-0 win for Australia will put both the sides on 114ratings points, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side will retain thenumber-one position by a fraction of a point.Australia, who trail third-ranked Sri Lanka by a fraction of a point, will move ahead of Angelo Mathews' side if they win the seriesagainst Pakistan. If India beat the West Indies 3-2 and Australia defeat Pakistan 2-1,then South Africa will move to the top of the table.Team rankings:1. Spinners, Warnerdismantle PakistanAustralia 97 for 4 (Warner 53*, Hasan 2-17) beat Pakistan96 for 9 (Maxwell 3-13, Boyce 2-10) by six wickets

Glenn Maxwell spun out the first three Pakistan wickets on aslow turner as the hosts limped to 96 and lost the only T20international to Australia by six wickets. Had it not been for 20extras, the second-highest contributor to the innings afterdebutant Saad Nasim's 25, Pakistan would have struggled toget anywhere close to 100. Pakistan's spinners, in the absenceof the banned Saeed Ajmal, hit back to have Australia 56 for 4,but David Warner sealed the chase in 14 overs with an unbeaten53 off 39.Shahid Afridi had expected the pitch to play slow and low but italso had plenty of turn, as his top order was to find out after hechose to bat. Pakistan went too hard too soon, and Maxwellmade them pay. Awais Zia forced a mis-hit to mid-off, UmarAmin was stumped after a charge and a heave third ball, andSohaib Maqsood played all around a turning offbreak.Pakistan were 23 for 3 and slid fur ther when Shehzad punchedthe legspinner Cameron Boyce to slip. Boyce, one of two inter-national and four T20 debutants for Australia, settled down tobowl some lovely, flighted legbreaks. To add to the capitulationto spin, Umar Akmal slogged at Kane Richardson's fifth ball, and mid-off took the skier. Afridi was Pakistan's final hope, buthe missed his third delivery, a full one from Sean Abbott, to fall lbw. Thelower order, with help from Nasim, did well to bat out the 20 overs andstretch the score from 46 for 6 in the tenth over, but it was never really goingto be enough, especially if one of Maxwell or Warner got going. Max-well did not last too long, although he got off the mark with areverse-swept four over backward point off Raza Hasan. Afriditrapped him in front with a straighter one for 17 and Hasan tookcare of Aaron Finch and Steven Smith. Just when it seemed an-other Pakistan attack would make a match out of almost nothing,Warner stepped up. With Pakistan playing only two frontline spin-ners in Hasan and Afridi, Warner went after the quicks, muscling themfor boundaries before bringing up the win against the par t-time slowbowlers. Pakistan had managed all of four fours and no sixes intheir innings. Warner alone struck four fours and three sixes.
