Choosingthe ne

YORKE PENINSULA Wedding Guide 5

for most people, purchasingan engagement ring is upthere as one of the biggestdecisions they will make.

A diamond ring symbolisesthe traditions of love andeverlasting beauty, and no twodiamonds are the same. Each one is unique and a well-

cut diamond maximises theamount of light which enters andexits from the top of the stone. Each diamond's value is

evaluated via the four Cs – cut, clarity, colour and carat.Cut is the only characteristic

of a diamond not influenced bynature. The proportion, finishand symmetry are what createthe fire and sparkle. Clarity refers to the number

and size of the inclusions, orbirthmarks, in each stone.Generally invisible to the naked eye, these are what

make your diamond unique.Colour is determined on a

scale of D (colourless) to Z(yellow/brown). Completelycolourless diamonds areincredibly rare and, as such, areextremely valuable and highlysought after. Carat is the weight or size of the

diamond. A carat is divided into100 smaller units called points. So, where to start? First of all,

work out what you like and, justas importantly, what you don't.The shape of your diamond is

probably the most importantelement of your design. Many different shapes are

available but by far the mostpopular are the round andprincess (square) cut diamonds. That said, there are countless

design options available and themost important thing is you lovethe design you choose.

1. Set a budgetRight from the moment you start thinking aboutpopping the big question you need to think abouthow much money you have to spend on the ring.

2. Set some criteriaDo you want yellow or white gold? Do you want atraditional diamond or a coloured stone? Narrowdown your choices before you go shopping otherwise it will be way too overwhelming.

3. Do your researchFlick through magazines or websites and cut out or print pictures of rings you like.

4. Learn the lingo9ct or 18ct gold? What’s the difference between fancy cut and round brilliant?

5. Do not shop onlineIf it sounds too good to be true it normally is!

6. Get a second opinionIf you are planning to surprise your girlfriend, it might be a good idea to take someone along and give their opinion about the ring you choose.

7. Consider engravingEngraving your wedding or engagement ring adds a special and personal touch.

8. Plan aheadFactor in at least four weeks for your rings to arrive atthe jeweller. Consider time for engraving and resizing.

9. Peace of mindAsk the jeweller what warranties are attached and ifthere are any conditions. When you get home, makesure your rings are adequately covered by insurance.

10. Look after your assetKeep it in a safe location when you're not wearing it– take your rings off if you are cleaning or gardening.Take your rings into your jeweller for regular cleansand polishes as well as replating every 2-3 years.

Advice for ring shopping

DIY wedding stationeryCreating your own stationery will not only cut costs but alsogive your wedding a personal touch, a sense of personalsatisfaction and can be a good bonding activity for you andyour bridesmaids. However, do-it-yourself is not foreveryone, you need to have the time, energy and patience!

Things to keep in mind:

Postage, how much will it cost to post? Guest list, canyou cut costs by printing place cards at the same time?

Bindings and gluing, what will work and be effective?

Various pieces of stationery you may consider:

Save the date The invite RSVP Envelopes Gift information Table numbers and place cards Extra details; for example, transport, accommodation,post-wedding recovery barbecue Thank you cards

Church

Garden

Your dream dress

tips to finding

Back in the day, almost everyone got married in a church regardless of whether they werereligious or not. These days, the weddingceremony can be held anywhere you like and

lots of people choose a beautiful setting like a localpark, garden or the beach.

Traditionalists or those with a religious connectionstill like to get married in a church, just approach yourlocal pastor or minister to book the date. They willusually want to meet with you and your husband-to-beto discuss not only the service but also thefundamentals of marriage based on their religion.

A church service often follows a fairly set structureand includes prayers and bible readings. It can go for a bit longer than an outdoor ceremony.

If you would like to get married in a public place, you need to approach the local council for permission. There will often be a small fee and some paperwork.

Then you need to organise a civil marriage celebrant."Without a celebrant to officiate your wedding

ceremony, your special day is just an expensive party,"local celebrant Graeme Sare said.

The first step to marrying is lodging a Notice of IntendedMarriage with the celebrant, this must be received aminimum of a month before the ceremony date.

"Your celebrant will help you design a ceremony thatis special to you and ensure the legal requirements aremet," Mr Sare said.

"The vows you share at the ceremony are importantlegally but can also express how you feel about each other."

There are many options for ceremonies these dayssuch as special rituals, a sand ceremony, hand fastingor lighting unity candles.

After the official part of the ceremony, the celebrantwill accompany you to the signing table to sign themarriage certificates which he or she will then send off to register the marriage.

Make sure you book your church, outdoor locationand celebrant well in advance as, just like receptionvenues, they book up quickly.

Set a budget and stick to it, dresses can cost anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars up to $10,000.

Plan to start looking early, this will help you work out if you can find something off the rack or you need to get your dream dress made.

Book appointments with boutiques you wish to visit, this willensure they have time and space for you to try on gowns.

Shop with a clear vision or style – elegant, modern, glamorous or vintage. Know what dresses you do and don't like; for example, lacy, strapless, one shoulder, fish tail, fitted, flowing, et cetera.

Keep an open mind, dresses can look completely different once you put them on.

Choose a dress that makes you feel like a princess.

Shop with supportive people who will give you their honestopinion (hopefully this is your bridesmaids and/or mum!)

Place your order early so there will be plenty of time foralterations to be made once it arrives.

Ask for the best price, wedding dresses are very expensiveand sometimes retailers will knock a little bit off.

Choose a dressmaker you trust to do your alterations andmake sure you get a quote so you know how much you aregoing to be up for.

Don’t forget to take along your shoes when you are gettingalterations made.

of preparing your hair1. Thou shalt have regular haircuts, colours and treatments. In order for us to give you that crisp, polished look on the day we need to beworking with happy, healthy hair. You should have regular trims in preparation foryour wedding day to keep those split ends at bay. We also recommend gettingyour colour touched up regularly along with deep conditioning treatments so yourhair has that beautiful shine to complement the gorgeous style!

2. Thou shalt book a consultation and a trial. You should definitely book a hair style trial for your sake as well as ours! It putsboth our minds at ease to practise the chosen style and to work out what worksand what doesn’t. Bringing in pictures of your dress, headpiece and how youwould like your hair is also a great idea and remember to keep an open mind assome styles just won’t suit.

3. Thou shalt not wash hair on the day of wedding.Washing your hair on the day of the wedding is a big no no. For your hair to last allday it has to have a bit of guts. Your hair just won’t curl or hold any style if youwash your hair on the day.

4. Thou hair shalt not be ruined. We recommend wearing a buttoned shirt or something which you can take offeasily without ruining the style. It is also a good idea to pack extra hairspray andbobby pins in your clutch on the day for any emergencies.

Beautyand yourbig day

et’s face it, as the bride you are going to be the centreof attention on your big day and it’s understandableyou want to look your absolute best. But preparing forall this attention actually begins long before your

wedding date.Lots of brides feel pressure to trim down for their

wedding but it is unrealistic to crash diet and shed kilos andthis only adds extra stress to a time which is already busy. However, getting engaged is a good excuse to build a

healthier you. This means eating a healthy diet with lots offruit and vegetables and either continuing or implementingan exercise routine. You don’t need to train to become a marathon runner but

40 minutes of exercise a day several times a week will helpyour body and its skin look their best for the big day.Speaking of skin, a big, ugly zit always seems to pop up

when you least want it to and it’s not uncommon for a brideto break out in the lead up to the big day, particularly if youhave been stressed. Speak to your local beauty therapist and start a face

cleansing routine a couple of months before your weddingdate, this gives you time to ensure you don’t have a reactionto the products and time for your skin to revitalise and glow. In the week before your wedding, try to relax, avoid

chocolate and too much alcohol and drink lots of water — atleast eight glasses a day.A couple of months before your wedding, you might also

like to consider trying a teeth whitening product, after all,you are going to be smiling a lot! For the safest and mosteffective options, ask your dentist. You will need to contact a make-up artist months ahead

and book them in, especially if they are popular. Talk to the make-up artist about the brands of products

they use and ensure they are of good quality which will laston the day.It is essential you book a trial so you can be assured you

are happy with the make-up, you will look a lot different towhat you do with your normal day-to-day application! If you don’t like the make-up, be honest.Likewise, have a trial spray tan before the big day, maybe

for your hen’s show. You want to be absolutely sure thecolour is right for you, nothing worse than an orange bride! There are lots of chemical-free tanning products out

there these days which are not only better for your skin butalso look more natural. On the day, sit back, relax and enjoy being pampered and

turned into the beautiful bride you are sure to be!

hink of your bridal bouquet as theultimate fashion accessory. Flowers are the perfect addition

to complement your dress, flowersfor your beloved groom’s lapel, yourfemale and male attendants, parents, your table settings, your wedding cakeand much more. Fresh blooms on yourwedding day provide a huge impact. The price of your flowers will vary

according to the workmanship involved, the quality, type and volume of flowerschosen, style of your bouquet andattendants, floral table decorations, etcetera. Try to choose flowers which are in

season and your florist will alwaysadvise and assist you when meeting fordiscussion.Your floral designer will also ask you

to browse magazines for ideas as towhat you may like in flowers, designsand colours.Always consider the design and

shape of your wedding gown beforechoosing your bouquet. As a general rule, a slim-fitting dress

looks great with a long, trailing bouquet, while a fishtail skirt suits a simple clusterposy or bouquet. Asymmetric gowns go well with

asymmetric bouquets. The length of your veil can make or

break the effectiveness of your bouquet.A short veil looks effective with a formalposy, while a long veil suits a dramaticmultiple-trail bouquet.Always plan your bridesmaids’

bouquets at the same time. Theseshould be fantastic, but neverovershadow the bride’s bouquet.Don’t forget the men in your wedding,

they too will need a floral buttonhole tocomplement their partners. It is also a tradition for the bride and

groom’s parents, and, if you choose, grandparents, to have a corsage, buttonhole or flower pin.

Photography tipsBefore the wedding When planning your schedule for the big day,

factor in plenty of time to get ready early so youcan get photos with your parents andbridesmaids/groomsmen.

Make a list of any special photos you would likeon the special day.

Choose a location for a photo which is special andmeans a lot to you or a hobby you are both into.

Make sure you get a photo with your family pet. Allow enough time for family photos and on-location

shots after the ceremony before the reception. Thiswill give you some time to enjoy with each other andyour bridal party so you’re not rushing.

Send your timeline to your photographer, videographer, coordinator, bridal party andimmediate family.

Make sure your friends/family know when theyhave to be ready for photos after the ceremony.

Have a back-up plan in case of bad weather.

On the big day Have your flowers, jewellery, perfume, shoes or

any other items you would like photographedready for the photographer.

When you and your wedding party walk down theaisle, keep the bouquet around the belly buttonand don’t forget to look up and smile to the guestsand photographer.

Make a list of family shots so no one is missed (for example, grandma and grandpa).

Give the list to a friend or family member toorganise everyone so they are there ready for their turn and don’t miss out.

The biggest thing – relax and have fun!

the wedding cake is an important part ofyour reception as cutting the cake is oneof the first things you do together ashusband and wife.

It signifies the start of your union andrepresents faithfulness and sharing — it is alsoone of the most photographed events of the day!

But when it comes to selecting a cake therecan be a huge variation in price. Usually, themore complex the design, the more money itwill cost.

It is important your cake looks pretty andsuits the overall theme of your wedding;however, if you are serving the cake to guestsit must taste good too.

Traditionally, fruit wedding cakes with reallythick icing and delicate lace work were thenorm (ask your parents!)

These have now been replaced withcolourful, funky, plain, layered or flavoureddesigns from cupcakes to several-tieredcakes.

When approaching someone to create yourcake/s, it is very hard for them to give a quoteuntil you convey some idea of what you want.

So, first word of advice, do some research, cut or print out pictures of other cakes you like.

Set up a meeting with the cake creator andtake along the pictures as well as the theme orcolour scheme you are planning.

Once you have made these decisions thecake creator can give you a quote and workwith you to create the cake you desire.

When planning your reception, make sureyou set aside an area or table for the cake.Remember, it needs to be accessible for youand your groom to stand behind and haveroom in front for your paparazzi guests!

It is often a nice touch to decorate the tablearound the base of the cake to add somecolour. This might be something as simple as aposy of flowers which can also double as thebouquet to be tossed when you call up all thesingle ladies.

Don’t forget a knife and if you are going to toast after you cut the cake, have somechampagne glasses (filled, of course) at theready.

12

If you choose to go with cupcakes, how many do you need? Do you want them displayed on a stand, do you have one or do you need to hire one?

Tiered cakes, how many tiers do you wish to have? Some of thetiers can be fake and you can have another cake out the backsimilarly decorated ready to cut and be served to guests.

Do you want the tiers or cupcakes to be all one flavour?

Will the cake/s be served as dessert? If so will there be enough to feed all guests?

How do you want the cake/s to be decorated? Many couples usetheir initials on top of the cake or flowers or something differentaltogether. You might choose a theme for your topper which depictsthe couple; for example, a farmer with his John Deere tractor and hisnew bride made out of icing.

adviceEmily’s

Ialways dreamt of a big beautifulwedding with all my family andfriends around, but I quicklyrealised my budget just wasn't

going to cover everything I wanted. From that moment, I decided I wasn't

going to stress or fret about anything.Having a conversation about budget

can be the most difficult one you'll have.Who's paying for what? How much isgoing to be spent? There's not a correct way or wrong

way, nowadays it is more up to the coupleand parents to decide. Once a few ground rules have been

set, you can start planning, or announceyour engagement party. Of course these are not a necessity,

but are often seen as a time to catch upwith family and friends before the big day.Begin to gather and collect ideas of

styles you may like. Get a few quotes tosee how far your dollar is really going totake you. You might not need the 10-tiercake after all!If you're lucky enough to have attended

weddings of your friends or family, taketime to reflect about what you enjoyedand what you didn't. This is a quick way towork out what style and feel you'd like onyour wedding day.You can work through all your plans in

chronological order if that is easiest foryou to understand, or start with yourvenue, dress and a few of the biggeritems. There's an ever-changing trend with

wedding ceremonies, you and yourpartner need to decide what you'd like.On Yorke Peninsula there are ideallocations for beach ceremonies, farmceremonies/weddings, church servicesor any location which takes your fancy.Decide together what type of celebratoryceremony you'd like and find a suitableminister or celebrant to discuss yourideas. There are many different venues and

locations available for the reception onYorke Peninsula.Writing a list of pros and cons might

help you come to a decision. Decorating your venue can be a hard,

especially if youhaven't seen theinside before. Ifpossible, arrange atime to view theinterior. Make amap completewithmeasurementsand powerpointlocations (knowingwhere thepowerpoints arecan be vital ifyou're planning touse a lot of fairylights). Planningand mapping outthe tables andchairs, lolly buffet, dance floor andbar can save a lotof panic andfrustration onceyou're trying to setup for your big day. If your venue is

fully-catered, askthe eventcoordinator whatdecorating/stylingis available. Youmay be able to hirefairy lights orvases. Check what you can and can't do,for example, you might not be able tohang certain thing from the ceilings orwalls. Share your vision and discuss thedifferent options. Once you've chosen a location for your

ceremony and reception, you'll need torevisit your budget so you can work outwhat you've got left for things likephotographer, invitations, bomboniere, rings, cake, DJ/music, hair and make-upand bridesmaid and groomsmen attire. All of these other requirements will endup costing quite a lot.Revisiting your costs as often as you

can will help keep expenses undercontrol. Including every small expensewill keep you on track to creating thewedding of your dreams. I calculated

everything imaginable. Most other things are left up to your

personal preference, remember to keepin mind the style of your day and a theme.Don't get distracted from all those prettythings out there. Use or create a colourpalette, find textures which will work withthe colour scheme. Try and keep an open mind to opinions

of other people you will be working with.Their views and ideas may just be able towork with what you have in mind. On the day, try and relax and enjoy

everything, I don't think I've ever met abride who didn't have something slightlygo astray on the day. Remember theguests are your family and friends; try notto panic as this is one of the mostimportant days of your new lives together.

having a cocktail party butnot sure what to choosefrom the menu?

Naomi Fulton, from TheRoaming Chef, has providedsome tips to help you decide.Firstly, find out if any of your

guests have any food allergies. This can be requested on yourinvitation or guests can adviseyou verbally. These days, there are so many

food allergies and intolerancesto be aware of; for some people, reactions are very mild, but forothers it can be anaphylactic and fatal. Secondly, avoid choosing an

entire menu based on what youwould like. It’s okay to choosesome of your favourite foods butyou need to think of the guestswho will be attending. Forexample, if you have a guest listwhich comprises mainly of bigburly men, then don’t select allvegetarian options. Men preferthe heavier, more filling items. Ioften get asked by the grooms ifthere is going to be enoughfood. If this is a concern, choosea bigger package with morepieces. Thirdly, avoid choosing all

seafood. This may be yourfavourite but it’s an acquiredtaste. Not all people like seafoodand shellfish allergies are verycommon. Fourthly, if you have a function

comprising all ladies, try andkeep the selection to lighteroptions on the menu. Womentend to prefer the healthier foodrather than heavier pastries. I’mnot saying omit them altogetherthough as it’s nice to indulgeevery now and then! Fifthly, if your function is an

after-dinner supper, keep it lightand sweet. Most people wouldhave already had a meal sowould be reaching for the lighteroptions or sweets. Sliced fruitplatters and cheese are always agood choice. As long as you try to pick a

good balance of hot and cold, light and heavy, you shouldcover all bases.

Before you even start consideringreception venues, you need to prepareyour wedding guest list. This willeliminate some venues if they can’taccommodate all your guests.

Make a list of venues and give them alla call to see if they are available on thedate you have chosen.

Refer to your budget. This is whereweddings can get expensive. You needto have a rough per head cost in mind.

Request a copy of the venues’ weddingpackages, take time to compare them allagainst each other and consider thedifferent options. Are you going fingerfood or sit down meal? Two course orthree? Choice menu or alternate drop?

Think about the drinks. Will the majorityof your guests be drinking alcohol? If so,you might be better off with a drinkspackage. This allows guests an unlimitedamount of specified beverages for acertain amount of time. Alternatively, youcan put a certain amount of money onthe bar and guests can order drinks freeof charge until the tab runs out. If youchoose this option, make sure the venueknows exactly when the tab opens, whatdrinks are included and how muchmoney you have allocated.

Once you have shortlisted possiblevenues, make a time to go and have alook and speak with the manager orwedding coordinator.

Does the venue accommodate any ofyour guests which may have special

requirements? I.e. is it wheelchairaccessible, does it offer gluten-free andvegetarian options on the menu?

Consider the shape of the room.Where will your bridal table bepositioned? Are there any majorobstructions which will prevent guestsfrom seeing all the action? Are theretoilets nearby? Will there be any impactfrom other patrons utilising the venue? Is there room for a dance floor?

Can you implement your decoratingideas? When you meet with thewedding coordinator, ask if there areany decorations included with the venuehire. If you are able to supply your own,are there any restrictions? Are you ableto hang things from the ceiling?

Once you are happy with your venue, book immediately and pay a deposit tosecure your date.

Meetwith the wedding coordinatoragain to make selections for your menu. You may even like to dine out at thevenue to taste test the options. If you areserving finger food, ensure there isplenty and discuss how it will be servedso everyone gets their share.

As the day draws closer, contact thevenue to ask when you can set up,confirm guest numbers and tableplacings, finalise any payments anddouble check the menu.

On the night, relax and enjoy thehospitality of the venue you havechosen.

For a beach or garden ceremony, sashes can be tied around the chairsto brighten up the aisle. Addcoloured sashes to your arbour.

Add an umbrella or two to yourbeach or garden ceremony for styleand comfort for your guests.

Decorating your wedding receptionvenue does not have to beexpensive.

Odd style and size jars filled withfresh flowers are great centrepiecesfor tables and give a romantic feel.

Mismatched or alternative-stylechairs are very in vogue at the momentand a few wooden benches scatteredaround the place looks great.

Use sashes as table runners to addcolour to your tablecloths; they canbe run vertically on the bridal table.

Fairy lights are great whether it befor your bridal table, decorating theceiling or simply wrapped around atree outside.

For cocktail receptions, you onlyneed a few chairs scattered aroundwith some old wine barrels or tablesfor the finger food. This style is greatfor a small intimate lunch gatheringor an evening function which can stillcontinue into the wee hours.

Candles are a great way to addambience to your venue; differentcolours and sizes as well asfragrances not only look effectivebut smell great too.

Vaseswith twigs and floatingcandles look great and foodcolouring can be used to the waterto suit your colour scheme.

Backdropswith or without lightingare a great way to cover a wall orfeature you don’t really want to see.

There are no rules to decorating foryour wedding as long as it reflectsthe bride and the groom comingtogether to make one happy family.Source: YP Wedding and Party Hire
