Ashtanga Based Yoga Teacher Training Programme (200 hours)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Lucy Crawford is the lead teacher, and will present 70% of the course content.

This Yoga Teacher Training course is presented as 4 Modules, of 1 week each, spread evenly over the year beginning in November 2021 and completing October 2022.

The ‘whole’ will unfold - in a layering process - where Lucy weaves the physical, cerebral, and spiritual theory - alongside the physical felt sense experience. Each Module will be a layer of building blocks, teaching skills, of theory, practice and understanding of Yoga.

Focus on the body, the anatomy and physiology of stretching, experiential anatomy, somatic awareness processes, the breath body, the psychology of mind stuff. The various Yoga teaching methods and practices available to us - will be covered as part of this training.

Each Module, introduces another layer of understanding and practice. Counting in Sanskrit, for each asana, working with hands on / external supports / alignment / specific adjustment / relevant anatomy / experiential anatomy / anatomy of the asana / breathing techniques (pranayama), whilst simultaneously adding in the theoretical blueprints for each asana.

TOPICS COVERED

The counted method will be taught as a foundation and basis for teaching. The count itself is like a scaffold, architecture or skeleton to support the teaching of this Yoga Practice Method . Its clear structure gives a sense of containment, which can be really helpful for the student teacher. The count is also important as a tool to keep the mind focused on the movement and breath together as synchronised motion. This is further assisted by ‘drishti’ places to look whilst moving from position to position, keeping the attention in the midline (usually) and towards one of the energetic centres of the body or specifically on the hands or feet.

Working with the body The body itself is the ‘earth’. We need to get to know this ‘earth’ in ourselves - connect with it somatically, and extend this self knowledge into our teaching. This ‘knowing it in the body’ provides us with a ground from which to work with others.

!5

Page 6: Yoga Teacher Training Info booklet 2021

Observation skills Our physical patterns are already present in the body, we all have them, a large basis of our tissue field organisation is based on our movement preferences, how we developed - the things we did, the accidents we had. All this has come together to shape our bodies. We will begin to look at the body, foundations and connections, or lack of connection - and we will begin to use tools to help people re-integrate and proffer new movement possibilities.

Adjustments, hands on work At first we will explore touch, the act of touching anothers body with correct sense of boundary. Then we will look at the basic support, and foundational type of adjustment. We will learn standard / basic adjustments for each asana and from there we will begin to add in additional adjustment possibilities that are more individually tailored. The approach we take is analytical and detailed and we really encourage the hands on part of this work as it creates a feedback loop and helps us to understand things so much more in our own bodies. NB: The adjustment work needs time to develop into an instinctive yet intelligent process and we must acknowledge that this takes time.

Foundation and shape We will analyse and discuss the foundations, shapes and structure of each asana. Once we understand the asana – we can begin to understand the possible adjustments available for different bodies.

Experiential anatomy Lucy will explore through touch - some basic experiential anatomy and the bony handles most often used during adjustments, getting to feel how we can use the bones to offer directional movements through the other connective tissues. We can use the skeletal awareness to help us shift the foundation. This is turn will bring intentional and directed movement back to the ground, to create space in the body. This kind of exploration brings a reciprocal understanding of ones own body. We will get to know the bones through walking them with our fingers and get to know the points of contact on the bones.

Asana work Asana - one by one - from the anatomical viewpoint cross referencing this with the foundations of the asana and negotiations required in the tissue field, to bring about the integrated and aligned whole. Our focus is not to make perfect ‘asana’, but to understand the blueprint of each asana. What we are looking to maintain. Ascertain, what is possible for the individual body, safely and with awareness. Presented by Lucy, a look at all of the Asana in the Primary Series, a physiological breakdown of movement possibilities in the tissue field.

!6

Page 7: Yoga Teacher Training Info booklet 2021

Use of supports and asana variations In the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system, physical supports and aids were not introduced. It was thought to deflect from the meditative flow of the sequence; however, we need to acknowledge that each persons needs are quite unique and as teachers - we need to attend to this in terms of supporting the body towards a new alignment. We strongly believe that there is a place for supports that enhance the practice.

Building safety and trust in the teacher student relationship A more student centred and intelligent approach to the Yoga practice reduces stress in the relationship between teacher and student and the possibility of injury. We aim to build trust and safety in the relationship we have with our students. Being freer as a teacher to introduce a wider range of tools, our teaching become authentic and relational.

Anatomy & physiology Relevant anatomy and physiology - (basic) backed up with some experiential anatomy (with Lucy) to build the awareness to the body we live in and how it works. Dr Rikke Olesen will present an Yoga related Anatomy and physiology module covering the basic functions of our musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory and central/peripheral nervous systems in relation to the yoga practice. Rikke will discuss the main connective tissues of the body, bone and joint structure and function as well as the main muscles involved in the movement of specific joints with a special focus on the spine, shoulders, hips and knees.

Yoga philosophy The underpinning - The philosophy of Yoga: with Swami Saradananda will be taught as a foundation to the Practice beginning on Module 1 and then we will re-visit this subject matter in Module 3. Swami Saradananda will include: yama and niyama practice and discussion of ‘ethics’ of yoga and yoga teaching; the 3 gunas: the 3 qualities/strands of matter (sattva, rajas and tamas). Introduction to Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Introduction to the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutra: beyond the 8 limbs, Introduction to the Upanishads, amongst other topics.

The art of teaching The ‘teaching’ of anything, begins with the ‘practice’ of that something. Slowly through practice, self listening, understanding and integration, we begin to know the body. When we have a felt sense of ‘something’ that is of value - we will naturally want to share this with others. Perhaps the true value of what we discover is in the sharing of it with others.

Page 8: Yoga Teacher Training Info booklet 2021

We need tools and we need to have a good ground of comprehension and somatic experiential understanding. It is only in the atmosphere of ones own class that you will begin the real work of becoming a teacher - through your own practical teaching experience, calling upon the resources and practical tools provided during the Teacher Training Programme.

NB: During Timetabled hours, the priority of focus will be placed on the teaching work, within the context of the group as a whole and not the arising process of any individual trainee, except where this benefits the group as a whole.

Teaching development In order to develop as individual Teachers, the necessary work, is to build on your personal assimilated experience, which you then draw upon when sharing Yoga with others. We all have strengths and weaknesses - and as your teacher on this training, I will endeavour to polish your natural ability, and challenge you to work on your more difficult areas and bring forth a more rounded Trainee teacher.

Yoga teaching cannot be based purely on the deliverance of verbal instruction and information without an assimilated understanding of that same information through your own Practice. We will bring all the elements of the practice together, to prepare you to begin the journey of teaching with some good tools at hand and some solid understanding to help you structure your teaching work.

When we begin to teach, first and foremost we need to provide a safe space for others to come to. It is a ’holding environment’ for people to be fully present with their own process, we create a group space, where people come together to do this work, and you become the holder of this space. You are therefore able to consciously set up this space with a consistency and offer clarity and support within it. The teachers role in the asana work is to reinforce foundations through correct relationship to earth, use physical and verbal adjustment and through your skills of observation and understanding asana.

The guidance you offer to the students process, is supported by ones own practice and somatic understanding. We need to practice to be in touch with this process – in ourselves.

The aim is to develop teachers who will be well versed in the principles of Ashtanga Yoga (The eight limbs), as we analyse, breakdown, observe and explore. To teach yoga, one must have a passion for this beautiful science and a sincerity to share its wisdom for the benefit of others. All teachers on the faculty will endeavour to guide the teacher trainees - to develop their skills, and to become competent and confident.

THE TEACHING FACULTY

We are a diverse faculty of teachers, unified, not necessarily by our opinions and beliefs but by the ‘shared root’ passion for and belief in the ‘Practise of Yoga’. We each continue to share what has been important to us and an intrinsic part of each of our lives. In personal, individual ways, each one of us maintains a daily Yoga Practise, for some, it is a sitting and chanting Practise for others it is the practice of ‘Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga’ .

We have each developed and continue to develop our own styles of teaching with our own skill bases in specific subject areas. We share the Blessing of this Pathway, this ‘Practice’ as a central cord in our lives and we continue to nourish the metaphorical ’Yoga seed’ that has been planted in each of us.

Boundaries Please do not at any time discuss issues that you may have with a member of the faculty with the other students on the course. Please contact the tutor directly to resolve. The other students present are there to complete a Yoga Teacher Training, and are not there to be drawn into supporting you with your experience. You must not burden, influence or affect others adversely during the training. Please respect this and contact a tutor to discuss any issues you may have. The energy of the group should be a safe place, and we learn better when we are relaxed and in the knowledge that clear boundaries in place. Please practice The 5 Yama - as a conscious internal commitment!

Complaints Procedure Supporting the resolution of any issues that may arise between the affected parties. Stage One: Speak to the individual(s) concerned as soon as you have settled yourself again and try to communicate the to individual personally and try to resolve the issue. If you are not satisfied with the response you have received, try to resolve the issue by asking a tutor to help you and follow stage two. Stage Two: Outline the details of your complaint by email and send it to Lucy Crawford using Email: [email protected] Stage Three: Your complaint will be acknowledged within 3 working days from the date it is received. We will then meet as a faculty to share what has taken place, and will do our utmost to resolve matters fairly. If the complaint is taken up with the person who caused offence or did something perceived as unreasonable, we can only bring what has occurred to the person concerned and hope that acknowledgement and or apology is enough to resolve the issue.
