Introduction Aim of the curriculum

At Carnforth High School we offer a broad and varied curriculum with a strong academic core which best suits

the learners of Carnforth High School. Carnforth High School's mission is to deliver an outstanding quality of

education where all young people are ambitious to achieve, have high aspirations for their future and play an

integral part in the community that they serve. In 2013, Ofsted stated that Carnforth High School has a vi-

brant curriculum, outstanding behaviour and that many students make exceptional progress. Year on year,

our students deliver some of the best results in Lancashire in an impressive array of subjects. The key stage 3

curriculum helps to build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in each subject and supports the learning

model in developing learners into respectful, resilient, reflective and responsible young people. The national

landscape for education is changing and each department has responded by implementing new schemes of

learning in line with the new curriculum content to be delivered from September 2014. The following pages

outline the topics, homework expectations, equipment required and useful links for further study for each

subject in year 8.

Assessments and Reporting

National curriculum levels have been removed by the Department for Education . Here at Carnforth High

School we will continue to use levels to assess the progress of students for this academic year. Students will

be assessed throughout each half term and a level will be given to each student for each subject. All subjects,

as a minimum, will set one summative assessment and one heat task during each half term. The academic

progress and effort of students will be reported to parents every half term and an end of year summary of

progress across subjects will be sent out to parents at the end of the year. There are a number of parent eve-

nings available to attend, please see the school calendar for the dates.

The Learning Model

The learning models plays a very important role in the curriculum here at Carnforth High School. In each sub-

ject students are encouraged to be respectful, resilient, reflective and responsible. In a recent consultation

with staff and students it was agreed that these are the most important attributes for learners at our school.

These attributes are crucial for learners to develop and will help individuals to reach their full potential.

Teachers will design lessons across all subject which will help to improve and develop these important skills.

Heat Tasks (Homework)

Homework is an essential part of students work at school. HEAT will be set by two subject areas each week.

Each subject area task should take between 2 and 2 ½ hours. The tasks should help to make sure that stu-

dents have learned and understood what they have studied in lessons and prepare them for work to come.

Finally……….

This booklet outlines what each student will be learning about in each subject in this second crucial year of

high school. If you would like any more information about a subject please contact the head of subject or

myself here at school.
