Updating our Sisters of Providence Chapel: At this time, we are considering making some renovations to our Chapel, as are listed below. This, however, is a proposal. I would like to hear any other suggestions or thoughts that you would like to share with me.

A Proposal for Restoring Cathedral’s ChapelPresent ConditionThe lovely chapel on the main corridor of Kelly Hall has served as a place of worship and personal prayer and meditation for fifty years. Designed and built by the Sisters of Providence who directed Ladywood Academy, it has several notable features. The walls of the sanctuary are a rich rose-colored marble. The two statues of Mary, our Blessed Mother, and St. Joseph with the child, Jesus, are attractive figures set in the niches to the right and left of the altar. A crucifix, with a cream-colored corpus, is a focal point in the sanctuary.

6

Page 7: Yes, we would like to be a Cathedral Theater …cathedral-irish.org/.../publications/Worland10/08-25-10.docx · Web viewSAVE is a club that is involved at the Julian Center and we

On the back wall is the 7-foot marble altar of sacrifice used before Vatican Council II when the priest said Mass with his back to the people. Liturgical reforms from the Vatican Council called for the priest to face the congregation and to pray with the Church, now understood as the entire “People of God.” To accommodate this change, a smaller wooden altar was placed in the sanctuary. The large marble altar remains, however, so that now two altars crowd this fairly small area.

Additionally, the original altar rail remains in place, although it became obsolete when worshippers began to stand to receive Holy Communion. For some reason, the Chapel presently does not contain an Ambo, or pulpit/lectern where the Word of God is proclaimed. This essential element is missing and so it must be supplied.

In short, the adaptations made in the years after the Council were short-term solutions made to accommodate the liturgy which evolved over time. Those reforms being now settled, it is both timely and appropriate to restore this Chapel for our worship and recover its pristine dignity and beauty.

Proposed RestorationThe two main architectural features of the sanctuary are the altar and the lectern. We will restore

the original marble altar as the altar of sacrifice by moving it forward in the sanctuary, replacing the temporary wooden altar. The tabernacle, which now rests atop the marble altar, will continue to occupy a place of prominence, perhaps on a Eucharistic pillar. The Crucifix will remain in its present central position.In order to create a Lectern of suitable dignity, it should also be constructed of marble, a more noble material than wood. The altar rail is no longer needed and therefore can be removed. We are fortunate that the altar rail has the very same marble and design features as the altar. Therefore its pieces can be

re-used to create a lectern to match the altar in color, texture and design.

To highlight the rose-colored marble of the sanctuary, a soft shade of paint will be applied to the walls. By painting the walls leading to the sanctuary, one’s eye will appropriately focus on the elements there. Finally, a simple and dignified Presider’s Chair will replace the vinyl-covered chair now in use.

The Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is seeking student volunteers to work from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27 for their annual: Auction for Kids' Sake at The Fountains Banquet and Conference Center, 502 E. Carmel Drive in Carmel. This event is similar to our own ShamrAuction, so you must have your parent’s permission to participate. Volunteers are needed to help close out the silent auction portion of the evening. If you are interested, please see Mrs. Renze-Rhodes for more information.

~~~~~Drop and Pick Up: Please be aware of two things. There is no stopping, parking or
dropping off of students on the round-a bout. This has led to some traffic accidents in the past and slows and blocks the traffic flow.
Secondly, there is a lane which is one way entering the parking lot next to the school. Please observe the one Way status as well as the do Not Enter area. Please do not cut through the parking lots in an attempt to get to parking spaces. We thank you for your cooperation.
International Student Leadership Conference (I.S.L.C.) to be given for sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Notre Dame University on Saturday, October 23rd from 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Cost for the one-day event is $85.00. Interested? Please email [email protected] for more information.
7
Please note: This is a proposal only. If you have any thoughts, comments, or recommendations about this proposal, please contact me at [email protected]. We do want this to be the work of our Cathedral family, so we need any suggestions you might have.
3. CATHEDRAL THEATRE FAMILY SPONSORSHIPS
The show must go on, and it does at the Cathedral High School Theatre. The 2009-2010 season was a smashing success and now our faculty and students are preparing for a new “The black box” (small stage) setting allows student writers, directors, and actors to develop their skills in an intimate setting. Of course, the main stage productions will continue to be the memorable shows that you have come to expect.
Family Sponsorships are an important way we can continue to show our students that we support them in their efforts. The funds raised through sponsorships help pay for things like meals during tech week and scholarships for graduating Seniors. Consider being a Cathedral Theatre Family Sponsor for the 2010-2011season and please invite grandparents, aunts, and uncles to join in sponsoring the theater program. If you have any questions, please call Mr. Terry F. Fox, Director of Theatre, at 317-968-7344. Service Outreach News:
Our beginning of school year offers inspirational service opportunities for our Cathedral students.
Class Service Projects As an insight regarding the good works that we can accomplish this summer, consider this scripture: “The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance.” Sirach 13:25a. And as we perform simple acts of giving, and providing shade for others, we will experience the following insightful inspiration: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Gal 5:22-23. Join in some of the following expressions of giving: In September, you may join our serving spaghetti dinner for the special community of families at the Lord’s Pantry on Wednesday, Sep 8, 3:30-7:15. Or Saturday, September 11, juniors will be serving up a fabulous lunch for the Saturday noon meal at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. Details on all of these on-going class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities as wonderful expressions of giving and grace.
Shack City We are gearing up for our wonderful tradition of supporting the need for low cost housing with SHACK CITY on Saturday, September 11. This event, sponsored by the Cathedral Habitat for Humanity chapter, has our students sleeping in a box on the practice field on Saturday night, starting at 7:00 PM until 8:30 AM the next morning. We will check in with our boxes at 7:15, ready for a fun evening with bands, games, a midnight vigil, chili soup line and water. At 8 AM we will have an outdoor mass with Fr. Munshower, to which all families are invited. We live simply that evening and do experience the reality of living on the streets, under the stars. There is a $20 donation required for the evening. Click here for details and a parent permission slip.
Catholic Refugee Resettlement Student Board Member Would it interest you to serve as a student board member working with the Catholic Refugee Resettlement service at the Catholic Charities office? You would work with students from other Catholic high school and four universities to lead your parish and your school in events supporting the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program which serves refugees coming to Indianapolis. Let Mrs. Halstead know your interest by Sep 1 please to meet the upcoming application deadline. Two students may apply as well to do this together as a team. In this opportunity you will work with Cathedral alum Gabrielle Campo.
Joint Service Outreach With Chatard High School and Herron High School Would you like to help plan a joint service outreach with other high students from Brebeuf Jesuit , Hamilton SE, Cardinal Ritter, Bishop Chatard and Herron High School for middle school students in our community? We are proposing a special day of events combining reading, athletics and other passions such as art, music and dance. The theme is “Make It Mine”. We have already submitted one grant application and are doing more planning regarding our Saturday, Dec 4 2010 and Saturday, March 5, 2011 events.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School/ and are current for all hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the service hours. For the 2010-11 academic year, service hours for seniors are due December 1, 2010 to meet their total graduation requirement. The status of service hours for seniors will be shown as satisfactory or unsatisfactory on their second quarter report card. For the academic year of 2010-11, freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2011. The status of service hours for these underclassmen will be shown as satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the third quarter report card. If the hours for last year were completed, hours earned after April 23, 2010 may be credited to the current year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. You are welcome to come and to join us any day. If dropping off your child, why not both come and begin the day with the Lord? This might become a monthly practice, building important memories for both you and your child. We would be honored if you would join us!
Today’s Feast Day is in honor of St. Louis IX of France, who lived in the 13th century. He was most counter-cultural in the time of Medieval kings, who tended to rule with great concern for themselves and their friends, but few concerns for the people of their Kingdom.
Louis IX was different. He was a saintly king and a man of justice and mercy, or peace and great piety. His reputation for fairness and integrity of character made him a sought-after arbitrator of international disputes.
May we follow his advice to “Always side with the poor rather than the rich, until you are certain of the truth.”
Our meditation for today: “Jesus, give me a share of your love for each and every person I know. Help me to look at them with mercy and compassion. Show me how to love them in ways that will draw them closer and closer to you.”
