Dear friends in Christ,

Sabbath-- God has woven it

into creation… God has spoken

it in His commandments. In

order that we may know, love

and serve Him above all

things, God calls us to cease

our “busyness.” In Psalm 46,

God prays in us—“Be still and

know that I am God.”

The policies and procedures of

our congregation include a

three-month sabbatical upon

the pastor’s completion of his/

her seventh year. This paid

time off is for rest, study and

rejuvenation. This month

marks my ninth year as your

pastor. Almost three years

past due, I will be taking a

Sabbatical from August 1

through October 31, 2016. I

have been in full time ministry

for more than 15 years now

and have never had a Sabbati-

cal. I am well aware that it is

time both for my health and

the health of this congregation.

Not all congregations give

their pastor(s) such an oppor-

tunity. This congregation is

very generous and affirming of

ministry and I want to make

the best use of the time given.

There are 4 basic reasons con-

gregations should give their

pastors a sabbatical:

1. Unlike other vocations, a

pastor experiences extreme

emotional highs and lows.

In the course of a day, I can

deal with a death, deep

spiritual issues, great en-

couragement, petty criti-

cisms, tragedy, illness and

celebrations of birth. The

emotional roller coaster is

draining!

2. Most of us pastors don’t

have an “off” switch. We

are on-call 24 hours a day.

Vacations and days off

rarely go uninterrupted.

This can be exhausting but

its affects are felt mostly by

my family.

3. Sermons and teaching

don’t fall out of the sky onto

my desk! A good pastor

needs time of uninter-

rupted study and prayer.

This never happens at the

church or home. There is

always a crisis or need of

the moment.

4. Pastors often move on to

other congregations be-

cause they are experiencing

“burn out.” The transition

to another parish provides

a break in constant minis-

try, but includes the stress

of moving, saying good-bye

and learning a new congre-

gation. Studies show that

pastors who are given a

sabbatical are more likely

to stay longer in parishes

because they are less likely

to experience “burn out.”

My vision for sabbatical in this

up-coming year is three-fold. I

want to renew my relation-

ships with my wife, my chil-

dren and God—all which have

been grossly neglected in defer-

ence to ministry. I will fulfill

this vision by spending time

during the month of August

going on a family vacation,

during September by spending

Pastor’s Paragraphs

time alone at retreat centers

and monasteries, and in Octo-

ber, Celia and I will embark

upon a trip to the Mediterra-

nean to walk the steps of St.

Paul.

During this time Pastor Keller

will continue to serve as our

Assistant Pastor, visiting the

hospitalized and home-bound.

He will be assisted by Greg

Hitz, Sr. and Jodi Yorty who

will make visits when the min-

istry of an ordained pastor is

not required. Pastor Paddy

Rooney will fill in for me by

preaching and presiding every

Sunday, attending council

meetings, staff meetings, bap-

tisms, weddings, funerals and

teaching.

I want everyone to understand

that I love the work of minis-

try in this congregation. This

congregation is a vibrant place

that gives my family and me

great joy. This sabbatical is

not so that I can get away from

you all, nor give you a break

from me. It is about being obe-

dient to God’s Word, which

calls us first and fore-most into

a relationship with Himself. It

will be a time for you and me

to grow in our understanding

of ministry, life of prayer and

need for God’s grace.

In obedience to the Gospel,

Pastor A.J. Domines

Scripture Readings PSALM 51:7

For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother

bore me.

ROMANS 1:20-23

Ever since the creation of the world God’s eternal power and divine na-

ture, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through

the things he has made. So they are without excuse; for though they

knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but

they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were

darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools; and they exchanged

the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human

being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.

MATTHEW 9:10-13

Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold,

many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His

disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples,

“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

When Jesus hear that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no

need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this

means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the

righteous, but sinners, to repentance.

Article II Original Sin

It is taught among us that since the fall of Adam all men who are born according to the

course of nature are conceived and born in sin. That is, all men are full of evil lust and inclinations

from their mother’s wombs and are unable by nature to have true fear of God and true faith in God.

Moreover this inborn sickness and hereditary sin is truly sin and condemns to the eternal wrath of God

all those who are not born again through Baptism and the Holy Spirit.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we have

to be told by your precious

Word that we are by na-

ture sinful and unclean.

From our first breath we

are far from what you cre-

ated us to be. We ask you

to forgive us our ever pre-

sent inclination to evil.

Birth us again through

Baptism and the Holy

Spirit that we may be

your children forever, for

the sake of him who died

for us, Jesus Christ our

Lord. Amen.

Mr. Joel Balmer is a Stephen

Minister from our most recent

installed class. When asked

about his pursuit of becoming

a Stephen Minister, he stated

“I thought it was something I

wanted to do because I had al-

ways wanted to be in ministry

and only now have been given

an opportunity; somewhat like

how I had the opportunity to

go into nursing.” Then he was

asked if the 50 hours of train-

ing was hard? His response

was “No, as a matter of fact I

thought it went by rather

quickly, not to say that some of

the training wasn’t challeng-

ing.” “And I feel like I learned

a lot about myself, and the oth-

ers in the class with me.”Joel

is hoping to be assigned a care

receiver in the near future.

Church Council Q& A

Brilliantly written, powerfully

observed, Still Life with Bread

Crumbs is a deeply moving and

often very funny story of unex-

pected love, and a stunningly

crafted journey into the life of

a woman, her heart, her mind,

her days, as she discovers that

life is a story with many levels,

a story that is longer and more

exciting than she ever imag-

ined.

“Still Life with Bread Crumbs”,

“Still Life with Bread
