Dear Cathedral Parents,

Today is the first day of Freshman Welcoming Week. This is a time when freshman begin to feel their class bond as the “Class of 2015,” and when seniors gently chide them, asking for a group to sing the school song, or to do the class dance. The seniors are wearing T-shirts provided by the Mothers’ Club, so that only seniors can make a request of our freshmen. The younger students have been told that they have the right to say “No” to an unacceptable request. I thanks our Seniors for their gentle treatment of our Freshmen and the Mothers’ Club for providing the T-shirts so the freshman can identify Seniors!

From the Desk of the Chaplains ~ Daily Mass is offered in the Chapel at 7:00 a.m. on each day. Fr. Munshower, our Chaplain, encourages members of the Cathedral Family to contact him to have a mass said in memory of a loved one. His

phone number is 968-7362. The $10 mass stipend would go to a fund to help financially marginalized students here at Cathedral High School – helping those within our midst who need our help! If you are not able to pay the $10, you may still submit an intention for our daily Mass. Please contact Fr. Munshower at 968-7362 or Father Zahn (968-7456 for details and arrangements. Father also requests that, if you contract a Mass, that someone from your family tries to be in attendance on that day.Morning Masses begin at 7:00 a.m. in the Cathedral Chapel. Father John Zahn, Chaplain, will be offering Mass on Monday mornings and during the school

day on a rotating basis. This will allow your children to take advantage of a daily mass during their resource periods some days.

At this time, all of the Masses for the week of August 15th are available, if you have a petition for which you want a Mass offered.

Andrew Cramer (‘13) was in the finals of the synchronized diving competition at the US National Swimming/Diving competition in LA and came in 6th in synchronized diving. Please welcome back and congratulate Andrew when he returns to school on Monday.

Malcolm Herbert (‘11) opens tomorrow night at Footlite Musicals in the role of Pippin. The show played this past weekend and this week on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 18-21.

Please join me in congratulating the 2010-11 Lady Irish for earning the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association Team Academic Award! Students on this team were: Kelsey Kreutzinger, Courtney Lansing, Christine Maci, Emily Pollom, Chelsea Bilger, Emily Preston, Liza Girton, Ellie Dedinsky, Audrey Rougraff, Sara Hohman, Gail Moriarity, Jazzmine McDonald, Molly Kennedy, Keely McGrath, and Erick Voigt.This sward honors teams who have matched their dedication to the sport of volleyball with excellence in the classroom. To qualify for this award, your entire volleyball team

had to hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent for the entire academic year. This is really a remarkable accomplishment and one of which you can be very proud!

Congratulations and thank you to Shanice Jackson-Ellison (’12), Peyton Powers (’13) and Anthony "Tony" Pipken (’15) (no picture available), who behaved extremely well Monday when their bus was rear-ended by a young driver who misjudged distance when turning. There were no injuries to any of our three students, but they did arrive home late after the police came, a report was filed, and the necessary post-accident steps were taken. They had each called parents to notify them of the late arrival, and during the whole endeavor, not one of these young people complained or fussed about having to wait for the

process to be completed. They are to be commended, and it only shows why Cathedral students are so outstanding. Matt Howard, Michele Nash (’08) Tabbed Butler’s Top Athletes:

Nash, selected as Butler’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete, helped lead the Bulldogs to the team title at the 2011 Horizon League Women’s Golf Championship and Butler’s first appearance in the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship. She was the individual medalist at the Horizon League tournament with a 54-hole score of (+14) 233, and she led the Bulldogs in scoring at the NCAA Central Region with rounds of 72, 80 and 78. The junior standout was named the 2010-11 Horizon League Women’s Golf Player of the Year, becoming just the third player in Butler history to earn that honor.

A former Cathedral High School golfer who hails from Indianapolis, Nash led the Bulldogs in scoring with a school-record 77.0 average. She shot a team season-best 71 in the first round of the Chicago State Cougar Classic and in the second round of the Horizon League Championship. The Butler junior was named first team All-Horizon League and was chosen to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team.

Announcements:

Lunch- All checks delivered to the front office must be received by 8:00AM so that they can be processed by 9:00AM. If not then they will be process for the next day.

Drop Off and Pick Up- Please note at no time should there be a morning drop off or afternoon pick up occurring on the round-about. It is dangerous and causes delays and the school buses must use this area for drop off. Also dangerous is parking on the round-about to pick up students from athletic events or practices. There is a large parking lot by the fields and we ask that for safety reason you park there. We thank you for your cooperation.

Minor Calendar Change – we originally had scheduled the Country/Health Fair for Tuesday, October 18 th. At this time, it has been moved to Tuesday, November 15th. Both days are on the County schedule, so this is not a change in school time at all.

Reminder: Sophomore parents – tomorrow, Thursday, August 18th is the last day to turn in your ring orders. The Herff Jones representatives will be present in the Cafeteria during sophomore lunches and after school until 6:30 p.m. in the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center. A deposit is due at the time of the order. You have already received information about Class Rings in the mail over the summer.

This Friday is the Freshmen Welcome Dance held in the Student Life Center Commons starting at 7:00PM. This is a no cost dance and is open to freshmen at Cathedral only. The dance attire is casual with Christian modesty (no bare navels, no spaghetti straps, no visible cleavage, and no attire advertising illicit drinks, drugs, or behaviors). The dance will end at 10:00 PM. Drinks and snacks will be provided .

VINCENT C. CAPONI joined St. Vincent Health in 1998 as Chief Executive Officer. As CEO of St. Vincent Health, Mr. Caponi leads an integrated healthcare network of 20 health ministries serving 46 counties in Central Indiana. In addition to his responsibilities as CEO, in September 2007, Mr. Caponi was appointed as Ascension Health Ministry Market Leader for the State of Indiana, which includes Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health and Evansville-based St. Mary’s Health System.

Mr. Caponi is a graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati, and he has a Master’s degree in Health Care Administration from Central Michigan University. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a former Regent for the state of Alabama.

Peer tutoring by National Honor Society Tutors will be available beginning Tuesday, August 23rd both before school and after school in the library every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All students are welcomed any time to visit the tutoring table for help with any subject. There is a sign on the table so they tutors can easily be recognized.

School Lunches at Cathedral this year:

All students are welcome to bring a lunch with them, or they can purchase lunch each day from the school cafeteria. In addition to being able to pay for lunch with cash, students can use MyMealTime.com. With this program,

students are assigned a student number within PowerSchool to allow parents the option to deposit money into a student's account to be used for lunch purchases. Checks or cash for deposit may be dropped off in the "lunch money" mailbox by the main office. BE SURE to include the student's name or ID number. Deposits may also be made with the designated cashiers at lunchtime. Parents can track purchases made with account funds or deposit money online by setting up a user name and password at www.mymealtime.com. There is no charge to access your student's

account. If you choose to deposit money online, the site will charge a 4.9% user fee. If you deposit $100 or more, the cafeteria will credit the user fee amount to your child's balance.

In an effort to speed up meal service and offer privacy and convenience, students may opt to use a four digit pin code to

identify themselves and use deposited funds for meal purchases. This system offers complete privacy and use of the device is 100% optional.

The first S.A.T. prep class, especially for those taking it in October or November, will start Monday, August 22. The class will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 2302 on consecutive Mondays (excepting Labor Day) through September 26. All materials will be provided. No sophomores will be eligible for this class, but other prep classes will be offered throughout the year.

4. ComedySportz High School League Improv. Team will start improv. workshops on Tues., Aug. 23. They will conduct three workshops from Aug. 23 through Aug. 25.. You must attend all three workshops in order to audition for a spot on the team on Friday, August 26. 5 SPOTS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE 10 MEMBER TEAM. You must be available to travel to the downtown ComedySports Arena several times for workshops. Workshops will also be held at CHS. Service Outreach News:

The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”

“Decide today whom you will serve.” Joshua 24:15. This scripture prompts us to recall that the early tribes of Israel were being reminded to choose our holy God, and to turn away from other gods. This invitation endures with us still. We are called to reflect about what we should turn away from and how we shall persist in our love for our God. In The Call of Service, Robert Cole states that “all service is a(n) … ethical activity, a reply to the moral call within, one that answers a moral need in the world.” By our faith, service is our opportunity to share a loving heart with others and with our Lord.

Class Service Projects Class service projects in September become perfect service opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities. By supporting these projects on Saturday, Sep 10 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30), and on Wednesday, Sep 14 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM), we show a unified force of Irish hospitable generosity in the community. Our August events were very moving experiences: Jonathan, one of our lunch guests at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen, sang a very touching prayer sharing his joy of worship with God. At Anna’s House, the very robust attendance of neighborhood families who came for spaghetti dinner inspired us all. Our sophomores and juniors were very stirred by their experiences from these events in August.

Habitat for Humanity-Get Ready For Woodshack! Could there be a more vital way for us to support community needs in Indianapolis than to support low cost housing? Cathedral will help to construct our ninth and tenth Habitat for Humanity homes in Indianapolis this fall. Our Habitat for Humanity chapter, led by seniors Natalie Dickman, Grace Waltz and Claire Welch, will host Woodshack, our Shack City event, on September 9th as a dynamic fundraising/educational experience in homelessness and the need for low cost housing. This project helps us to raise $5,000 by our chapter to support the annual fall Habitat home that Cathedral undertakes as an important community outreach each year. Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are current for all hours received since the start of school. There is a slight interruption in our ability to view service hours in Power School just yet. Our technical staff will be resolving this problem shortly. You can send me an email or have your student come to my office to confirm their hours currently shown as completed in our data base. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12, freshmen, sophomore and junior

hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be shown on their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned after April 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. Cathedral Football news: Kick off the 2011 Football season downtown at Lucas Oil Stadium with the Peyback Classic.

It’s Saturday August 20th and we play Ben Davis at 7:00 pm. Tickets are currently on sale in the Athletic Office. The ticket price is $10.00 each, for age 6 to adult. Age 5 and under are admitted free. Cathedral H.S. will get $1.00 for every pre-sale ticket sold here. The ticket is good for all three games that day, with Evansville Mater Dei vs. Indian Creek at 2pm and Brebeuf Jesuit vs. Bishop Chatard at 4:30pm. Come support the Irish in the first game of the season at Lucas Oil Stadium! Go Irish!

Girls SoccerOn August 15 the 5th ranked Irish and 7th ranked Noblesville played to a 0-0 tie. Girls GolfThe Irish finished 2 strokes behind Roncalli in the Columbus East Girls Golf Invitational on August 9, 2011. Molly Ward also finished 2nd individually with a 75 and Karli LaGrotte finished 6th with an 80.

The Irish are currently rated the number 4 team in the state of Indiana.

Girls LacrosseGirls Lacrosse will have a preseason call out meeting on Monday, August 22 at 3:20 pm in the Student Life Center.

The meeting will last no longer than 15 minutes. Any girl interested in playing lacrosse next spring should plan on attending. Meditation: Matthew 20:1-16

“Are you envious because I am generous?” (Matthew 20:15)

The parable of the laborers in the vineyard can seem like a paradox, can’t it? Why would the owner hire people at different times of the day, yet pay everyone the same amount of money? In the world’s eyes this might be considered an unjust labor practice or at the very least employee favoritism.

But Jesus had a different economic model in mind. He was asking his disciples to think the way God thinks. As owner of the “vineyard” that is his kingdom, God is not concerned with pay equity as much as he is with mercy. In the parable, everyone who worked a full day received a just compensation for their labors. But the owner’s heart broke to see others go without enough to feed their families, and so he gave them what they needed as well. The early-morning hires began to complain only when they saw his generosity. They knew deep down that they were being treated fairly; they just weren’t used to seeing someone be as merciful and generous as this man!

God indeed is great in his mercy! Consider how many times in the course of a day you fall short of the calling God has for you. Consider how often you fail to reach the ideal not just in terms of your behavior but your thoughts, your desires, and your attitudes. And still, all you need is one good Confession, and it’s all wiped away. Heaven is still yours, just as it is for those who have lived more perfect, nearly sinless lives.

God overlooks so much in our lives. At the same time, he smiles on every small act of kindness; he rewards every little sign of love; and he rejoices in every godly decision. He can’t bear the thought of our living apart from him, and so he is extremely generous with us!

So celebrate God’s generosity today. Rejoice in his kindness toward you. While you were lost in sin, he gave up his only Son to bring you back. And even today, should you lose your way, he will take you back in a heartbeat. He knows your weaknesses. He knows your needs. He sees into the darkest places that even you can’t see—and still he loves you. Still he pours his blessings upon you. Still he welcomes you!
