Welcome back! This newsletter is sent to you in anticipation of the beginning of the 2014-15 school year at Stevensville. We officially start school on September 2nd for grades K-9 and September 3rd for sophomores through seniors. As you prepare it is our hope that this newsletter provides you with the information you need. Also, you will find the district’s website to be helpful. You can access it at www.stevi.schoolwires.net, where you will find the information contained in this newsletter as well on-going changes, adjustments and items specific to your child(ren). Stevensville Public Schools has been reconfigured for the 2014-15 school year. Jackie Mavencamp will be the K-3 principal as well as the district curriculum & assessment coordinator. Brian Gum will be the high school principal and we are pleased to announce Tracey Rogstad as the new middle school (4-8) principal. A couple of changes to the schedule:
• School Calendar: Although we are back to a normal school year there are some major changes to our calendar.
o There will be a week-long spring break for this school year, and there are two full weeks off during winter break.
o There will be two full days, November 14 and March 13, for staff development in which the students will not be attending school so the teachers can receive training.
o Stevensville Schools will have early-out Wednesdays every week. All K-8 students will be released at 2:31 and 9-12 students at 2:36. The early-outs provide necessary time for staff training.
o Daily release time for students is K-8 - 3:31 and 9-12 - 3:36. All students will start the day at 8:30.
• Late Start: On those mornings it is necessary to start school late due to poor road conditions, the
buses will still run. School will start two-hours late at 10:30 and all bus pick up times will be exactly two hours later than the usual time. For example, if your child gets picked up at 7:50 on the regular days, on the late start day they will be picked up at 9:50.
For further specifics on the upcoming school year, please stay in close contact with your child’s teacher and principal. Let me take this opportunity to thank you for the privilege of allowing Stevensville Schools to be a large part of your life by entrusting us with your child’s education. Each child is very important and we truly understand the enormous responsibility we have to partner with you to ensure your child is ready to be a productive citizen in our society. I encourage you to get involved and get to know your child’s teachers and principal. It is only through your involvement and input that we can offer the best education possible to all our children.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AUGUST 2014
Early-Out Wednesdays tevensville Schools have scheduled early-out Wednesdays for every week of the upcoming school year. Students will be released at 2:31 (K-8) and 2:36
(9-12) in order to provide time for teacher training. Time for staff training is a premium and in order to serve each child’s needs, all staff must have the skills necessary. Some may be wondering why this is not done in the summer, rather than taking time out of the school year. Much of the teachers’ training is completed during the summer as workshops and college courses are taken during that time. The need for weekly meetings provides the opportunity for timely, specific training to all staff. As the staff works through the year they need time to receive specific training for curriculum and student needs. The early-out Wednesday training is a perfect opportunity to fulfill this need.

ASBESTOS NOTICE ncontrolled asbestos contamination in buildings can be a significant environmental and public health problem. Both the public and private sectors have
been dealing with asbestos issue for many years. In 1986, the Congress enacted the Asbestos Hazard Emergency
Response Act (AHERA) primarily to require school districts to identify asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in their school buildings and take appropriate actions to control the release of asbestos fibers. It should be noted that this year was the District’s three-year inspection with the state and we were found to be in compliance. In 1987, the U.S. Environment Protection Agency finalized a regulatory program which enforces the AHERA mandate. A copy of the Asbestos Management Plan is available for your review during regular office hours. Mr. Jim Chisholm is designated as the Asbestos Program Coordinator and all inquiries regarding the plan should be directed to him. HIGH SCHOOL NEWS The 2013-14 school year at Stevensville High School
was a very exciting year. First, Stevensville High School was acknowledged by Washington Post as one of the top high schools in the country for the eighth year in a row. Stevensville High School is planning on celebrating this accomplishment at the beginning of next school year, so I will try and let our community members know the time and location. This is a credit to our teachers and their ability to provide high-level courses, such as our AP and Honor classes. Not only do we provide AP and Honor courses in the standard classes, but our ability to provide advanced placement in areas such as FFA and art truly make the difference. This award is also based on how students score on AP exams and how many of our seniors attend higher ed. institutions.
Stevensville High School is also continuing to modify our ability to serve all of our various populations. Stevensville High School now offers an extensive credit recovery summer program, as well as a Morning Tutorial program that provides help to all of our students in our core content areas. Stevensville High School also has an intervention Team that now meets on a weekly basis to address the needs of our struggling learners and finds pathways to ensure that they succeed.
For the upcoming 2014-15 school year, we are continuing to raise the bar in terms of providing high-level course offerings for our high achieving students. We continue to have more AP course offerings than any other Class A school of our size in the state of Montana. Stevensville High School is excited about having two instructors trained in our advanced English and history classes and are looking forward to bringing back our American Studies class. American Studies allows students to receive high-level training in both English and history simultaneously. This course was a huge success with students previously here at SHS, and due to teacher turnover; the class had to be disbanded. With the addition of some new staff and their ability to receive AP certifications, we will be adding this course back into our list of potential offerings. Stevensville High School has continued to remain very proficient when it comes to reducing student drop out. This fall, when we receive our numbers on our graduation cohort and student drop-out rates, we hope to see continued improvement in these areas. Our advisory program, Graduation Matters, Morning Tutorial, and Summer School have all attributed to this success. I would encourage all parents to please look at the Principal’s Corner this year on our school website. I will be posting updates on the school website on a monthly basis, so please use this to see what
the latest buzz is around Stevensville High School.
Fall registration will be August 19-21 from 8-4 pm for all new students at Stevensville High School. If you are an existing student and would like to change your schedule, please come to our library during these days and we can get you set up for the upcoming school year.
If you have any questions at any time, please feel free to email me at: [email protected] or call me at 777-5481, ext. 132

TRANSPORTATION NEWS
Stevensville Public School's employs professional school bus drivers who drive your children to and from school each day in addition to driving your children on activity trips. They are required to have 10 hours of continuing driver training each year including 1st Aid training. The greatest risk is not riding the school bus, but approaching or leaving the school bus. Before children go back to school or start school for the first time, it is essential that parents and children know traffic safety rules. Drivers: In Montana, school zones are posted for 15 mph speed limit at ALL TIMES! When driving in neighborhoods, watch out for children, who may be thinking about getting to school, and not thinking about getting there safely. Watch for children walking, standing or playing around school bus stops. Be alert to children arriving late for the school bus and only thinking about getting onboard the school bus and NOT looking for oncoming traffic. When dropping off children at school, ONLY drop off your children in designated drop off zones AND never from your
vehicle while stopped in a traffic lane! Learn the "flashing signal light system" that's on all Montana school buses. Yellow flashing lights are activated 200 feet before the school bus begins to stop to pick up or drop off children at designated school bus stops. All traffic should start to slow down and prepare for the school bus to stop. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate that the bus has stopped, and children are getting on or off the school bus. All traffic must stop and wait until the red lights stop flashing, and the extended stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again. Children: Arrive at least five minutes before your school bus is scheduled to arrive at your school bus stop. NO misbehaving, throwing of objects, fighting or destruction of property should be allowed. Stand at least three giant steps (6 feet) away from the curb, line up away from the street. The school bus will stop 10 feet from you, DO NOT approach the school bus until it is stopped, the door is open and your driver gives you a hand signal that it's okay for you to load the school bus. If you have to cross the street to load or after unloading your school bus, ONLY cross in-front of the school bus and with your school bus drivers knowledge, and the RED flashing lights activated, stop arm extended. NEVER walk behind the school bus. Only cross the street after your school bus driver has given you a hand signal that it’s safe for you to cross the street. IF your school bus driver sounds their HORN while you are crossing the street, you should FREEZE in place and look at your school bus driver for instructions. When exiting the bus, be careful that clothing with drawstrings, backpacks and/or book bags with straps don't get caught in handrails or doors. Use handrails to avoid falls. Walk at least three giant steps away from the side of the school bus. If you drop something near the school bus, tell the school bus driver. NEVER try and pick it up because the school bus driver may not see you. Riding a school bus is a privilege in Stevensville and not a right. If you don't follow your school bus driver’s rules you may lose your privilege to ride the school bus. Your school bus driver has the right to assign you a seat on the school bus. If you are going to get off at any stop other than your own, riding a different school bus OR a friend is riding home with you on the school bus you or they MUST have a note signed by a parent. That note must be given to the school office so they can issue a “bus pass" signed by the school allowing you or them to get off the school bus at that stop. That "bus pass" goes to the school bus driver so they know that you or your friend have been authorized by the school to get off at another stop or having your friend riding home with you. NO "bus pass", no one will be allowed on the bus or off the bus at a different school bus stop. NO EXCEPTIONS! Know the "Danger Zones" around your school bus and stay out of them!

Student Drop-off Zone Parents are reminded that the drop-off zone is on the inside loop of the parking lot in front of the school. Parents are also instructed that this area is for pick-up and drop-off only and that if you must leave your vehicle you must park in the parking lot itself. LEAVING YOUR VEHICLE ALONG THE DROP-OFF ZONE IS AGAINST THE LAW. If the parking lot on campus is full there is parking across the street as well parallel parking along the street. Finally, the outside loop is for buses and emergency vehicles only and is marked red along the curb. Please do not use this lane.

Stevensville Elementary Receives Platinum Award at MBI Conference Stevensville Elementary School received a platinum award for exemplary performance with our behavior support system and discipline program. Stevensville is the first school in the history of Montana to receive the prestigious award. To receive a platinum award schools must meet a number of criteria for school wide discipline program, rewards system to promote positive behavior, and a program of Tier 2 supports, such as check in, check out or social skills groups, to help all students be successful in school. The award was presented to the school MBI team at the Summer Institute in June. The team received their recognition from Denise Juneau. Highlighted during the presentation was the Meaningful Work Program—the Busy Bees—implemented for K-3 students.
