Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Week 8 Newsletter.
CONTINUED SPORTING SUCCESS Congratulations to the senior boys soccer and senior
girls B netball for being crowned Ryde Zone PSSA
champions for 2018 after winning their grand finals.
Both teams demonstrated excellent skill and
wonderful sportsmanship.
Well done also to the junior boys (A) soccer team who had a narrow lost to Gladesville PS in the final.
A great effort from all of our teams who competed in the
grand finals.
Thank you also to the large group of parents who attended
the finals and provided such great support to our teams.
FLAG RAISING CEREMONY @ KISSING POINT WHARF A new flag pole was unveiled at Kissing Point Wharf
and Putney Public School was there to assist with the
proceedings. School captain, Kristian G, and vice
captain Hayley P were given the honour of raising the
two flags for the first time. The new flag poles are
situated to the right as you begin the walk towards
the Ferry Wharf and proudly fly the Australian and
Aboriginal flags.
Kristian and Hayley also got to meet the Mayor and
other members of the City of Ryde council.
Both students are to be congratulated on the
wonderful manner that they presented themselves.

SPELLING BEE SUCCESS Congratulations to Ella and Harrison for reaching the 5th
round of the Regional Spelling Bee. Well done to both
students. The school is very proud of you.
COMMUNITY SERVICE I recently received the following email regarding one of the
students from Putney PS.
“I am writing to let you know you that Callum M is a credit
to your School. Callum was part of a team of 54 Kids Giving
Back volunteers who cooked, packaged and delivered over
400 warm, nutritious meals to local shelters and individuals
in need yesterday. Callum took part in our Community
Cook4Good Program with his family and should be
commended for giving up his time to help others. “
SENIOR DANCE GROUP: 2ND PLACE—BATTLE OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS DANCE Congratulations to our Senior Dance Group who gained
2nd place at the BATTLE OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS dance
competition held at Marsden High School.
What a wonderful performance! A great achievement from
a group of talented and hard working students.
Thank you to the many parents and friends who attended
the performance. The students appreciated your support.
The group will next perform at the Granny Smith Festival. I
will keep you informed as to the time and venue.
VACATION CARE The school has been investigating the option of Vacation
Care being offered at Putney Public School. We have
settled on the YMCA as being the provider and are
currently waiting the appropriate documentation from the
YMCA to be forwarded to us. Once this is done, we will
need to wait for formal approval from the Department of
Education’s Assets Management Unit.
It is too late to offer Vacation Care during the next holiday
period—we envisage starting this program during the
Christmas holidays. I will keep you up to date with the
progress.
MEDICAL REMINDER If students are sick, it is imperative that you seek and act
on appropriate medical advice. The spread of germs has a
direct effect on the health of others, particularly those with
weak immune systems.
BLACK & WHITE NEWS
PARENTS APPROACHING STUDENTS It has come to my attention that a small
number of parents have approached students to discipline
them regarding incidents that they may have heard or
observed. This course of action is totally inappropriate and
will not be tolerated. Under no circumstances are parents
or visitors to the school, permitted to discipline students. If
you hear or see anything that requires action, please bring
it to the attention of a staff member.
COMPULSARY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Information for Parents
Education for your child is important and regular
attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve
their educational best and increase their career and life
options. NSW public schools work in partnership with
parents to encourage and support regular attendance of
children and young people. When your child attends school
every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build
and maintain friendships with other children.
What if my child has to be away from school?
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from
school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
being sick, or having an infectious disease
having an unavoidable medical appointment
being required to attend a recognised religious
holiday
exceptional or urgent family circumstance e.g.
attending a funeral.
Following an absence from school you must ensure that
within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a
written explanation for the absence. However, if the school
has not received an explanation from you within 2 days,
the school may contact you to discuss the absence.

Trivia Night Rap Trivia night was a big success last week at the Putney
Bowling Club but the biggest success on the night was
achieved by Putney PS students with their fabulous
artwork. Congratulations to the successful bidders on the
night and we would especially like to thank all the teachers
and students for creating such a fabulous selection of
artwork.
We would also like to thank the Putney Bowling Club for
supporting our event and thank you to all the local
businesses for donating such generous gifts. These
businesses included Gringo, Zaitoune, Reverie, Charles
Street Kitchen, Patio, Salon 120, Elysian Hair and Beauty,
and Putney Dental Care. Finally, special thanks go to Peter
for donating a number of prizes for the raffle and to Dan
for donating a stunning piece of art from Kate Owens
Gallery.
Any feedback on the night and suggestions for
improvement would be greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for
the next P&C event - Halloween Disco!!

School’s Competition at Marsden High School.
The dancers really got the crowd out of their seats with their energetic item to DNCE’s Dance, and placed 2nd in
their section. The judges commented on the fabulous costumes, awesome energy and the excellent execution of
hip hop style.
Congratulations to the Senior Dance Group for an outstanding and enthusiastic performance. Congratulations and thank you
to Dani Camage for her exceptional choreography, vibrant costuming and overall effort put into the group.

Stage 3 Visits NSW
State Parliament
On Thursday 23rd August, Stage 3 travelled by
bus to busy Macquarie Street, Sydney. We
walked along Macquarie Street looking and
admiring some of the spectacular old build-
ings. We were lucky enough to go inside the
old NSW State Library and see Tasman’s
Map. Many students thought that the main
library looked like Monsters University and of
course, the library in Harry Potter! We saw
some of the old buildings along Macquarie Street including The Mint, Hyde Park Barracks and The
Archibald Fountain.
Once inside State Parliament, we were able to visit the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
We participated in a role play and debated whether a law should be passed that we should not
have any homework! There was a ferocious debate between the government and the opposition
with the government winning the vote! We had a great day !

4G took their learning outside this week, with a hands-on length lesson. Students
had to work in groups to first record realistic estimates of the perimeters of
different parts of the school and then to measure them accurately.
The students in 4G have enjoyed sharing some thought-provoking novels
together over the last couple of terms. These two books come highly
recommended from the members of our class:
“I loved Ivan because
it’s funny with lots of
great, and amazing
characters and it’s
based on a true
story.” - Danielle
“I really liked There’s a
Boy in the Girls’
Bathroom because it
was a funny book with
unusual characters.”
- Krystal
“I liked every chapter of the book because
it was so much fun and it exaggerated a
lot!” - Seamus
“I liked this book because it is about a boy
named Bradley that had no friends until
the counsellor came and changed his life!”
- Ben
“I liked Ivan because it was funny and a
little bit sad.” - Zion
“I liked The One and Only Ivan even
though it is sad. My favourite character
was Bob the dog as he was funny and al-
ways made me laugh! I definitely recom-
mend you read it!” - Samara

Popcorn
1B have been focusing on describing using our five senses. We
have learnt that when we explore the world around us we use our
eyes to see, our ears to hear and listen, our nose to smell, our
mouth to taste and our hands and feet to feel.
Last week, we were lucky enough to pop some popcorn in our
classroom. As the microwaved hummed, we listened to the pop,
pop, popping of corn kernels, we smelt the warm buttery steam
and we saw the popcorn bag expand right in front of our eyes.
Once we had tasted our popcorn we used our experience to write
our popcorn descriptions.
Below are a few samples of our writing and we hope it makes your mouth water as much as it
did ours.
