Letter from the PresidentI am still feeling the excitement of 2015 as we ended the year on a super high note. The 75th Anniversary Homecoming Weekend where we celebrated the grand opening of the new addition to the North Rosedale Park Community House and its 75th anniversary was a glowing success. There were so many hands that made for some light work and heavy lifting combined that I am sure I cannot name all those involved, but I want to thank the Committee Co-chairs: Phyllis Lee and Rose Love; the chair of the Friday night Homecoming Mixer with the theme, “Music Through the Decades”: Gloria Goodwine; and the co-chairs of the Saturday night Homecoming Gala Dinner and Reverse Raffle: Marcia Closson and Kathy Garrett. And , of course, a special shout-out to Marsha Bruhn as the chair of the Capital Campaign Legacy Project Steering committee; Vice Chair, Carol Allen and Don Schieble NRPCA owners representative for their exhaustive and extraordinary efforts to make the dream of a renovated, up-to-date community house a reality. If you haven’t seen the addition or have only seen it from the outside, then you must visit the community house to see what a lovely job the Donato Group and others accomplished. I am super pleased to share that we raised over $20,000 from all of the weekend events!!!! This is a much needed shot in the arm for our operating budget. So, for all who participated, volunteered, bought a ticket for anything, bought a glass of wine or bottle of beer I want to say THANK YOU!!!! From the bottom of my heart!!!

I would be totally neglectful if I did not acknowledge the superb work that Susan Steigerwalt , our past-president performed as she and the Board of Directors worked above and beyond for an entire year. Many hard decisions were made and will continue to be made as we face the challenges of being a relatively newly formed 501 (C) 3. The huge benefit of our hard work was ending the year (again thanks to all of those named and more)

with a budget surplus. Board members chaired fundraisers, social events, attended board meetings and special call meetings, read and responded to thousands (or so it seemed) email messages, cleaned, cooked, baked, donated time and money. It was an honor working with NRPCA Building Manager, Nicole Daniels, Board members: Bob Bonner, Roland Breech, Cheryl Davis, Beverly Frederick, Kathy Garrett, James Mallory, Dexter Slusarski, Bob Weed, Marcia Closson, membership chair, Chelsea Neblett; board secretary, Mary Ramsey; Program Director, Gloria Goodwine and NRPCA Treasure, John Gumbel. I am grateful to start 2016 working with many of the same people listed joined by Richard Castillo as Vice-President and Tracey Matlock and Kim Dorsey as board members.

Now, here is what you can do to help us continue the great work:1. PLEASE pay your membership dues of $752. JOIN us at our 1st social event and “fun”raiser: a

Sock Hop on February 12th (trust me, this is going to be way cool and a ton of fun) see the flyer insert

3. JOIN us for the NRPCA benefit night of the Park Player’s production of “Ain’t Misbehavin” on Saturday, March 19th (I have it on good authority that the cast is awesome)

4. Volunteer for committees and/or activities as the calls for help are made. We need you and hope you will want to pitch in. It’s fun and a great way to make your community one of the best!!

I look forward to meeting you and working with you towards a fabulous 2016!!!

Sincerely, Erma

SPECIAL ASSESSMENT DISTRCIT INITIATIVE NEEDS VOLUNTEERSThe campaign to establish Grandmont Rosedale as a Special Assessment District which would ensure 24 hour security and snow removal is well under way. Ain't Misbehavin'By Roger Loeb

Ain't Misbehavin': Fats Waller Musical Show has been successfully cast. Unlike the Broadway version of five performers and a piano player, The Park Players will present an expanded version featuring 20 singers/dancers – oh yea – and a piano player. How were these talented individuals selected, you ask. In brief, here is the selection process.

On a cold January night (or afternoon), the aspiring actors appeared at the North Rosedale Park Community House. After completing paperwork (previous experience, vocal range, availability) and having their photos taken (allowing the director to remember them later), each person was asked to sing a song, preferably from the show. In this specific audition, the director then requested the auditioners to sing a song as a lullaby, a seduction, and/or an operatic aria.

Meanwhile, in another room, all of the participants were taught a brief set of movements. When called back, they were instructed to perform these newly-learned movements in a variety of styles and tempos.

Next, the participants were asked to read brief scenes from the show. As this piece is mostly music, the "scenes" consisted largely of song lyrics. Auditioners were thanked and sent home to await the results.

Behind the Footlights

‘Pilates at the Community House’ Pilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs.

This integrated exercise system combines elements from gymnastics, yoga, weight training and breath work to build strength without bulk and create a sleek, toned body.

The next step involved the Director taking time to cogitate and make her decisions. With this production, she then consulted with her two assistant directors prior to calls being made. Those who were cast were asked if they would accept their parts (happily they all did). Others were thanked for their participation and encouraged to come again. The results of this procedure are our cast:

Amber Powell, Antonio Ballard, Bria Warmsby, Carmen Cooper, Corey Quinn, Cynthia Sammy, Deirdre Scott, Gabrielle Dowdell, Gloria McNairy, Jeannette Steinhauer, Jessica Brown, Jonathan Jones, Kyle Sammy, Mark Steinhauer, Montellis Whitt, Norina David, Roger Loeb, Sadie Bernice, and Zania Sanyika.

Now that the beautiful new addition to the Community House is completed, our attention is turning to the next phases of this major renovation project.

A New RoofThanks to a total of $132,500 granted by the City of Detroit and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, funding is in place for replacement of the peaked and low-slope roofs on the Community House. Expect to see lowered operating costs with the installation of insulation and solar panels! Once we have the specifications, board approval, and bid documents, we should be ready to begin construction this spring, anticipating completion by the end of May. Let’s hope the weather doesn’t surprise us this time! Our goal is to schedule construction so as to not interfere with baseball and soccer games, or other activities at the Community House.

The PlazaIn conjunction with the addition, architect Guss Pappas sketched out a 1900 square foot plaza to complement activities in the Community House, tie into a walkway through the park, and act as a performance space for cultural events. Expect to see more detailed plans in the near future for review by the community and approval by the board. Consider purchasing an engraved paver that will become part of an environmentally-friendly permeable surface and cement your place in history! Look for the kick-off of this next phase by April, with a goal to raise $35,000 and complete the new plaza by fall.

Parking Lot ImprovementsExpanding Handicap AccessDiscussion continues on the best way to deal with needed parking

lot repairs. Do we reprioritize funding to widen the circular drive and repave the lot with permeable asphalt, or do we focus on continuing upgrades to the building that may help to expand programming and increase operating support? Does it make sense to be planning for resurfacing the lot when constructing new stairwells and a lift to the second floor may result in damaging the lot? These are just some of the questions that the Steering Committee, Architectural Review Committee and the Board will be dealing with in the near future. In the meantime, if you haven’t had a chance to see the new addition with its light-filled lobby, handicap-accessible restrooms and more functional office space, please come by and visit.

Last year marked the beginning of the Rosedale Tattler eBLAST EDITION. An electronic newsletter designed to supplement the printed version of the Tattler will be distributed via email. The eBLAST EDITION is not intended to replace the printed Tattler, but to provide vital and interesting news, information and reminders that sometimes miss the Tattler deadline (the 10th of each month). The eBlast should arrive in your email around the 3rd week of each month so as to meet this objective. In order to receive the eBlast you must be on the "list". However, it is really easy to sign up for the list by visiting the homepage of the North Rosedale Civic Association at http://NRPCA.org and pushing the big red subscribe button. Get yourself signed up today so

that you will be in the know! The exception to this requirement is that we have seeded the list with a number of email addresses that we have from our membership roster so your name may be on the list already. If you're not sure, you can still push the subscribe button as the same email address will not be signed up twice. If for some reason you do not wish to be subscribed, there will be a link at the bottom of each newsletter that may be used to unsubscribe. In case you want to be sure that this newsletter does not fall into your junk mail folder, be sure to just add the newsletter sender to your address book. In Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler, eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a favor to ask her hairdresser Dorrie Curtis. It's a big one. Isabelle wants Dorrie, a black single mom in her thirties, to drop everything to drive Isabelle from her home in Arlington, Texas, to a funeral in Cincinnati. With no clear explanation why. Tomorrow.

Curious whether she can unlock the secrets of Isabelle's guarded past, she agrees, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives.

Over the years, Dorrie and Isabelle have developed more than just a business relationship. They are friends. But Dorrie, fretting over the new man in her life and her teenage son's irresponsible choices, still wonders why Isabelle chose her.

Isabelle confesses that, as a willful teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell deeply in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family's housekeeper―in a town where blacks weren't allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences makes it clear Dorrie and Isabelle are headed for a gathering of the utmost importance and that the history of Isabelle's first and greatest love just might help Dorrie find her own way.
