Thank you for all of your prayers and support for during the ASP Youth Mission trip! Thanks to your financial support we were able to take 27 volunteers to Scott County, TN to work on 4 homes that were in desperate need of repair. During the prayer partner banquet, the general theme from the students was their excitement to build a relationship with the homeowners this year and to see the joy on the homeowners faces. If you ever have the chance to be the hands and feet of Jesus, take the opportunity, you will be blessed beyond measure.

IGNITE YOUTH GROUP

We will kick off the School Year with the End of Summer Splash Bash on August 25 from

6-8 PM. Meet in the Sanctuary and bring your parents.

PARENTS—we will have a parent meeting

to kick off the school year and then join our

youth in some Splash Bash Fun!

EVERYONE—Bring a towel and a change

of clothes. You WILL get wet!

Parents of Potential Confirmation Students—This would be parents of youth in 7th–9th grade who have not completed confirmation. Please look for a survey coming out in September. We will be taking a survey to see what the best time and day will work for your youth.

Confirmation is a special class that allows youth to grow in the knowledge and understanding of our Christian Faith and the Methodist Church. This is a class that will equip them to make an informed decision about following Christ and joining our church as members.

We are looking to host this class for the youth starting in January 2020 and completing the class be the end of May.

This class is a huge commitment so please help us out by giving us as much information in the survey as possible. Also parents, this commitment is not just for the students but for you as well. We will all be partnering together to make this journey a successful one for your youth!

Blessing the Backpacks

Sunday, September 1st

As the summer comes to an end, school is just around the corner. Join us for worship at 9:30 and 11:00

for a time of blessing our students and their backpacks. Students please bring your backpack to

worship with you and we will bless you and your backpack at the beginning of worship. After the

blessing you will be dismissed for Sunday School.

VBS 2019—The BIGGEST Thank You!

This year was my 1st year as VBS Director and I had no idea what to expect. Brook Hill Family, I cannot thank you all enough for the support and time you put it to make this VBS a success. We presented the love and goodness of God to over 100 children and many families. We had over 65 volunteers throughout the week who worked many hours to lead the children in song, story, craft, and games. I cannot sing enough praises and accolades to the volunteers who made VBS a success. On night one, I thought I would never do it again, but by the end of the week, God’s goodness and joy captured my heart and there is no way I could stop being part of helping and watching children experience God on a new level. If you played any role in VBS this summer, know that your role made an impact on a child, on a family, and in the Kingdom of God.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

Blessings,

Ashley Kight

Welcome Our Newest Member—

Joan Thompson!

Joan Thompson joined Brook Hill by transfer of membership from Thurmont United Methodist during the 9:30am worship service on July 14. She has been attending Brook Hill Church for approximately two years and coordinates the First Connect Team for the 9:30 service. Joan shared that her faith, family and friends are so important to her and she has been walking with Jesus for 44 years. She has a gift of being able to turn strangers into friends and a heart for serving others. Joan enjoys traveling, reading, flower gardening, photography, scrap booking, and antiquing. She is married to Russ Thompson and they reside at 2612 Monocacy Ford Road, Frederick, 21701. Their email address is [email protected].

Dawn Brooks Tharps Our New Seminary Intern

We are blessed to have Dawn serving with us for two years, sharing her gifts as she experiences pastoral ministry in our setting. Please welcome her to our Brook Hill family.

Dawn Brooks Tharps was born in Frederick, MD., but raised from a child to adulthood in Boston, MA. She is married to Will Tharps and has three children, Eric (34), Jauhara (27) and Jaelyn (14). She has two grandchildren, Kharee (2) and Kehlani (1). Her home church is Jackson Chapel UMC, where she has served as Women’s Ministry leader, and a member of Lay

Dawn finds joy in allowing the Lord to use her as a willing vessel for the fulfillment of His master Plan to fill the earth with His glory.

Philippians 4:6-7 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all

he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace

will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Coming! Narthex Remodeling!

It is exciting to announce that our Narthex will be updated to better serve our church! Check out what the Designers have planned in the display in the Narthex.

Thank you to the staff and people who gave their input and ideas. The Designers used this input for a plan to best fit our needs and budget.

The details and how you can help! We will begin with Phase 1 projects, all of which will be completed without church budget money. Private donor money will cover materials and labor, however, the more we can use our talents and construction skills, the farther the donor money will go in completing projects listed in future phases. Can you paint? Carpentry skills? Electrician? Plumber? Your volunteer service will help save money that would have to be paid for contractor services. That money can then be used to help buy a chair…or table…or carpet. (All listed in future phases.) Your service will make a huge difference in the whole project coming together!

CAN YOU HELP with our Phase 1 projects? • Paint walls and ceiling. (We need experienced adult interior painters) • Install the sign-up wall. (Good with a drill? See picture of sign-up wall in the Narthex for a

better idea of the type of work involved.) • Refinish front and side entry doors. (Our entry doors need refinishing. Can you serve this

way?) • Change counter tops on Mailbox counter, Beverage Counter and the current Welcome Center

counter. • Add doors to the back of our current Welcome Center Counter and prepare the counter for the

new top. • Change hardware on counters. • Add an electrical outlet for a monitor across from LAC. • Add electrical outlets for beverage counter. • Hang wood accent wall and lettering. • Hang decal scripture artwork. (Similar to what is in the prayer room.) • Add water lines and sink for our beverage area. • Relocate our mailbox counter to new location. (This is fastened to the wall.)

For more details about these needs/or volunteer to serve, contact Elaine Luttrell [email protected] or text or call to 240-357-0178.

To be Completed in Future Phases: New carpeting and furniture

Great Expectations

Seven years ago, I preached my first sermon at Brook Hill Church as a newly commissioned elder, appointed as your associate pastor. The title of the sermon was “Great Expectations” and I ended with these thoughts:

Faith is expecting the faithfulness of God in every circumstance, trusting that God will provide all the grace and power we need to live a life of amazing love.

I am convinced, my Brook Hill Family, that God will faithfully direct and provide in our season together. I have great expectations that God will do more than we can imagine, no matter what the circumstances we face. I expect the goodness and love of God to overflow into the lives of others, wherever we go.

As of August 1st, I am called to serve as your interim lead pastor, and I still have great expectations that God is faithful and will provide and direct this new season together. I will still be a pastor of connectional ministries, as together, we will continue to connect people to Jesus in body, mind and spirit.

People have asked, “How will you do this without an associate pastor?” My response is that I may not have an associate pastor until next year, but I still have the same powerful God who equips and leads me, the same gifted and faithful staff, and the same wonderful loving, supportive congregation. I have great expectations that God is able to extend the impact of the gospel of Jesus Christ through the body of Christ into our community and to the world. Join me in praying for our church, welcoming those God brings here and sharing God’s love as we are sent out.

I am honored and grateful to serve with you all! I can’t wait to see what God will do as we are faithful. Glory, glory, Hallelujah!

Handfuls of Grace

Did You Read the Fine Print?

One of the things my teachers and parents tried to instill in me was to read the fine print before signing anything. Today we agree to “terms and conditions” often when online. We need to know what we are signing up for! Both we and the vendor want to know what to expect from this contract.

The exception to this practice of nailing down the conditions of agreement or participation is the commitment we make to Jesus Christ. The terms and conditions are simple and straightforward. I turn over my life and my will in order to be right with God and have abundant life. He will lead me wherever He wants me to go. He will be with me until the end of my days. He will provide for me just as he provides for the lilies and the sparrows.

But Jesus doesn’t provide a road map. There are no agreements about wages or overtime. Our companions on the journey may change from time to time. There is only one place to present grievances and that is at the throne of grace in prayer. God listens. He comforts. He provides strength and courage. But we can’t say, “This is not what I signed up for!” It may not be what we thought we signed up for, but have you read the fine print?

Jesus laid it out for his followers. “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel will fail to receive a hundredfold in the present age— houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions— and to receive eternal life in the age to come.” (Mark 10:29-30 Berean Study Bible)

And Paul and Barnabas encouraged the believers in Antioch, “We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” (Acts 14:22 Berean Study Bible)

Our response then must be, “Yes, Lord. I’ll go where you want me to go. I’ll do what you want me to do. I’ll say what you want me to say. I am yours now and forever.”

The church office will be closed on Friday’s during the month of:

Conference Policy on Pastors Returning after Change of Appointment

¶2412 – Returning to a Previous Appointment

1. As of the effective date of a new appointment, a pastor shall immediately cease all pastoral counseling and pastoral visitation with members or member families in the previous appointment. Since appointments are generally announced several weeks in advance, each pastor has adequate time in which to effect closure and make appropriate referral to another for the pastoral care of members.

2. Pastors shall have a clear understanding with former con-gregations that they will not return to officiate at baptisms, weddings, and funerals, or do pastoral counseling or pasto-ral visitation in that parish. Pastors, active or retired, shall respectfully decline to participate in such duties when invit-ed by members of a former congregation. Declining all such invitations is the responsibility of the previous pastor. The present pastor, at his or her discretion, may invite the previ-ous pastor to return for pastoral functions. However, the present pastor should never be under any pressure to invite the previous pastor.

3. Through transitions in pastoral leadership, local congre-gations should be educated concerning this policy and asked to support it by prayer and actions.
